If the nation’s telephone system crashes in the next few minutes, blame the Yankees.

This conference call is going on an hour and Brian Cashman is just getting a second wind.

News so far:

Girardi is pleased.

Cashman is pleased.

Hank is pleased.

Tony Pena accepted a spot on the staff.

  2. Quinn October 30th, 2007 at 5:30 pm

This is great news about Pena!

  3. daneptizl October 30th, 2007 at 5:32 pm

Now we just need Mazzone and Bowa.

  4. Rebecca--Optimist Prime October 30th, 2007 at 5:32 pm

    YAY TONY PEÑA!

This makes me so unbelievably happy….

  5. Nick October 30th, 2007 at 5:34 pm

    anything on Mo and Po?

  6. Brians October 30th, 2007 at 5:34 pm

Like we all didn’t know Cashman’s head was full of hot air….

  7. Bob Michaels October 30th, 2007 at 5:34 pm

    I am now pleased

  8. Mike NYY October 30th, 2007 at 5:35 pm

Mike NYY is pleased by this news

  9. SJ44 October 30th, 2007 at 5:36 pm

    Good for Tony.

Say this about the Yankees…..all three candidates were solid. All three guys have a lot of class and handled this very delicate situation the right way.

Very, very happy Tony is back. It shows his wasn’t a token deal. The Yankees definitely like him, respect him, and its proven with him getting a spot on the staff.

  10. For the Love of the Yankees October 30th, 2007 at 5:36 pm

    very pleased am I

  11. Rebecca--Optimist Prime October 30th, 2007 at 5:37 pm

Do we know in what capacity Peña has just returned, now that I’ve gotten over my giddy squeeeing?

  12. Pete October 30th, 2007 at 5:38 pm

read on espn that o’neal wants to talk to girardi about a coaching position. would be great to have paul back in the fold

  13. mel October 30th, 2007 at 5:41 pm

Oh, that Tony. He’s one smart guy. Girardi will be a superstar manager, but Tony’s able to step up if it doesn’t work out.

I like -Pee Wee- C-money. He’s humble and seems like a good guy.

  14. Chris NY October 30th, 2007 at 5:41 pm

Glad to hear about Pena. Now bring me Bowa.

  15. Brian in CT October 30th, 2007 at 5:41 pm

Pena resumes his position as a helmet catcher, elbow guard holder and general pedestrian.

  16. Chris NY October 30th, 2007 at 5:43 pm

whooooooooooooaaaa, if Paul O’Neil wants in the fold, now things are getting interesting.

Would he be a better fit as the 3B coach, or is Bowa just that good that it’s not worth trying? Any indication that Bowa and Giradi would brawl in the clubhouse every night, or do they get along?

  17. nate c. October 30th, 2007 at 5:44 pm

Brian – one of the funniest things i’ve read all day

  18. Joe M October 30th, 2007 at 5:46 pm

Paul O’Neil on this staff—I don’t think so Someone please tell me what he brings to the table. I can see him at Spring training but that’s about all.

  19. saucy October 30th, 2007 at 5:46 pm

    Brian in CT: lololol

  20. Rebecca--Optimist Prime October 30th, 2007 at 5:47 pm

    Paul O’Neill = Pure drive.

  21. Lori October 30th, 2007 at 5:48 pm

    Fans are pleased.

    What a love fest! :)

Only thing to make me happier is that Mo and Po are also pleased!

  22. mel October 30th, 2007 at 5:48 pm

I like Bowa at 3rd. He was agressive, but smart. Didn’t have a really good rate of guys reaching home safely? Plus he’s like a big kid. Seattle or New York? Hmmm. Tough choice.

  23. Ethan October 30th, 2007 at 5:49 pm

    Any news on Kevin Long?

  24. mel October 30th, 2007 at 5:50 pm

oops. that’s “Didn’t he have a really good rate”

  25. Andrew October 30th, 2007 at 5:50 pm

    Pete,

    Ask about Kevin Long.

  26. Motown Yankee Fan October 30th, 2007 at 5:50 pm

We need Paul to avoid the creeping complacency the water coolers were starting to show.

I’m very pleased about the Tony Pena info. Very pleased indeed.

  27. Chris NY October 30th, 2007 at 5:51 pm

pena on the bench, o’neill 1b coach, bowa 3b coach…..?

  28. Mike R. October 30th, 2007 at 5:51 pm

I’d like to recommend the secondary coaching positions:

    Paul O’Neil – Atitude Coach
Scott Brosius – Over acheiving coach
    Bernie Williams – Clutch Coach
Micky Rivers – Media Relations Coach

  29. mel October 30th, 2007 at 5:52 pm

I know Brian’s trying to be funny (you are, right?), but Posada credits Pena for helping him.

  30. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08') October 30th, 2007 at 5:53 pm

    TONY PEÑA !!!!

    TONY PEÑA !!!!

    TONY PEÑA !!!!

Pete you better get some coffe I thought Boras was the king of run ons , I see Cashman is refreshed letting off 2 weeks of silence :)

  31. Chris NY October 30th, 2007 at 5:53 pm

If we can’t have Paulie back in RF, why not out there somewhere yelling at guys? Between him and Bowa, no-one will be lolly-gagging around the bases, for fear of getting punched in the face for being lazy. I like it.

If you think he brings nothing to the table, you must not have ever watched him play, nor even listen to him broadcast. He knows the game and how to play it the right way, and how hard is it to be a 1B coach?

  32. Skeeter October 30th, 2007 at 5:54 pm

Let’s move Dave Eiland to pitching coach and keep Kevin Long as hitting coach. All will be fine.

  33. Rebecca--Optimist Prime October 30th, 2007 at 5:56 pm

Mike R. That would be so perfect it’s not even funny!

  34. E-ROC October 30th, 2007 at 5:57 pm

Pena might be the bench coach. That sounds good to me. Now for Leo Mazzone and Dave Eiland. Hopefully, Kevin Long and Larry Bowa stays.

  35. Dug-Out Water Cooler October 30th, 2007 at 5:58 pm

    Please no no Oneill!!!!

  36. saucy October 30th, 2007 at 5:59 pm

how long has Dave Eiland been the AAA pitching coach?

  37. Lori October 30th, 2007 at 5:59 pm

Talk about bringing some energy and drive to the dugout – what a great spark Paulie could add! Not to get my hopes up, but I’d love to see this happen.

  38. Tommy October 30th, 2007 at 5:59 pm

I love how Bill Madden asks Girardi about dealing with media. Is that appropriate?

  39. Chris NY October 30th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

For any Gator fans out there, my girlfriend’s father had a conversation with him at a restaurant bar in Boston the last series up there this year. He said about Joba “that boy needs to pitch…” Basically said some things about how this new school thinking about limiting innings and pitch counts and so forth isn’t something he agrees with and that the kids need to be out there pitching as much as they can. Referenced how things were in his days, etc… Old school thinking that you may or may not agree with, but I’m sure it’s part of why he won’t be back.

  40. Brian in CT October 30th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

Yes mel, I was trying to be funny : )

I forgot that he had helped Posada but we all know if they put someone else there people would forget about Pena in a week.

  41. ugh October 30th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

Who cares about Pena? When did this guy get so popular anyway? All he does is stand on first base and wave guys around.

  42. Mike R. October 30th, 2007 at 6:06 pm

    TY Rebecca

  43. Rebecca--Optimist Prime October 30th, 2007 at 6:07 pm

    YW.

  44. Ranting Guy October 30th, 2007 at 6:08 pm

Yo Pete – Has Cashman said anything yet about implementing that free beer promotion you came up with?

  45. E-ROC October 30th, 2007 at 6:10 pm

Ugh–Pena made Posada a better defensive player. It does help that he was a successful manager.

  46. J-Dawg October 30th, 2007 at 6:10 pm

I think that Rickey Henderson deserves a shot at Media Relations Coach.

  47. Mike R. October 30th, 2007 at 6:15 pm

    J-Dawg

That is very interesting. Rickey could be great in that role. I had him pegged for the front office position Director of Intrateam Relations

  48. E-ROC October 30th, 2007 at 6:17 pm

LOL, I remember reading about how horrible a hitting coach Rickey Henderson was. In the article, it said that all Rickey Henderson did was play cards with the players and fool around in the clubhouse. I guess that means he won’t be re-hired ever.

  49. Brendon October 30th, 2007 at 6:20 pm

    Thank you Tony.

  50. S.o.S.27 October 30th, 2007 at 6:23 pm

Does anyonelse think that we should not pick up abreus option, instead use that money for Rowand, having Melky play right and Damon in left?

  51. S.o.S.27 October 30th, 2007 at 6:27 pm

I vote to sign Barry Bonds to dh and media relations coach. We would get the most for our money. If he declines ask bill belechek to do it in the offseason.

  52. E-ROC October 30th, 2007 at 6:33 pm

Picking Abreu’s option is probably a good thing. It’s only for one year. I do have a fear of him having that horrendous slump again, but I think that won’t happen next season. We just need a stop gap at the moment considering AJax rising through the ranks.

Rowand is cool, but it was a contract year. I think he only put up those numbers in his career once. That scares me a little. I would go after Fukudome or trade Damon, have Melky play LF with Gardener in CF. I’d still trade Damon.

Bernie wasn’t that clutch. .275 lifetime postseason BA and .208 in 6 World Series.

  54. 56Bomber October 30th, 2007 at 6:40 pm

“Does anyone else think that we should not pick up abreus option, instead use that money for Rowand, having Melky play right and Damon in left?”

That would give us one of the better defensive outfields in the league but I think you almost have to pick up Abreu’s option given the potential of having to include Melky in a trade. I think its more likely that we see a Damon-Rowan-Abreu outfield in 2008 with Damon and Abreu leaving the scene as Tabata and Jackson (hopefully) step up in 2009/2010.

  55. S.o.S.27 October 30th, 2007 at 6:43 pm

    EROC,
(fukadome)Hey watch your language. Who the heck is fuka?

I dont think Gardner is ready.
Even if Rowands hitting drops, his defense is far superior than abreus. I am not to confident in abreus roller coaster rides, when it comes to his hitting. Not including his wall-apobia.

  56. S.o.S.27 October 30th, 2007 at 6:44 pm

If we give up Melky,I keep hearing that Jones will take a one year contract to redeeam himself. Problem solved. We would still have one of the best outfields in all of baseball.

  57. Drive 4-5 October 30th, 2007 at 6:50 pm

    56Bomber,

We just lost 150 RBI’s with AFraud leaving. Now you wanna lose another 100? Who will drive in runs?

  58. Drive 4-5 October 30th, 2007 at 6:51 pm

Sorry 56Bomber, I meant to ask SOS the question.

  59. Drive 4-5 October 30th, 2007 at 6:52 pm

I’d take a 1 year deal for Andru Jones in a heartbeat.

  60. S.o.S.27 October 30th, 2007 at 6:55 pm

Rowand had 89 r.b.i. last year. Ask yourself this question. How many runs did abreu save us? Rowand would save plenty.

  61. J-Dawg October 30th, 2007 at 6:56 pm

Abreu and Rowand offset each other actually. Rowand gives better defense while Abreu gives better offense. It will be interesting to see which one that the Yankees will pick.

  62. Drive 4-5 October 30th, 2007 at 6:58 pm

The Yankees just lost their home runs, runs scored, slugging percentage and rbi leader. They are hardly in a position to sacrifice offense at this point.

  63. S.o.S.27 October 30th, 2007 at 6:58 pm

Rowand had 27 bombs in philly. I dont think abreu had that his last year there. So as far as offense its not that far off. Plus abreu got good pitches to hit with afraud behind him. Not impressed.

  64. S.o.S.27 October 30th, 2007 at 7:01 pm

16 homeruns from a right fielder. Not hard to replace.

  65. jyjjy October 30th, 2007 at 7:20 pm

I’m sorry but dropping Abreu for Rowand would obviously be a huge mistake.
Rowand is going to get tons of money(and years) based on last season. Something close to what Matthews Jr got last season isn’t out of the question. Everyone who wants to sign him should look at his stats for 05 & 06. He has had 2 good seasons and been very mediocre otherwise. He is exactly the kind of player a smart team would avoid overpaying.
On the other hand look at Abreu’s stats. He has consistently been a VERY valuable offensive player. The man would be a real superstar but the focus of his game isn’t HRs so he get’s ignored for the most part. In this market he is a steal at 14 mill for 1 year. Even if we didn’t want him on the team we should pick up the option and trade him.

  66. saucy October 31st, 2007 at 10:02 am

agreed that rowand will want too many years. just like hunter. the only free agent OF i see taking a short deal is jones.

  67. Brayden October 31st, 2007 at 3:19 pm

they should keep melky. he’s going to be amazing in a few years
