Dodgers, Torre agree on three-year deal

Peter Abraham
October
30

The Dodgers and Joe Torre have agreed on a three-year deal worth close to $15 million. Torre could be introduced in Los Angeles as soon as Thursday.

This process was started several day ago. A preliminary agreement was reached on Monday, which led to Grady Little being forced to resign.

Good for Joe. It’ll be weird seeing him in Blue next year though.

Maybe I’m crazy but I’d trade Melky plus pitching for Miguel Cabrera and then sign Torri Hunter to replace Melky.

  2. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

And the Dodgers had originally picked up Little’s option?

Dang, not a good day to be Grady.

Glad Torre’s found a home for 2008, hope he does well, and glad that the only time the Yanks will face him is in the World Series, if it comes to that.

  3. Ryan

They only offered Joe $5 million? Thats insulting!

  4. Paul9

I can root for the Dodgers a little bit

  5. EY

I’d be in for a dodgers yankees world series in 08, with Yankees winning in 7. Good luck to Torre.

  6. GreenTeaSucks

I guess sleeping in peace on the bench for $15 mil over 3 years > having to stay awake and earn $16 mil over 2.

  7. Billabong

Torre is a dim-wit. If these numbers are correct, then he is exposing himself as a true hypocrite. The number of years is irrelevant…its simply a golden parachute if and when they can him. Torre has proven an inability to manage in the NL, since you need to be awake to do the double switches, etc. Dodgers just gave a guy a contract into his 70’s, and they are going to regret it.

  8. BBFan

If there is a WS between Yanks and Dodgers, Joe G will outmanage Joe T. It will not be even close. Joe G is a much better in-game tactical manager.

  9. Kill-Schill(ing)

Congrats, Joe. Now, I have to go buy a Dodgers hat to set alongside my Yankees cap.

F.You, Prince Hank and the rest of your lackeys.

  10. Michael

    Peter,

I just want to say you’ve done an amazing job following this story. You’ve beaten everyone on this story, including the LA papers.

    Great work>

  11. J-Dawg

Seeing Rebecca’s quote about a hopeful Yankees vs. Dodgers matchup reminds me- does anyone know yet which National League teams that the Yankees face next year? I think that it might be time for them to face the NL Central but I’m not sure about that. Just wondering, I won’t lose sleep over it yet. :)

I’m watching the Blazers-Spurs game and it reminds me that the NBA schedule stinks. The Grizzlies lost 60 games last year and our first game is tomorrow night, against the defending world champs- the Spurs. I don’t know why we have to start out the year on such a bad note. The Spurs will probably crush us. :(

  12. willis

Who does everyone think Joe will try to take to LA besides Mattingly?

  13. hmmm

“Maybe I’m crazy but I’d trade Melky plus pitching for Miguel Cabrera and then sign Torri Hunter to replace Melky.”

as long you understand that “plus pitching” means Hughes or Joba and then probably Tabata or Austin Jackson.

melky is basically the throw-in part of the deal.

  14. Eric

Kevin Long probably, and maybe Gator (who is getting replaced anyway).

  15. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

J-Dawg: It’s NL Central, but no Cubs =(

  16. Josh

I think they would realize Hughes and Chamberlain are untouchable. Kennedy and other prospects might do the trick.

  17. Little Chip

Do you think anyone else was interviewed???

  18. Where's the Class/

So Joe was negotiating while Grady was still Manager, nice. Seriously, I find that to be pretty classless. How would it look if the Yankees had been talking to Joe G. or Donnie while Joe was still under contract? I was one of those people who actually shed some tears for Torre. Guess he really wasn’t too broken up about the Yankee job, or is this just a “rebound.”

  19. J-Dawg

    Thanks Rebecca.

  20. chiromaniac

i love this friggin blog and the man who makes it. and you can quote me :)

  21. Go NYR

I hope the Dodgers are terrible next year. Torre won because of the situation he was put into, not because he created it. Torre insulted the Yankees in my opinion. He kept taking more money when he won, but did he give any up when he didnt? Dont think so.

  22. Jeff NJ

Congrats to Joe, glad he will get to manage without the insanity that goes on here. Smart call by the Dodgers too. I never had a national league team to root for, now I do. I may have to invest in the baseball package.

  23. Global Warming

3 year deal, who knew the Dodgers were such a classy chise’.

  24. allo?

“The number of years is irrelevant…”

No, Billabong, it’s not. On a one year deal, next year would have been EXACTLY like this year in Yankee-land. Constant speculation about Joe’s job every time they lose three games in a row. The man didn’t want to deal with that, and didn’t want the players to have to deal with that.

Also, like Joe said, it’s a matter of feeling trusted by the front office. A big pay cut (no matter HOW MUCH the final $$ amount is) and big performance-based incentives to “motivate” you AND a one year deal all point to a lack of trust. It’s just true.

  25. hmmm

“They only offered Joe $5 million? Thats insulting!”

yes, but they avoided insulting him further by giving him the ability to earn $3M more.

  26. This (Next) Year

Where’s the class, I agree. Some bigtime hypocrisy going on. Gee, do you think anyone in the media will focus on that? No, of course not. Just St. Joe joining another old time NY team, blah, blah, blah.

  27. Go NYR

Jeff-I now have another team, along with the Mets in the NL to root as hard as possible against.

  28. Global Warming

    allo?,

Your talking to a wall. A very bitter wall.

  29. allo?

“Kennedy and other prospects might do the trick.”

What trick? Getting a soon-to-be DH who has weight problems at 25 and doesn’t care? That’s not an attitude the Yankees need.

  30. Jeff NJ

Uh, I understand being indifferent to Joe, but I don’t get the anger towards him. I mean what did he ever to you? Even if he may have mismanaged a few games, I don’t get your bitterness. You must be a joy to know in the real world.

  31. EY

I like getting Miggy, but I don’t like any of the “pitcher for slugger” ideas. Unless they involve Moose, but I guess that’s not going to happen.

  32. Mehdi hates Randy LEvine

Good luck to Joe Torre in LA. You wont read me say a bad thing about him unlike a lot of these ungrateful louts on these posts. The man won 4 championships for us. More than we could have ever expected. Thanks and good luck.

  33. Diane

Fantastic coverage on this and all the recent Yankee drama, Pete, you seem to be ahead of the pack all the time lately.

I’ve been reading some LAD blogs and fans there seem highly favorable to Torre and think they’ll have better luck attracting good FA’s under him. They even seem to be dreaming of A-Rod. Are they right about the FA draw in general? What about the odds on AR?

  34. Go NYR

Has anybody been paying attention the last 6 years? You dont win Championshipd with hitting. Its all about pitching. Why would we trade young promising pitching for an overweight, poor attitude third basemen? Its like we never learn. You dont win with out pitching. Yes, you need timely hitting, but with out pitching, you cant win. The Yankees have proven that over the past few years. We are finally moving in the right direction andnow we are gonna trade the young pitching that we are getting a sense of pride in? I dont think so.

  35. YanksFanLV

Completely off subject, but when do single game tickets for next season go on sale? I want to plan a trip out to NYC around a late season Yanks-Bosox series?

    thanks

  36. BRags

I’m sure Scott Proctor is thrilled about having Joe as his manager once again. Get ready for early retirement Scotty.

  37. BRags

for all you bad mouthing cabrera, just shut up. the kid is a TREMENDOUS hitter. He’s a star. If he came to this team, Girardi would shape him up.

  38. JonMichel

Joe get’s his childhood wish to be part of the Dodgers legacy when he was a little boy in Brooklyn. To coaching the LA Dodgers.

  39. Go NYR

Mehdi- last time I checked Joe Torre did not play in anyo f those games. Any idiot could figure out they should use Stanton, Mendoza, Nelson, Rivera as your main bullpen pitchers. With that pitching any ML manager could have won the World Series.

  40. Jeter's Future Wife

now you know MLB will put the Mets and the Dodgers on the Yankees inter-league play schedule, and you know FOX will endorse that for ratings!

not to change the subject, but I found an interesting article on NY Times you all should read…..

    http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10.....mp;ei=5087

  41. torre's 3-year nap

Torre taking this contract is living proof he was all about one last easy payday because this Dodgers team won’t equal or better their 2007. His hire was merely “Hey Dodgers fans, we got Joe Torre!”

They have one really good starting pitcher (Brad Penny). Their #2 starter is Derek Lowe who is getting older not better. They have a solid closer, a good bullpen, and 3-4 good young players in Martin, Loney, Ethier, and Kemp, but their offense, defense, rotation, bench, and attitude sucks. I can’t see this team improving on their 82-80 record this year. That team posting that record is living proof the N.L. sucks.

Jeff Kent and Nomar Garciaparra are hasbeen jerks. Juan Pierre and Rafael Furcal are jerks who are soon to be hasbeens. Like Lowe, all will be a year older and not better. Add to that they’re all steps down from Cano, Cabrera, Jeter, and Phillips/Duncan/Betemit sharing 1B (yes I’d take them over Garciaparra), and this has disaster written all over it.

  42. J-Dawg

Kennedy could possibly be had for the right price, but the Yankees won’t go into the offseason looking to trade him. Teams do not go into the offseason blatantly looking to trade players unless the player is a troublemaker and has burned his bridge with a team (see Sheffield, Gary). The Yankees will just casually look around and see if a deal really wows them, then they would possibly consider trading Kennedy.

Kennedy can easily be a fixture in the Yankee rotation for years to come. Ian will also paraphrase a quote from another Kennedy- “ask not what Joe Girardi can do for you, but what you can do for Joe Girardi.” He can do a lot for Girardi and the Yankees. The kid has the stuff, the confidence, and the mental makeup to be a success in the bigs. He has great composure on the mound and you can’t teach that. You either have it or you don’t, it’s inborn.

  43. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop, and David Ortiz ate my hamburger (aka Joe)

    Congrats to Joe T.!

    Congrats to Joe G.!

  44. Jeter's Future Wife

poor Scott Proctor, he must be like a deer in headlights now!

  45. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop, and David Ortiz ate my hamburger (aka Joe)

    Congrats to Joe T!

    Congrats to Joe G!

  46. Joe from Long Island

    1. If the Yanks traded for Miguel Cabrera, I would think that it would be with Girardi’s approval, and, therefore, he would think that he could get through to him and turn him around.

    2. Reports earlier in the day are that the Yanks locked-up Kevin Long with a 3-year, $1M contract – suppposedly unheard-of for a coach.

  47. YankeeJosh

Joba and Hughes should be untouchable. The only way you trade Kennedy is if it’s a package to bring back Sanatana oe a can’t miss pitcher. The Yankees offense took a big hit with A-Rod opting out but they can still score runs. Reinforcing the pitching should be the top concern. That will help them win close games in the playoffs.

  48. Harley

I like Melky a lot. But he’s gone. If only becuz there are so many other free agent options — Hunter, Rowand. The only question is whether it’s in a deal for a pitcher or an everyday player.

  49. jk

Torre is all about the Benjamins..just like anyone else. He turned down $5 mil from NY to get $15 mil from LA. I guess he knows what he is doing. My dream is to reject a job offer and get one for 3X the following week. You can’t blame a guy for dreaming.

  50. Go NYR

Harley- I disagree. He will not be traded unless for a standout pitcher such as Johan Santana or Roy Oswalt.

  51. Brendon

Well Congrats to Joe. Both Joes, it will be interesting to hear what happens with Kevin Long the next few days. As for the Melky for Miguel Cabrera thing, that intrigues me, but I would rather trade Melky to get pitching, we need more pitching.

  52. nathan

Wow — several days !! it wud be funny if it was earlier than his canning.. maybe the week during which he waited?

What does it tell you about Torre that he would negotiate a deal when Little was still the manager?

I guess thats treating other people fair and with honor.

each day, in small increments i despise him more..

This is the second time Little has gotten fired by Torre.. 03 ALCS…

I feel sorry for Grady L.. how ud the whole world react if Joe T was getting canned like this for say L Pinella.. funny how things work out..

i bet Pete Abe is already equipped with a litany of reasons as to why Little should not feel bad abt this…

  53. pat

Guess some of you were wrong. It wasn’t about the money.

  54. pat

Guess some of you were wrong. It wasn’t only about the money.

  55. DJ Lampshade

The LA Dodgers are about to be the favorite National League team of a lot of New Yorkers. I’m actually excited to have another team to root for during what is certain to be an unsettling season for the Yanks (although likely a successful one)!

  56. Catya

My wish for Torre is to represent the nat’l league in th WS.
If the Yankees are there ,I want the Yankees of course to win.If anyone can bring accord to that troubled club house
he’s the man, something Grady couldn’t do this year, best Wishes Mr T, glad you landed on your feet.

  57. murphydog

“If there is a team considering pursuing Rodriguez, it should remember that he has never played in a World Series, and he was a major reason his team didn’t get there the past three seasons.” That’s from his piece in the Times today (thanks to Jeter’s Future Wife for the link).

    Who woke Murray Chass up?

I’m not in love with A-Rod these days, but that last sentence from Chass is crap. Yeah, Rod’s ‘07 playoff production was not good, but he had plenty of company this year and last year. And by the way, you get to the WS with pitching and the Yankess have not had good enough pitching. A-Rod is a real pig for a number of reasons and widespread Rod Rage is justified. But c’mon, Murray. There’s plenty of blame for the playoff failures to go around.

  58. Evil Fox News Shill

Congrats to Joe. I’m sure no one wants to see Joe fail, although it’ll be a bit easier for us all for him to be succeeding with a team we won’t have to deal with us.

    Poor Scotty Proctor….

  59. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

    15 million !! that’s insulting !!

  60. nathan

Lou Pinella in 06 “It is unfair to Joe Torre.. i would never do this to a manager” on speculation abt replacing Torre

Joe Torre in 07 ” Roll over n Vanish or better Die.. u Little”

  61. whoa

    Worst. Contract. Ever.

  62. ORORO

Congrats to Joe and to Pete for the story!!!

  63. pat

    Nathan
Be fair, Joe Girardi did the same thing. He may have even used the Dodgers to get the Yanks to up their offer.

  64. Doug

    From the NYT

Three newcomers are expected to join the staff: Dave Eiland as the pitching coach, Mike Harkey as the bullpen coach, and Bobby Meacham as the third-base coach.

Rob Thomson, a special assignment coach, will inherit Mattingly’s job as the bench coach. The Yankees had offered to let Mattingly stay in that position, but he turned down the job.

Bobby Meacham? Why not Horrace Clark?

  65. Laura

I’m glad that Joe landed on his feet. Can’t root for the Dodgers because I despise the NL (or as I call it “The Minor Leagues in the Major Leagues). I do feel sorry for Scott Proctor though. Who knows? Maybe Dodger Mgmt will invoke the Proctor rules!!!

  66. migames

“What does it tell you about Torre that he would negotiate a deal when Little was still the manager?”

Ok people, get over it. Girardi, our new golden boy, was also negotiating to manage the dodgers *even after* the yankees offered him the job.

Did joe torre really hurt you that much? My god, move on. He has, if you saw him on letterman, he said all nice things about the yankees, stienbrenner and girardi.

How dare he accept a job for 3 more years and 15 million $$$$, how dare he? My god, i swear, this hate towards torre is really really misplaced. So what if the dodgers signed him, thats their problems, we are *yankee* fans. For the love of god, move on

  67. Joey Bagadonuts

    Overheard:

As a manager, Torre’s been very good at three things, dealing with a hot tempered/demanding owner, intense media environment and superstar egos, none of which are applicable in Dodgerland. Managing the actual baseball game is another story

  68. nathan

    Pat:

They had some serious discussions with Donnie B and Joe G before going with Joe G. most of us thought it was 70-30 in favor of Donnie B..

Your stance will hold water if Donnie B was offered the manager job.

Joe Torre is losing a lot of his shine n credibility.. i just hope he doesnt write a book called “how i was insulted”..

The Dodgers showed a lack of class… fire n then hire.. if its is true “as reported by Pete Abe” that discussions were on for several days regarding the job.. it sure casts Joe Torre in some bad light..

between his “dont need incentives” quote and his literally running out Grady Little this is a terrible week for Joe.

This reminds me of the Knick coach that was interim and got swept to the bench when Larry Brown (the HOF coach arrived).. i dont wish bad luck on the dodgers.. i wish Joe torre could have handled this like the way he preached here for 12 years.. wih honor.. respect

  69. kasey

i look forward to following the dodgers season closely.

  70. Buddy Biancalana

Wow, nice sized earthquake just shook San Francisco, like a 5.0.

  71. little m

    My head is spinning . . .

  72. Sparky O

What will Derek call Joe Girardi?

  73. YankeeMel

Good luck to Joe but what happened to interviewing a minority candidate?

Also, nice job to Pete. I read it here first.

  74. mel

How can you guys still hate on Joe? Just be happy that we have a new manager and a great future to look forward to. Go back to hating on Alex. Now he deserves it. ;)

  75. Buddy Biancalana

I read somewhere that Paul O’neill may come back as a coach, but that NY Times article didn’t leave any room on the staff for him, anyone hear any news on Paulie?

  76. Jimbo

Wow, the Torre-Haters are out in force again. I suppose they will keep pickin’ at that scab for quite a while. It must make them feel better.

But of course, there is no hypocrisy on the part of the Yankees front office, who insisted they really, really, really wanted Torre back. But since they just gave their new manager a three year deal, how does that work?

And remember, Joe was ready to sign a one year extension in spring training for less money, but it fell through when Little Stevie got in trouble.

As for negotiating the contract while Grady was still the Dodger’s manager: please, kids, grow up. This is the real world and this happens all the time. Little was a dead man walking, it was just a question of when he was buried.

  77. mel

    Buddy,

It’s a sign. A-zilla coming. Or a PR stunt by Boras. (Hope no one was injured).

  78. Buddy Biancalana

If anyone cares, it was 5.6 earthquake, that’s fairly strong.

  79. Dee

If it’s true that the Dodgers wanted Girardi, it looks like they ended up giving their second choice twice as much $$$ as they were going to give their first choice.

  80. Joe G is the man

Again, Little said he “didn’t know if he wanted to this anymore” before the season even ended, so I can’t say he was forced out. Grady Little isn’t exactly a grade A manager so does it really matter if he was forced out, if that is truly what went on behind the scenes. A team should stay with a bad manager for what reason?
Of course a team owner is going to see what options are out there before they commit to a major change. Are they going to push out Little and then hope they can hire someone?

Torre got what he wanted, a contract that goes longer than a year and what he wanted from the Yankees as it showed trust. A one year contract is what upset Torre and the obvious incentives starting with the ALDS was insulting as it showed that the Yanks did think he needed motivation. Only in Yankee land would a manager be pushed out for getting into the playoffs 12 years straight. On any other team statues would be erected for them. But it was time for a change so I don’t blame the Yanks for what they did. They just could have done it better.

  81. Buddy Biancalana

It the strongest one I have felt since moving out here 6 years ago from NY.

  82. Peter Abraham

What a disgrace some of you people are with these comments about Torre. You should be ashamed of yourself.

By taking less money per year from the Dodgers, he clearly showed it was more about the commitment of the team. Why are you angry a baseball manager wanted another job as a baseball manager? What was he supposed to do, sit in a corner and cry?

As for Grady Little, try and pay attention. He and Coletti hadn’t spoken in three weeks. He was out, it was just a matter of who would replace him.

Girardi used the leverage from the Dodgers to get an extra $1.5 million from the Yankees. The Dodgers made an offer over the weekend. He and Torre did the same exact thing. Given that they are close friends, they probably planned it out.

As for Scott Proctor, he will get a payday in arbitration because of the faith Joe Torre showed in him. Before he played for Torre, Proctor was a failed minor league starter. He’ll probably bank $2.5 million next season. He just became the set-up man for a contending team. I’m sure he’s devastated.

Honestly, the lack of respect some of you have for people is ridiculous. You’re the same dopes who will be ripping Girardi and wanting Torre back if the Yankees miss the playoffs next season.

In case you forgot, the Yankees won 94 games last season. Only two teams won more. They also kicked the crap out of the World Series champions for the better part of the summer.

    Just awful.

  83. Ducky Bent

Once again, Saint Joe Torre’s true colors have come out. His “dignity and “class are and will always be a front.

I just wonder how Saint Joe would have felt if somebody was negotiating with his team’s GM to take HIS job away while he was still under contract.

You have to feel Mr. Grady Little, who can probably teach Torre a thing or two about class. I’m sure Grady won’t make a public display of himself by telling all the world how HE was disrespected, as Saint Joe Torre willingly does during those circle jerk press conferences.

I thank the heavens and stars for Joe Girardi.

  84. Vinny 5743

I just love how people are berating Torre and Girardi for looking into the Dodgers managerial job. How does this put either of them in a bad light ? They didn’t ask to go there, the Dodgers wanted either of them. Little was no great shakes and the team was in turmoil. It was the Dodgers reaching out to these guys, not the other way around. Suddenly we’re all sorry for Little ??? What BS.

They took Torre as second choice only to save some money. If they would have gotten Girardi to sign first, it would have cost them less. Don’t think that didn’t enter into the equation because it most probably did.

I’ll die laughing if the Dodgers face the Yankees in the WS and beat them. It would be the first time Torre won in his 1st year with a club. What will Hank and company say about that !

  85. Jimbo

    Pete,

Nicley done. That is why they pay you the big money…

Didn’t your sister call you “The Mayor of Idiotville”?
Every once in a while we know why.

And Ducky Bent — nice timing on that post. You proved Pete’s point.

  86. Chris

Give it a break Pete. A lot of Yankee fans saw through the Torre B.S. Don’t like it? Tough.

“The LA Dodgers are about to be the favorite National League team of a lot of New Yorkers. I’m actually excited to have another team to root for during what is certain to be an unsettling season for the Yanks (although likely a successful one)!”

I am sure Met fans are going to root for the Dodgers now. Geez. Once the season starts most New Yorkers aren’t going to care about Joe Torre or the Dodgers. Any Yankee fan who roots for the Dodgers is not a real Yankee fan.

  87. nathan

Wow.. Pete.. wt took u so long…

No.. we dont want Torre to sit n cry in a corner.. we want him to sit in a corner while another manager is under contract..

tell us honestly, would ur reaction still be “big deal.. it happens” if Torre was in Little’s shoes and some one else was negotiating while Joe T was under contract?

Many fans have had issues with Joe Torre the tactician not the man.. but it is changing for good reason..

Joe torre claimed infront of a horde of media that the “incentives” were insulting.. when the same Joe Torre had *incentives* in his 2 previous contracts for not only winning the world series but winning 90.. 94 .. 98 games (source: NYT after obtaining his contract papers from MLB commissioner’s office).

If you still do not have a problem with Joe torre contradicting himself or with Joe Torre showing a lack of honor n respect for other managers.. then its a lost cause.. its ironical that u say we refuse to think when u for a second dont step back and reflect on these things..

No one is a fan of Grady Little the man.. we hardly know him.. but the issue we have is not borne from us feeling sry for Little.. it is the disbelief over Torre’s actions and the continued stubborn defense some media men display…

  88. DJ Lampshade

I’m re-watching Girardi’s conference call on YES and am beginning to realize why I’ve had a queasy feeling all day. I’ve been a Yankees fan since I was 5 years old. I went through Billy, Dallas, Bucky, Stump, Sholwalter and of course Torre. The thing is, all those guys I grew up with were pretty much figures walking to the pitchers mound or quotes in the newspaper. Joe Torre was the only Yankee manager that I experienced through this explosion of access and media and he was an absolute master at that part of his job.

My favorite part of a Yankee victory was watching Joe’s post-game interview and I never really experienced it any other way as a Yankee fan. Now I’m pretty depressed because as great as the new Joe may be as an in game tactician (kinda overrated in baseball to begin with) he’ll never match the calm and grace Torre would exude while still being truly genuine about the game we all just watched. Now we basically we’ll be watching another Jeter interview in which we’ll hear a lot of words and get absolutely nothing of substance.

    I’m really sad tonight!

  89. This (Next) Year

Man, Pete really drank the JT kool aid. Even when parting, he cannot brook any dissent. Sorry, Pete, there are some rational– even analytical– different opinions from yours, believe it or not. Torre is a hypocrite, pure and simple. And his isult/dignity crap is just that. Donnie parted wih class; St. Joe did not. His choice.

  90. Jamie

I don’t care about Torre to the Dodgers or wherever. I’m a Yankee fan and I root for the Yankees. Joe Girardi was a fantastic field manager as a catcher, he was a great manager for the Marlins. He knows NY and I’m sure the issues in Florida were already vetted by the baby Steins.

I’m glad to be rid of the phony that was Arod. I’m glad Hank had the gonads to say “Jeter wanted to be a Yankee since he was in the 4th grade.” Suck on that Arod. You are a better player than Jeter but never loved in New York and ask Jeter how many rings he has? Ask him what it feels like knowing he’s going to Monument Park. Cuz you ain’t going.

I can’t wait til ‘08. Young guns, new manager who might actually manage and no more bloated Arod coverage.

    Is it spring training yet?

    Let’s go Yankees!!!!

  91. Ducky Bent

To DJ Lampshade, Jimbo, Pete and other defenders.

Joe Torre is polished. And scripted. And contrived. It was his acquired personality that charmed people. He is a master of handling and manipulating the media and some people fall for it. He is a great entertainer, I will give him that.

But, he is an awful in-game manager, one who no longer had the passion to spark his club as he did his first few years and who is notorious for mishandling the pitching staff. He’ll pitch “favorites” till their arms are ready to fall off.

Now, some who were ready to canonize him for sainthood are seeing him for the true phony that he is. How he is not this benevolent, grandfatherly figure, but instead, a backstabber.

Now little Torre story for you, which never influenced me, but gave me a glimpse of his character. My uncle was involved with the Joe Torre Little League in Brooklyn. This is before Torre struck it rich. Do you know that Saint Joe refused to appear at speaking engagements/dinner for the league that beared his name unless he was paid X amount of bucks, thus denying kids and their parents who paid good money? That for 3 years straight he didn’t appear because the money wasn’t right. One year they upped the ante and he made an appearance and was his usual “charming” self. It took extra money for him to grace everyone with his charm.

THAT my friends, is your beloved Joe Torre.

  92. Ducky Bent

Peter, you contradict yourself when you say “As for Grady Little, try and pay attention. He and Coletti hadn’t spoken in three weeks. He was out, it was just a matter of who would replace him.”

Yet on your front page you wrote: “The Dodgers didn’t force Little out without first knowing they could make a deal with Torre.”

Which one is it? If the latter, then Saint Torre was responsible for a man losing his job, no? I wonder how Torre would have felt if Piniella negotiated with Cashman behind his back last year. Nice, dignified, classy guy, this Joe Torre, eh?

OK, some of you will say, “Didn’t Girardi do the same with the Dodgers?” Well, yes, but we don’t know the extent. BUT, Girardi doesn’t sell himself to be this dignified, honorable saint (like Torre does) who is all about respect, like some cheap used car salesman.

  93. Dee

Guys, it’s not Joe’s fault that you weren’t paying attention when he explained very clearly why he turned the Yanks deal down. It’s the one-year, and the lack of commitment and partnership. I knew Joe was gonna go manage somewhere else and make less money. Again, for the Nth time in case you still haven’t heard, IT’S NOT ABOUT THE MONEY!

  94. nathan

Dee – if u listened… and u never heard the words *incentives were insulting*.. then its not our fault.. maybe u heard a different audio tape?

and how abt running a manager out of work… u Torre backers can never defend that one huh

  95. Born in da Bronx

This is Pete’s blog and he deserves respect for having created it and tolerating the idiocy that sometimes appears here. I grew up in a time where sportsmanship was the most important factor. It was about how you played the game and honored it and respected it. Pete does that all the time and it is very apparent how much he loves the game. Those that berate him are only showing their lack of good manners and respect. One has to wonder how they were raised. Is you take sportsmanship out of sports you take the heart and soul out it. You may not agree with everything or even anything Pete has to say but you should show some respect. You can disagree without resorting to name-calling. You can honor your fellow bloggers and be polite and still get your point across. A number of guys do that here like SJ, etc. This is a public forum not a verbal mosh pit. Respect your fellows, who knows they might even listen to you viewpoint if you stop shouting at them. This is Pete’s blog you should be thanking him and not berating him.

  96. jason

Not sure name calling was done in this thread.. expressing that Pete’s wrong .. dont make u an idiot or arrogant or unsportsmanlike

  97. Born in da Bronx

it was: “Didn’t your sister call you “The Mayor of Idiotvilleâ€??”

and if done rudely is extremely unsportsmanlike.

  98. henry

Oops… forgot this is the suck upto whatever Pete says blog!!

  99. Born in da Bronx

No it is have some manners for a change and stop acting like a child blog.

  100. Mehdi hates Randy LEvine

NYR is any idiot can figure out what to do with this talent then who the F*** cares who the manager is? What’s the point in even interviewing anyone. No he didn’t play any of those games, but if we go for your logic then we would have gotten rid of Mariano long ago for his performances in 2001 and 2004. The only point that really counts is Torre was the manager when the Yankees won. You want to place blame on him for the Yankees not winning then you got to credit him for the times they did and that was 4 World Series championships. That is more than any other fan of any other baseball team can dream of. So again, I wish Joe Torre, Don Mattingly and whoever else he takes from here along with him all the good luck in LA except if they play the Yanks. He’s a legend. He’ll have his number retired and he might even have a plaque out there in monument park one day and he will have deserved all of it. If you dont want to go to the stadium that day and clap for him I’ll take your tickets off of you.

  101. ND Yank

Those of you calling Joe Torre classless for negotiating with the Dodgers while Grady little was the manager have to also call our new manager, you know the one who can do no wrong, Joe Girardi classless. He and his reps have been in constant contact with the Dodgers throughout this whole process as well.

  102. Yoggis

Win or lose, will watch Yankees rest of my life (whoever owns or manages). With joy or suffering, I am not going to change my allegiance (of last 30 years). Always liked Dodgers better than Mets, will watch them with or without Joe. Joe T. is likable to me because he is a New Yorker through and through, tough/practical/smooth/streatsmart/ but not necessary a saint. Was never too comfortable with his handling of the relievers (including Mo). Feel sorry for Donnie and believe that his best interest is to manage the farm team,

  103. a c

you guys are a bunch of homer tools….torre can’t manage, girardi is much better, torre is a hypocrite,etc…..girardi was fired by a bad club, torre has 4 series won under his belt, and he has pride-not a hypocrite at all. this is a badly botched off-season by the yankees – no other way around it. they can still turn it around, but lets not shift focus from the unclassy and embarassing things the yankees have done or had done to them…..add the cherry on top of the sox nwinning the series…

  104. Ducky Bent

Ummm, Born in da Bronx? The person who said “Didn’t your sister call you “The Mayor of Idiotville? was complimenting Pete. He was saying that the posters are idiots and Pete, the mayor, has to deal with us. Get it??

I recommend that you sharpen your comprehension skills before you post and trash other. Your last two posts just make you look silly.

  105. dark1p

If that really was Pete posting a while back, I’m a little surprised at the post. While I realize the media, like the players, just adored Torre for his ‘regular guy’ routine and fatherly qualities, I wouldn’t expect Peter himself to get on the board and berate people for not liking Torre. Not, at least, in the heated fashion of that post. Somehow, I have a hard time believing that Pete actually posted that.

As for Torre, I can understand why some people are upset. You don’t make a career out of being ‘classy’ and then do what Torre did, both upon leaving the Yankees (those were ‘classy’ comments?) and also in potentially forcing out another manager. But the final word on the latter is yet to be written; I don’t think we know the complete story.

Torre did OK while he was here. His teams performed about as well as they would with other managers, the same way the teams Torre managed before the Yankees did. I expect the Dodgers will perform in the same fashion. The man is hardly a genius, but he’s OK.

However, that Little League story, if true, makes me think that my worst suspicions about him might be accurate. Corroboration of that story would be appreciated.

Say, Pete, you’re a reporter. Know anyone would could verify or kibosh that unflattering tale?

  106. Ducky Bent

dark1p, I was a little hesitant when I started to write about that little league incident because 1) It’s obvious that anyone can write anything on the internet and 2) If I needed to corroborate that story I’d have to name names, including my uncle’s. I’m sure they wouldn’t like that nor was it my intent. I just tired of people thinking that Torre is a saint who can do know wrong, walks on water, kisses babies and who has no ulterior motives.

I, as an “anonymous” poster can assure you that it is the truth, as contradicting as that might sound. I’ve posted at this forum a number of times, so it wasn’t a hit and run tactic. Not that you are implying it, but I just want to say that I also don’t have anything personal against Torre. It just is something I carry with me every time Torre plays to the crowd with his disingenuous persona that most people fall for.

It doesn’t make him a bad guy or serial killer; we all have our flaws and skeletons – but he’s certainly not this altruistic good guy who can do no wrong that most people buy into; a character trait which he’s perfected in developing.

I’d gladly provide more info regarding the Little League as long as it doesn’t incriminate anyone.

  107. Ducky Bent

By the way, just to add to my story and as another aside, the Torre’s used to own a sporting goods store in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, blocks away from the high school I once attended, New Utrecht.

Brother Frank Torre used to run it. I’ve met Frank who is a genuinely nice guy and like I said, know people and family members who know Joe to an extent.

That said, the Torre’s are very business-minded, love the almighty dollar, and chose not to offer any discounts, even to the little leaguers who played in the Joe Torre Little League. Horrible people? Not at all. But money does drive them. I suppose this sort of goes hand in hand with my Little League story.

  108. saucy

murphydog. i just want to say i appreciate your posts. i don’t click every link posted here, but thanks for pointing out the Chass stuff, once again…

Bobby Meacham coaching 3rd? i don’t know much about this dude, except he was the first yankee i ever remember my father hating, while watching games growing up…

As for all of the Torre bickering in this thread. ZZZzzzzzzzzz…

  109. Amandla

To Mehdi and ND Yank…I was thinking the exact same things.

  110. Amandla

To Mehdi & ND Yank: I was thinking the exact same things. I was getting all ready to pretty much pose the same arguments.

  111. Born in Brooklyn,N.Y

Joe Torre in 08 Go LA. Dodgers

  112. Carmelo
