Good negotiation on his part. I’m sure the Yankees never thought it would play out that they would have to pay more than $2MM. I’m sure that was due to the last minute Dodgers threat.

  2. Born in da Bronx

Hello Joe! Welcome to the Yanks!

  3. J-Dawg

All right! Now that’s done, and now the Yankees can focus on getting Mo and Jorge back for another two or three years. They can also try to persuade Andy to come back.

  4. Samples

    $2MM annually that is.

  5. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Welcome back.

Wrote a welcome back letter @ my blog…but yeah.

    The future is bright.

  6. matt

    congrats, Joe G!

Pete – nice job on ESPN…listening to you right now.

  7. Luke

Time to move on to the ‘08 season. :)

  8. Pat

    NICE now the work begins.

  9. JJ

    good luck to Both Joes
Just thought of something Proctor must be icing his arm already now that he has to deal with Joe burning him out again

  10. Jeff

Does this mean they have an answer to who the coaches will be? Who do you think the coaches will be?

  11. David

not to be a complete dork, but 7.5M over 3 years is 2.5 Million not 2M. 2.5 Mil is probably top 5 in baseball for a guy with one of year of experience. Maybe that degree from Northwestern works…

  12. Matt Schweber

Pete, Congrats on that Torre scoop.

I turned on the WFAN last night and Steve Sommers must have invoked your name about four times. I kept waiting to hear him wish you a “Mazzel Tov”

But since he didn’t, I will.

Now for your next exclusive scoop I’d love to hear, “Yankees acquire Miguel Cabrera from Marlins”.

  13. Patch

anyone hear a rumor that A-Rod opted out early so that he could sign a contract before the Mitchell Report got released?

  14. Providence

All right, it’s a done deal; at last let’s move on. How about:

    CF Jeter
    SS Cano
    3B Miguel Cabrera
    LF Matsui
    RF Abreu
    C Posada
    DH Giambi/Duncan
    CF Melky
    3B Joe Crede
    1B Minky

It may not be the kind of “All Star at every position” lineup we’ve gotten used to, but I think it’ll do fine, even in the AL. We just need more consistent starting pitching. Figuring we’d give up Kennedy and someone else to get Miguel C., what about:

    1. Wang
    2. Pettite
    3. Hughes
    4. Chamberlain
    5. Mussina/A serviceable, midlevel addition

  15. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

Torre would have been insulted by that deal ;)

  16. Don Capone (Designated Blogger)

Nice deal for Girardi. I think Pena will be bench coach, hopefully Bowa at 3rd. Pitching coach is the big question.

  17. Providence

Oops, meant to leave Crede off my lineup… Unless, we can’t get Miguel, that is.

  18. Pete

    >> CF Jeter
    SS Cano
    3B Miguel Cabrera
    LF Matsui
    RF Abreu
    C Posada
    DH Giambi/Duncan
    CF Melky
    3B Joe Crede
    1B Minky >>

Wow, 3B is crowded. How about one of those guys moves over to second?

  19. #9

“anyone hear a rumor that A-Rod opted out early so that he could sign a contract before the Mitchell Report got released?”

No but that thought did cross my mind a couple of times.

    I mean – what’s the rush?

  20. Rob L.

nice job the way the Yankees threw Mattingly out like a peace of garbage. Nice going George. The only true Yankee out there and he’s gets pushed aside for Girardi.

  21. Chris NY

who would we give them for Miguel Cabrera? No-one I’d want to part with would be good enough for FL to make that trade.

Can Cabrera even still play third or has he reached Refrigerator Perry’s weight class yet?

  22. Hughes Your Daddy?

    Providence.

    I guess to replace A-rod we’ll need 2 gloves at 3B huh?

  23. Count of Montefusco

Providence, you have ten players in that lineup and 2 center fielders.

That said, as much as I love Melky, I have a feeling Jeter would be an EXCELLENT center fielder. It would make sense as a transition a la Robin Yount. He tracks fly balls exceptionally well and has the speed. I’m hoping he can be lured there with the promise of a mantle (pun intended) inherited.

  24. Rockin' Rich

    Whoah! That’s alot of glue!

  25. David

What about trading for Tejada? He would cost less in a trade, he would play 3B better than Cabrera, and is a total gamer whose intensity and love for the game would be a great addition.

Miggy Cabrera is so good, but I live in Miami and watching Marlins games you can see him get bigger every at bat, his weight is a MAJOR issue. Plus he has a lot of Manny-esque airheadedness in him, which is tolerable if he still hits, but is a red flag at least. He would cost a TON in prospects.

  26. Count of Montefusco

    Girardi’s not a “true Yankee”?

Huh. I thought those were THREE RINGS on his fingers, but it must just be the glare.

  27. Rob L.

how bout we bring back aaron boone to play 3rd?

  28. Global Warming

Girardi already makes a ton more than Francona.

I know talk of the Sox is Taboo but that guy deserves a giant raise.

  29. CheMistry

    >> CF Jeter

  30. jay destro

    that’s my man!

  31. E-ROC

Finally, it’s official. Girardi is the Yankees manager. Cabrera is too expensive. Joe Crede could be expensive. Ken Williams will ask for something of value. Just ask the Phillies.

  32. ND Yank

Why would A-rod have to opt out before the Mitchell investigation names are released to sign a new contract? He was already under contract and could’ve reupped with the Yanks sooner than signing a FA deal with another team. That rumor makes absolutely no sense.

As for thinking we’re getting Miguel Cabrera for Kennedy and another player not named Hughes or Chamberlin you’re kidding yourself. Keep dreaming. It’ll take a ton to get Cabrera.

  33. Jeremy

    Awesome.

  34. Hughes Your Daddy?

    CheMistry

You can’t have that lineup AND Santana.

  35. Fernando Alejandro

Cabrera is not a good choice. He’ll cost too much, and his refusal to stay in shape will end in long absences due to injuries.

  36. Hughes Your Daddy?

What about trading Matsui? Anyone else hear rumors about that potentially happening?

  37. Raj

Great news from Yankee camp. Joe Girardi is going to do great and at a lesser price than Joe Torre. One thing for sure is the Yankees will put the winning brand of baseball on the field and show class off the field. Don’t expect anything less.

    Go Yankees.

  38. Jeter's Future Wife

    Brosius!!! bring him back!

  39. Raj

If Matsui can be dealt, that would be a good move IMO. Fukudome would be a better option in left field than Matsui.

  40. Jeter's Future Wife

    what is the Mitchell Report?

  41. migames

One thing for sure is the Yankees will put the winning brand of baseball on the field and show class off the field. Don’t expect anything less.

same could be said about torre and mattingly

  42. Providence

    Well, here’s what I intended…

    SS Jeter
    2B Cano
    3B Miguel Cabrera
    LF Matsui
    RF Abreu
    C Posada
    DH Giambi/Duncan
    CF Melky
    1B Minky

My thought process for Miguel C. was Ian Kennedy, Tyler Clippard and Wilson Betemit. I think that still leaves the Yanks with a fair amount of young pitching potential (i.e. Ohlendorf, Wright, DeSalvo, et al), while giving the Marlins 2 high quality pitching prospects and an everyday 3B.

  43. Fernando Alejandro

Matsui has a no-trade clause so there’s no chance of that. Damon’s been rumored, but we shouldn’t trade him. He’s too good defensively, and we’ll need him regularly when Matsui’s knee’s no longer hold up.

  44. ORORO

well I guess Girardi is giving the Yanks a new version of blue balls.

  45. Pauly One

    08 starters

    CF Rowand – VIA FA
    3b Crede – Via Trade
    SS Jeter
    2b Cano
    LF Damon

    C Posada
1b Robert Fick – VIA FA

    Pitchers
    Joba
    Hughes
    Wang
    Moose
    Pettite

    Closer
    Rivera

The Tejada idea intrigues me. He supposedly wants out of Baltimore. maybe a salary dump type of trade would help us get him a a reasonable price.

“anyone hear a rumor that A-Rod opted out early so that he could sign a contract before the Mitchell Report got released?â€?———————————
I thought about it but then wouldn’t it be the other way around if that were true, Alex Rodriguez is at a peak value if his name were to be in the Mitchell report he’d be signing an extension as soon as possible because of the risk he loses value over the winter if it dragged on.

My guess his name is definitely not on the report because Boras has opted out and Alex might be the rare slugger who’s name isn’t on that report driving the value higher than it already is. :(

  48. pat

I believe that when A-Rod opted out, he became a free agent and as a free agent the only team he can negotiate with for 15 days after the WS is the Yankees. If he thought he was going to be part of a Mitchell Report and needed to get a deal done ASAP, he would have signed an extension with the Yankees immediately because no one knows when the Mitchell Report is coming.

  49. ND Yank

Prov – It’ll take more than Kennedy, Clippard and Betemit to get Cabrera. Cabrera is young and can rake. No glove and he has to start taking care of his body.

Tejada is on the downside. The roids are wearing off.

—————————————(The Yankees are not trading prospects for Miguel Cabrera or Johan Santana when they most likely hit FA next year & it makes no sense in a transtion year.)

  51. allo?

“If Matsui can be dealt, that would be a good move IMO. Fukudome would be a better option in left field than Matsui.”

We’d already have Damon in LF.

Miguel Cabrera is a bad call. He won’t be a 3b for long, and he’s bad at it now. We don’t need another DH that we have to stick in the field.

Miguel Tejada…was someone talking about his “intensity and love for the game”? This is a guy who habitually does not run out ground balls. He nixed deals to go to other teams and play 3B. He has a TERRIBLE attitude. I really don’t want him on the team not busting it down the line on every grounder. Cano already has some bad tendencies…giving him Tejada as a role model will only make them worse. Let him continue to take his cues from guys like Jeter who never dog it on the field.

As for Jeter in CF…um, his range is an issue at SS. Won’t it be an issue in CF too? And who plays SS after that?

  52. Fernando Alejandro

Tejada’s an intriguing option depending on his price tag. He’s familiar with the AL East, and has decent power. Baltimore would be happy to get rid of his contract, and Tejada wants off the team. The question is, what will Baltimore want in return?

  53. mko

Why is everybody talking about Miguel Cabrera? If he doesn’t change his attitude soon he’s gonna end as a fat DH in a couple of years – I wouldn’t risk trading prospects for that guy.

And Tejada said last season that he was not going to move to third base (for the Orioles at least).

  54. migames

It takes longer for balls to get to CF then to SS.

  55. OC YankeesFan

If A-Rod’s name is mentioned in the Mitchell Report, wouldn’t he and Boras be hurrying to negotiate an extension with the Yankees before that became public? Seems to me that having his name surface in that report would hurt him on the open market.

I just hope he signs with the Giants. I’d hate to have to listen to his name on the local news every night. A-Rod and Kobe in the same county????

  56. jk

3 years of Girardi for the price of 1 year of Torre. I expect this to be reflected in 2008 Stadium beer prices.

  57. E-ROC

Cashman will go young and cheap at 3B. Edwin Encarnacion, Yunel Escobar, Jeff Keppinger, and Chase Headley. Two of those might cost a little more, but the reward might outweigh the risk.

  58. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

Miguel Tejada is a good bet to be in the Mitchell Report why would the Yankees take bad publicity w/ another former Oakland A’s steroid user ?

Jeter doesn’t have the up the middle range at SS why would he have CF range especially now, if anything 3B, mostly 2B or 1B is where he would end up.

The future CF of the Yankees is in HWL CF Austin Jackson some compare him to Curtis Granderson meets Tori Hunter

  59. Fernando Alejandro

Tejada is unhappy in Baltimore, and I think that has led to the attitude issues. He wants to be on a contender, and he may very well consider player third base for the Yankees. I’m not saying that to defend his bad attitude, I’m just saying that it may subside coming to the Yankees. He’s owed $12 million next year, and Baltimore could buy a lot of crappy releivers for that kind of money.

  60. G. Love

My issue with Miguel Cabrera is his conditioning. It would suck to go from Arod who took great care of his body to a guy with immense talent who is battling weight problems already in his mid 20’s.

If we could get Miguel Cabrera w/o having to give up Joba or Hughes, then you do it. Kennedy, Melky and whatever else it may take would be possible to swallow.

In that situation, we sign a CF (maybe even take the 1 year flier on Andruw Jones) and if Cabrera can’t play 3rd, we move him to 1b and still get a 3b or move Cano to 3rd.

The only reason I’d move Cano to 3b would be to protect his legs from people sliding into him at 2b. But let’s assume we leave him at 2b and we can make a trade for Cabrera and sign either Andruw Jones/Rowland/Hunter for CF if we have to trade Melky.

    Damon LF
    Jeter SS
    Abreu RF
    Cabrera 3b
    Andruw Jones CF
    Posada C
    Giambi/Matsui DH
    Cano 2b
    Duncan 1b

I would sign up for that team for next year, although I would miss Melky a lot.

I also would rather take a short term high salary flier on Andruw Jones than get locked into a declining Tori Hunter.

Still with that lineup we have right handed power from Cabrera, Andruw Jones, Posada, Shelley and a little pop from Jeter. The lineup would be balanced, although the defense would take a hit.

I think what Cash has to find out is can he trade Kennedy/Melky + lower prospects for Johan or Miguel Cabrera. The thing about Johan is you can wait a year and overpay him as a free agent, but you run the risk that the team he’s traded to locks him up first.

  61. E-ROC

Maybe throw Chad Tracy out there too.

  62. AJ

    Providence-

Why are you so quick to get rid of Ian Kennedy? In case you have not seen him pitch he actually looked better than Hughes did this year.Granted Hughes pitched well in the playoffs,Kennedy caught my attention in his 3 starts. I say we keep all 3 Joba,IPK and Hughes. Build around them and develop a 3rd basemen in the system. Besides I don’t think the relationship with Joe G. and Miguel in Florida was pretty. If anyone should be traded it should be the highest paid pinch hitter in baseball.Last name begins with a G and ends with an I.

  63. JonMichel

You know I would like the Yanks to trade for Adam LaRoche of the Dodgers.

  64. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

    G. Love – (There is no chance that Andrew Jones takes a 1yr. deal that is severely low balling him & he’s not even worth that anymore)

Fernando Alejandro – (Tejada is a sure bet to be in the list names of the Mitchell Report, completely horrible idea, plus why again would Baltimore deal him for relievers when even Arte Moreno was set to trade 2/3 of his rotation and Angelos turned it down ?)

  65. Giuseppe Franco

Let’s get this straight. Enough of the Johan Santana and Miguel Cabrera stuff.

Neither of those guys are coming to the Yankees unless Cashman parts with Hughes and/or Joba.

It ain’t happening. Kennedy and Melky ain’t gonna get it done. They are going to want top-notch young talent in return and Cashman won’t deal them.

You can’t trade a bag of sh!t for a bag of gold.

  66. pat

The only managers who made more than that in 2007 were Torre, Pinella, Cox and LaRussa. That’s some pretty experienced company Joe G. is in.

Dusty Baker agreed to 3.5 with the Reds next year. What do you think Torre would get in LA? I’d guess something in the $4-5M range.

  67. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

JonMichel – (I know, not happening)

  68. Jon

    Pauly One;

    ROBERT FICK?!!? Seriously? Wow.

  69. randy l

i totally like having girardi as the manager of the yankees.rather than going with big names at third and first which are the big holes now in the offense, maybe girardi will be able to pull an unknown out of his hat that no one is thinking about. he seemed to do this with the marlins(uggla). working with cashman, maybe he’ll be able to fill the positions with under the radar players.
my hope is that girardi will develop a style of play that emphasizes situational hitting. the one thing that i did not like about arod was that he couldn’t put the ball in play at will. some power hitters can. they shorten up. they swing inside out. they do things that increase the chance of contact at the sacrifice of power. knowing a hitter can make contact allows a manager like girardi to be more creative. i hope they fill these spots with these kinds of hitters.

mike lowell is a good example of a hitter who does this. he’s normally a pull hitter, but with men in scoring position he goes up the middle and is generally a tough out. he’s probably going to get overpaid for his next four years so i don’t know if the yankees would go that route. it’s not a bad idea though for one of the positions. he himself said he learned to play hardnosed baseball growing up in the yankee system. so he’d fit right in.

  70. allo?

“Why are you so quick to get rid of Ian Kennedy? In case you have not seen him pitch he actually looked better than Hughes did this year.”

We’re not. But you have to give something to get something. And Santana is still young, and we KNOW he’s an ace in major league baseball. Don’t fall victim to small sample size. Hughes’ velocity dropped a bunch after the hammy and ankle issue. A full offseason should get him back where he needs to be. It’s also a good sign the he figured out how to succeed without his best stuff. Took him a few games, but he’s 21 and never had to do that before.

“Build around them and develop a 3rd basemen in the system.”

That easy, is it? The Yanks have NO good IF prospects above A ball.

“If anyone should be traded it should be the highest paid pinch hitter in baseball.Last name begins with a G and ends with an I.”

He’s got a no-trade clause and doesn’t want to leave. Also, no one wants him. How do you trade him?

If they can flip Kennedy, Melky and someone like Horne for Santana…they have to do it, provided that he signs and extension. Then, look into convincing Matsui to accept a trade somewhere for some top position player prospects, and perhaps some relief pitching or a good RH 1B. Not an elite 1B, but someone with 20 HR pop and good plate discipline that won’t kill you with the glove.

  71. G. Love

    Brandon,

I’ve heard the rumors on a lot of different outlets for awhile that Andruw might have to take a 1 year deal like Millwood did to prove his worth and that last season was an aberration. That was the only reason why I suggested the one year deal.

As for Kennedy, I think he’s going to be a good pitcher, but I’m keeping Hughes and Joba who are the power arms. Power arms are tough to develop and if Pettite comes back, a rotation of Pettite, Joba, Wang, Hughes, Mussina/other rookies is good enough for me to trade Kennedy for.

And for the record, I don’t think for a second that Melky and Kennedy are garbage and I don’t think many other GM’s in the league would think that either. They will both be very productive major league players. Are they franchise players? Probably not, but I wouldn’t trade the two of them for anything less than Johan, Miguel Cabrera types. If we’re not getting a franchise pitcher/hitter than we don’t deal them.

  72. allo?

“They are going to want top-notch young talent in return and Cashman won’t deal them.”

Kennedy was the minor league pitcher of the year. He is top-notch talent. It all depends on what the Twins can get elsewhere. If they can get Buchholz + Crisp and a good prospect or Homer Bailey, a CF/2B and a prospect…then we need to include Joba or Hughes. But, if no one’s topping Kennedy, a switch hitting OFer with CF speed and a great arm that’s 23 and cheap, and perhaps another very good young pitcher…

  73. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

randy l – (Lowell in Fenway great hitter, Lowell everywhere else…)

    .276/.339/.428

    $ 56 million for 4 yrs. :(

  74. sunny615

From what I have been reading around the web, these are the teams most consider in play for arod’s services and their percieved stances on getting a $30 mil per player:

    Giants – yes
Dodgers – yes (tho the Torre hiring my deter arod)
Angels – Moreno says no, the GM Reagins will not rule it out so – yes
    Cubs – no (ownership issues)
BoSox – no (keep lowell – Arod will ruin team chemistry – go figure)
    Phillies – no
    Mets – no
    Tigers – no
    White Sox – hell no
Yankees – hell no and go burn.

So my money is on the Angels. Even tho some people are saying that Moreno specifically told Selig he’s not entering the Arod derby, I think he’s full of hot air. Arod will be a LA Angel of Anahiem by January.

You know what sucks.. i go to law school here in boston and im in the library looking at tremont st. where the parade will go down….. thousands of people freaking out …. yet the chant is still YANKEES SUCK…. wonder why

  76. Gayle

Please remeber that Andruw Jones’ agent is Scott Boras he will hold out for as long as possible to get the most money no matter who it is (see jeff Weaver)

  77. Miller

I can’t believe some of you are actually buying Jeter in center. He has trouble making the throw from shortstop to first base!

  78. E-ROC

There is no need to pay twice for Cabrera and Santana.

  79. migames

Rob NY, i think that every year we should chant 1918

  80. Joe

    This from the AP…
Rivera and his agent, Fernando Cuza, were at Legends Field in Tampa on Tuesday, presumably to meet with Yankees officials. The ace reliever, who has filed for free agency, said only, “We’ve got to see something.”

  81. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

G.Love, Not a chance that Andrew Jones takes a 1 yr. deal

    Andruw Jones OF
    6 years/$75M (2002-07)
    agent: Scott Boras
    ML service: 10.047

  82. CaptainsCorner

Daily News is reporting that Rivera and his agent are at Legends Field now meeting with Cash and the Steins. Hopefully they can get something done.

When asked if he was meeting with the Yankees, Rivera said, “Yeah. We have to see something.” Rivera declined further comment, telling reporters he would elaborate on his way out of the ballpark.

  83. Mo

Well, Rob Neyer and Keith Law both said Wang, Kennedy, and Melky is too much for Santana. I could see Wang, Melky, and Marquez getting it done.

  84. This (Next) Year

Mo and his agent are meeting with Yankees at Legends Field right now.

  85. Miller

    ROB NY,

Where do you go to law school?

  86. B

I think the Giants are the best fit and likely destination for A-Rod. I’d be surprised if he ended up anywhere else.

  87. migames

    “We’ve got to see something.

That something is something green with a ton of dead presidents on it

  88. Chuck

Rob L., if you think that Girardi is not a “true yankee” then you are not a “true yankee fan.”

Everyone else on Miguel Cabrera: I don’t sell the farm for this guy. Attitude and weight problems—do we really need another head case now?

I hear Aaron Boone is a free agent…

  89. AJ

    Allo-

Santana has alot of innings on that arm. I don’t believe the Twins will trade him. But if they do it WILL take Hughes,Joba and company. I don’t see the Twins taking Kennedy and Melky and calling it a day. Personally I would leave Betemit at 3rd. Give him a shot.Remember last season we had a couple of A-ball guys that were pitchers. Now we are the ones screaming to build around them. It is not impossible to develop a 3rd baseman in a years time. Brad Suttle?
As for Giambi the orangazation lost all faith in this guy. They benched him throughout the playoffs. That should show you right there they are ready to dump him. Matsui cannot be moved due to the revenue from Japan. Even though the guy can’t play left he is good for business.

  90. Rob NY

i go to suffolk law school…. and these people are hilarious …. “YANKEES SUCK YANKEES SUCK”

maybe my yankees hat set them off on my way in the building

Congratulations to Girardi. I like his no-nonsense style. This is baseball, not politics. At least he won’t have to deal with A-drama.

Lock up Kevin Long before he follows A-rod. A-rod raved about him, unless that was fake, too.

Jason Smith played Boras’ interview where he said he didn’t know how a reporter “somehow” got hold of the story. And then Jason played back an interview with Jon Heyman from Sunday night who said that he had spoken with Boras “about 45 minutes ago” and that’s how he found out about the opt-out during the Boston game. Last night there was a link at espn.com about Heyman hushing the scoop. But alas, the cleanup job is complete, the link is gone.

Congrats to Torre if he takes the job. If he doesn’t, maybe they’ll hire Mattingly. lol.

A-rod’s opt out wasn’t leverage to get more money, he simply didn’t want to be a Yankee. This was an opportunity to gain the lifelong love of the city who’s attention he craves. He could’ve become a very wealthy old man playing for an organization where he could’ve passed all the immortals. Early on it was the self-induced pressure, the fans, Jeter, and later on Torre. He had one friend besides Doug? Who knows, he probably wants to play shortstop and maybe be the captain of a team.

Best wishes and thank goodness we don’t have to defend his motivational “tactics” when he does boneheaded things like shout “ha” at an infielder. Personally, I think he left because he didn’t want this father figure to drag him by his uniform into the tunnel if he did anything stupid impulsive like he did in Toronto. And for those of you who are hoping that Alex will come back, Hank’s ruined any chance of that happening because he loves the sound of his own voice.

Also, don’t think Mo would choose Torre over the Yankees. I read that Pettitte would probably be back with another option.

Also, Alex’s name won’t be on any report. Even with the very remote chance that he did get caught, his name would be purged from the list. MLB may be pissed at Boras, but they need Alex to be the face of MLB.

Rob NY: Boston fans (and residents) still have an inferiority complex due to the history of the Yankees (and the stature of NYC as a city). Their obsession with NY should let you laugh at them and pity them because they can’t truly enjoy their victory with the overwhelming hatred in their hearts. When the Yankees were winning World Series, I never thought of the Red Sox during the victory celebrations.

  93. E-ROC

    Cory Koskie??

  94. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

Johan Santana is a FA after this season he’s not signing extensions w/ anybody, he most likely will go for the $$$ next season, NOT WORTH PROSPECTS AT ALL

  95. This (Next) Year

Rob, NY. I have lived in this God forsaken town for a lot of years. Coincidentally, I did not make it to work today. I know you would agree that this is such a classy town with such classy people. Console yourself with this notion: it is actually hilarious that these mean-spirited, vitriolic people cannot enjoy such a wonderful moment without being filled with hatred and spite. It is a parochial, racist and small-minded place with an enormous inferiority complex. Bottom line: no matter the physical beauty, it can never be NY. And they know it.

  96. SJ44

Forget Miguel Tejada. The LAST thing this team needs is Miguel Tejada.

Cashman is in Tampa today. I am assuming its because of the Rivera and Posada talks.

Its also why there is just a conference call and no NY PC announcing Girardi’s hire.

As Randy stated, the Yankees don’t need to go the “big name route” to fill their needs.

In case anybody hasn’t been paying attention, that’s been a failed strategy the last 4 years.

There are more than enough adequate third and first basemen available to fill their needs. Its more important to find guys who fit in and can be productive in their roles than to find star power. Its not a team lacking in stars.

Wang, Kennedy AND Melky for Santana? That’s not even logical. Way too much for him.

Kennedy OR Wang, Melky and a low level minor leaguer with some upside (like Michael Dunn or George Kontos) is as far as the Yankees should go. Assuming, of course Santana agrees to a contract extension.

    No extension, no deal.

  97. jennifer- Congrats Joe G

The Yankees should do what ever it takes to get Mo taken care of. Announce both Joe G and Mo at same time.

  98. Giff

Pete, nice scoop on this story. I don’t know how you pulled it off, but you’re a force to be reckoned with in the sports news world.

  99. randy l

“Enough of the Johan Santana and Miguel Cabrera stuff.
Neither of those guys are coming to the Yankees unless Cashman parts with Hughes and/or Joba.”
i don’t see it happening either. assuming the yankees sign posada and rivera, and pettite comes back, they’ve only lost one key player. that could happen due to an injury. good teams overcome the loss of one player. with a new style of play under girardi leadership who knows what’s going to happen with this team. i think we’re going to have to see girardi’s team play before we know where the yankees are at. i wouldn’t give up the kids at this point.
i would, however, like to see cashman invest in the bullpen heavily. the yankees are going to need some veteran arms to suck up innings to keep the young starters innings down. once the yankees see what they have with a girardi led team, maybe they could go for a big splash at trading deadline. i’d wait at this point because they started down this road of youth and they might as well play it out.

  100. CaptainsCorner

I hope Rivera doesnt mean with “we have to see something”, is they are going to question the Steins if they are a different cheaper organization now. With Arod gone now he is worried and will be asking how the org. is going to be run. I hope they dont have to deal with that with Rivera.

  101. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

  103. There is no I in team

Today’s N.Y. Daily News reported that Cano said he wouldn’t want to move to 3B as he’s “comfortable” at 2B when interviewed on an XM satellite radio show. I wouldn’t call him a “me, myself, and I” player yet, but you have to be concerned. I find his remarks disturbing because where did the subject of him moving to 3B come from? A question? Him making unsolicited comments possibly based on internal talks he’s had with the team he really should keep within the walls of the organization? Did he read his name among Peter’s list of potential successors to A-Rod on this blog :)? Like Peter said, it’s easier to get a new 2B than a 3B,
so Cano to 3B and a new 2B is plausible in theory. Thoughts?

I’m not saying “move Cano to 3B” but if it got to the point where Cano had to be moved to 3B because the choices out there are just unacceptable, so be it. What can you do? Is Lowell really leaving a team he just won a World Series and M.V.P. award in that series with? The guy’s turning 34 next February, he may decide to stay put. I don’t see him leaving them and wouldn’t blame him. He’s Red Sox royalty along with Ramirez, Ortiz, and Schilling et.al.

Anyone who wants to run off names of 3B not named Lowell, Crede, Beltre, Boone, and Feliz so Cano can stay put at 2B, I’m all ears. The problem with getting a 3B better than the above listed is chances are that 3B is making very little money e.g. Kevin Kouzmanoff of San Diego. He posted 18 HR and 74 RBI for S.D. this year but he’s only 25 and makes no money, so why would S.D. trade him unless you offered say Ian Kennedy? I would not make that deal. And who plays 3B for S.D? Forget getting Ryan Zimmerman from D.C. without D.C. asking for Hughes or Chamberlain which ends the conversation. The only way you get a good young 3B is if the team he plays for has a 3B as good as or better than him who could step in. Who are those teams?

I’d rather have Cano at 3B and sign a competent 2B than overpay for Lowell in years and money, trade for any one of the flunkies being bandied about (Crede, Beltre, guys worse than them), sign Pedro Feliz, re-sign Aaron Boone (please), or take a chance with pudgy, free-swinging Betemit. Too bad Kelly Johnson of Atlanta has no power and is lefthanded (Yanks have a glut of lefthanded bats) because he’d be the perfect #9 slot hitting 2B. Don’t even mention Scott Rolen or Miguel Tejada, please.

What if the Yanks can’t sign Lowell or trade for someone better than flunkies Crede and Beltre? They could move Cano to 3B and sign Mark Loretta. Loretta is old (36) but he is a career .298 hitter with a career .761 OPS (.362 OBP + .399 SLG) which is pretty damn good for a 2B. He posted .287/ .352/ .372 for lousy Houston this year and has struck out only 554 times in 5,370 career at bats including 41 SO in 460 AB this year, so he puts the ball in play. He made only $2.5M in base salary this year ($1M in bonuses I don’t think he earned). He’d be the perfect one year stopgap 2B-#9 hitter. I’d rather have Cano 3B-Loretta 2B than Cano 2B-Crede or Beltre 3B. I’d want Cano 2B-Lowell 3B but again, Lowell may decide to stay with Boston or maybe sign elsewhere? The guy can write his own ticket.

B.t.w. I mention Loretta cuz he is the only good free agent 2B listed on Cot’s Baseball Contracts.

    Also Cano 3B-Loretta 2B > Cano 2B-Crede/Beltre/Feliz 3B

  115. Phil

Mo Rivera and Fern Cuza are meeting with the Yanks at the Tampa complex right now.

  116. nate c.

SJ – did you listen to the Boras interview on Michael K?

It was a pretty interesting reminder of how convincing (albeit slimy) Boras really is. I was picturing him showing graphs, charts, facts on powerpoint to Alex as they sat together in a conference room in LA. Boras just going on and on and on and on about Alex’s value. And Alex, drinking in every single second of it…

I though Kay did a good job of asking a lot of the obvious questions, but Boras was ready for all of them.

Whatever happens, this is the ‘Winter of Rod’ just the way Boras wants it.

  117. SJ44

Not easy to play third base and I don’t think I would move Cano to third.

He would have to change his entire throwing motion (over the top, rather than 3/4) and all that change could mess with his head at the plate.

They can find a third baseman. I wouldn’t move Cano and I hope they don’t.

Isn’t it interesting? Mo has no problems returning phone calls or having face to face meetings with Yankee management. A sign that things are close to getting done between he and the Yankees.

Arod wouldn’t even return a call, let alone agree to a sitdown.

Two guys, in the same situation, handling things in a VERY different fashion.

Its why one guy is very popular with fans and his peers and the other guy, no matter how great a player he may be, is not.

Some of these options people are throwing around sound really bad. Crede, Loretta, Koskie, and Boone are not good options. I’d also like to keep Cano at 2B. He’s a plus fielder and that bat becomes much more average at 3B. And to the guys that are bringing up Suttle, Pete is an idiot and Suttle is not close to being ready and won’t be until at best late 2009.

  120. jennifer- Congrats Joe G
    • I was picturing him showing graphs, charts, facts on powerpoint to Alex as they sat together in a conference room in LA.

    Guys,
Leave the GM duties to Brian Cashman…Please…

Why so gung ho to trade away the young pitching in a transition year. Wouldn’t it be fun to watch a team trying to scratch and claw their way to a play-off berth? This team has done the F/A thing and traded away youngsters in vain for the last few years. It is time to follow a plan that plan has already been implemented by Cashman. Let’s see it through. Stop being so spoiled and insisting on making it to the WS next year it will not happen. The Redsox are dominating right now because they took a step back after their 04 Championship and let some of the kids work their way into the line-up. They then filled in their needs with some good deal making and acquiring a young Beckett. Their team is going to be tough to deal with for some time with kids like Pedrioa and Elsbury…the Yankees need to follow their plan and work in the kids and fill in with F/A or Trades when they are ready. Santana is a piece of the puzzle like Beckett was, They should acquire him B4 anyone else. The 3rd base situation can be done with a lesser deal like Beltre. Maybe Matsui and Igawa. Matsui would have to ok the deal with his no-trade but I think he may enjoy playing closer to home and along side his fellow countrymen. When 09 rolls along the Yankees will have a lot of money coming off the books to pursue a better class of F/A’s if they even need to by then There will be some valuable options at the trade deadline next season as well with so many f/a’s say someone like Fuentes from Colorado, he handled the lefties on the Sox pretty well. This will be a two year process and I would bet the Ranch on a World Series berth in 2009!

  125. B

Even though he’s a pretty horrible fielder, I’d be interested in trying to trade for Kouzmanoff. Not sure what the Padres would want for him, but with Headley essentially MLB ready and Gonzalez at 1B they might not have a spot for him and could look to move him.

From ESPN after Tim Duncan signed a contract extension with the Spurs for 2 years and 40 million:

Duncan could have signed for several millions more than the reported $40 million but, citing Duncan’s agent, Lon Babby, Yahoo.com said the player wanted to allow the Spurs to build around him in future seasons.

Too bad A-Fraud wasn’t like Timmy.

  128. Drew

Pete- your buddy Mark Feinsand is reporting that Mo is meeting with the Yankees this morning and Mo confirmed it.

  129. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

JAime, horrible example because Duncan doesn’t have a bad reputation in San Antonio and his agent isn’t Scott Boras, what the hell is w/ the pot shots ..grow up

  130. J-Dawg

Just like it was mentioned earlier, it would be a disaster for Major League Baseball if Rodriguez’s name comes out on the Mitchell report. I think that his name won’t be on there and the league can’t afford for it to be. It would be a huge PR blow to the league. We’re talking about a guy who is supposed to stay healthy and away from controversies and break the all-time home run record. As much controversy as Barry Bonds has stirred up, the league desperately would want Rodriguez to break the record and to stay away from any steroid cloud. That’s one reason why San Francisco isn’t a good fit for him. He needs to stay away from drawing any parallels to Bonds whatsoever.

  131. Jamie

    haha brandon your a joke

  132. Brian (Red Sox Fan)

Just a thought ….. Why woudn’t the Yankees move Jeter to third base? It would be less damaging to his ego now that he wouldn’t have to switch positions with ARod. He has an unusally big body for a SS, and as he ages, he becomes conspicuously more inadequate (range, arm, hands). Cal Ripken (another big body) did it. If Jeter agrees (or is told) to do it, the Yankees can look into free agent shortstops, where there might be more options. Do the Yankees really want Jeter to pay SS until he is 40?

P.S. He can’t play CF ….. absolutely no first (or second) step quickness. And he doesn’t have an outfielder’s arm.

  133. a passer by from Japan

Matsui does have a no-trade clause, but he has said that if a team wants to trade him, he doesn’t want to remain in the place he is not wanted, so he would waive the clause.

But still, I doubt that Cashman would trade him.

  134. Roger

    Chris

Since when did you work in the Yanks front office? Since never. The Yanks could ask Matsui if he’s open to a trade, he could and probably would say no. Matsui might be the type of guy who’d drop his no-trade clause if (he felt) he wasn’t wanted, he might not.

Horrible decisions by Cashman to give Giambi and Matsui no-trade clauses and Damon a limited no-trade clause.

  135. randy l

“so Cano to 3B and a new 2B is plausible in theory. Thoughts?”

i wouldn’t even think of doing it because cano is a good second baseman. he might not be a good third baseman for a while. why create a variable at two position when only one position is vacant and a variable right now.
i don’t think it’s a matter of being selfish. jeter wouldn’t like to switch to third either. posada wouldn’t want to switch to first. it doesn’t make them selfish because they want to keep playing where they have almost always played.
on the other hand ,it wouldn’t shock me at some point for girardi to have a private talk with jeter to feel him out on the subject of switching to third at some point. girardi has a contract for three years. jeter isn’t getting any younger.
so if anyone moves , i’d rather it be jeter.

  136. Miller

    Chris,

If what you say about Matsui is true than that just plain sucks. He is still decent enough to get something in return but has tured to complete DEAD WEIGHT. In this offense.

  137. kd

there’s one silver lining in all of this, we get to picks because alex took off. hopefully we can turn those picks into the next joba or phil hughes.

  138. Jeff NJ

The starting 3rd baseman for the NY Yankees in 2008 will be one Andy Phillips. Hopefully Suttle is ready to take over in 2009.

  139. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

Jamie, I know I am but that comparison made no sense.

    Tim Duncan is NBA
    Duncan fan favorite
    Duncan quiet rep.
Duncan in 2000 nearly signed w/ the Orlando Magic, the Spurs had to raise his market price

    Arod is MLB
    Arod fan target
Arod nowhere near a quiet rep.
Arod same story from Sea and now Ny

you want to compare Alex to an NBA athlete try Kobe Bryant or Kevin Garnett, using the Spurs most quitest player to dump dirt on Arod for opting out it’s a little pot shot like if you ask make

  140. jon

“My thought process for Miguel C. was Ian Kennedy, Tyler Clippard and Wilson Betemit.”

    Hahaahhahahhaha. sorry, I’m…sdoighoio…ugh…choking.

    Ok, better now.

My best guess for a package for Cabrera is Hughes or Joba, Alan Horne or Kennedy, and Melky. They’ll probably start by insisting on Hughes AND Joba.

Getting Cabrera is a horrible idea.

    1) his weight
    2) his salary (a bargain, but not ultra-cheap like the guys we’d be trading)
    3) he’s a free agent in 2010
    4) the cost in players

Find Betemit a suitable platoon partner (Ensberg, Helms, etc.), be happy with your $2M 800+ OPS, keep the young players and upgrade elsewhere.

  141. allo?

“That should show you right there they are ready to dump him. Matsui cannot be moved due to the revenue from Japan. Even though the guy can’t play left he is good for business.”

I never said they didn’t WANT to dump Giambi. I said they CAN’T because he has a full no-trade, refused to waive it last offseason, was injured all year and can’t play the field too often even when healthy. No one wants to take him, and he can refuse to go.

Matsui at least has value on the market, so that’s one hurdle down. Perhaps the revenue thing is true…I’ve heard it’s BS, but I don’t know for certain. IF they can convince him to leave, that’d probably be the best actual possible move for the team to make to clear up the OF/DH situation. Barring him making a successful move to 1b, which I don’t see happening.

  142. catya

Congrats to Joe G,let’s playball, and win win win!

I heard one of the best critiques of what Alex did this week, through his Slimey agent.

Lupica@ Daily Newa says “The only way Boras Could get Alex into a WS,was to announce it at the time Beantown(my word) was sweeping the Rockies.” “Whenever a player keeps saying it’s not about the money,it’s About the money!”

Jim Roam says,”To want to be the highest paid player in the game, you need to show up clutch, some of the time.Alex couldn’t be counted on to play clutch for the Yankees”
Roam also didn’t like that Alex’s ego was such, that he had to “Upstage the WS,to get some attention.”

PLEASE tell me that the Yankees aren’t getting Bonds,to replace Alex’s bat,Please let it be just that a rumor, please

  143. BBB

    Woo Hoo! Welcome Home Girardi!!!

on another note, why do so many people insist that Matsui has nothing left in the tank? Because he was in a slump at the end of the season so thats all you remember? He still put up very respectable numbers this year and I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t continue along the same trend next year. This “get rid of Matsui” stuff makes no sense to me at all. Are we really ready to just give up 25 homers and 100 RBI? I’m not. Trading him in a good deal is one thing but he is not useless guys!

  144. ND Yank

SJ44, you’re on fire lately and mostly dead on. But I don’t agree you that A-Rod and Mo are/were in similar situations. A-Rod was under contract with the Yanks, but did have an opt out clase and chose to do so. Mo is not under contract with the Yanks and is a FA, he filed yesterday. When A-Rod wouldn’t meet with the Yanks, it was when he was under contract and would’ve been about an extension. Now and only now that A-Rod is a FA is he in the same boat as Mo and I’m sure he’d like to meet with the Yanks and discuss $$ now, if not only to drive his price up. Hopefully the Yanks don’t change their tune and bite.

  145. nate c.

How is Matsui dead weight? He slumped at the wrong time of the year, bummer, but not dead weight.

Remember this guy has hit over 100 rbi’s every year with the yankees with the exception of 2006 when he was injured. we need his bat next year. end of story.

  146. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

And what’s w/ people wanting to put Jeter at 3B he has enough trouble on throws from SS to 1B now he goes to a farther wider range at 3B where the window for errors increase ?

  147. jon

“There is no I in team” – who do you propose plays 2B if Cano moves to 3rd?

A platoon at 3rd is the most cost-efficient move, and would likely outperform many of the players who make many times as much as Betemit + XXX combined.

    Buy low sell high.

  148. Scott

although, i have been a yankee fan for life, i have been more of a Don Mattingly fan…and i feel as though i have to speak up to the fact as to how classless they were to him…they brought him back to the organization to be the heir/successor to Torre and he was left out along the curb like garbage…from 1985 to 1995 he was the NY Yankees…

still, it is and was wrong…granted, Joe Girardi is a good choice, but he isn’t a Yankee…he wasn’t brought up through the system, he was just a product of a good run…so what, he did a good job in florida…big deal…

anyway…i am sitting here trying to decide as to whether, i even want to root for them anymore…they used to be the epitome of class, pride…but, now what they did is just wrong…totally classless…

  149. Tommy

Why would AROD in the Mitchell report be a disaster?
MLB seems to be doing fine in the wake of the steroid controversy.

Would hate to see IPK traded.
Just have a sneaky feeling he will be a more reliable long term MLB starter than one of JOBA/PHIL if not both.

  150. hmmm

how come for the Dodgers, Girardi was their first choice, and Torre was their second choice?

    interesting.

  151. SJ44

    Nate,

I did hear the interview. First time I have ever heard Boras backtrack on anything.

I like Scott Boras. I don’t get caught up in the “evil agent” nonsense. His job is to get the most money for his clients. Its not to appease fans or teams.

I do think he sometimes oversteps his ground. However, he goes as far as his clients allow him. Arod lets Boras run his life. That’s his choice.

Bernie? He told Boras what to do, not the other way around and that worked out well for both parties.

Its just different strokes for different folks.

I do think Boras is making a big mistake with Arod. I think he underestimated just how much the Yankees had tired of Arod’s nonsense. Did they want him back? Yes. Did they want to turn the franchise over to him? No.

Hopefully, the Yankees stand their ground here. You know Boras is going to make one more pass at the Yankees before telling Arod which team to he has to go to. When he does, the Yankees need to say “no”.

  152. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

nate c., I called this since 2006 he should have been traded for a Carl Crawford before his range gets anymore limited than it is right now. He’s in his mid 30’s and also got his knee drain how many ballplayers in any sport recover from this ?

  153. pat

    SJ
Throwing motion aside, taking Cano’s offense into account, does Cano have a higher arbitration value as a 2B or a 3B? I’m guessing 2B.

A-Rod/Mo comparison doesn’t work. Mo filed for free agency before the Yanks spoke with him. If he knew he had the meeting with Yanks today, why did he file yesterday? If Yanks want to speak with Boras and A-Rod after they filed, I’m sure they would be happy to speak with them today.

  154. hmmm

“i have to speak up to the fact as to how classless they were to him…they brought him back to the organization to be the heir/successor to Torre and he was left out along the curb like garbage”

    nonsense.

if he was such a great candidate why didn’t the Dodgers even interview him?

so the Dodgers had Girardi as their first choice, Torre second, and Mattingly not even on their radar…yet the Yankees should have hired Mattingly??

that to me tells me that his main qualifications for the job was the fact that he played for the Yankees. sorry, that’s not enough.

  155. J-Dawg

It would be a disaster because of the cloud that hovers over Bonds holding the all-time home run record. They wouldn’t want to go through the same thing if Rodriguez breaks the record and has a cloud over his head. They would have to deal with the same accusations of the record being tainted. It would make for a few more headaches that the league has already suffered with Bonds.

  156. Sara

I LIKE THE LINE UP YOU PEOPLE ARE POSTING BUT YOU HAVE BOTH MIGUEL CABRERA AND JOE CREEDE PLAYING 3RD!!!!

  157. B

“The starting 3rd baseman for the NY Yankees in 2008 will be one Andy Phillips. Hopefully Suttle is ready to take over in 2009.”

Funniest thing I’ve read all day. Thanks for the laugh.

  158. DM

This A-Rod thing is becoming comical.

For all of you who didn’t like A-Rod from the beginning and glad to see him leave…more power to you. But if you were one of the majority who constantly ripped the man…get over it.

If you were married to Carmen Electra for 4 years and treated her like crap, you can’t call her a fraud for walking out the door without telling you. You made your bed, now sleep in it.

  159. StandingO'Neill

Horrible decisions by Cashman to give Giambi and Matsui no-trade clauses and Damon a limited no-trade clause.

Giambi’s contract is basically a no trade clause. And nearly every player making over $10 mill has a no trade clause anyways

  160. ND Yank

Now Matsui is “dead weight”? Give me a break. He struggled in September and the playoffs because he had a bad knee. It was drained right before the ALDS, I was pretty sure he wasn’t going to do much against Cleveland. But he is not ‘dead weight”. He missed 20 games and still posted 25 HR’s 103 RBI’s and an OPS+ of 123, hardly “dead weight”. I think he came back nicely from the wrist injury and hit some absolute bombs last year.

    2003 109 OPS+
    2004 137 OPS+
    2005 130 OPS+
    2006 128 OPS+
    2007 123 OPS+

  161. hmmm

“nate c., I called this since 2006 he should have been traded for a Carl Crawford before his range gets anymore limited than it is right now. ”

yes, and Shelley Duncan should have been traded for Albert Pujols!!! stupid yankees.

seriously, on what planet would the Devil Rays trade the better, cheaper, faster, and younger Crawford for the older, slower, more expensive Matsui??

    priceless.

  162. SJ44

How were the Yankees “classless” to Mattingly?

They chose a guy they feel is best for the team right now.

I don’t see how that was “classless”.

The guy has never managed a single game in his life. Its awfully tough to have your first job be with the New York Yankees.

The last time they did that was with Lou Piniella. Piniella has said on numerous occasions that, while he was grateful for the shot, it was a mistake because he had no idea what he was doing and had to learn under the bright lights of NYC.

Its very tough to be a first time manager for the Yankees.

The Yankees gave Donnie a full interview and made a tough call. That’s not being “classless” in the slightest.

  163. hmmm

“Horrible decisions by Cashman to give Giambi and Matsui no-trade clauses and Damon a limited no-trade clause.”

Cashman did NOT negoitiate Giambi’s deal.

that was straight from the boss.

  164. J-Dawg

Sara- It might work because as big as Miguel Cabrera has become lately, it looks like there is somebody out there with him at 3rd base. They could use Crede to help roll Cabrera back to the dugout.

  165. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

J-Dawg, IDK how many people I’ve told the same thing to but here it goes one more time in the common sense world…..

Alex Rodriguez’s value is at it;s peak if his name were to be in the Mitchell report he’d be signing an extension as soon as possible because of the risk he loses value over the winter if his name were on it.

My guess his name is definitely not on the report because Boras has not only opted out, but hasn’t negotiated w/ anybody and Alex might be the rare slugger who’s name isn’t on that report driving the value higher than it already is in this winter’s offseason.

  166. This (Next) Year

SJ, I cannot believe you “like” Boras. How can someone like an agent who lies and cheats in the pursuit of dollar signs. Look at Drew last year. Clear case of illegal tampering. Ditto this year with Rodriguez. He would not have opted out without another deal in place. Compare him to Arn Tellem, or Cuza or even the Hendricks brothers. The guy is a totally unethical sc*mbag who puts his interests above his clients (unless he has a strong-willed client like Bernie). I agree it is ultimately Rodriguez’s choice, but Boras is as low as it comes.

  167. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

hmmm, at that time Matsui’s value was what 20 – 30 HR, 100 + RBI, noooooooooo they wouldn’t think of adding a legit # 4 bat for a leadoff man in thier lineup ;)

  168. randy l

    hmmm-

what are your thoughts on how many games having arod meant to the yankees over an average third baseman. i’m guessing 5-6 games.
as much as i liked having the best player in baseball in pinstripes, it’s not the end of the world losing 5-6 games because it can be made up elsewhere. my only concern is if arod goes to the red sox and the swing is 10-12 games. of course that would mean arod’s value over lowell instead of an average third baseman so it might only be a 8-10 game swing.

  169. nate c.

    SJ –
I agree, he will come calling and I hope the yankees stay away. Mike and Dog were talking about this yesterday. Something like, ‘the yankees could go on vacation and boras will still call them at the end. they are in play no matter what blah blah’

    Brandon –
Fair enough. I just don’t Matsui going anywhere. He and Giambi will have to battle for DH time, and potentially who can be more ‘dead weight’ as was previously mentioned.

  170. Sara

    J-Dawg..that is very true!!
Word on the radio is that the Yanks are talking with Miguel Tejada and swithing to 3rd. I think that would be a great great thing. Power hitting right hander and KILLS the Yankees!!!

  171. allo?

“hmmm, at that time Matsui’s value was what 20 – 30 HR, 100 + RBI, noooooooooo they wouldn’t think of adding a legit # 4 bat for a leadoff man in thier lineup”

You think the DRays were looking to trade their young, cheap, BETTER player (who hits third for them now) for Matsui? When their biggest problem has always been pitching?

Wow. You just have no idea what’s going on.

  172. This (Next) Year

Just made the mistake of turning on the tube. Before I could change the channel, there was a picture of the crowd chanting the usual chant. The TV reporter said, “Well, that’s the good old traditional chant”. Unbelievably classless. Guess it does not matter seven year-olds are there or are watching.

  173. Red Sox Fan

Is the Girardi hire official? I haven’t heard Girardi saying anything.

  174. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

Sara on what station ? I’m listening to the radio at work I haven’t heard any thing on Tejada other than Max Kellerman who wanted us to get Richie Sexson all season inquiring could the Yankees get him, I actually see Tejada going to LAA

  175. allo?

“I think that would be a great great thing.”

Getting Tejada would be terrible. He has an awful, awful attitude. He dogs it on the field all the time. And he thinks he’s better than Jeter. Do we really, really need to bring in another SS with ego problems?

  176. ND Yank

Mattingly was treated fairly. He interviewed for the job and they gave it somebody they thought was a better choice. He wouldn’t even say he was treated badly. I’m sure he was devastated he didn’t get his “dream job” just yet, but I don’t think he has any ill feelings towards the Yanks at all. I think he’ll be back at some point and I wish him nothing but luck. He’s pure class all the way. If Girardi wasn’t available, Mattingly would’ve been the guy. Just not his time yet.

  177. jennifer- Congrats Joe G

I agree SJ44. But that is as far as I can go with it. I got flammed last night because some thought I was picking on Donnie.

  178. ND Yank

You weren’t picking on Donnie, but you were taking pot shots at him with no basis.

  179. SJ44

I wouldn’t put Arn Tellem on the list of “ethical” agents. Arn has a few skeltons (as well as The Boss uttering a few curses words in his direction in Tampa a few years ago) in his closet when it comes to his deals.

Fernando and the Hendricks Brothers? No question, more ethical than Scott.

But, I ask you this….doesn’t it take two to tango when doing these deals? Most of baseball feels Scott had a deal with the Red Sox in place when he told Drew to opt out.

Most also feels he already has a landing spot for Arod.

So, if that’s the case, why is it only on Scott? Doesn’t the team bear some responsibility for breaking the rules?

A lot of people in the game feel the Dice-K bidding was completely rigged. So much so, the DRays made a lowball bid because they heard the Red Sox, Yankees and Mets were given info re: the bidding process. They felt that if that was true, and the Commissioner voided the deal, they would be in the catbird seat to land him on the cheap.

Its why I don’t get caught up in the ethical nature of agents. They are what they are.

    Pat,

The arbitration question is an interesting one. Given today’s compensation, third base is a higher compensated position than second base. There are certain financial ceilings with second base these days. Interestingly, when Soriano became a FA, one of the things he told teams was that he wanted to be considered an outfielder. Mainly, because the compensation was greater than being a second baseman.

On the Arod stuff, all he had to do is notify the Yankees he isn’t interested in a sitdown and say goodbye. Andy Pettitte did it when he left. So did John Wetteland.

To tell Jon Heyman before your employers? I don’t know, just seems to be slimy and unnecessary to me.

  180. migames

i think lowell stay, it would be arod replacing Lugo at SS, then you see that 10 game swing

  181. allo?

“I actually see Tejada going to LAA”

They’ve tried that deal several times and it’s fallen through. Not sure if that’s because he refused to play 3B or refuses to play 3B for the Angels, or the money wasn’t right or what.

  182. ND Yank

SJ? Who told Heyman before the Yanks? It was your man Boras.

Arod isn’t going to the Red Sox. No way.

There is no way they are bringing him into that clubhouse.

One thing the Red Sox have had the “pleasure” of seeing with Arod the last 4 years. He brings a lot of positives and quite a few negatives into any clubhouse. They have seen it firsthand and they aren’t investing 300+ million for that “privilage”.

Also, at close to 230 pounds now, he is too big to play SS.

He isn’t going to Boston and I would be shocked if the Red Sox let Mike Lowell get away.

  186. allo?

“Interestingly, when Soriano became a FA, one of the things he told teams was that he wanted to be considered an outfielder. Mainly, because the compensation was greater than being a second baseman.”

Really? My understanding of his refusal to move to the OF in the first place (before hitting free agency) was because his numbers were WAY above average for a 2B, so his value was higher at that position. They’re good for a corner OF, yes, but not mindboggling.

  187. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

inquiries from M&MD is not a good source

Carmen Electra doesn’t do it for me – she’s got no attitude.

  189. randy l

“SJ, I cannot believe you “likeâ€? Boras.”
i like him too. i like him because he sticks up for players with the owners. he has a lot of minor league players under contract. you would be surprised how many triple a guys who have excellent stats never get a chance. one thing that gives them a chance is if someone like boras gets them a top dollar bonus and contract from the beginning. they will then get a chance because of the contract.

i once threw two years of batting practice to number one draft pick(red sox) while he was hittng 28-29 hrs while stealing 20+ bases a year fo the devil rays at triple a and he never recieved a call up. he ended up going to japan.he had two kids and he was closer to 30 than 20. what’s he supposed to do? stay at triple a and have no future. if scott boras would have been his agent, i’n sure he would have had at least a chance with a big league team. there are players like carlos pena with the devil rays who are stuck in the minors and they just need a chance. agents like boras give them a shot.
there’s another side of the game that people don’t see. agents like boras at least help to balance the power that owners have.

  190. hmmm

    “hmmm-

what are your thoughts on how many games having arod meant to the yankees over an average third baseman. i’m guessing 5-6 games.”’

yup. i would agree with that assessment. A-Rod is about 5-6 wins.

but i think 5 wins is a LOT. it doesn’t sound like a lot, but it is.

  191. allo?

“THEY ARE TALKING TEJADA ON THE FAN. MIKE AND THE MAD DOG”

What are they saying? So much radio chat is speculation couched as information. You have to look at the words they use.

  192. SJ44

That’s how Soriano got 136 million dollars. There was no way any team was going to pay 8 years, 136 million for a second baseman.

His compensation was set as an OF on the free agent market, not as a second baseman.

  193. J-Dawg

SJ44- Plus he is absolutely HATED by the fans and that front office listens to their fanbase closely. He also didn’t improve relations when he made the announcement of his decision to opt out while they were winning the World Series. It would not make any sense to for him to overshadow something that his “future team” is accomplishing. I think that when A-Rod goes to Boston is the moment when pigs begin to fly.

  194. will

i’m sorta sick of switching players around. cano to third, damon to first, jeter to center. if we want a 3b, 1b, or whatever, get that position. let players play the position they’re comfortable with.

  195. pat

    SJ
I don’t know the answer but heard 2 people discussing the 2B/3B value.

I don’t completely understand the whole arbitration thing. Does it take other contracts of same position players into account? If it does, Cano’s numbers at 2B probably hold up a lot better across the league than his offensive #’s against the likes of A-Rod or Lowell to name just 2.

  196. This (Next) Year

Mike and the Mad Dog, while sometimes mildly entertaining are remarkably uninformed about baseball issues. It is bizarre that they never prepare beyond scanning the tabloids, and so
