I would like for the Yankees to go after Yunsel Escobar for third base. Hopefully, Rivera re-signs with the Yankees because we would be hardpressed to replace him at the moment.

"Cashman was cool with the no-trade clause for Giambi, too. Everyone blames Steinbrenner for Giambi, but hindsight’s 20-20: Giambi was in his prime upon joining the Yanks and had a very good 2002-03."

oh, he was "cool with it"? my bad. did he leave that on his MySpace page?

how do you know?

i have no problem criticizing Cashman for bad moves, but if you are going to claim that the power structure in the winter of 2002 was anything resembling what it is now, i will have to disagree.

it is pretty common knowledge that Steinbrenner demanded Giambi. he was so obsessed with Giambi that he allowed Giambi's agent to strike the specific steroids-related language from the contract.

and it's not hindsight for Giambi. common sense says you don't sign big, heavy sluggers on the wrong side of 30 to 7 year deals. and really, who were the yankees bidding against?

Also heard the reporter from the LA Times talk about how the Dodgers have a big need for a 3d baseman and he thinks McCourt will make a bona fide offer for ARod. He doesn't think he'll go to $30 million, but he's going to make a run at him.

Would it not be strange for Torre to be with ARod while Jeter remains here? Not that I think it will happen, but interesting to think about, no?

Randy 1

I was listening to XM in the car this afternoon and up in Boston, they interviewed someone (sorry, didn't catch who) who said "the way the Red Sox are made up now" they should be in great shape for a few years. He said they think they have the makings of a dynasty up in Boston _with this team._

I guess they're a little drunk with success right now, so you kind of have to take it with a grain of salt. However, as of today, they _are_ the team to beat, unfortunately.

Pat -

Thanks for that answer. Does that also mean that once they file for free agency any team can negotiate with them? Or does the original team still have those 15 days of exclusivity?

Brandon Wood is the heir apparent at SS, isn’t he not?? Orlando will be a FA after next season and he is one of the candidates (Aybar being the other) available to enable OC to walk.

The Angels certainly need Arod power and they need some protection to an increasingly aging and fragile Vlad.

Count on it,, Arod will be an Angel."

No, Brandon Wood was moved to 3rd base so Aybar could remain at short. Brandon Wood probably has as much power as AROD and he's 22 or 23 and he's cheap. The Angels are not going to sign AROD.

ND Yank

Where do the Yanks sign up for a .320 with 25 HR and 100 RBI from a 22-year old kid making

They don't have to sign up, they already have it. Did you not watch Cano the past few years? Do you not think he'll improve? Look at these numbers and respond then.

2005 .297 14 62 OPS .778
2006 .342 15 78 OPS .890
2007 .306 19 97 OPS .841

Players don't have to file for free agency. But they have 15 days after the WS to do it. The only team who can negotiate with them during those 15 days is the team they filed free agency from.
