i wonder what happens if joe takes a look at the dodger roster, and just decides it's time to hang it up...

do the dodgers offer mattingly a deal? is there anyone else in the mix?

Once again, Saint Joe's true colors come out. His "dignity" and "class" are and always were a front.

I wonder how Saint Joe would have felt if somebody was interviewing and negotiating to take HIS job away while he was still under contract.

You have to feel Grady Little, who probably is more of a man than Torre and won't make a public display by telling the world how HE was disrespected. a la Saint Joe during his circle jerk press conferences.

I thank the heavens for Joe Girardi.

Grady wasn't pushed out by the Dodgers. Grady Little left on his own and today wasn't his first mention of resigning. He talked about it before the season even ended. The timing of it was right as Torre was made available, even if Torre was the second choice after Girardi.
I find it interesting that Girardi is always the first choice of all teams when looking for a manager, yet we have Peter here putting a little doubt down about Girardi since last week. But the most talked about people always seem to get that treatment from Peter. Take it as you will. Great job otherwise.

Grady Little is a loser manager and good for the Dodgers that he left. Now they have a manager coming in who has no clue about the current National League. No idea who the players are on his team as well as the players on the other teams in the NL West. Most importantly, no 200million $$ payroll. This will certainly be very interesting to watch.
If ARod joins the Dodgers we certainly have the answer as to why Arod opted out and that reason would be Girardi as the new Yankees manager. Not that it wasn't obvious already with the timing of the announcement.

I am sick of hearing Boras comparing Arod to Posada and Rivera..saying Arod is a free agent same as them and the Yankees are dealing with THEM.. I wish some reporter would call him on this, Arod choose to opt-out..

Granpa Joe is going to have major problems in LA. Better stock up on Green Tea.

Torre exposed in 08!

I wonder how Joe sleeps knowing about how Grady Little was treated? Not very classy Joe.

Rebecca,

Don't feel sorry for Grady Little. He got out of town just in time.

That team is a mess. Younger players vs. older players in the locker room with Jeff Kent, (another Gary Sheffield-type in the locker room) stirring things up to no end.

Torre is inheriting a near-mutiny in the locker room and has a lot of young players on the roster. Something he wasn't always comfortable with in NY.

It also appears that there is disagreement between the owner and GM on who the manager should be. Ned Colletti (GM) wanted Girardi and thought he could finalize a deal with him. Frank McCourt (owner) wanted Torre.

That makes the Colletti-Torre relationship something worth observing in the next few months.

LA is a very tricky market. Torre is a big hire for them. However, lose the Freeway Series to the Angels and fall behind 6-8 games in the division by July and the honeymoon will be over.

The Dodgers have always been a team with no direction. If Torre can get everybody on the same page, they could have something going there. If not, it will get ugly.

Couple observations - Big post-season winners so far are the Dodgers and Rangers.

Listened to Boras on 1050 yesterday - he seems inappropriately concerned with ownerships' business holdings. The idea that A-Rod can demand a piece of a team's network is laughable! I remember Sheffield held-out on team pictures and TV taping last year because of his contract - this is what enables these guys to earn ridiculous sums of money. There's no way a team can afford a $200 Million payroll supported on attendance alone. As long as the team doesn't limit a player's endoresement opportunities - it's none of the player's business. I remember Jeter endorsing Discover card while the team had a deal with Visa and the League had one with MasterCard. There's a lot of money to be made and Boras has no business trying to get a piece of any team's action.

Finally, When did Don Mattingly become Joe Torre's favorite nephew? Don's comments during Torre's impasse were clumsy and cagey - and did not sound like anything I would call loyalty ("I don't want to get in the middle of anything" etc.... Why would Torre bring his personal Brutus across the country to sit next to him in LA?

mel--Yep, very, very true. Just pointing out that Pettitte was pretty darned young in '96! He's the only other one I can think of, though, unless you count Rivera who is SuperHumanProofed, anyway.
