Rivera meets with Yankees in Tampa

October
30

Lots going on (again) in Yankee land today.

Mo Rivera was in Tampa with his agent, Fern Cuza, to sit down with Brian Cashman and the Steinbrenners. Hey, a player willing to sit down with his team and hear what they have to say, what a concept.

When a player meets a team with his agent, it is usually a sign that a deal is close at hand.

Don Mattingly will do a conference call with the media at 4 p.m. The Yankees are having their call at 4:30 p.m.

The plan is to post audio from those calls later.

    I love Mo.

    CRAZY day(s) though!

  2. Andrew33

and theres my answer on Mo – thanks

  3. DMan

    What an exciting offseason..

I mean I think a lot of us expected it to take a couple weeks after the WS for things to get going but.. Wow.. Not quite.

  4. pat

“Hey, a player willing to sit down with his team and hear what they have to say, what a concept.”

A player files for free agency and then meets with a team to talk about a future contract. That’s not a concept that’s how the system is set up to work.

  5. artvandelay

    eh… I guess it’s for the best.
I’m a die hard yankee fan, but in some way, I want them to suffer a little bit, ya know?

LA dodgers get Torre as manager, Donnie as bench coach, maybe even Kevin Long as hitting coach, Lightning as pitching coach, Pena or Bowa also.. Rivera, Pettitte, not Posada since i’m pretty sure the Dodgers have a stud by the name of Russell Martin.
It’ll be like the Yankees of the West.

    What a dream.

  6. For the Love of the Yankees

This will be sweet. Mo will sign today. Posada tomorrow, Andy the next day,,,,then A-Fraud will be left looking like the FOOL that he is…..now that HIS closer and HIS Catcher and HIS starting pitcher have signed AND the Yankees have selected a Manager that was Manager of the Year his 1st year. Good Bye A-Fraud….thanks for all the clutch postseason hitting you gave us….career championships a big fat ZERO and destined to stay there FOREVER, Mr. Money Bags…..

  7. new girl

Think of the fans, Mo! And Steinbrats: Give the man what he wants – he deserves it, and WE deserve it.

  8. Gerry

i agree. who cares if his arm falls off. Mo deserves anything he wants. hes a lifer!

  9. jay destro

    Sign on the line Mo!

  10. Yankees Chick

news of a new contract with mo would be nice… bring a little calm and familiarity back to the yankees universe after a crazy week!!!

  11. pat

I think Mo might make them twist a little bit before eventually agreeing to come back.

  12. Global Warming

    Check this out.

*Paul O’Neill told 1050 ESPN New York’s Andrew Marchand he “wouldn’t rule out” joining Girardi’s coaching staff. O’Neill said he and Girardi are longtime friends and they spoke a lot during the season; both worked for YES, the Yankees’ television network.

“I will probably talk with him at some point [about a coaching position],” O’Neill said.

O’Neill said he will wait to call Girardi, because he doesn’t want to be a nuisance during Girardi’s decision-making process.*

    How great would that be?

    hahaha, i agree!

  14. Jake

    artvandelay ,

what are you babbling about? Torre and Donnie might go to LA and with good reason, but what makes you think Rivera and of all people PETTITTE would EVER wind up in LA? Maybe Rivera…maybe, but Pettite?!? Are you out of your mind?

  15. DMan

    Global Warming-

Yah that would be pretty great. Hes a smart baseball guy.

  16. Drive 4-5

What would be sweeter than to sign Mo and Posada then have Andy announce he’s coming back all within AFraud’s 10 day window??? I know it’s a longshot, but PLEASE let this happen!

  17. CYF

Yeah, artvandelay, you sound like a real Yankee fan.

  18. GUY

    Pat
    Peter was being sarcastic

  19. J-Dawg

Mo coming through for the Yankees and the fans again. Imagine that. He’s a great player and sounds like an even better person. Just a class act and a wonderful representative of the pinstripes.

  20. Bob from NJ

The Dodgers don’t need Mo, they have Saito and Broxton.

  21. new girl

THANK you for the Paul O’Neill story. Things are slowly starting to look up…

  22. Jake

    Global,

That would be AWESOME!!! Bring some fire and warrior mentality back to the bronx. No offense to Torre (love everything he did in NY) or anything, but sometimes, SOMETIMES, I swear to God I thought he died sitting on the bench. So sleepy.

  23. mel

Schill the Scribe wrote letters to his teammates saying goodbye. Here’s a quote from espn.com about Lowell, “I was actually very surprised that Michael didn’t buy his own jet right after the sixth inning when A-Rod announced it and fly home on his own. Because all I heard was cha-ching, right after I heard A-Rod opted out,” Schilling joked.

  24. hmmm

yes, let’s all become Dodger fans b/c they hired Torre!!!

    that makes sense.

of course, their first choice was Girardi, so what does that tell you?

  25. J-Dawg

The day that Pettitte becomes an L.A. Dodger is the day that Randy Johnson comes back to the Yankees.

  26. pat

    Guy
    So was I.

  27. raymagnetic

Rivera will not be going to LA. The Dodgers have Saito and Broxton they aren’t paying Mo 12 mil per to not close.

  28. GUY

    my fault pat

  29. Gayle

Something I just realized both Cano and Wang are arbitration eligible this year as they only signed one year deals. Can someone explain how this process works. Will the Yankees offer them a deal in order to avoid arbitration? What are the deadlines for this. I cant imagine that Yankees want to go through that process. Maybe some of the Torre and Arod money will go to them lol

  30. Matty R

Why would Mo or Po end up in LA? That makes no sense, unless somebody is willing to let Po know he is no longer a catcher, but a firstbase man. And then, somebody can let Mo know he isn’t a closer, or a setup man, but the 7th inning guy. Yes, that works perfectly for both of them.

  31. Doreen

If the Yankees sign Mariano, that would indeed do a lot to calm a lot of people (me included). It would bring some normalcy to this very unfamiliar feeling of disarray.

  32. Drive 4-5

How great would it be if Paul O’Neil were to become a coach this year with Girardi? If there’s a polar opposite of Alex Rodriguez, it’s Paul O’Neil. The man has more guts and desire to win in his left pinkie than AFraud has in his entire body.

  33. migames

    hmmmmmm

torre is gone, let it go man. Stop the Bash

  34. S.o.S.27

How about getting Cabrera from the Marlins for Kennedy and Cabrera. Having Cabrera play firstbase(with his wieght issues in question). Get Beltre from the Mariners for Damon or Matsui(one has to go if Giambi stays). If im not mistaken their contract are almost even. Sign Rowand to take over Centerfield. We fill up all of our holes and make up for the lost right handed power.

    thoughts?

  35. Jake

OK, enough of the Po/Mo/Pettitte to the Dodgers jibberish. Let’s let these 10 days pan out, see what happens with them, and go from there.

I wonder what Cashman is scheming on behind closed doors. Any predictions for the right handed bat? 3B? SP? Bullpen?

I heard rumors about them shifting Cano to 3B and finding a new 2B…doesn’t make too much sense, but is an option all the same.

What are all of you hoping for this Xmas?

  36. S.o.S.27

Is a 3 year deal to much to give Mo? I say give him 2 years with a team option for a third.

Is 4 too much for Posada?

  37. Global Warming

“How about getting Cabrera from the Marlins for Kennedy and Cabrera”

    S.oS,

No way those 2 alone get it done.

  38. Ryan

Did I hear on ESPN that Girardi was Pettitte’s personal catcher? If that’s true, then that type of relationship only has to help Andy want to come back next year.

  39. Evan

I’m really glad that Mattingly is at least willing to do a media call with the Yankees. I hope it shows that he’s not angry with the club and would consider being a part of the organization in the future.

The thought of Torre and Mattingly in Dodger blue is something that will take a lot of getting used to, but if it helps Mattingly get more experience so he can manage the Yankees in the future, I think it’ll be worth it.

  40. S.o.S.27

If Cano goes to third, why not have Loretta as a short term solution at second. He’ll come cheap has a great glove and grinds out every at bat.

  41. nate c.

“The Yankees are expected to offer Rivera a three-year deal worth approximately $40 million.” – Mark Feinsand

    I’m ok with that deal.

  42. Jake

    SoS,

I can dig what you are scheming, but it seems like that would require too much $ spent on FAs as opposed to trying to swing some trades for youngsters. Then again, we have a TON of money to play with, so who knows.

It all depends on what you have to give up for Cabrera…i was all for this mid-season, but who knows. Not a bad idea. Not sure about letting Kennedy go…looked promising. Then you have to consider what Pettitte does.

If I am going to ship Cabrera anywhere, I am going to try to package him with Wang and go after Johann Santana (as unrealistic as it might be).

  43. jennifer- Congrats Joe G

bolt down the water coolers!! I’M sooo happy Paulie might come back!!! I miss seeing number 21 on the field.

  44. Jeter's Future Wife

do you think this is all a coincidence that Mo is in Tampa with his agent the day (or day and a half) after AROD announces his “departure”? Paaalllllease, that shows you right there that the other players didn’t particularly care for AROD the man, I’m sure they loved the player and his abilty, but really – Mo is probably like, “oh there is a God, AROD is opting out, now I will go and work out a deal, b/c this is the only team I know and I want to retire here and have a monument in Monument Park”.

  45. Jeter's Future Wife

so we lose Donnie Baseball and Gator, but gain Girardi and possibly Paully? I’ll take that trade off!

  46. Global Warming

The Posada contract most definitely scares me but with the no immediate replacement at catcher, the Yankees really have no choice.

4 year deal, he’ll be 40 on the contracts last leg. By that time though he’ll have to be a DH, heck I’d guess he’ll become a DH halfthrough 2009 the latest.

Mariano on the otherhand I’m not too worried about with a 3 year deal, he’s a freak of nature and his motion is pretty easy going. He could probably pitch until he’s 45.

  47. S.o.S.27

Offcoarse thats assuming we cant get the Wang,Cabrera and Kennedy deal dont. The Marlins would get a starting pitcher and a starting centerfielder which if im not mistaken havnt been happy with who they currently have. As far as money spent, all we would be buying in Rowand. The others are under contract.

  48. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    SoS:

I love Po and Mo with every fiber of my being, but I’d be wary of anything more than three year deals at this point.

And Paulie coming back to the Yankees would be like reaching Nirvana.

SAYS GERARDI HAS ALREADY COMPRISED A LIST OF COACHES HE WANTS TO RETAIN FROM TORRW’S STAFF.

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/10302007/sports/yankees/joe_girardi_takes_yankees_3_ye.htm

  50. Drive 4-5

FINALLY something positive to talk about!!! Best of luck to Joe and maybe Donnie Baseball in LA. We love you and you will be Yankees forever.

  51. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

“the Yankees and Girardi moved swiftly to keep hitting coach Kevin Long, who is expected to sign a rare three-year deal for close to $1 million. The Yankees are also keen on retaining field coordinator Rob Thomson as Girardi’s third base or bench coach. Tony Pena, who interviewed for the job Girardi was offered yesterday, also will remain.”

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS !!!!!!!!!!!!! ok people I’m out of here see you later :D

  52. S.o.S.27

If the Angels get Arod then Figgins would be available. If Cubs get fraud then Ramirez is. If I had my choice I would try for Figgy. He seemed to kill us everytime we play them.

  53. Steve Howe You Doin

If we keep Kevin Long, what coaching position would O’Neill fit?

I see as follows, so far…:

    Pena (1B)
    Long (H)
    Bowa (3B)
    Eiland (P/Bullpen)

Would O’Neill make a good bench coach, or base coach?

  54. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop, and David Ortiz stole my cheeseburger (aka Joe)

Good news about Girardi (a little sad for Donnie, though).

I would try to get a right handed power hitting first baseman, and have Betemit play 3rd.

  55. Jaewon

This is good stuff. But I don’t think any of that coach stuff is official. Pena, Bowa, and Long are not definites to come back.

  56. Jeter's Future Wife

you have to give Jorge the 4 years. SO what if he is done the last year, if he gives you a solid 3, then you are getting your money’s worth. Posada is a student of the game who will for sure manage one day as well. He is an asset to the clubhouse I hear and obviously would have plenty to offer the last year of his contract to the new catcher that is here by then in a mentoring fashion. And he wouldnt have a single problem with it. get the deal done, it’s worth it! now, if we could only get Jorge to hit in the postseason too, I’d be beside myself!

  57. Andrew33

how about wang and cabrera for miguel cabrera and move him to first
look to get crede as hes supposedly expendable in chicago
and sign rowland to play center

pipe dreams i’m sure, i like wang as well as everyone but i’d rather not give up any of the 3 young guys and i’m sure florida would want a proven starter for cabrera – and in a big ballpark wang probably does real well

  58. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Already, not even two days past what some might call the lowest depths of misery for yankees’ fans, the future looks exceedingly bright.

  59. Mike R.

    Steve:

You need to move Either Pena or Bowa to the Bench and put Paul at 1st.

  60. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

Steve Howe You Doin, Tony Pena belongs at the bench coach position not wasted at first base

  61. Brendon

Steve, I think that the Yankees coaching should look like this:

    Bench: Bowa
    Hitting: Long
    Pitching: Eiland
    3B: Pena
    1B: O’Neil
    Bullpen: Kerrigan

  62. SJ44

Forget the Cubs for Arod. They don’t have an owner yet and that won’t be finalized until the spring.

The leading candidate to take over the Cubs, John Canning, is Bud Selig’s best friend.

‘Ya think he is going to approve a 300+ million dollar deal, which goes against EVERYTHING Bud wants in the game? No chance.

That’s the problem when members of the media throw out teams for Arod. They just write nonsense, with no thought going into these stories.

I’m all for discussing Arod’s next destination. It would be nice though if some thought went into these stories.

There are logical destinations for Arod and illogical destinations. A little homework by members of the media would make these discussions a little more intelligent going forward.

  63. DMan

I see a lot of people tossing up names like Hughes, Wang, Kennedy, Melky, Joba, etc for trades to fill in third and first base..

Its just not going to happen. The days of the Yankees trading guys like that for a couple year stop gap player are gone..

I think the Yankees would rather take their chances on 2008 and focus the big moves for 2009 when all those players come off the books (Giambi, Pavano, Moose, etc)

  64. pat

    Jeter’s future wife

Or maybe Mo told A-Rod I’m meeting with Cashman Tuesday but I’m not signing anything.

As for players not caring, Damon and Cano’s coments in the paper today didn’t give me that impression.

  65. Jake

Ya, we have options…I just am not sure that breaking the bank for a guy like Cabrera is worth it. He is talented, sure, but he is lazy and his committment is half-a$$. Maybe that would change for a contender, I don’t know.

Rowand might work nicely…not a bad idea. Do you think he is cheaper than Hunter? If not, I go with Hunter. Whoever is cheaper.

Tie up Cano to a long-term contract, give Posada 4 for 40 with plans to find a new catcher for 2009 or 2010, and shift Posada to DH/1B for the life of his contract.

I’d field offers for Damon or Matsui, but this might be risky for fear of depleting our lineup power.

Who is down to plug Cano in to the 5 hole this year?

  66. Mike R.

    Brendon:

I like your set up, except I’d prefer to move Eiland to the Pen and bring in Mazzone as Pitching coach. If not It might be Eiland as pitching coach and a Girardi guy in the pen, but I think Kerrigan is gone.

  67. Mike R.

    Jake:

I would trust Joe G. if he gave the green light to go for Cabrera.

  68. SJ44

Kerrigan is gone. He won’t be back.

Mike Harkey will be on this staff in some capacity. He did a great job working with the young pitchers with Girardi in FL and I think he either ends up being the bullpen coach or pitching coach.

I doubt Bowa returns. That probably puts Pena (whom I think will be back) at third base.

Bench coach? I would love to see Gary Tuck get it but, I don’t know how his deal is set up with the Red Sox. He may not be available.

I’d LOVE to see O’Neill on the staff. However, until I see O’Neill give up the cushy life he has right now for being a coach (NOT an easy gig), I’m not ready to believe the stories.

I heard Kevin Long is coming back, which is good news.

  69. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Pat: what comments are you talking about?

I haven’t seen the papers today!

  70. SJ44

Donnie’s conference call was just on 1050. Donnie said all the right things.

Donnie also said he was never promised anything from George about being the Yankee manager when he came back.

All in all, while he sounded disappointed (understandably so) he didn’t sound bitter at all at the Yankees.

    He is a class act.

  71. migames

is oniell going to bat 4th for the yankees, if not, who cares?

I love the guy, but does a 1st base coach really have any impact on the game?

  72. Brendon

Mike, I was sort of staying in the organization, if we were looking out of the organization, i 100% completley agree with you, I think Mazzone is the man, i just hope he can keep up with the young pitching.

  73. Andrew33

if they think cabrera kicks it into high gear playing in NY i’d make the trade i mentioned – they would know better then me and i would think rowland is much cheaper then hunter – i am against trading any of those 3 young guys

maybe they stand pat and do nothing for next year, i’m fine with that, but a few moves and they actually might be right back in the playoffs next year and this is without mortgaging the future

  74. Jeff

    We love you Donnie!

    Joltin Joe Girardi-o!

  75. murphydog

By not offering the manager’s job to Mattingly and by getting rid of Torre and Gator, the new management is saying that there will be no more jobs awarded on the basis that the person is a fan favorite or a “true Yankee.” Coaches will have to be able to coach to get a job.

I loved Paulie the player, but he’s not a coach for grown men. He’d be just like his tor-mentor, Lou Piniella, grimacing and groaning and throwing things in the dugout over strikeouts, errors and brain cramps. Paulie, however, has no coaching experience or credibility at the MLB level and certainly no success as a coach like Lou. Explosive bench coaches are an especially bad thing when the manager is not prone to such outbursts. My belief is that Joe G., while intense and attentive, is not overly demonstrative. His bench coach can’t be losing it and become a distraction while Joe G. is trying to remain cool and focused.

Maybe a Spring Training gig would be OK for Paul.

  76. Mike R.

    SJ:

I’m asking because I respect your opinion. Why do you think Tuck would be a good candidate for bench coach? The jump from bullpen to bench seems huge.

Also I think that Bowa has a real shot at staying even if it is at 3rd base.

  77. S.o.S.27

I just am not sure that breaking the bank for a guy like Cabrera is worth it.

    Jake,
Cabrera is not a free agent. Damon made it loud and clear that he wasnt happy with the lack of playing time on the field and that he would welcome possible trade destinations. So he either is told that left field is his meaning either Giambi or Matsui is traded or benched or he’s gone. Unless he is singing a different tune. I also read today his comments on arod leaving, he didnt seem to happy or confiedent. Who knows if that has anything to do with his sweet heart team winning it all without him.

I like the idea of Posada at dh and first after this up comming season. Hopefully that keeps him fresh and his bat quick.

Cano started showing more patience at the plate late in the season. Hopefully it continues and he therefore gets better pitches to hit. Scary thought.

  78. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

Bench: Pena (the latino Don Zimmer)
Hitting: Long (1 million for 3yrs.)
    Pitching: Ferrell or Leo
    3B: Bowa
    1B: O’Neil
    Bullpen: Eiland (ehhh)

  79. murphydog

And of course I could be completely mistaken about Paulie.

Love the thought of O’Neill, but I start to wonder if the lunatics will be running the asylum. Girardi, O’Neill and Bowa (if he stays) are all intense guys, to say the least.

I’m not sure if combination of hyper-intense coaches and inexperience (Girardi, O’Neill, Kevin Long, Dave Eiland, Rob Thomson) is a breath of fresh air or a nightmare waiting to happen. All the more reason to hold on to Pena.

  83. Drive 4-5

In case you dont know it..Donnie Baseball’s conference call is on WFAN. Nothing but class!!

He just said “it’s not like I’m about to start rooting for the Red Sox” hahahahaha We love you Donnie!

  84. Mike R.

Awesome Brandon. That is my dream staff right there.

  85. torrey

Rob Thompson, the field coordinator is mentioned as a possible bench coach. Tell me, what exactly does a field coordinator do?

  86. Jake

    DMan,

Good point. Might make sense to wait it out. The only person I would entertain making the big trade for would be Johann Santana. Try to trade for with the agreement to sign an extension.

Then, go after Jake Peavy in Free Agency before 2009. At this point, our rotation would include Johann, Peavy, Hughes, Chamberlain, and someone else. Gotta figure you’d have to send Wang, Kennedy, and someone else for Johann, right?

I know, probably also a pipe dream, but the 2009 FA class will be AWESOME.

Wasn’t Tuck Joe G’s bench coach in Florida?

  88. Jay Yankees

Hey,how ‘bout Paulie (Paul O’neill) as HITTING COACH? eh?
now that would make me very happy…and perhaps this would help the Yankee hitters not to swing at the first pitch when they have a pitcher on the ropes a la Cleveland series!!

  89. Jake

    SoS,

When I said break the bank, I was referring to the bank of youngsters we have, not our pocket book.

I know Cabrera isn’t an FA, this being the primary reason I wouldn’t go after him.

  90. Steve Howe You Doin

At some point, Jeter’s not going to have enough range to stay at short. Ripken made the move, I see Jeter having to do it as well.

Moving Jeter to third now, with Alberto at SS gives us a better middle infield, defensively. Alberto’s supposed to be a stud with the glove. Could he be worse offensively than Lugo?

  91. Jake

I should say this…we probably shouldn’t get our hopes up for Johann. If he is made available, every high market team will be willing to give up just as much as NYY.

It would be a tough buy unless we have something the Twins absolutely cannot turn down…not sure Wang, Kennedy, or Cabrera are that.

  92. J-Dawg

Stephen- I actually like the idea of having a staff who is hyper and fully intense. It would definitely be a change from Torre and company (other than Bowa of course). Any team has to be willing to adapt and to change their culture. Baseball is not the place to have a front office who is inflexible and suffering from OCD. It definitely looks like the Yankees are changing the course by hiring an intense manager.

  93. Drive 4-5

I’d love to see the Yanks use Brandon’s coaching staff.

  94. mel

    Torrey,

When Girardi was Torre’s bench coach, he took extensive notes and compiled them for Torre to use. At some point this became Rob Thomson’s job, and I believe Torre thanked him during his initial press conference after refusing the deal. Seems like he’s a gem.

I can’t believe they’re offering pennies for Kevin Long’s services. $1M for 3 years? Torre had it good. I’m also a little disappointed that Girardi won’t be the highest paid manager. But that’s a good thing I guess. Sends a message that the Yankees aren’t made of money. HaHa.

  95. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Pat: Thanks much!

  96. Mike R.

I would take Damon’s comments with a grain of salt. Damon is a Boras client and they are known to stick together. There is a history of Boras clients talking each other up.

  97. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

WE’RE NOT TRADING OUR PROSPECTS GIVE A DAMN REST ALREADY W/ JOHAN AND CABRERA, THEY ARE BOTH FA IN 2009 AND WE WILL FREE UP 89 MILLION BY THAT YR. !!!

Call me crazy, but if I’m the Yankees I am definitely not trading Wang for Santana. I am also not trading Hughes or Joba for Santana either. I would be willing to trade IPK/Melky and Horne or whoever else for Santana however.

With Jackson and Tabata in the wings possibly as early as 2009 I think Melky is expendable.

A rotation of Santana/Wang/Pettite/Hughes/Moose with Joba in the pen for 2+ innings a few times a week is much better and will probably take you further than Santana/Pettitte/Joba/Hughes/Moose with no viable shutdown 7th/8th inning pitchers.

What I will definitely not do if I’m the Yankees is trade Hughes/Joba/IPK or Melky for Miguel Cabrera. The tradeoff is not worth it.

But I’m not the Yankees so it doesn’t matter what I’d do.

  99. SJ44

    Mike,

IIRC, he was the bench coach in Florida with Joe. Gary Tuck is one of the best coaches in baseball. Frankly, the Yankees screwed him over when they let him go. He did a great job with Posada and is one of those guys who can really dissect hitters/utilize scouting reports.

He has a great baseball mind that the organization foolishly let get away. If they can get him back, it would be a plus for the organization.

  100. hmmm

“Donnie also said he was never promised anything from George about being the Yankee manager when he came back.”

wait, everyone here told me the yankees were classless for not giving him the job he was promised.

  101. fleas

Girardi, my god. how exciting!!! NOT

I’m telling you, these Yankee’s need major help with this circus.

    disgusted.

Arod is not smart, he really believed the Yankee’s would negotiate with him even if opted out. Boras is the one with all the meddling that made it so ugly. Arod deserved to opt-out. It was in his contract. The Yankee’s knew it.

IMAGE. If arod opted out on any other team, and the Yankee’s had a spot a third, they would write a mammoth deal to obtain him….. Yankee’s pride and ego are really a great way to run a business.

Sop being sheep and start thinking for yourselves. Don’t bite on every word the media tells you! Probably believe that what Bush tells you too. I’ll refrain from an expletive.

  102. sunny615

The key to any Santana deal is extension.

    No extension. No deal.

If the yankees can work a deal and agree to an extension with Santana, I’d say do it. If not, then pay the money later. If you can get the best pitcher in baseball a year early and keep other teams out of it (like the Sox), then why not?

  103. Johan

    Brandon,
Are u cashman? Guess not huh? so u give me a rest and let everyone post their own opinions.

    “I can’t believe they’re offering pennies for Kevin Long’s services. $1M for 3 years? ”

how much do other hitting instructors make?

i think a 3 year committment is a pretty big deal for a hitting instructor.

  105. Johan

THEY ARE BOTH FA IN 2009 AND WE WILL FREE UP 89 MILLION BY THAT YR. !!!

Well wait till there then big smart ass to see if they’ll be FA. You dont know shi.. about negotiation.

  106. Mike R.

Great info. Thank SJ. I had heard that the two names Girardi brought up were Harkey and Tuck, but I didn’t have any information on them other than their experience. I knew what they did, but I didn’t knowe what kind of talent they have.

Any info on Harkey? I know he has been a pitching coach in the Padres system and he was the BP coach in Florida, but that’s it. It seems like a buddy hire to me.

  107. Enoch

    ray,

good thing it doesnt matter because youre a retard.

  109. sunny615

IMO, a Wang is worth a Santana. A Wang and Melky is also worth a Satana. Santana has out pitches that Wang doesn’t. It’s not a criticism, but truth. When Wang’s sinker wasn’t sinking, how hard has he been hit? If Santana has problems, he has other go to pitches. Let me put it this way, if we had Santana instead of Wang this year, the Yankees’ year would never have ended in the ALDS.

  110. Mike R.

    hmmmm

Agreed. In the words of Joe Torre. That’s alot of glue for a hitting instructor. Especially one that has only been with the MLB club one year. It really speaks volumes to his talent.

  111. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

Johan, because you miss the fact reguardless what happens you have to spend $$$ on Johan.

Case 1: you trade future allstars for Johan Santana and most likely he’s not signing longterm until he hits FA

Case 2: You keep your prospects & sign Santana thee following yr.

    Think man.

  112. jon

Alberto Gonzalez can hit .250 with no power. You can’t replace ARod’s bat with his. Not an option.

You replace ARod with a ~800 OPS from 3B (hopefully with a platoon of Betemit and an Ensberg type), and you’ve lost about 5 wins (from ARod’s 2007). However, the chances of ARod duplicating 2007 are low, so in reality that difference is probably more like 3 wins.

The improved pitching staff can surely make that up. But we do need to sign Posada, and we will overpay.

  113. Miller

    fleas,

you are like, so, enlightened, man.

  114. .i.

boy oh boy did espn flub up the girardi conference.

  115. raymagnetic

I’m a retard because to you it makes sense to trade 3+ years of arbitration eligible Wang for 1 year of Santana which will basically only get you 1 or 2 more wins?

The difference between Wang and Santana is not as great as you might imagine. Financially trading Wang for Santana just doesn’t make a lot of sense. But hey what do I know, I’m a retard.

  116. Jeter's Future Wife

    Pat,

I do think that the former teammates of AROD liked him, the player, however, not so sure they like him as a man now. Yes, taking him out of the lineup will put more pressure on the rest to produce, god for bid!

Cano’s comments were, well, I will miss him, but life goes on and the Yankees go on.
I don’t see any love lost with those comments.

and Damon had to say something along those lines, b/c his agent is Boras too. You don’t hear Jeter speaking out about how much he’ll miss AROD or Abreu, hmmmm….not even a peep!

  117. Laura

Why is everyone so ready to dump Melky? The guy has a tremendous arm. Didn’t he have like 16 assists? Yes, he didn’t hit all that great, but come on. We can’t trade Melky. I love that kid!!! We can’t take away all of Robbie’s friends.

About Jeter moving to 3B, won’t happen this year. He’ll resist. I actually think he’d be better in the outfield.

  118. Jake

    Sunny,

I agree…extension is the key. If that is not part of it, makes no sense not to wait until he hits the market.

    Brandon,

We’re not talking about trading away all the prospects, so cool off. One prospect to reel in the best starter in baseball is not a tall order.

This is the offseason my friend, you better readjust yourself and come to terms with the fact that some like to entertain themselves with trade/signing conjectures. That is what the offseason Hot Stove is all about.

  119. Johan

If Santana come on a trade to the yankees, is not hard to sign an extension, he’s not leaving the twins to play 1 year for a team. Further he said, he will only leave minessota for WS contender.

Santana’s pursue must be the highest priority after signing mariano, posada and pettitte back.

  120. Brendon

I would not trade Melky yet, I think Tabata is the future of the Yankees but Tabata can’t even drink beer yet.

He’s 19, few more years for Tabata I think.

  121. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Girardi on ESPN2 now. showing a lot of class.

  122. Jeter's Future Wife

According to Olney, one person Girardi would want on his staff would be former Cubs pitcher Mike Harkey, perhaps as pitching coach.

    from ESPN.com

  123. SJ44

Hitting coaches, and coaches in general, don’t make a lot of money. They rarely get 3 year deals.

A 3 year deal to a coach is like gold. They are usually year to year guys that make around 200-400K per year, depending on experience.

Some guys, like Rick Peterson and Rudy Jaramillo, make much more money. By and large though, its not a high paying gig.

For only one year in the bigs, that’s a great deal for Long and he deserves it. He did an excellent job last year and the players really respect his work ethic.

Its nice to see the Yankees reward him.

Re: Mike Harkey, I know Dontrelle Willis swears by him. He did a great job smoothing out Dontrelle’s delivery and got the most out of him. Last year, without Harkey, Dontrelle was a mess mechanically and had a bad year.

The young Marlins pitchers all loved working with Harkey and Rich Kranitz, who was the pitching coach (now with the Orioles). Willis, though, was the most vocal guy in support of Harkey.

  124. RyanM

you sounded great on the conference call peter!!! hehe

  125. Jake

    Brandon, you are wrong.

Why get wrangled in to a bidding war for the best pitcher in the game when you can cut loose an expendable prospect IF he is willing to sign the extension. I’m sorry, but when it comes to Johann Santana, IPK is expendable, as is Wang and Cabrera. Just my opinion, I am sure many of you will disagree.

  126. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

Why can’t you have Johan Santana next season w/o selling your farm ?

  127. sunny615

Key point for any Santana trade:

    NO EXTENSION. NO TRADE.

  128. mel

    Pete’s on now. Great question.

  129. Jake

We can always take our chances with Free Agency too, don’t get me wrong. There will be other starters that are hypothetically available (pending any signed extensions). We can let Johan go by the wayside, but the thought of him pitching for Boston makes me sick. And don’t doubt for a second that Boston will be right in the middle of it to complement Beckett. COUNT ON IT.

Why can’t you have Johan Santana next season w/o selling your farm ?_

Because – if you have the opportunity to get Santana before the open market and fighting off other high money teams like the Red Sox and Cubs, for the best pitcher in baseball and sign him to a long term deal you do it.

  131. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

Girardi saids “John Wooden my as*” :D

  132. Laura

I think that a lot of the guys just sat back, waiting for A-Fraud to do something. Now with him gone, they will have to pony up and get the job done themselves. A-Phony’s departure could be the best thing that ever happened to us.

I also think that Girardi is going to be more of a “manufacturing runs” kind of manager. We’re going to see a lot more hit and runs and bunts. I can’t wait!!

Can you imagine if, by some miracle, we happened to win the WS next year, w/o his lying, sorry a**? That would be the highlight of this decade.

  133. SJ44

There won’t be a trade for Santana without an extension signed. It won’t be a one year rental.

If you can trade Wang and get Santana, along with an extension, you do it. A no brainer. The guy is the best or second best pitcher in the game. He’s only 28 and there is no wear and tear on his arm because he is a fastball/change up guy.

If its there, you gotta do that deal.

  134. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

    ugghhh .. I can’t stand Suzyn Waldman

  135. Jake

    Brandon,

Hypothetically, you can IF IF IF you win the bidding war. The price will be driven up if and when he its free agency. That’s the point.

As Sunny said: “NO EXTENSION. NO TRADE.”

  136. Brendon

The only way I would trade for Santana is the contract extension and the Yankees need to sign Rowand for 2-3 years to fill in for melky while tabata learns more.

To trade for Santana w/ Contract Extension

    Yankees trade:
    IPK
    Horne
Melky (or tabata) what ever they want

if Melky is wanted, sign rowand.

  137. beavis

what’s girardi saying??? at work and can’t listen

  138. Brendon

    WWSJ44D: “What Would SJ44 Do?

and IPK is not the farm. Wang and Melky are inexpensive young talent, but they’re not farm hands anymore. IPK is a great pitcher and there’s a reason he’s a #1 pick, but at the moment, that’s all he is. A prospect with high potential who slots as a 2 or 3 starter. Santana is an ace. Wang is a darn good pitcher but lacks an out pitch. Without his sinker, Wang is batting practice (as evidenced in the ALDS). His only plus pitch is his sinker. Santana, I believe, has 3 or 4. I love Wang, but if we had Santana instead of Wang in games 1 and 4, we’re past the ALDS. IPK has a lot of potential, but that’s all it is right now – potential. Santana is a proven commodity in the hard AL and won several Cy Youngs. You make that kind of deal if Santana is willing to sign an extension.

  141. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08')

    SJ44, I agree

Brendon (w/ a B), if only it were that easy :)

  142. J-Dawg

It’s not going to be tough for Girardi to fill Torre’s shoes at all. You can replace a great manager or coach and have success instantly. At Kentucky, Tubby Smith won a national title in his first year after replacing Rick Pitino. Girardi could win it all in his first year after replacing Torre. ANYTHING is possible.

  143. Joe M

Are you being paid at work——than do your job an watch Sports center this evening

  144. G. Love

Good stuff. Getting Mo resigned is a big move. Him and Pettite coming back are keys to the off season.

While I love Posada, that’s a bad contract waiting to happen. If he catches another 2 years we’re lucky and 2007 aside, he normally doesn’t hit enough to qualify as a good DH candidate.

I hope he comes back, but I hope any talk of a 4 year extension for Posada is just talk. Give him 3 years, take it or leave it. No one catches when they are 40.

As for O’neil as a coach, that would be fun to watch. I only wish Arod had stuck around. I don’t think he could handle having Girardi as a manager and O’Neil as a coach. I doubt it’s going to happen though. I think O’Neil likes his life away from the game every day.

I like Tuck as the bench coach, but I also wouldn’t mind seeing Pena or Bowa in that spot. Pena is such a good presence on this team, I hope Girardi doesn’t get threatened by him.

I don’t like Harkey as the primary pitching coach. I actually think there needs to be a little continuity in the pitching coach and I think Eiland should get the nod. He’s done a great job developing these guys and getting them ready for the call up to the bigs. He should be rewarded. It’s not time for Joba and Hughes to have a new voice in their ears.

As for Donnie, I think he knows in the back of his head that his dream of managing this team isn’t dead. If Girardi struggles, Mattingly is a candidate. I have a feeling they were 1A and 1B in the meetings and Girardi won because of experience and perceived toughness which is what this team needs.

  145. Laura

Guys, I live in Chicago and my White Sox friends here say that the reason Rowand gets so many props is that he makes easy plays seem more difficult by approaching the ball the wrong way. Don’t know if this is true; I don’t watch White Sox baseball (except when the Yankees come to town). I only remember what I saw Rowand do a couple of years ago at the Stadium. He must have tracked down 3 balls that seemed like sure hits. I still say we should keep Melky, but if the Cashman is going to deal him for Santana, I’d go for Rowand. Hunter is injured too much for my tastes.

  146. pat

    Jeters Future Wife
Damon has known Alex pre-Boras since they were teenagers. They played together on All Star teams in Florida. I think players appreciated his talent but I know someone who works at Yankee Stadium and he says he had friends in the clubhouse.

Cano gave the answer you would expect all players to give but it has been reported that he spent alot of time with A-Rod this season so I would guess he might actually like him.

Jeter didn’t comment on Torre leaving for 5 or 6 days and he thought of him as a second father. I wouldn’t expect him to say anything about A-Rod; who he has had a turbulent relationship with.

  147. Mike R.

    Sunny

The sinker is not his ONLY pitch, it’s just that neither of his other pitches are as good as his sinker. Wang also throws a change up and a slider.

  148. raymagnetic

From Keith Law and I agree with his assessment wholeheartedly. The net difference is not worth it –

Dominic (Denver): Neyer blogged he heard a rumor of the Yankees possibly offering Melky-Wang-Kennedy for Santana. From a scouts perspective, is this too much?

Keith Law: That rumor is false, and it’s ridiculous too – why would you give up three years of Wang PLUS the two other guys for one year of Santana? The difference between Santana and Wang in that one year might be over one win, but fewer than two. Giving up two years of Wang, six years of Kennedy, and four or five of Melky for that one win is insane. And anyway, the whole thing’s bogus.

  149. Peter Abraham

Somebody got the number to the call, impersonated me and I got thrown off the call for a few minutes.

Excellent, thanks so much. How to screw up my job.

  150. sunny615

Mike – I understand – but like Wang said during the season – those two pitches are a work in progress and he lacks control with them. They aren’t plus pitches nor are they out pitches. And in order for them to be effective in their current state of development, his sinker has to be on.

  151. sunny615

Keith Law is under the assumption that it doesn’t involve any talks for an extension. So while the rumor may be bogus, his analysis is faulty.

  152. mel

Joe was great. C-money on now.

  153. pat

  155. Laura

Don’t wait for Jeter’s comment about A-Dog to show up anytime soon. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jeter threw a party to celebrate A-Liar being gone.

  156. J-Dawg

Yes, that trade wouldn’t be for one year of Santana, the Yankees make the extension and get possibly four or five years of Santana, maybe more. The only way that they would trade that collection of players for a one-year rental would be if Steve Phillips or some other idiot snuck into the Yankees’ front office. In other words, it ain’t happenin’!

  157. Go NYR

I think Pettitte coming back depends on his relationship with Girardi. One would assume that he is nearly as close friends with Joe Girardi as he was Torre. I dont think losing Torre impacts Andy’s decision as much as some are making it out to be. Girardi caught him 4 years of his career. They were teammates at one point and that might make Andy more likely to stay than if Torre were manager. You have to look at both sides of the issue.

I don’t care about what Schilling says at all, but you know that he would consider coming to the Yankees. All of these comments from Schilling are just a facade. It is easy to tell that he wants to be a Yankee because he will not stop talking about it. He is probably hoping against all hope that Brian Cashman will offer him a deal. Schilling would see New York as the opportunity to pitch on THE biggest stage of them all and to possibly further his chance to make the Hall of Fame. I have never believed anything that Schilling has said, and it’s not time to start now. I don’t want him here under any circumstances, but he would come to New York at the first opportunity.

Austin Jackson is going to be special. The Yankees did a very interesting thing with him this summer.

He was doing ok in Charleston. On the advice of Mark Newman and Stick, they felt he needed more of a challenge to bring out his entire game. So, they promoted him to Tampa (against much better Class A pitching) and he took off.

The kid has been raking ever since.

At this pace, he may see September AB’s for the Yankees next season.

Its going to be a lot of fun watching Austin and Jose Tabata next season.

I wouldn’t trade for Santana. I don’t see the logic in that, while giving up IPK, Melky, Wang, and/or Horne. Not with the yearly injuries suffered by the Yankees pitching staff.

  195. SJ44

    Bobcat,

Agreed. Its also why Damon’s contract fits so well. Only two years to go on that deal.

After a lot of thought, the guy I want at third base next year is Joe Crede. Short term, he’s a great fit. Great glove, clutch hitter, a winning type of player. Reminds me a lot of Scott Brosius.

Here’s what I like about Crede:

He’s only 30 and has one year to go on his contract. Its always interesting to me how well guys play in their walk years. Like Mike Lowell this year. Crede will be looking for a big money deal and a big 2008 gets him that deal. That means, you get a VERY hungry player.

He had back surgery and is now healthy.

The White Sox may non-tender him in December. If they don’t, he can be had without giving up “A” List prospects.

If the emphasis is going to be on pitching with this organization, you need gritty, tough guys who treat defense with the same passion as offense. That’s Joe Crede.

  196. Jeter's Future Wife

oh please, Curt Schilling coming to pitch for the Yankees is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. He would retire before wearing pinstripes!

  197. J-Dawg

I know that they would never sign him, but he would definitely play for them as big as his ego is.

  198. S.o.S.27

Does anyonelse think that we should not pick up abreus option, instead use that money for Rowand, having Melky play right and Damon in left.

  199. Lee

SJ44: “I’m all for discussing Arod’s next destination. It would be nice though if some thought went into these stories.”

What is your take on the possibility of Arod going to the Red Sox?

  200. Clueless Day

What drafts picks do we get for arod ?

  201. Jake

    no SoS,

Further devoids our team of power. Remember, Rowand had such a great year playing in Philly…that ballpark is like Mile High, balls fly.

    SJ44,

Perhaps Crede would be a good fit. One of my friends hung out with the White Sox during spring training the summer after they won it all and said that Crede was one of the most arrogant, rude a$$holes he’s ever met. No joke. Said Podsednik was a super-nice guy as was Jermaine Dye.

  202. S.o.S.27

    Jake,
Abreu comes from philly with no power as well. Whats the problem?

  203. Jake

if you want speed, go with rowand, if you want patience at the plate and more power, stick with abreu. i am not a big abreu guy, don’t get me wrong, but with the loss of A-Rod, we need as much pop as we can get, even if abreu’s hr totals are down…likewise, rowand will get overpaid in this year’s FA market.

  204. S.o.S.27

If not Rowand, Jones in a one year deal. Yes he strikes out too much, but is majic with the glove and will want to prove something. Plus hes not affraid of walls.

  205. KB in New Haven

That would be so great if O’Neill signs as a coach with Girardi, even better as a first base coach. Then we when play Boston he can keep telling Youklis that he “knows Paul O’Neill and you, sir, are no Paul O’Neill”.
