State of the blog: So far, so good

October
31

The big server upgrade seems to have worked. If you have any problems, please let me know.

I’m told the mobile version works as well, although we’re not sure about the iPhone. Still, you should be able to read it.

If any comment you made this morning didn’t appear, that may be because of the transition. Feel free to post it again.

Thanks

    Its awesome.

  4. JJNJ

So far, so good! It’s definitely running faster :)

  5. jennifer- congrats JOE G

Pete any word on when the press conference is being held?

  6. DadinIowa

It was working swell. But, it seems to have gone bad again in the past hour. Is it back online again? Sigh?

On a baseball note, isn’t the best free agent Japanese player a third baseman? Fukadome or something like that? Is he being considered as a replacement?

I would sure rather pick up a free agent third baseman than doing something idiotic like trading Melky for Cabrera (Florida style).

Thanks for all your work on the blog. Its great!

  7. DadinIowa

    Press conference? For what?

  8. Mike R.

Excellent! Definitely a much needed upgrade.

  9. desiyankee

  10. YankeeGM

Petey is a cult hero. Too big for his servers…

Was looking around saw that wood is a FA. Hey, can’t be any worse then farnsworthless.

  11. jennifer- congrats JOE G

For Joe G. They need to break bread with him.

Also, you know the Marlins will want the farm for Cabera espically given the fact that Joe G is here now. They would not make it easy for the Yankees to get him. I don’t want us giving up any one of our big three pitchers for him.

wow - good job lohud people - this blog is very smooth.

now if you could just install an edit, preview and/or delete button - that would be peachy.

    Pete:

Its been quite a week for you! You broke the Torre news. Then you broke the server! I’m glad your boss thinks this upgrade is worth it. I’m also certain that it is just a matter of time before the boys from Bristol show up with contract to sign and pen in hand. You do a great job on the blog and in interviews. And I hope you are well-rewarded for it.

Good thing there is increased server capacity. Just imagine the ups and downs with the winter-meetings and the eventual trades and free agent signings.

And then, if we think the A-Rod story will just go away, we are kidding ourselves. Boras will work this for every dime, A-Rod will give his interview (hopefully, not on Oprah) to show perspective new employers that he is not really that self-centered, and that he really does want a home.

I just hope Artie Moreno is as smart as everyone says he is. As far as A-Rod goes, I am a NIMBY –not in my backyard!

I’m just not sure that trading a young, high ceiling arm to get a bat is the best option… isnt that what the team is now saying that they are moving away from? and isnt that why the yankees are sitting here without a championship the past couple years- because they’ve gotten the big bats to fill the lineup, but dont have the pitching to dominate?

as enticing as Miguel Cabrera could be in this lineup to replace ARod, and I think some combo of Melky, Hughes, and another prospect could get it done, I’d rather take that package and make a bid on an Ace, like a Johan or Roy Oswalt-type pitcher.

You can put a lesser package together, and get a 3B on the next tier down, like a Garret Atkins, or like someone mentioned in the other posting, go out and get a prospect, like LaRoche in LA or Headley in SD.

  15. chris

    WOW!!! Much faster. Thank You.

  16. mysterjc

Great job Pete and others responsible! The place I come to FIRST for the fastest breaking Yankees news just got faster! Thanks!

I agree on the edit button. I usually need it!

I’m not on the dealing young pitchers bandwagon for a third baseman.

I don’t see the logic of dealing Kennedy, Hughes or Joba (these are the guys teams want, not Clippard and/or DeSalvo) for the Miguel Cabrera’s of the world.

First off, I think you see if Mike Lowell files for free agency. If he does, you make a strong play because that only costs you draft picks. If you don’t sign him, at least it raises the price for the Red Sox to re-sign.

Then, you look at other options and try to find the next Scott Brosius-type of player for the position.

I’d hold onto the young pitching unless you have a shot at Johan Santana. If you do (and he agrees to an extension), then you consider dealing one of the prized young arms.

But, for a bat? Nope. Wouldn’t think about it.

Posted this in the previous post but was just curious if anyone had an answer:

If anyone has a clue as to how the rotation will work next year, please elaborate…

If things stand pat - the 2008 rotation looks like this:
    Wang
    Pettitte
    Hughes
    Chamberlain
    Moose
    (possibly Kennedy as a 6th)

My confusion comes from the fact that both Hughes and Joba pitched 114 innings last year (IPK threw 165). Cash adheres to the 30+ per year standard pretty well which means Hughes and Joba will probably max out at 150 IP in 08. I understand that we won’t need a 5th until June, but that’s still a very tight leash for a whole season for 2 starting pitchers. (I think it’s reasonable to assume he throws that out the window in the playoffs if we make it)… Is Kennedy rotated in and out to keep arms fresh? Do they remove them early during blow out games (winning or losing), Will there be the Rookie Rules in place? Thanks!

  22. Migames

“you look at other options and try to find the next Scott Brosius-type of player for the position”

an average 3rd baseman with a good glove.

  23. mary ellen

Wow, very fast - any news on Mo yet?

  24. Migames

“Cash adheres to the 30+ per year standard pretty well which means Hughes and Joba will probably max out at 150 IP in 08.”

Thats why next year wont be a *typical* year.

In 09, we will kick a$$

  25. CaptainsCorner

I think Arod is definitely 100% signing with the Angels. That is the 1 team out of the Giants, Cubs, Dodgers etc. that are good every year. Bora-ASS definitely talked to them during the year and they told him they would be interested, since he is at there stadium all the time. Arod didnt say all of those good things about Scioscia and the team all year for nothing. Bor-ASS probably likes him closer to him anyway so he can tighten the leash even more. You can bet within the next week Arod will have an interview how he liked playing in NY and the door isnt closed on staying there. All of the garbage just to get the Angels to give him more $$$$.

  26. J-Dawg

I know that there were some who were worried about how Girardi may overwork young pitchers with the Yankees just like he did in Florida. I am not among them. Girardi will learn very quickly, if not already, that Cashman is going to keep a tight reign on Chamberlain, Hughes, and Kennedy. Cashman has a plan with all three of these pitchers and he will make sure that Joe knows that. Cashman’s a firm believer in innings caps and he will have no problem relaying that message to Girardi.

  27. Jane C

DadinIowa - Fukudome is an OF from what I understand. He would be a nice acquisition, but again he is another left-handed power bat.

Pete - any chance we will hear anything today regarding Mo?

  28. saucy

may not work on the iPhone? you mean to tell me something may not work on an apple product that seems to work on just about everything else? wow

  29. CaptainsCorner

Since Hugh/Kenn/Joba are going to be held to under 200 innings I think it is really important that Pettitte decides to come back. Then you would have him and Wang at the top instead of Wang and Mussina and then the 3 kids. They might even have to go with a 6 man rotation for awhile. Yanks should call Pettitte and offer another player option for ‘09 if that is what he wants. Tell him he can pitch in the new stadium, they need him back!! There is not 1 good starting pitcher that is a free agent.

  30. x23

The site seem to be alternating between the mobile version and the full web version on the iphone. Its too bad since the iphone displays the full web version a lot better then the mobile version.

  31. Bobcat

It sure seems counter-productive to trade the prospects that Cashman has worked so hard to acquire. It’s been a dramatic philosophical change for the organization and I think they should stick to their guns and solve the problem (i.e., holes in the lineup) from within. That’s assuming there is no cheap solution that makes sense (such as Ian Stewart or a bandaid like Crede). If that means playing Betemit at 3B, so be it. There aren’t many answers in the FA Class of 2008.

The mantra for 2008 is “patience”, so they take the hit and cleanse the roster for 2009’s FA class:
