Torre gathering up the old gang in LA

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Oct 31, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

This is interesting.

Along with Don Mattingly, Joe Torre is likely to bring Larry Bowa to the Dodgers and possibly Lee Mazzilli as well. It’ll be Yankees West at Chavez Ravine.

Wouldn’t it be something if A-Rod signed with the Dodgers?

it’s just like the yankees…except without any good players.

  2. #9 October 31st, 2007 at 12:41 am

Can they take Michael Kay & Suszyn Waldman with them as well?!

  3. Paulie October 31st, 2007 at 12:44 am

Good to see Lee Mazzilli back with Joe. Does LA have enough money to lure Arod? I see Arod either a Tiger, Angel or Giant in 2008.

  4. kd October 31st, 2007 at 12:46 am

is anyone buying into ken rosenthal’s theory that arod had a deal before he opted out? my hunch is that he’s right.

i am actually happy to see torre get a job and take the old guard yankees with him. we’re now going to see how good he really is, because the dodgers are dysfuncitonal and not that good

  5. gayle October 31st, 2007 at 12:47 am

I can just see Jeff Kent and Arod on the same team what fun that would be two selfish players they can be lockermates

  6. Mike R. October 31st, 2007 at 12:48 am

    Where does Zim fit in?

  7. Carmine October 31st, 2007 at 12:48 am

Completely unrelated, but David Riske declined his player option with the Royals today. He’s been an effective reliever in the tough AL Central for a few years. Might be a guy the Yankees could look at, but I imagine he’ll be in demand.

  8. Master Wangkee October 31st, 2007 at 12:48 am

If there’s one player in baseball Arod actually respects it’s…Barry Bonds. Why Barry? Attention. Period. The SanFran fans are primed to cheer for another stat chaser. Whether the team loses or not, Arod will get lots of attention and money (sounds kinda like a Cosmo girl doesn’t it?)

More importantly, Pac Bell wants the giant asterisk removed from the Stadium sign. What better way to cover it up? Bring in Mr. Clean. He’ll win many MVP’s and avoid as many playoff games as possible.

  9. Mr. Faded Glory October 31st, 2007 at 12:52 am

The Dodgers tried to build Red Sox West in 2005, and that failed. Yankees West will fare no better.

  10. Rebecca--Optimist Prime October 31st, 2007 at 12:53 am

We’re gonna have to do LAD game posts here as well as Yankee posts, won’t we?

2008 is gonna be one helluva year. Or, at least, one helluva April.

  11. randyhater October 31st, 2007 at 12:54 am

Any chance Joe will take Giambi, Mussina and Farnsworth, too? No Gator on that list. Interesting.

  12. pat October 31st, 2007 at 1:04 am

How about Roger Clemens for pitching coach?

  13. Mr. Faded Glory October 31st, 2007 at 1:07 am

Rebecca: We’re gonna have to do LAD game posts here as well as Yankee posts, won’t we?

Why? Let Joe and his cronies suffer in peace in LA.

  14. Paulie October 31st, 2007 at 1:14 am

I’m assuming Joe T. is holding on to Rick Honeycutt as the pitching coach of the Dodgers. Word out here in the Bay Area was that if Mattingly got the Yankee gig, Dave Righetti was pretty much a lock to be his pitching coach.

  15. Mike R. October 31st, 2007 at 1:14 am

How about Matsui, Damon and cash for Matt Kemp. :)

  16. Carmine October 31st, 2007 at 1:19 am

    Rebecca:

Your name is amazing. That is all.

  17. Dee October 31st, 2007 at 1:49 am

Gawd No, Arod better not go to the Dodgers, I was planning to start rooting for them. Arod, stop ruining everything. Please go away and start your own league, maybe in Vegas where fans can place bets freely during the game, have strippers for 7th inning stretch, and players can all dope freely. You can take Barry Bonds with you.

  18. Larry Bowa October 31st, 2007 at 1:53 am

Pete, I am so confused. Am I going to Seattle or Los Angeles?

  19. Miguel October 31st, 2007 at 1:59 am

As long as A-Rod is in the NL, I don’t care where he goes. in the AL he just might murder us. in the NL, the only time we’d see him in a meaningful game is in the World Series, where, somehow, I don’t see him as much of a threat!! lol.

  20. cc October 31st, 2007 at 2:00 am

There’s a Warren Zevon song called “Join Me in L.A.”

    Joe’s singing it now…

  21. deanNY October 31st, 2007 at 2:07 am

    Dee
You wouldn’t hate so much if you didn’t care.

  22. Mr. Faded Glory October 31st, 2007 at 2:33 am

“Larry Bowa will leave the Yankees for Seattle.” – Peter Abraham, 11:06 pm

“Along with Don Mattingly, Joe Torre is likely to bring Larry Bowa to the Dodgers.” – Peter Abraham, 12:32 am

So… which is it, Pete? Pick a horse here.

  23. whoa October 31st, 2007 at 2:43 am

Kay says that A-Rod never forgave Torre for the embarrassment of batting him 8th in the 2006 ALDS, but of course, A-Rod worships money, so who knows.

As for coaches, I never thought much of Mazzilli. I thought his OF alignments were awful.

  24. whoa October 31st, 2007 at 2:46 am

The LAD game posts idea is a sick joke, right? Right?

  25. kasey October 31st, 2007 at 2:58 am

if torre’s there and mattingly’s there, i’ll pull for the team. it’s that simple for me. i hope the dodgers meet the yankees in the world series.

that scenario seems pretty unlikely, though.

  26. SL October 31st, 2007 at 3:37 am

Maybe Dodgers should trade for Wang. Then Torre would manage all
    3 Taiwanese pitchers!

  27. bob Glassberg October 31st, 2007 at 6:17 am

So Zimmer is going to be back with the Dodgers after 47 years?

  28. ND Yank October 31st, 2007 at 6:21 am

Those of you calling Joe Torre classless for negotiating with the Dodgers while Grady little was the manager have to also call our new manager, you know the one who can do no wrong, Joe Girardi classless. He and his reps have been in constant contact with the Dodgers throughout this whole process as well.

  29. Tommy October 31st, 2007 at 7:19 am

Peter, you have Bowa going to Seattle and LA.
    Which is the stronger feeling?

It will be interesting to see Torre deal with that shining beacon of humanity, Jeff Kent!

I’ve been anti Dodger since the trash comments made about playing in Yankee Stadium during the 78 WS.

What about the contract? He will still be the highest paid manager. Should the Dodgers pay this level of $ for a manager?

  30. Evil Fox News Shill October 31st, 2007 at 7:39 am

no one should be surprised. you take who you know and trust with you. no one should have a problem with these guys going to L.A. good for Joe. good for Donnie. best of luck. just don’t cross our path. :)

  31. Scott Proctor's Right Arm October 31st, 2007 at 8:39 am

Joe’s coming to LA? I’m just starting to get some rest. Back to the salt mines…

  32. Dee October 31st, 2007 at 8:39 am

    deanNY –

I don’t hate. I’m just passionate about my team and disappointed in those who betrayed us. But Yes, I care.

  33. Andrea October 31st, 2007 at 9:08 am

    I’ll certainly miss Larry Bowa

  34. Laura October 31st, 2007 at 9:13 am

I’m going to miss Bowa’s energy.

Every time I think of Bobby Meacham, all I can see is he and Dale Berra being tagged out at the plate one after the other. Those were bad times in Yankeesland.

  35. Chris NY October 31st, 2007 at 9:15 am

I hope A-Rod does go there so he’s out of the AL and we don’t have to face him. He can be like Jeter’s half brother competing for Daddy time with Torre now that Jeter’s on the other side of the country. Motivation enough for headcase-Rod.

But Joe, leave JORGE ALONE! Georgie stays here, please.

  36. li October 31st, 2007 at 9:16 am

Charlie Steiner is at LA, right?

Based on the audio from the interview with Grady Little and the GM, the LA media are pitbulls. I guess Joe T will have to put them in their place ASAP.

I am really excited about Joe G and his supposed staff. Good or bad, things are and will be interesting.

Who was it that said the Yanks had become boring? Pete?

  37. Phil October 31st, 2007 at 9:27 am

ARod never forgave Torre for throwing him under the bus during the 2006 ALDS.

  38. hmmm October 31st, 2007 at 9:41 am

“Those of you calling Joe Torre classless for negotiating with the Dodgers while Grady little was the manager have to also call our new manager, you know the one who can do no wrong, Joe Girardi classless. yeah, this little meme is pretty silly. it is neither classless nor classy of Torre/Girardi to negotiate with LA, it simply IS.

    it is standard operating procedure.

why does everything on this blog have to be about “class”?

  39. donnienybaseball October 31st, 2007 at 9:42 am

laura – that’s hilarious abouth meacham and berra…i also think matt nokes, stve balboni, pags…too funny. meacham?????

  40. scarletknight64 October 31st, 2007 at 9:54 am

Good for Joe. He gave us 12 straight years of excitement, sometimes painful, but more often joyful. The last time this happened for me anyway, was the Stengel years from 1949-1960. I dont think we’ll see a run like this anytime soon.

The nightmare scenario for us however is if he can pry loose some of the players like Pettitte and would you be surprised if Clemens takes another short season deal back in the NL where its not as tough on pitchers.

I hope Joe gets to the World Series and meets us and we win in 7. That would be great and though it would be a loss for Joe, it certainly would make a statement.

Now I have this feeling that if the Dodgers want to spring for the money, which I question, A-Rod could wind up there but ever since the All-Star game I thought he would wind up in SF if he opts out. He would be the big dog, its a great city if you’ve ever been there, very cosmopolitan. I dont see him going anywhere but the West Coast but what do I know.

  41. SJ44 October 31st, 2007 at 10:00 am

Some of you need to learn a little about baseball and business.

Neither Torre nor Girardi were classless for negotiating with the Dodgers. Its business. Nobody did anything wrong.

Some of you are whining about the coaching staff. Based on their playing careers? Are you serious?

One’s playing career has NOTHING to do with their coaching abilities.

Jim Leyland and Tony LaRussa has non-existent careers. They turned out “ok”, didn’t they?

You all fawn over Larry Bowa and he was an awful manager.

Do yourselves a favor and either learn a little about the game and the business of baseball or take a break from the blog.

Writing such nonsense brings the entire quality of the blog down to pre-school level.

  42. Art October 31st, 2007 at 10:04 am

Does anyone know if David Wells is going to pitch next year. The Dodgers really would be Yankees West circa 2002-2003 with Boomer, Rocket and Andy. Come on, would that really make any sense?

  43. B October 31st, 2007 at 10:40 am

I’m hoping that Torre and Coletti’s preference for older, less talented players means that guys like LaRoche, Kemp, Loney, Abreu, Hu, and Billingsley will be available now. It will be interesting to see if Joe will be able to deal with the rookie mistakes these guys will make.

  44. Miller October 31st, 2007 at 11:00 am

Whoever said the comment about Jeff Kent and A-Rod is dead on. I would love to see that soap opera.

Although I gurantee A-Rod would never get into an altercation with him, he would direct all his hostility through the media. A-Rods a P*ssy when it come to that.

JK, on the other hand, is a bad ass, IMO.

  45. goirish October 31st, 2007 at 12:53 pm

I refuse to accept the thought of Mattingly in another uniform. I may cry when I see it.

  46. chris in fairfield October 31st, 2007 at 2:30 pm

cant wait to see how torre does with a fraction of the talent he had on the yanks . i like torre but he certainly benefited from the yanks payroll .

  47. Michael T October 31st, 2007 at 2:52 pm

LA is perfect for Joe. He can small ball up a strom in the “little” league and reunite with Scott Procter.

I think Arod is headed to the Angels in a deal that Borass already had cooked up, just like he did for JD Drew.

  48. ramar October 31st, 2007 at 6:45 pm

I will miss A-Rod’s hot streaks. They were really exciting see these last 4 yrs. I totally disrespect him and any other “super star” Yankee whose ego put them above the beloved “pinstripes”.

  49. maximus October 31st, 2007 at 6:45 pm

A ROD will go to the dodgers!! The dodgers will also trade Matt Kemp & Clayton kershaw for SANTANA!! Dodgers pitiching rotation will kill with arod in the lineup dodgers would win world series

  50. Bill October 31st, 2007 at 7:56 pm

I really have nothing against A-Rod. He switched to 3B, won 2 MVPs and was a positive influence on Cano & Melky. If he wants to test the Free Agency market or just doesn’t want to be a Yankee, that’s his perogative. But he is once again, his own worst enemy in PR. You can never believe what he says. If he wanted to explore his opportunities, he should have said so rather than gushing about how he couldn’t imagine himself in another uniform. And the idea of whether 3 guys in their mid to late 30′s would be resigning with the Yankees was impacting whether he wanted to commit to a 10 year contract is laughable.

Boras is smart so you have to think he has a good read on the market but I just keep wondering who is really going to give him a 8 year plus contract at $30MM/year. The Dodgers would seem as good a candidate as any but McCourt is not one of the wealthiest owners and is thought to be stingy, and they are still pissed at Boras for orchestrating JD Drew’s opt out last year and may not want to deal with him.
