I don't believe they will have to pay the luxury tax in 2009 because they are funding the new stadium.

yomas - I hadn't heard that and when I did a quick google of the revenue sharing, nothing like that came up.

It is in the CBA but there is no way I am going to read through that. I (almost) would rather read Schilling's blog.

On a side note, I think Schilling should go to the Mets. He would be able to tutor the young anchors of the staff... Pedro and El Duque.

Peavy, Vlad, Crawford all have cheap options for 2009, they will all be picked up.

My take on Arod's interview with WFAN in spring training was that he had a chance to play for "like 5-6 other teams". He rejected a trade because he knew he would be opting out and didn't want to add another team to his growing team hopping list. He'd rather secure his reputation than let the Yankees be justly compensated. Sure, it's his right, but it still stinks.

well for the 2009 season the threshold will be 170 mil so when they sign those free agents, the yanks won't be hit like they have been. also i also heard that mlb because of its revenue sharing plan made so much money that next year all teams will be getting 30 mil (including the yanks).. does anyone know if that is true?

Don't forget, the lower the Yankees payroll, less in luxury tax/revenue sharing. If they don't spend the money, the less they help other teams.

And they can count construction of the new stadium against the formula for sharing. So they will really hurt other team if they lower payroll.

In 2006, the Yankees contributed $77 million (that's what I found anyway) towards revenue sharing. Money to help others. Drop payroll, add in the stadium deducts and that number might be closer to $35 million (not $50 bucks as one of my last posts. I am guessing on the $35 million.

Florida will want Joba or Phil, Melky, and another prospect for Miggy. Why would the Yanks want that deal? He is headed for 1st base within 2 years and will be the next Fielder in girth. After next year, we may have Texiera at first anyway since we know Boras is taking him to free agency.

Also Hal said tranisition for a reason. 2008 may not be up to standard for the product that we are accustomed to seeing but that's because the 2008 class is weak. However you free up 100 mil, in 2009 you have the following free agents to go after if they don't sign an extension with their current teams: Santana, Peavy, Sabathia, Sheets, Burnett, Texiera, Vlad (possible dh), KRod, Nathan, Crawford. The following year free agent class is not bad at all either I might add.

With 100 mil saved in those 2 years, I think you will see 1 or 2 of the pitchers signed to go with the big 3. You will see tex and/or crawford. Also if you are going to make a free agent splash, why not do it all in the same year because draft pick compensation is not rolled over into the next year. The yanks have drafted so many live arms and signed so many IFA's that they can take a year off to develop those kids as well.

To defend my earlier comment, I wasn't knocking the A's draft. I obviously understand the way Billy Beane was working at the time(though their payroll this year was pretty middle of the league rather than bottom of the barrel). I meant to emphasize that Swisher and Blanton were two good additions for their team. Swisher is a solid young hitter and Blanton's very good.
