Lowell will be 34 at the start of 2008, so he certainly has a few good years left. He's certainly been helped by Fenway but he's shown he can hit anywhere. If we discard the last two years as a Red Sox and his awful last year as a Marlin (to be fair), here are his stats by year:

2002 .346 OBP, .276 BA, 24 HR, 92 RBI
2003 .350 OBP, .276 BA, 32 HR, 105 RBI
2004 .365 OBP, .293 BA, 27 HR, 85 RBI

His Home run production has dropped, but he's driven in 80 runs every season since 2000 except for his horrible 2005. That's the type of player the Yankees need, not a superstar. I'd go into it knowing not to expect his Boston numbers. I suspect his average would drop a bit here but his homers would go up without the Monster to turn them into doubles.

To furter my argument, look at Lowell's splits the past two years. On the road:

2006 .310 BA, 11 HR, 38 RBI
2007 .276 BA, 7 HR, 47 RBI

Certainly not as good numbers as at Fenway, but good enough to suspect he'd hit around .280 and drive in 80 runs, play a great 3B and have good at bats. IMO, it's worth whatever risk there is.

Brandon: I'd rather Lowell than Betemit. Lowell has a much better glove and strikes out less. Those things have nothing to do with what park you play in.

"For Third Base Lowell is still the best choice. He plays the game hard, has a great glove and works tough at bats. Even if his production slips at Yankee Stadium, you’d still expect 80 RBI from him which is fine. "

he had a career year he's not going to get better than that as he grows old , 2 places I see Lowell Fenway Park or Citizens Bank Park in Philly. He's not going to get anywhere near 80 RBI in Yankee Stadium, here there is no wall to give you an automatic base hit

I'm glad to hear Jorge was interested in ending the rumors of not getting along with Joe. Shows he is interested in staying. I wish the Yankees would get him and Mo wrapped up and than move on to talking Andy into coming back. Than getting a third baseman so we don't have to worry about Alex coming back. Shut the door and throw away the key on that front.

Cano for Linecum would not work for me.
Tim Linecum has great potential as a starter, but that is currently the Yankees' strongest asset in their MiLB organization.
They have fewer position players that are "A" prospects - especially infielders and catchers.
Cano, at 24, is potentially the best second basemen in baseball.

For Third Base Lowell is still the best choice. He plays the game hard, has a great glove and works tough at bats. Even if his production slips at Yankee Stadium, you'd still expect 80 RBI from him which is fine. Signing him means you don't have to trade any of the young pitchers, though the team will lose a draft pick. I might go as high as 5 years. Lowell is still young, but a 4 year deal is still preferable.

As for The Hardball Times article quoted earlier, I stopped reading after the proposed Santana trade. Melky, Rasner, Betemit and Duncan for the an ace lefty. The Twins would never do it. Rasner is at best a back-end starter, Betemit a reserve who has too many flaws in his swing and Shelley shows some potential but isn't a big time prospect. No way a deal for Santana gets done without a stud pitching prospect, most likely Hughes or Kennedy. I'd be very reluctant to do that. Hard to take that seriously.

I think in the Tracy Ringsolby article on Foxsports, he meant to say Noah Lowry is available for a decent bat, not Tim Lincecum.

Boston Dave-

The Yankees might look at Kerry Wood...

Last year though he had some rules on how he could be used, kind of like Joba, but not as strict.

It would be a really risky pickup.
