Cashman has “a good hunch” on Pettitte

The general managers just went into a dinner. I stopped Brian Cashman and he said nothing had happened yet, but to check back with him later.
“What about Andy Pettitte?” I asked.
“I have a good hunch,” he said with a smile.
“C’mon, give me something,” I shot back.
“It’s just a hunch,” he said.
That was that. Damn you, Brian Cashman.
Based on his smile. I suspect Pettitte is coming back. But then that has seemed likely right along. I’m working on getting his agents and will report back what I find out.

Cool. Thanks!
Gotta love pettitte!!!!
I have a hunch that the bombers need to resign Pettite if they want to win in october.
Good news, sounds like it! I love this blog for this very type of post, thanks Pete.
The Grandmaster Ca$h be frontin’. The pimp-dizzlest shizzle GM in the game.
Good, we definitely need Andy back. His veteran leadership is most important for the team. Plus, he is our only lefty starter.
Great post Peter. Blogs are simply awesome for this type of instant update. And, this blog in particular is the best around for news of this sort.
Dude, I’m all for giving Andy a plaque in Monument Park.
Who’s with me?
How cool are blog entries like this? Thanks. Next best thing to being there.
We need a plaque for Andy, Jorge, and Mo in addition to a fifth ring.
It’s getting crunch time for Andy to decide, his deadline on whether to exercise his option is Wednesday. This sounds like a very good sign but I won’t get too excited yet. But it is a good sign.
Rebecca- I’m all for it. No Yankee should be allowed to wear #46 again!
Best baseball blog on the net..no doubt
Very good news if his hunch is right…
Yankees need Pettitte if they want to stay competitive in the AL East.
Both Boston and Toronto have good pitching staffs. The D’Rays and Orioles won’t be schlubs either.
J-Dawg – it doesnt matter if he decides by the deadline. he can sign whenever he wants.
Funny that Cash said nothing “yet” and “check back later”.
Could that mean something is brewing?
Please God let this be true.
Hank Steinbrenner the other day pretty much said that Pettitte does not have a deadline. It sure would be nice for Andy to re-up for another season. His veteran presence, not to mention his ability to pitch in big games, are absolutely necessary for the Yankees to do well next season.
Pete, thanks for the “fly on the wall-ness” of this blog.
you gotta think Andy is comin back for all the festivities of the last season of Yankee Stadium and what the Yankees will do for him ceremonially for his last game pitched for retirement, much less the fans need to say goodbye! He deserves every bit of it too!
Andy is still relatively young. He had a GOOD year that looks average because of the bullpen blowing a bunch of games for him. Add in that $16 million he will earn, you can fill in his name at opening day starter.
It just seemed like a good sign all along that Andy didn’t have to fight off any elbow problems. He was dealing with elbow pain on and off throughout his tenure with the Astros. It was the main reason why he considered retiring after last year. I think that he truly enjoys being able to pitch pain-free and he knows that he has a lot of gas left in his tank. As a Yankee fan, I would be absolutely thrilled if he decided to come back. As a sign of goodwill, the Yankees should continue to offer him player options from now until Kingdom Come.
maybe cash is being literal, and he has osteoporosis.
A-HYPE- LOL
Someone posted on here earlier that they were at Mo’s Steak house and spoke to the guy who runs it said soemthing along the lines of Mo and PO will be back!! SHould be done in a few days, just details to iron out.
Re: Andy I think they should extend the player option for next year same $$.
I know he has a lot to think about, but he’s got to come back.
He can still play.
Look for Pettitte to sign.
Win 18 games and have his ERA 3.07.
Cy Young contention.
From your lips to God’s ears, Pete! We need Andy back in the rotation. You’re the man – PeteAbe. Keep up the good work.
Andy and Mo will be back.
Po is only 50% for a couple of reasons.
Other teams may offer 4 years to Po and Yanks will not match. Also, Po is not considred a very good defensive catcher and Girardi & Cash may not be willing to pay him too much.
Top Ten Reasons Andy Pettitte Needs to Come Back
10: Because in one of my Yankee highlight videos they say “and his steely stare was a winning look”.
09: Because he can pitch in a playoff game, let a runner for the other team get on third, and then fail to allow that runner to score.
08: He’s like the G-d of ground balls, and the Wanger’s still got a little bit to learn
07: He can get hits in the World Series.
06: Because without him, Moose is the ‘veteran’ in the staring five—Sorry, CMW, but you’re not quite there yet
(albeit close)
05: There’s no one else I want pitching after a loss.
04: I’ll be able to blog about him. Well, I mean, blog more.
03: Apparently Texans make good pitchers. Just ask Roger.
02: He’s got heart. ‘nuff said.
01: The guy is EVERYTHING being a Yankee means: he is the embodiment of a gamer and he is the embodiment of class.
Po will be back. Bank it. Where will he go? I don’t think he’d stand for the crap that the Met players do. He is a Yankee!! He has a myspace page, not sure who reads it, but everyone is telling him to come back! He knows he is loved!! The Yankees will give him a fair contract.
That’s all Brian said? I think it’s funny, Pete, how he is so long-winded with his answers, but that’s all you get.
Well, let’s hope this is going to be what the majority of us want to hear!
Posada’s on Myspace?
Dang, if he was on Facebook I would soooo friend him!
His foundation has a site.
Hank Steinbrenner the other day pretty much said that Pettitte does not have a deadline.
nor should he. andy deserves some time to mull it over. hopefully he has it in him.
the only problem with plaques for andy is where it stops. jorge, mo, and bernie all have great claims, too. but what about paul o’neill? is he deserving of a plaque? clemens? david wells? before you know it we’ll be giving plaques to everyone who had anything to do with our championships and retiring graeme lloyd’s number. for what it’s worth, i say bernie and mo are in momunment park as of right now, and jorge and andy are very close.
and pete: allow me to echo other comments in this thread regarding how awesome it is to get updates like this. many of us thirst for constant news and love feeling like we’re getting as close to the organization as we can be. this is reporting at its best: we can’t be there, so you make us feel like we are. and anyone who thinks such things are superfluous can just skip them. keep up the good work.
“That was that. Damn you, Brian Cashman.”
Peter – next time have a baseball bat in hand, grab Cash by the neck, throw him against the wall and then ask him for the latest dirt…
Worked for DeNiro in ‘Goodfellas’...
I think Mo, Pettitte and Posada will be back. I doubt Derek Jeter is going to let his best friend leave the Yankees.
Just because he doesn’t make public his comments, doesn’t mean he is not working behind the scenes.
When you cut through all the whining over Torre and Arod and look at this team objectively, there are a lot of things to like about them in 2008. Assuming of course, the above 3 guys return.
You can fill the holes at first and third. Yes, they won’t score 968 runs in 2008. However, they won’t have to if the pitching and defense improves and that needs to happen.
Look around the game. Younger pitching, more athletic players, and more versatility. That’s where the game is going.
In other words, teams are building their clubs in the mold of the 1995-01 Yankees. What a concept.
For the folks who think the Yankees are just going to bid wildly for average, but name players, you are living in the past.
Its not going to happen.
Rebecca, you can still be my facebook friend! We Yankee fans need to stick together across the country
Andy is good for the Yankees and good for baseball. One more year please.
I could use some of you as Yankee buddies on my myspace page – http://www.myspace.com/stratkatinky. Feel free to add. I also have a new one related to my website – http://www.myspace.com/clubbronx
OK, pimping of myself over.
I agree with SJ – I think all 3 will be back. The waiting to find out is killing me though. Ever since Pete mentioned that Mo and his agent were meeting with the Tampa crew, it’s been the first thing I’ve wanted to hear an update on.
Zack: Awesome!
I’m not gonna give my full name out here, but I have faith in your research skills
I would be surprised to see if Andy, Mo, and Jorge are not back.
I actually hope that the Yankees don’t sign lowell, in Yankee stadium he might only hit .280 20 hr and 80 rbi. My guess is Wilson could be close. I am not sure defensively, but lowell is older and will slow down over the course of a 4 year deal. And wilson makes a whole lot less. give him and andy phillips a shot, if need be, make a mid season trade
I think Po will be back as well, even if other teams offer 4 years. There’s just no other good options out there. The offense is already taking a hit with anyone short of Cabrera that replaces ARod, so another dropoff by replacing Posada doesn’t add up.
Two things:
A. Totally agree with you Pete as it relates to Damon for Crede. We should get more. Damon is still pretty good when healthy. Why don’t the Yankees target one of their other 3Bs like Fields? Younger, no health concerns, and cheaper and then agree to eat a larger portion of Damon’s contract?
B. Andy will be back.
BREAKING NEWS: ANDY DECLINES OPTION. so much for that hunch
Okay, someone is telling me that Pettitte has DECLINED HIS OPTION
I do not get ESPN News. Can someone confirm/deny this?
Pettitte gone! No!!!
ESPNEWS has it on the bottom, but they have been wrong before. I wouldn’t make a snap judgment just yet.
If Lowell had those numbers in a Yankee uniform, I’d take it and be very happy.
Wilson Betemit is nowhere near the player Mike Lowell is at any level.
Just because somebody is younger, doesn’t mean he is better.
First off, Wilson has to lose 30 pounds. If he can’t do that, he’s not even in the conversation for any spot on the team.
Lowell is a great defensive player. Makes the barehanded play better than anyone in the game since Brosius. Add to it his class and leadership skills, and you have a very good player.
You don’t replace Arod’s production with one guy. You do it by spreading out offensive contributions throughout the lineup and (more importantly) improve your pitching and defense.
Mike Lowell is a very, very good player. No, he’s not Arod. However, he has two rings and makes the teams he plays on better.
Isn’t that what you look for when you look to acquire players?
Remember, Hank Steinbrenner said Pettitte can take more time if he needs it.
He set the stage for him declining his option so he has more time to mull it over.
Its either the Yankees or retirement. I still think he comes back, perhaps with a better deal in tow.
“I have spoken with Brian Cashman, who has reiterated what Hank Steinbrenner said about the Yankees wanting to give Andy all the time he needs to decide about next season,’’ Pettitte’s agent, Randy Hendricks, said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. “Accordingly, we are declining to exercise the option for 2008 and Andy will declare free agency in order to free up a roster spot for the Yankees.
“If Andy decides to play, I am confident we can reach an agreement with the Yankees within 24 hours. The only options, as Andy has stated, are the Yankees or retirement. He appreciates the Yankees willingness to give him the time he feels he needs. I do not expect him to make a decision for quite some time.’’
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/baseball/mlb/wires/11/05/2010.ap.bba.yankees.pettitte.0201/
If Andy had Boras as an agent, he’d decline the option tonight, 10 minutes before the owners meeting opens.
By email.
ESPN News is reporting Pettitte declined his option and elected to file for free agency.
Pete now it is time for you to get him drunk. Then we can get all of the juicy details out of him. I would be surprised if Pettitte retired. He has $16m reasons to come back and his arm didnt bother him so why retire. Pitch at the stadium for its last season, the Yanks would probably give another player option for the 1st year of the new season if he wanted it. I thought that his family moved with him to NY last year, but I guess not because people are talking about a family plan. Which he deserves because it is people like him who you can trust. Arod would be another story he would call Cash and say I was going to retire but I’ll come back if you give me a 2 year $50m extension.
holy crap. I can’t believe he declined.
Wolf your link didn’t work.
Hey espn said that Joe accepted his contract.
2008 Yankees – dont be surprised if there are no big changes. I dont think they would have bothered to get Betemit if they didnt intend to give him a chance (even if in a platoon role)

Okay, so panic over, it doesn’t mean Pettitte’s not coming back, just that he wants more time.
Man, he’s almost too classy to be real…
Andy’s just filing for free agency. I guess that I should have wiped that November 7th out of my mind. This just gives him a little extra time to make up his mind. That’s perfectly all right.
i think the two key things about that statement are:
“If Andy decides to play, I am confident we can reach an agreement with the Yankees within 24 hours…......... I do not expect him to make a decision for quite some time.â€
That throws a wrench into the planning for 08
Why? It frees up a roster spot for the Yankees and it gives him more time to decide what he wants to do.
Its the SMART thing for Andy to do.
He isn’t sticking it to the Yankees. He’s actually helping them by not tying up a roster spot while he decides his future.
Andy Pettitte is not like normal players. His son suffered a serious hip injury playing football toward the end of the season. Pettitte suffered from a lot of absentee parent guilt over that.
If you are the Yankees, the more space you give him, the better chance you have of him returning. If you push him for a decision now, you end up getting the answer you don’t want to hear.
I still think he will play next year and it will be with the Yankees.
Did anyone else just get a strange error message?
This has not been a good few weeks I have a feeling its only going to get worse.
“Posada’s on Myspace?
Dang, if he was on Facebook I would soooo friend him!”
LOL!
TTYL!
Andy has the desire to play. There is NO chance he retires unless its related to family or health issues. Relax and keep buying those #46 jerseys. ill take the bet if anyone disagrees.
RELAX.
I have a good feeling that Pettitte’s declining of the option is so he can take more time. He said 2008 Yankees or retirement.
I wouldn’t be shocked to see him sign with the Yankees for LESS than the 16 mil he would’ve made.
I agree SJ, its just not a sure thing. Wouldnt the fact that you don’t know if pettitte is coming back changes the plans for the offseasons. If andy comes back, is something less to worry about. If andy doesnt come back, then you have to deal with it, but without knowing keeps the yankees on standby while another team can strike a deal for a trade/fa/ or whatever else.
I understand the Yanks want to be nice about giving Pettitte all of the time that he needs BUT if he is not coming back then they have to get another pitcher. They will miss out on trades or if any good starting pitcher is out there if they are waiting on him. The article said he will not make a decision “for quite some time” they do not have another month or whatever that menas to give him. Is it that hard for him to decide??? If he declined it then why was Cash smiling? Unless they are writting up a new contract with another option for the next year?
Breasking News on ESPN Andy DECLINES option
Guess not….
ORLANDO, Fla.—Andy Pettitte declined his $16 million option with the New York Yankees, still uncertain whether he wants to pitch next season.
“I have spoken with Brian Cashman, who has reiterated what Hank Steinbrenner said about the Yankees wanting to give Andy all the time he needs to decide about next season,” Pettitte’s agent, Randy Hendricks, said Monday in an e-mail to The Associated Press.
He appreciates the Yankees’ willingness to give him the time he feels he needs. I do not expect him to make a decision for quite some time.”
i bet he gets a 2 year deal from the yankees maybe for slightly less than $16M per year.
or, he could retire, but i don’t think he will.
Migames – Worst case scenario, Pettitte retires and they have to start IPK as the #5 to start the season. It’s a huge loss if he retires but it’s not going to leave the team helpless.
Andy really does want to be just like Roger Clemens doesn’t he? lol
well, if you knew since the start of the offseason that Andy is not coming back, you would try to get someone to sure up that rotation. Would Cashman really go into the season with a rotation of Wang/Hughes/Mussina/Joba/ipk?igawa?
It is really funny though, that Pete made a Pettitte post and then, whaddya know, tonight’s big story is Pettitte.
It’s almost like Pete has ESP.
Except not quite.
“Quite some time” could mean early December. In today’s “please update me hourly” world we live in, Randy Hendricks probably dosen’t want to answer 500 e-mails a day. He only communicates via e-mail and he probably doesn’t want to get bothered by the media every day.
Most decisions by star players are made by early-mid December.
Unless, of course you are Arod and Scott Boras.
The Yankees and Pettitte/Hendricks are in constant contact. If you are the Yankees, its business as usual.
Its not like they aren’t going to turn down getting Johan Santana because they don’t know what Pettitte is going to do on November 5.
When Hank Steinbrenner said what he said the other day, you pretty much knew this was where it was going.
The best thing about this for all parties involved is that it will give Pettitte enough time to be 100 percent committed either way. It throws a wrench into things if Pettitte had to decide too quickly and wasn’t fully into his choice. This gives Andy the proper time to consult with the Yankees, his family, and be ready to move ahead once he has made his decision. Expect ESPN to take this and run wild with it, though.
Pete find Cash!!! Go into the restaurant with all of his GM buddies and tell him he needs to make sure Pettitte comes back. Why was he smiling??!!
All this really tells me is that Cash just owned Pete.
Andy I know your “real” family needs you, but your Yankee family needs you too!! You can move your “real” family to NY!!! PLEASE!!!
That was funny Fish.
It is still Yankees or retirement
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Andy Pettitte declined his $16 million option to return to the New York Yankees, still uncertain whether he wants to pitch next season.
“I have spoken with Brian Cashman, who has reiterated what Hank Steinbrenner said about the Yankees wanting to give Andy all the time he needs to decide about next season,†Pettitte’s agent, Randy Hendricks, said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. “Accordingly, we are declining to exercise the option for 2008 and Andy will declare free agency in order to free up a roster spot for the Yankees.

jennifer – I don’t know why that link didn’t work (it’s not working for me either). Try going here – and my myspace addy is there as well:
http://www.clubbronx.com/viewtopic.php?t=22
I think Andy just needed to do this now. This takes all the pressure off of him and allows him to take his time deciding what to do. $16 million is A LOT of pass up unless he is thinking about a 2 year deal down the road.
Well it’s offical Dandy Andy has declined his option.Well he still can pitch for us again.Just weird that once again someone optioned out before the deadline even passed.Hope he comes back we need vetern players espacially Andy Pettitte.
Also for everybody here the Yankees will not have Joba,Phil and Ian in the rotation. The yankees are not going to have 3 pitchers with not one of them without one year of major league expirence.Together the three don’t even have Two months expircence.
Bedard,Satana,Kazmir or Haren. One of them is coming soon.
Heres the link to the Pettitte option out.
