"Crede is a servicable alternative if they whiff on other guys."

They're clearly thinking of a platoon with Betemit, if this is what they want to do, which is fine with me. They should outproduce the league average, and provide adequate defense.

As for leadoff...Melky's numbers as a leadoff hitter are just fine. .293 avg and .373 OBP. In 05, Melky had the same OBP as Damon. He doesn't see as many pitches, but he gets on base at the same clip. Needs to not fall off in September, though.

The Yanks also clear some more salary here...perhaps to make a run at getting Santana?

We need more speed to put more pressure on opposing pitchers. Maybe Girardi will be more aggresive with baserunners and make do with existing speed already on team but more speed would help. Pesky baserunners get to good pitchers and would open them up to our good hitters instead of shutting them down. Too many times our 5-9 hitters would get on base and that's where they would stay. The pitcher would just move on to next hitter with little regard to the baserunner.

"So I just looked at trade rumors and they mentioned Scott Kazmir…could the Yankees get Kazmir for less than Santana?"

The Orioles are going to test the market too. They will hear offers for Bedard.

Here's the point, we need an ace. Johan is the best option no doubt, but if we can trade less for Bedard and Kazmir, the yankees wont need to offer an extension yet. Both have 2, 3 years of contract.

Imagine this, we trade Melky + Wang for Kazmir or Bedard, and with a huge lucky, Santana goes to 2009 offseason FA. Guess what? He'll be a Yankee.

Our Rotation? Santana, Kazmir(Bedard), Hughes, Joba, Kennedy.
Hell of a dream :D

Believe me NO one wants to see Betemit play on an every day basis. He cant hit lefties and he would strike out 200 times. I think a couple of times a week is ok and I think he does have a chance to be a good player but he also has to lose some weight to be better in the field.

Damon for Crede makes zero sense. Damon is an above average fielder and is a much better hitter. We'd likely have to eat part of his contract to make any trade work, so getting someone like Crede who has little offensive value really is dumb. I pray we don't make that deal.
