The Dodgers introduced Joe Torre as their manager today and had so many media show up that they held the event in center field to accomodate everybody.

Don Mattingly and Larry Bowa were officially named to his staff. It also looks like Lee Mazzilli will be out in L.A. as well.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Dodgers make a big play for Alex Rodriguez. After a rocky few years under Torre, they two became close this season. I suspect that one way or another, A-Rod will end up in California with the Angels, Giants or Dodgers.

    I’m insulted

I hope Torre does well for the Dodgers. I’ve always been ambivalent towards them, but will follow them this upcoming season to see how he does.

It will be interesting is ARod goes back into “I’m the player-GM” mode if he signs for a non-playoff bound team (Giants)

He did such a bad job in Texas doing that (Chan Ho Park) that I can’t imagine a team would let him again, but then again, a team would be pretty stupid to give him $350 million.

My friend is calling the Dodgers “Yankee West”

  4. Migames November 5th, 2007 at 5:16 pm

who knew that west coast baseball was still kickin’

  5. Jim in Dalton November 5th, 2007 at 5:18 pm

So..they got lotsa bullpen arms to break off in LA?

  6. KG86 November 5th, 2007 at 5:18 pm

Wow, not seeing Torre in pinstripes is just weird!

  7. Jonathon November 5th, 2007 at 5:20 pm

Funny that 29 other teams in the league would’ve been thrilled about getting Joe Torre as a manager.

    Only 1 wanted him gone.

Through the looking glass in Yankeeland.

  8. DC November 5th, 2007 at 5:23 pm

Wasn’t Joe Girardi the Dodger’s first choice????

  9. DC November 5th, 2007 at 5:24 pm

I did not know Joe Torre and Bowa were so close that Larry wouls follow him out to LA.

  10. A-Hype November 5th, 2007 at 5:25 pm

My friend is calling the Dodgers “Yankee West”

why? does he/she expect the Dodgers to win the division and then fall in the first round of the playoff?

  11. G.R. November 5th, 2007 at 5:29 pm

Although it was sad to see him in anything other than the pinstripes, Joe looks so much more at peace now! The guy is almost 70. It will be great for him to be away from the drama of New York and I am REALLY getting used to seeing Joe Girardi in that role now! Besides, Joe Torre and his family are now about 6 or 7 hours closer to their home in Maui!

A 2008 Yankees/Dodgers series would really be sweet!

  12. Jonathon November 5th, 2007 at 5:29 pm

No…maybe he expect the Dodgers to win 90+ games every year and win 4 championships.

I think that Joe Torre is going to enjoy having Russell Martin around. Martin will probably remind him a lot of Jorge Posada. Like Posada, Martin is not only a terrific player but also a leader. Martin has the same fiery and emotional characteristics.

how old is Torre’s wife? she looked much his junior on the press conference

  15. S.o.S.27 November 5th, 2007 at 5:35 pm

Is L.A. a place where high profile managers with past success go in the end of their coaching carreers where they are allowed to fall asleep in games and still get paid for it. First Phil Jackson, now Joe.

  16. Phil November 5th, 2007 at 5:35 pm

How’s Mattingly gonna manage the Yanks from out here?

  17. dougj1 November 5th, 2007 at 5:36 pm

Jeez- enough about an ex-Yankee manager already! Good luck to him and it’s time to forget about him. Bring on Girardi !

  18. Jonathon November 5th, 2007 at 5:48 pm

Joe Torre is going to be very successful with this team.

A lot of young players with promising futures.

Their biggest problem is the divided clubhouse. Managing those clubhouses is Torre’s biggest strength.

Dodgers will be very good next year.

  19. A-Hype November 5th, 2007 at 5:50 pm

Wiki says they’ve been married for 20 years, so she’s probably 39.

  20. UtilityMan November 5th, 2007 at 5:51 pm

That is Torres’ second wife…he had children with his first wife, and one of them(son) appeared in Analyze That with Torre at a restaurant scene.

Ali is her name…..their daughter is Andrea Rae

  21. Sparky O November 5th, 2007 at 6:16 pm

    Pete….

    Might want to note:

Don Mattingly will not be at Yankee Stadium Old Timers Day this year….Not because he is mad at the Yankees, but because the Dodgers will be having a game….

  22. catya November 5th, 2007 at 6:32 pm

The sooner we forget Arod the better,he’s toast!

Joe Torre’s Yanks were 55-54 in NL Parks 1996-2007

Here’s Joe Torre’s record against NL teams… on the road… during his tenure as manager of the New York Yankees (includes both interleague play and WS):

    55-54 !!!

    That’s right… Fifty-Five and Fifty-Four… a smidge above .500!

SO, while leading the Yanks… Joe Torre was barely over .500 as a manager in NL parks (playing under NL rules)!!!

Take away the title years (1996-2000) and Torre’s record in NL parks (2001-2007) was terrible: 29-41!

In the World Series… Joe Torre’s Yanks are 10-7 in NL parks…

Take away the 1996 World Series… Yanks are 7-7 playing in NL parks in the WS.

Torre’s record in NL parks the last four seasons: 13-23

Torre’s record in NL parks the last two World Series appearances for the Yanks (both losses): 1-6.

Here’s the breakdown, year-by-year of Joe Torre’s record in NL parks (playing under NL rules)

    2007: 2-7
    2006: 4-5
    2005: 4-5
    2004: 3-6
    2003: 5-4 (1-2 in the World Series = 6-6 total)
    2002: 5-4
    2001: 5-4 (0-4 in the World Series = 5-8 total)
    2000: 6-3 (2-1 in the World Series = 8-4 total)
    1999: 4-5 (2-0 in the World Series = 6-5 total)
    1998: 6-2 (2-0 in the World Series = 8-2 total)
    1997: 1-2
1996: none (3-0 in the World Series = 3-0 total)

    In Total…

Yanks were 45-47 playing in NL parks in interleague play (1997-2007)…

Since interleague play began in 1997… Yanks are 5-6 in the season series against NL parks on the road.

This paints an ugly pitcher and does not bode well for Torre’s return to the NL… He has a hard time managing under NL rules… Hence the moniker CLUELESS JOE before he came to the Yanks.

  24. Born in da Bronx November 5th, 2007 at 7:00 pm

I wish Joe well. He is a great guy and a great manager and I bet he does well with the Dodgers.

And Matt the word is picture… not pitcher. A pitcher is a vessel containing a liquid or the guy throwing from the mound. If you are gonna knock Joe T at least spell the words correctly.

  25. Sherri November 5th, 2007 at 7:07 pm

I’m going to miss Joe, but I’m so excited about Girardi. I think he’ll do well. It will be interesting to see how Torre, et al, do with the Dodgers. I wish Torre and his family all the best.

  26. pat November 5th, 2007 at 7:43 pm

    Matt
Those of us old enough to remember know Torre was called Clueless Joe not because of his management skill but because the NY Press thought he didn’t know what he was getting into coming to work for George.

  27. Master Wangkee November 5th, 2007 at 8:00 pm

My source says LAA or LAD. I disagree.

I think the LA teams are being used as price drivers for Arod’s secret dream home: SanFran Giants.

  28. hmmm November 5th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

“Funny that 29 other teams in the league would’ve been thrilled about getting Joe Torre as a manager.”

you do know that Girardi was the Dodgers first choice, right?

  29. kills me to see this November 5th, 2007 at 8:58 pm

    i hate that he’s no longer a yankee. :(

  30. Joe Mama November 5th, 2007 at 9:08 pm

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this, but I’m pretty sure Scott Proctor plays for the Dodgers.

He better rest his arm or ask for a trade

  31. zgveritas November 5th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

    Joe Mama,

    You beat me to it.

I was just about to mention that this means Torre and Every Day Scott Proctor are reunited.

Wonder how Proctor feels about that. Knowing Torre I doubt there is any bad blood.

Proctors stats look okay for his time in the NL with the Dodgers. 3 wins 0 losses. Improvements in ERA & WHIP. Batting average 0.000 in zero at-bats.

  32. Yankees Rocks November 6th, 2007 at 12:41 am

I’m so sad…Don’t wanna let you go Joe T.

  33. Vinny 5743 November 6th, 2007 at 1:02 am

    Hmmm,

You do know the reason Girardi was offered the job first was so the Dodgers could save money on the Manager’s salary, right ? And also Torre still had a job at the time, right ? If Torre was going to stay with the Yankees, Girardi would have signed with the Dodgers and Torre would still be a Yankee, right ?

Fraggs, Take a look at the teams and when Torre played those other teams, like last year when the team was slumping at the time they played the NL teams and the team still got to the playoffs. Take a look at Torre’s early teams and the stellar players he had and get back to me.

I love how people twist the truth to suit their own agenda.
Torre is better off without fans like you guys.
