Recruiting of Pettitte commences
-
- November

Brian Cashman expanded a little on his thoughts about Andy Pettitte.
He thinks that if Pettitte had to decide now, he would retire. So the Yankees granting him time to make a decision only makes sense. Joe Girardi told us today that he has already reached out to Pettitte, a sign that the recruiting process is underway.
The Hendricks Brothers will make sure their guy gets paid. But Pettitte was emotionally swayed last season by Cashman and Joe Torre. It all started when he attended Torre’s charity dinner in November.
The Yankees can’t wait forever. But they can wait until Christmas and give their appeals time to work. If Pettitte had injury issues or hadn’t pitched well this season, he would be done. But he knows he can still pitch and he felt great all season. One more run with Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera will appeal to him. He also got close to Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes this season.
Joba is a Hendricks client, by the way. Think they might want Andy around influencing him?
This won’t get settled any time soon. But the Yankees know they have to exhaust every avenue to get the big lefty back.

Peter Abraham

Thanks for the info, Pete. Pettitte will come back because he knows the team needs him. They just need to make him feel loved (Jeter calling and texting) and show him respect (new & improved contract).
I think that Joba needs to turn the screws on Mr. Hendricks. Just a little.
And with that the full-court press begins. It worked last year for the Yankees, maybe it can work this offseason as well.
Joba is a Hendricks client?
Meaning he’s not a Boras client?
Best news I heard all day
And the Torre dinner is this Friday and you said he was coming so they can continue the process them. I am sure Jeter will be there.
Yankees interested in LHP Hitoki Iwase
WHO THE HELL IS HITOKI IWASE !!!
I believe Cashman didnt even know who the guy was when he was askedabout it directly yesterday in his mini presser (see peter’s audio from last night) by a Japanese reporter. he wasmore than clueless when his name was mentioned and not I am trying to hide something clueless.
More importantly, Brandon, does he like to pitch up in the zone?
Cash better have Jeter ready to do some sweet talking. Yanks are in some trouble if he does retire.
CaptainsCorner,
Now I don’t usually advocate extortion, but I think that Jeter needs to invite Andy to one of his parties…
I only heard part of the story on Mike and the mad puppy. But they said a player come forward for the mitchell investigation. That will be the basis of some of the report. Can anyone fill in the blanks.
And does he go through three or four hour-long cardio workouts on the days that he pitches?
But maybe if the Yankees get him, he could fill a void in the bullpen like Okajima did for Boston. The Yankees are bound to get lucky one of these days when signing a Japanese pitcher. The article said that he might not cost very much.
Better hope that Joe doesn’t try to recruit him for the Dodgers.

a current MLB player who has been vocal against steroid use has agreed to speak with the Mitchell investigation. They are currently not releasing the name of the player.
how did cash vote on the instant replay proposal? Didn’t George oppose that concept in the past?
Can Iwase be converted to a 3B?
Thanks pat.
They would sign that Japanese pitcher so Igawa has someone to hang out with in the minors. Thats all…
Pat,
That sounds an awful lot like Schilling.
Schilling??
Does Adrian Beltre now become more attractive since winning his first Gold Glove today? LOL.
That player could also be Boomer- David Wells.
I was going to suppose JOhn SMoltz but Schilling would love to have his name in this thing somehow as being a saviour lol
Could Pettitte be waiting to see if he is implicated in the Mitchell report?
No Yankees won Gold Gloves.
Schilling wouldn’t speak WITHOUT having his name released. He’d want to have a press conference, too.
And lets guess how many Red Sox players he will impicate. ZERO!!!
I don’t understand how Mitchell a member of the red sox board is allowed to run the investigation. Who is to say if Ortiz’s name shows up he won’t over look it.
Hitoki Iwase is the 32 (he turns 33 on Sunday) year old closer of the Chunichi Dragons. 1.97 Career ERA. Last year he had a 2.44 ERA, 7.62 K/9, 1.5 bb/9.
Rebecca,
That’s a good thing. Now we don’t have to hear how it’s a popularity contest. We also don’t have to hear about Jeter’s horrible defense ad nauseum.
Brandon,
Iwase is a lefty reliever who can pitch multiple innings. His best pitch is a slider.

how does David Wright win a gold glove ..LOL
thanks Passer-By I’m also watching him on youtube
Schilling was my first guess but probably too obvious. MadDod guessed Smoltz. Glavine might be a possibility because he’s a big union guy and has been outspoken.
The Gold Gloves are jokes. It’s insane when you analyze who won and why.
Given the history of Japanese pitchers on the Yankees over the years – I find it hard to keep going to that well.
“And the Torre dinner is this Friday and you said he was coming so they can continue the process them. I am sure Jeter will be there.”
Yeah but so will Torre. I love Joe but I have a hard time imagining him not being still a bit negative on the Yanks.
Good question, he isn’t that good of the third baseman.
Heard Joe will be wearing one of those new “Fire Randy Levie” shirts at the dinner.
Which Yankees do we think will be in the Mitchell Report, if any?
Hank will have has his “up yours ingrate” hat on
“They would sign that Japanese pitcher so Igawa has someone to hang out with in the minors. Thats all…”
wrong, he could be a very successful bullpen addition.
he is a free agent so no posting fee.
he is exactly the type of guy the yankees should be looking at.
“Given the history of Japanese pitchers on the Yankees over the years – I find it hard to keep going to that well.”
this makes sense.
the rumor about a player speaking to Mitchell might help in understanding this comment by Schilling on his blog:
Theo and I spoke early in the week about wanting to complete this before the exclusive period ended, and the GM meetings began, because we both thought there could be a scenario popping up that might make this less desirable. He has to run this team, and I needed to do what was best and right for my family. Allowing external influences to change our opinions of each other might have been an unavoidable strain neither side wanted.
The Yankees missed on Raul Mondesi. Perhaps they should stop going after Dominican players.
That makes no sense. As Hmmm said, Iwase is the type of guy the Yankees should look at.
Take a look at LH bullpen options around baseball. There aren’t any.
Suppose this guy gives the Yankees what Okajima gave the Red Sox.? If that happens, I’m sure people would be “somewhat” happy.
Ranking Japanese Pitchers
“By my count there are five Japanese pitchers who stand a good chance of jumping over to MLB for the 2008 season. I asked Aaron Shinsano and Jackson Broder of East Windup Chronicle to rank them for us and write a short description for each. Another knowledgable friend, Tak Iwanaga, also added some info below.
1. Hitoki Iwase – Iwase was on the hill for the tail end of last night’s perfect game, the Japan Series clinching victory for the Chunichi Dragons. The lefty closer has 40+ saves three years running with a career 1.91 ERA. Tops out at around 93 MPH, but has arguably the best slider in Japan. He’s starting to lose movement and velocity on his pitches, but is making up for it with very good control. A nice fit for the Okajima fetishist.”
This was posted on mlbtraderumors.com. This guy ranked him as the best pitcher available from japan this season. Apparently has a real good slider.
Paul Mondesi had actual MLB experience.
Which Yankees do we think will be in the Mitchell Report, if any?
Well Andy’s name has already surfaced. perhaps that’s whatthe “indecision” is all about.
If his name is in the report, don’t you think he would have taken the optioin?
Didn’t Giambi talk with Mitchell this year? Thought that was part of his punishment for telling the press he had used steriods in the past.
I respect Giambi for coming forward.
The Yankees have a significant lever to pull re: Pettitte…offer him more money either straight up or in the form of easily achieved incentive clauses.
