Winding down in Orlando
-
- November
- 6
Everybody is at dinner now here in Orlando. The Yankees had a big group headed by Brian Cashman and Joe Girardi. Scouting director Damon Oppenheimer came over from Tampa. Rob Thomson, Dave Eiland, Jean Afterman, etc.
The Tampa Trio will be getting stuck with a big check. But, hey, they can afford it.
I’m headed out myself. We’ll come back to the Hyatt later for drinks and to try and pick up on some more stuff. I don’t think I’ll have another update tonight but you never know.

Buy Cash a slew of drinks and see if you can get him some info outta him!
Yeah get Cash loaded see if he spills any beans!!
Pete,
This blog rules. I love the diligence.
If the Yankees were to make a trade that isn’t just a salary dump, who do you think is the most likely to go? Cano? Melky? Wang? Damon?
An update for the sake of updates. I LOVE it.
Still wish I was my brother in Orlando right now. !@@#!@ cold in Syracuse today, but that tends to happen in the winter.
Pete
Terrific fly-on-the-wall stuff. Very much appreciated.
Yeah Pete, enjoy Orlando tonight. I’m sure that it is much warmer there than it is where I’m at (Tennessee). I hate the cold!!
J-Dawg: It’s colder here.
Like, there were flurries here.
what did i do before this blog? i don’t even know.
thanks pete
Rebecca- Flurries! Well, it’s not quite THAT cold here. Just around 40 degrees right now. But I get cold when the temperature falls under 65!
Thanks for the coverage Peter.
My source just updated the Damon/Crede rumor. He says a ChiSox pitcher is involved. Considering the Yankees absence of lefty relievers, I’m guessing the pitcher is Matt Thornton.
Thanks again Peter and I’ll be sure to brush up on my Oliver Stone movie-watching. LOL.
Rebecca!
You’re living in Syracuse, it’s early November, and it’s too cold for you already??? Risking sounding like an old geezer telling one of those “When I was a kid I had to get up a 4AM to milk the cows, chop the firewood, deliver my newspaper route, then walk 13 miles to school in a 2-foot deep driving snowstorm, uphill & into the wind all the way, both ways” stories ….
When I was up there we had 18” of flurries overnight! And 18 degrees was balmy! C’mon, don’t be a wimp! The best is yet to come!
And that was in April!
Ever grilled on the bbq when it was 14 degrees below zero (no wind chill, but the wind was literally howling as well)? I have (in Vermont). Of course, I was institutionalized the next day.
I hope when Pete says “some stuff” he means some fine lookin’ ladies.
What happens in Orlando stays in Orlando.
i wwould rather have brian anderson be included, and then sign Iwase from japan
Just say no to Crede.
Matt Thornton would be packaged with Crede for Damon?
According to his player info on ESPN.com, among Thronton’s career stats are:
10-13 W-L
.249 BAA
4.41 ERA
Nothing special. Especially for a relief pitcher. Sounds like the kind of player who’d unknowingly face the unforgiving wrath of everyone posting on this blog whenever he makes an appearance.
If they package him in with Crede, he’d probably do more harm than good for the Yanks. Other than clearing some salary room for Damon or making the deal more financially balanced for the ChiSox, I don’t see the point in NY acquiring him.
All you poor guys up north. This is the reason I chose to go to college in Florida
Ranting Guy take what ever that guy says with a grain of salt. He is on the yesnetwork boards talking fake trades.
This Next Year … Yeah, we did a BBQ in a 20-degree snowfall up in Syracuse! Just like boy scout camp, plus TV, a keg and co-eds!
You probably got institutionalized because you did it in your shorts in weather cold enough to turn a penguin’s nuts blue!
Jen –
“Ah … I see” said the blind man.
The co-eds would have been nice.
They were
Maybe you would have thawed out faster.
Thanks Pete. I really appreciate your blog.
Have fun down there!
Pete, are you going to the Torre charity shindig?
Anyone here going?
Ranting Guy:
This is my senior year. Freshman year, spring semester, first day of class, the high was 0 F.
Sophomore year wasn’t different, last year I was abroad and it didn’t get much colder than 29 in London.
So it’s not that it’s necessarily cold, but more like it dropped 40 F overnight
Flurries here in Toledo tonight too. And, I just got mt BBQ tank filled three days ago. We grill all winter. I wonder who the Yanks would have to add to a package of Karstens, DeSalvo, Henn, and Igawa for Cabrerra from Florida. That’s a lot of young pitching prospects.
OK, this is off-topic but if I cant rant about it here, where can I rant about it?
How the (censored) does Moose get robbed in Gold Glove voting AGAIN?!? WTF man!! Johan Santana is a very good fielder, and I’m not saying he is undeserving but Moose is STILL the best fielding pitcher in the AL yet hasn’t won one since 2003? Ugh just UGH. Last year he had a perfect 1.000 fielding pct and still lost to Kenny Rogers and his .913 fpct. In fact in all the years Rogers has won it he has never once had an error-free season. Moose puts up perfect fpcts like it’s his job and he STILL can’t get any love!! This year he turned 2 more DPs and had only 2 fewer assists than Santana despite starting only 27 games to Johan’s 33. Yet still no GG despite how blatantly and disgustingly robbed he has gotten losing to Rogers the past few years. He should have gotten 3 GGs this year just for that blasphemy!!
Grrrr WHERE’S THE LOVE?!?
/rant
They just don’t like Mussina plan and simple.
Moose is a bit aloof. More than a bit, I guess. I have warmed to him over the years, but it could grate on other players.
everyone talking about the weather in Orlando – it’s not tooo hot here so don’t be too jealous lol
I mean it’s only dipping into the 50’s – but considering it’s been in the upper 80’s and 90’s up until the last few days it feels pretty damn cold lol
Yeah….remember how he (Mussina)whined and whined about going to Japan for the opener a few years back? He’s got a tough life.
I think Jeter should give Moose one of his Gold Gloves. It’s only right!
So who here watches House?
Yeah, Pete. Let us know if you get lucky…with any scoops.
Cold is college at Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY 3 hours north of Syracuse.
The upstate college group is in the house tonight. I went to Oswego, and 20 years later can still remember how cold it was with the wind gusts off Lake Ontario.
Potsdam?
Ow!
Heh, you guys want irony, get this:
I HATE the cold. I applied to Syracuse because I was applying to Newhouse—considered one of the top journalism schools in the country.
As you might imagine, I didn’t get into Newhouse. I got into regular Syracuse and then decided I had a bigger interest in medieval English history and creative writing, so I’ve stayed an Arts and Sciences kid.
So how am I spending my senior year?
Writing a Yankees blog.
Talk about full circle!
BBB: and furthermore, how the hell did DAVID WRIGHT get the gold glove for 3b in the NL?
He’s not even a very good fielder.
Matty and TClip SO better tie for the Cy Young
I went to college upstate-ish! Albany area. We had more ice storms when I was there than snow storms. Only got snowed in a few times.
So on ESPN before Gammons said the Marlins would trade D-Train and Cabrera if they got the right offers. D-Train is coming of a pretty crappy year, so I’m not sure how high his price would be. If Pettitte decides not to come back, I wonder if Cashman would consider it.
NJ: On Mike and the Mad Dog today (hey, I have to listen to something on my way home from work), they mentioned something about Dontrelle Willis being a throwin with Cabrera ala Lowell with the Beckett trade. I don’t know if it was them babbling, or if it was more truth.
Any thoughts on a possible Damon for Rolen swap?
LOve House, Rebecca. HL is The Man.
Trade idea:
The Tigers need a closer:
Farnsworth to Tigers for 3b Brandon Inge
Farnsworth contract: 08:$5.5M
Inge contract: 08:$6.2M, 09:$6.3M, 10:$6.6M
Yanks solve #B problem and get rid of ineffective Farnsworth.
Tigers get closer stop-gap and dump Inge contract. They also are now free to go for Rodriguez at 3B.
Yes Inge isn’t the second coming of Gary Gaetti or even Charlie Hayes but its a cheap way to fill in the 3B hole and dump Farnsworth at the same time. Also Inge is healthy and will cost the Yankees 19 Million over the next 3 years as opposed to a hurting Rolen who has 36 million left over 3 years. Inge can also catch in a pinch and he will be 31 in May.
I think Betemit is a better hitter than Inge. And if Inge is better, it wouldn’t be by enough to make it worth taking on his contract.
But if Rolen is healthy, he is much better than both guys. Then Betemit could also take part of that first base platoon. His bat is better than Phillips. So it could help both situations.
Rolen is owed 12 mil per year for the next 3 years
Damon is owed 13 million per year for the next 2 years
Inge is an even worse hitter than Crede, and a worse fielder.
Pete I am new to this blog, you are AWESOME
“But if Rolen is healthy”
Three surgeries in the last two years? Ick.
They’d have to take basically nothing in trade, or eat a lot of his money or both. Does he even want to play in NY? I know he doesn’t get along with LaRussa and wants to leave, but if the Yanks would have to sweeten the pot to get him to waive his clause to come here…I wouldn’t want to do that.
Most years, these November talks are for exec’s to get each other’s train of thought toward the big meetings in December when the real sparks fly for deals. Free agent signings set the stage for other deals.
Anyone watching the Contender finale, pretty good first round.
Well then maybe with the injuries the Yankees can get him without even giving up Damon. Just a couple of lower prospects. That way the Cards could get away from that contract. I guess it would be a salary dump for them. Spiezio can play 3B. They might be interested still. The Yankees can afford the risk. There’s nothing better available for giving up so little. If you want Cabrera you have to give up the young pitchers and Melky. And if Rolen gets hurt then Betemit will be the man. I’m comfortable with that.
Pete, you’re awesome, thanks so much.
Inge career stats:
msn.foxsports.com/mlb/playerStats?categoryId=85122
Not pretty. A 9 hitter. We don’t need A-Rod, but we need better than a 9 hitter to replace him.
Alright guys, quick trade question.
Whaddya think?
Here’s what I say…................ Ready?
First, for Johan, you offer Ian Kennedy, Chase Wright, Jeff Karstens, Damon, With Hunter poss gone they need a defensive CFand10 M of Damons remaining 2 years, $26 M pricetag. Yea or nay? Do you think its enough? They get two decent young pitchers, one high ceiling young SP and a suitable, stopgap CF for two years at $16M ($8M per) with the $10 kicked in. Sounds fair to me. Worse case scenario, maybe drop Damon from the deal and add Shelley Duncan.
THEN, for Miggy Cabrera, you send Alan Horne, Jose Tabata, Humberto Snachez, and Ross Olendorff, plus $5 M in cash b/c you know Beinfest and Loria are a couple of “whoo-ha’s” for cash, to quote ‘Ralphie from the Sopranos’. If needed, throw Melky into the deal.
The point id, never give up Hughes, Cano, or Joba.
That gives the Yankees a possible team of:
(figure a few freeagent signings if the Twins and Marlins demand mucho from the NYY’s for trades)
C Posada
1B Doug Mink, Giambi, poss Shelley if he survives trade time
2B Cano
3B Cabrera
SS Jeter
LF Damon (if still around and not traded)/platoon Matsui
CF Hmmm. Poss Melk-man?But if gone in a trade, I say Aaron Rowand for 4 yrs, $50 M, or Torri Hunter, 4yr/$65M
Rf Abreu
SP Johan
SP Joba
SP Pettitte
SP Hughes
SP Moose
BP Farnsworth
BP Ramirez
BP Rivera
BP Igawa
BP ?
BP ?
When you sign top-tier free agents you forfeit early draft picks to the former team of that free agent. I hihgly doubt the yankees would trade all those young guys as well as forfeiting more future draft picks – the farm would be bare. And the payroll would get insane again. Cabrera and Santana will need to be locked down with 20+ mill per year contracts for many many years. It’s not going to happen.
Re: Acquiring Dontrelle Willis
I think Cashman needs to focus his attention to acquiring a legitimate AL ace. The way I see it, there are only two ways to win the WS… is it takes either a really deep rotation to win the WS (NYY – 96,98-00; FL – 03; CHW – 05) or a rotation with either 1 or 2 aces (ARZ – 01; BOS – 04,07). I don’t know about you guys, but I would sleep much better at night with Santana making 2 starts per series.
You’re right about the necessary makeup of a WS winning rotation, Vin. I think Cashman is hoping that 2 of Hughes/Joba/Kennedy/Horne can become those shutdown aces. Or at least be good enough to give the Yankees that deep rotation when mixed in with Wang and Pettitte. The Yankee rotations have been terribly short in recent seasons, and without a dominant ace, which is mainly why they have lost in Octobers.
Shamus – don’t like it. With two trades, you’ve not only emptied the farm of its best pitching prospects, you’ve also tossed out the two upcoming position players closest to having an impact (Tabata and Duncan). The team is now older with unknown free agents in center and in the bullpen. All to obtain two “marquee” players, one of whom has a suspect work ethic.
Home growing these young players has taken a lot of hard work and patience. Throwing them out for a couple of possible all stars is “Old Big Stein” thinking.
shamus, the twins would spit in cashmans face and that may be too much for miggy
and i second the rolen nomination
Oh, also I almost forgot—you’re going to have to extend Santana right away with major $$$. Better to wait a year and spend the same $$$ then to get him as a free agent. Then the team still has a future (I’m about the five hundredth person to point this out, I know).
I agree with Jeff. There are several attractive starting pitching free agents next offseason. If the Yankees even feel that they need to go that route after watching the young guys this season, then they can do that without giving up all the young guys, which is what they would have to do now to land Johan.
“Inge is an even worse hitter than Crede, and a worse fielder.”
Inge is a fantastic fielder.
i am not saying that the yankees shuld go after him, but he is one of the best defensive 3Bman in the majors.
“First, for Johan, you offer Ian Kennedy, Chase Wright, Jeff Karstens, Damon, With Hunter poss gone they need a defensive CFand10 M of Damons remaining 2 years, $26 M pricetag. Yea or nay? Do you think its enough?”
it’s not enough.
it’s basically Kennedy and Damon for Santana. i don’t think that is a fair trade.
wright and karstens are non-factors. they have little to no trade value.
Ah go get wasted Pete you deserve it.
pete,
wang had a lousy playoff series?
He pretty much lost the series for the yanks. He was their ace this yr and he pitched like he was kei igawa. I dont think wang got enough blame for completely blowing up in the playoffs this yr by the media. I dont get why so players get destroyed by the media for no good reason. Others get a pass for playing horribly.
It’s probably because Wang is a boring guy and the media doesn’t care much about him. But if they can write stories about more controversial guys like Giambi or ARod where people will be interested.
And really Jeter and Posada should have been nailed more for their terrible performances as well.
Dontrelle Willis would get destroyed in the AL.
It’s doesn’t seem like we would be able to bear the cost of a Miguel Cabrera trade.
Im starting to realize that there is really no one the yanks are going to get to replace arod if they dont re-sign him. There is no one even remotely as great on the FA list this off season except yankees. Cash has no balls so the yanks most likely wont make a big trade for a third baseman. And he just siad he wont trad e hughes or kennedy so we arent getting anyone good without them in a trade. If we are lucky, we will overpay horribly for Mike Lowell and he will prolly end up having a mediocre yr. If we are not lucky, cash will end up signing pedro feliz or some joke like that. Either way, we lose about 100 rbis and 100 runs that we had last season. Crede for damon is a horrible move for us even if crede is better than someone like feliz he isnt much better. I can think of two ways to solve this conundum: One, the yankees swallow their pride and eventually sign arod (with the mets and sox prolly not among the competition which is NOT surprising, the price shouldnt be outrageous or no more ridiculous than Lowell will cost for his talent.) Two, we replace melky with a solid centerfielder with some power putting him on the bench and we find a decent first baseman with some pop as well. Otherwise, the team just cant possibly be as solid offensively as last season. And despite contrary opinions, our offense which was arod for the first half of the season pretty much got us to the playoffs. Without arod, we dont win the wildcard. Just somethin to keep in mind before deciding to announce to the world that u never want arod back in NY – i wish the steinbrenners could think before they speak.
Dude, we do not want to tell Pete to get wasted. Then he’ll have a nasty hangover and not be able to do all the good reporting he does!
The cost of Miguel cabrera would prolly be Hughes or kennedy and Melky and some minor league prospect. Even if we made that trade, we could sign Torri Hunter or Andruw Jones or Aaron Rowand to replace Melky. And we would still have chamberlain and either hughes or kennedy. Im not even really sure how good kennedy will be in the long run anyway. He may be an ace and he may be a third starter. We would have four signed starters and pettitte prolly on the horizon. We would have to sign some sort of FA starter which is not in abundance but there are some. And with cabrera instead of arod, we saving about 35 million dollar per yr in 2007. Although we would have to pay the marlins as well.
Dave
No one is saying that Arod is not an awesome player during the regular season but he seems to just disappear in the postseason. When is the last time he got even 1 RBI in the postseason. I think it has been several years.
ARod hit a homer in game 4. That’s an RBI.
Rollin
I stand corrected. Thank you.
oh brotha…
You’re right the Yankee offense will no longer be the best in baseball without ARod. Posada will probably not be as awesome either. But it will still be a pretty good offense. But the best way to make up for that is imrpoved pitching. If the Yankees aren’t forced to throw out Igawa/DeSalvo/Clippard/Karstens/Rasner/Henn/Wright for like 30 or 40 starts again next year then the pitching should improve by default. As long as Hughes and Joba are at least league average (hopefully they will be a lot better) and everyone else is healthy the pitching should be better. Andy and Mo returning is part of that assumption too.
Okay, then we give what we can for Santana and resign him? And fill 3B with what we can, a salary dump (and risk) like Rolen that will cost us nothing, a la Abreu, or we take another health risk on Crede, for minimal prospects. Sounds skeptical. Another salary dumo idea being tossed around is Eric Chavez. I dunno… None of them really appeal to me except Crede. More on that.
Then who for Johan? A FAIR package of Ian Kennedy, Melky Cabrera, Ross Ohlendorf, and cash? Poss one more lower tier procpest, a Shelley Duncan or Alan Horne? Heck, toss in Humberto Dirty Sanchez, he’ll be healthy by then. Whatever it takes, minus Wang, Cano, Joba or Phil Franchise.
That leaves a rotation (depending on Pettitte) of Johan, Joba, Hughes, Mussina and Wang (not in that order, of course – plus options like Igawa, Karstens, poss (hopefully) Pettitte, poss a one year incentive guy like Bartolo Colon? Do you feel comfortable with that rotation? I like the top four, Johan, Joba, Wang and Hughes, espcially if Pettitte slots in fifth.
And think if we lose Melky to get Johan, then we go get Rowand or Hunter (I’d steer clear of Andruw) to fill CF, with Damon and Matsui splitting time in LF and Aboo-boo in RF. Matsui and Damon could also batlle Sterombi for time ay DH too, maybe, with Shelley Duncan, who I see at 1B next year.
Rowand for prob 4 years, $48, and Torii would prob want 4 years, $60. Just guessing. If Eric Byrnes got 5 for $50…from the D-Backs, no less.
Sounds expensive, especially when it comes time to resign Johan to an extension, but then realize AFTER 2008, we lose Pavano’s final $10M, Giambi’s $20M, Mussina’s $11M, and Abreu’s $16M, a total of $57 mil. Now some will go towards rising players salaries such as Cano and Wang, but with Jeter, Posada and Rivera locked in (presumably), plus the influx of youth, they could spin that extra cash into a monster deal for Johan, 6 years, $150-$180. Na still ahve some left over for a new CF if we lose cheapo Melky for Johan and have to go after Torii Hunter or Aaron Rowand.
For third base though, I say they get a short term stopper, a Crede, a Beltre, 2 years, $24M. Someone that won’t cost too many prospects, like a Cabrera, or Atkins. And if takes four years or more to lure Lowell away from the Sox, then let him go elsewhere. I question his abilities away from RH friendly Fenway. And his decline phase is knock-knocking on the clubhouse door.
I bet the O’s would love to dump Tejada’s salary, 2 years , $26M.Why not, yeah, he’s been unruly and misreable in Baltimore, but get him back on a winning team with batting order protection and move him to 3B and watch out. Could be a monster at Yankees Stadium.
Just no one with more than three years left. As a general rule, you don’t take on a salary dump trade with more than three years on it, a la Rolen (3yr/$36M), two words SCARY SCARY.
Thats what I say, revised.
Matsuzaka had to show up ARod though by getting 2 RBIs in a World Series game.
Tejada is an interesting possiblity. I wonder if the Orioles are even willing to talk trades with the Yankees though.
Shamus, that trade scenario is the type of things the Yankees did back in the late nineties/early oo’s that completely wiped our farm system. We can’t afford to do that now.
A-Rod getting 2 RBI’s would require someone to be on base when he hit and this year that was in short supple.
Tejada is not an option here, that would not only be more bad PR but a reverse to what method they are implanting to this team.
P.S. Yanks will offer arbitration to Arod
what the heck is short supple?
I’m sorry, I know it’s a typo, but it has me thinking of certain parts of the female body, and, well, LMAO!
why does everyone in this blog keep talking about the yanks getting santana this off season? I just dont see it. Why would the twins give him up now if they can keep him until september, try to sign him and if they cant by then, trade him for top prospects? What exactly are they losing by doing that?
Just because our pitching MAY get better next season, we can lose our best player and the best offensive player in baseball, not replace him and be fine. And it is a big may considering pettitte may not be coming back (our second best pitcher last season) and we are relying on three rookies to be good and healthy all season. I dont think so. Rollin your logic is somewhat flawed.
If they offer arod arbitration, is their no possibility of re-signing him?
Why isnt tejada an option? He has two yrs left on his contract and he is miserable on the orioles because they never win. He is one of a handful of players that can potentially replace arods production. Another great idea besides Miguel cabrera.
whoever plays 3B – make sure they can field first, hitting is a bonus. Losing Arod hurts the offense but we can still score 800 to 900 runs. If these defense is tighter and the pitching better we will be fine.
Damon LF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Posada C
Matsui DH
Cano 2B
Gimabi/Phillips/Duncan DH/1B
Betemit/????? 3B
Cabrerra CF
That lineup is capable of scoring in many different ways. Some power, hit and run, SB’s, lot of doubles and triples and good OBP’s. The key is Gimabi – will he show up this year? Also Matsui’s knee better be right. I’d love to see what Shelley Duncan can do with 300 to 400 AB’s.
I think when 2008 is all said and done we will look back and realize we needed a lot more PITCHING then a 3B slugger
I don’t think my logic is flawed. There is no way you can replace ARod’s production. Posada played way over his head last year as well. The pitching will HAVE to be better for the Yankees to make the postseason. Cashman even said that the Yankees “need” Andy Pettitte so it’s clear that he knows that relying on 3 young guys is a big gamble. There’s no question about it. But they might just have to do that if Andy retires. Do you have any more realistic choices? The reason Cashman isn’t trading these guys is because he wants to use them on the major league roster.
Arod arbitration…
Careful, he may accept. Boras clients have been known to do that when they cant score the multiple year deal they want. However in Arod’s case I doubt he would accept unless it was a way for him to get back to NY – assuming he didn’t want to leave in the first place. However, he just came off his career year and his value will never be higher so unless no one can step up with at least 5y 130mil I don’t think he would accept arbitration.
The Twins won’t be able to trade Santana after next year’s deadline, which is probably July 31st. They have more leverage now than they will then, so they can get a better return for him now.
most likely not
He is one of a handful of players that can potentially replace arods production. Another great idea besides Miguel cabrera.
not eversince the steroids investigations started, plus he is a playoff block head, Bill buckner performances , we’re talking baserunning mistakes w/ sac flies in the playoffs, or brain freezes, go ahead and check I remember
Tejada’s name has also been rumored by the latin community to be in the Mitchell report
The Yankees don’t lose either way by offering him arbitration, now that he is a free agent. If he accepts then we have maybe the best offense in baseball again next year without giving him the crazy 300 million dollar deal. The arbiter would probably give him 1 year 30 million. If he declines then we get draft picks if he signs elsewhere.
Pete-
By my reckoning, Game2/BugFriday was a month ago exactly & every reader of the Blog knows you’ve been working your a** off each of those days; you’ve earned your drink.
BTW, you’ve let readers in on some of your other “likes”, what do you drink?
if Alex turns down arbitration we get two first rd. picks, one a sandwhich pick I think
if he accepts, welcome HOME SUCKER !!!!
I sent Peter a question by email tonight at 7PM. I was hoping for an answer in 2-3 days. I got an email from Peter at about 8PM. I was amazed. Thank you Peter for the answer. By the way you are a workholic!!!
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/07/sports/baseball/07chass.html?ref=baseball
Straw poll of some mlb execs…lol on Bavasi of the Mariners.
BWAAAHAHAHAHA
How do the twins have more leverage now that at the trading deadline this season? All the teams in playoff contention will be competing for him during the season.
Rollin, your logic is there is nothing they can do except live without arod and not sign anyone to replace his production. Either way there rotation is their rotation. Whatever pettitte decides its pretty much just his choice. If santana or kazmir or whoever is on the trading block the yanks will go after them but i dont think that is happening this off season. The only thing the yanks have control over is who they sign or trade. I think they need to sign or trade someone to bat righty and hit cleanup and play third. They shouldnt stick betemit at third or pick up some joke like feliz and call it a day. They should make a move. You cant lose the best offensive player in the sport and make it up with rookie pitching. They need to sign someone or multiple ppl to try to replace the production. Thas cash;s job to make the team better NOT WORSE.
Tejedas name being rumored in the mitchell report is no reason not to trade for him. Clemens was rumored to have taken rois at one point. Pettitte was as well. Its all heresay.
Arod is not opting out without even talking to the organization and then, accepting arbitration. I dont think that would ever happen.
Does anyone have any idea how betemit stacks up as a 3B fielding wise, I didn’t get to see him there in enough games to really get an idea…if he is adequate id rather have him there than crede or inge and maybe beltre too. He’s not a bad option at the plate
Pete’s earned himself a few drinks, methinks.
There’s a difference between a few drinks, though, and getting out and out wasted =D
a David Wright from this season
Yeah, the Yanks really need to keep collecting over 30 OF’s. That’s the way to go…
Dave:
I agree with you that AROD is tremendous and will be missed.
You keep referring to him as ” the best offensive player in the sport”.
He was the best, clearly in 07.
He has peers in the game. Pujols, Ramirez, Ortiz, Guerrero to name a few.
I do think the Yankees can upgrade at 3B. I offered an idea of trading for Scott Rolen earlier in this thread. But when all is said and done, if the pitching is injured again or Hughes/Joba don’t perform well, the Yankees probably won’t make the postseason regardless of whether the 3B is Betemit or Tejada or Rolen.
I’d rather get Edwin Encarnacion than Rolen
thanks peter for your great blog
i’m in china now and business and thanks to you i’ll miss nothing regarding the off season excitement
The Twins have more leverage now with a Santana trade. Let’s say they wait till the end of July and are a few days from the deadline. They might just have to accept whatever the best offer on the table is at the time, even if it isn’t worth Santana’s value, otherwise he just walks in free agency after the season is over. They aren’t officially desperate to get rid of him now so they don’t have to accept a sub par proposal. If they trade him now it will surely be for a super awesome package.
Also if he sustains any type of serious injury before the deadline it might kill his trade value. The time to trade him is now.
I’m in Tampa right now, its a freezing 63 degrees
man Atoine Wright stepped it up tonight for the Nets again
and Balkmania saved my Knicks tonight
Boooo! Peja and Chris Paul stomped on my Lakers.
Yankees don’t need Johan or Dontrelle. They have the pitching they need and would be a waste of money and draft picks to go after Johan. Yankees have been good in getting young pitching through trades and draft picks.
Let the team make itself and get away from the whole buying thing they have been doing and getting them nowhere. Santana is a great pitcher, but is he worth the cost and would he do well in New York away from the laid back atmosphere of MN?
mel, the Lakers are done sorry
I know their are players that are comparable to arods abilities but none of them are a free agent. We could only trade for someone like cabrera or tejeda to try to replace him.
rolen has been injured and awful two of the last three seasons. I know he is only 32 or 33 but he seems to have become an injury plagued player. I wouldnt give much if anything do get him and the cardinals will want something good its not worth it. I think the twins would rather have another season with santana as their ace and trade him by the deadline when everyone is competing for the playoffs then trade him now. maybe not but i dont hear many rumors recently about a possible santana trade
i didn’t read this whole thread, but just wanted to say that i think Hmmm is a great contributor to this blog and knows a lot about baseball. i have no idea if he can play CF though….

none taken. in slow pitch softball, CF IS my natural position, but i’m not sure how that would translate to the major.
i’m guessing not well.
