and by the way, maybe if bernie would have imposed his will by bearing down and taken a few pitches we would have won that game.

so let's dismiss will, traits you admit exist in O!Neill,
because Bernie pops up on the 1st pitch. It's all part of the game and life, there are good traits and bad, why dump on the good ones. Give me a gritty, gutty team that won't quit with timely hitting and decent pitching and you can win. I don't care about all the numbers and stats.

oh yeah .. and as far as 'will' ..?

does anybody remember game 5 of the 97 playoffs (against cleveland) ..
... and we were down to our final out ..

paul o'neil came up and ripped the ball ... the man on hobbled knees dug in with everything he had and found a way to second base - almost sliding past the bag, and clinging on with as much determination that i have ever seen... one of my personal defining moments of o'neils career ..

and then ... even with ALL THAT WILL and DETERMINATION ...

Bernie came up..

and typical bernie ... first pitch swinging - he popped out to end the game.

... now, i ask you..

... we never made it to the world series that year, but what good did Paul O'neil's grit, will and determination get us that day?

this is baseball ... it takes much more then one mans 'will' to win ANYTHING!

this might not be as crazy as it seems ..

but ...

what about the idea of signing Bartolo Colon and have him be the setup man for rivera? - assuming rivera returns.

it's something that could potentially keep colon a bit healthier and steer him towards a new role in his career.

... haven't heard this anywhere, so there's no juice, but i still think it's something to consider.

ND Yank:

RE: A-Rod and the Aaron Award no show

I believe that the NL winner managed to get there. If A-Rod is bored of winning awards maybe he should just tell the sponsors ahead of time that he doesn't need anymore of them. Otherwise it's a simple matter of having the class to be there. Being baseballs' best player comes with some impact on your schedule.

DHC,

What all I read on these two was that it was a great dislike in a personal level. I have read that and heard it more than several times. But who knows if the media wanted to make it more of a rivalry.

Back to the Matsui-Ichiro question, what I read (too long to remember the source) was that in Japan they were the stars of the two major opposing teams, sort of like the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry but on a national level, and were fierce opponents, rather than personal enemies.

Marc -

The '69 Miracle Mets had an awesome pitching staff. You have to assume that all athletes have the will to win.

And it's not semantics. If you don't see the difference, you don't see the difference, and nothing I say is going to change the way you see things.

Reggie singlehandedly won that game and therefore the series. Saying he willed it is just another way to say he was a clutch performer.
