(Here’s Joe Torre and the person he has counted on for love and support all these years. Also pictured is Ali Torre, Joe’s wife)

A few other tibits from the Safe At Home Gala:

Crusty old Don Zimmer was there and had nothing but praise for Joe Girardi. “Bet on it, he’ll do a great job,” he said.

A-Rod must have trouble with voice mail. Joe Torre said he tried to call him and never got a call back. So that’s Hank, Hal, Cashman, Cano, Damon and now Torre. I wonder if his wife gets a call back? Maybe she just shows him her shirt.

Torre said he would keep his home in Westchester and hold the dinner in Manhattan again next season. His charity will be opening an office in Los Angeles. “We want to take the message national,” he said.

Bruce Springsteen and his wife walked by and waved but didn’t talk to the reporters. I tried assorted ways to weasel my into the dinner to hear Bruce and failed miserably. He was scheduled to play two or three songs and I suspect Bernie was going to play with him.

Bob Costas was the master of ceremonies and Billy Crystal was there as well.

Ned Colletti of the Dodgers was in the house. Brian Cashman was not. Cash had to watch his kids because his wife was out of town.

The Japanese media horde was on hand to see Hideki Matsui and he blew them off. Godzilla is having his knee surgery on Wednesday, I am told by my Japanese friends.

That’s about it after a cold and rainy night.
