Bernie and Bruce rock the house

dscf0075.jpgThe good people at Backstreets.com posted a report on Bruce Springsteen’s performance at the Safe at Home Gala last night.

Bruce did a cover of “California Sun” with special lyrics for Joe Torre. That was followed by “Working on the Highway” and a special song he wrote about the Yankees that he joked would be on his next record.

“Thunder Road” was next followed by “Bobby Jean” and “Dancing in the Dark.” Bernie Williams than joined Bruce on stage for “Glory Days.”

Bruce is an actual Yankees fan and played baseball as a kid. The E Street Band also had a softball team back in the day. Over the years, I’ve seen him in clubs like the Stone Pony with a Yankees cap on.

It’s a great night when Bruce and baseball come together, especially for a good cause. Too bad he didn’t do “The Ties That Bind” for Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera.

Did they do “The Rising?” I love that song!

    Bruce does New Jersey proud.

    Funy Story–

I run a bar, and sometimes if someones sick, I have to bartend shift.

I had a kid in the bar the other night say ‘Bernie who?’ to me, a jack-arse all of 21 years old, when I said toa friend that I was sad that Burn Baby Burn wasn’t patrolling CF anymore.

Made me feel old. Then his comment made me feel like punching him four times in the head for being a ‘bombers fan’ as he put it, but not know who Bernie Williams was…

“Oh, he was the center fielder before Damon. I thought it was Bobby Crosby.”

I could have killed him. Would have gladly done the few years in the clink to rid the world of someone that stupid.

Said he just started watching the Yankees this past year….

The utter horror of it all…

Loved the video on backstreets. Was that Mrs. Torre letting out the whoop when he sang “Big boss man can kiss my ….

Believe it or not: the New York Times is reporting that both Torre and Bernie are speculating an idea of Bernie returning this season and Play for the Dodgers…! (New York Times).

  5. Derek "The GIDP Machine" Jeter -- record holder for the most GIDP in 2nd half of season

Good!!!! Hopefully they can find a way to send Jitter to Dodgers too. This winter is a perfect time to get rid of this generation of losers who have nothing left in the tank.

  6. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Bernie in Dodger blue would be as wrong as Mattingly in Dodger…

    …oh wait…

  7. tonyb

So Bernie patrols center field at Yankee Stadium for almost 15 years and when his exceptional career is over(maybe), he jams with the Allman Brothers and the Boss.

Bernie my man, you have lived my dreams. Frankly, I’m glad that someone did, because I’ve got good dreams. Now, complete the trifecta and marry Charlize Theron.

    You go Bernie!

  8. asburyboss

I heard Posada made a special request of “Price You pay” he sent it out to Cashman

  9. Torre, Torre, Torre

I wonder if Torre will lobby Pettitte for Dodger Blue ?

  10. Ducky Bent

Shamus why would it make you feel old? I mean Bernie played in 2006 – same year that Bubba Crosby played. It’s not that it was a lifetime ago.

That 21 year old just didn’t know anything about baseball, period, even calling Crosby “Bobby.”

  11. Ducky Bent

Bernie and Bruce. Two legends past their prime. ;)

  12. BBB endorses Beltre for '08 3b

Thanks for the great reports Pete! If anyone comes across a vid of the duet with Bernie, PLEASE share!!

here is a “Torre-edition” of “California Sun”

    http://s221.photobucket.com/al.....CF0037.flv

  14. Torre, Torre, Torre

Key lyric of Bruce’s “California Sun”: “nobody is gonna second guess who I am play’n”

Yup, that’s a perfect description of the blase fan interest in LA.

  15. Todd

how bout a Torre rendition of California Dreaming????

  16. Shamus

Didn’t the days of Bernie, Justice and Shane Spener seem so innocent? Then…. my favorite…”who are you, Karim Garcia?” from Pedro’s famous ’sit under a fig tree’ interview.

Ahh the good old days. Since then,a load of crap, fools like Giambi, Sheffield, Damon, A-Rod…Randy Johnson, Kevin Brown bitchin aout his family flying first class being a top perk in his contract! Where did the heart of this team go? It died with the loss of Paul O’Neill, Scott Brosius, Chuck Knoblauch, etc.

    ……

Shamus said: “I could have killed him. Would have gladly done the few years in the clink to rid the world of someone that stupid. Said he just started watching the Yankees this past year…. The utter horror of it all…”

But everyone starts out ignorant, and we were all new fans once, and had to begin at the beginning. I like to see youngsters just discovering the world of interest in baseball and the Yankees that can take years to master and can last a long lifetime.

Don’t kill ‘em off Shamus before they get ‘good enough’ to talk baseball with the rest of us!

  18. Harry

    Gr8 vid! Thanks!

  19. Harry

Hey, this is gr8! i can post from my mobile phone! The Lohud Yankees Mobile Blog!

  20. Winfield killed my seagull

Too much Bruce Springsteen already……There, I said it!

  21. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

You don’t live in Jersey, do you?

  22. J-Dawg

I know that it’s important for the Yankees to stay in the present and to not get too caught up in nostalgia, but it would be nice if they were able to set aside one day for Bernie next season. It would be a welcome sight to see Bernie get another ovation and for #51 to take its place amongst the other retired numbers.

    Rebecca:

Just got back in and was checking the blog. Sorry the GRE experience wasn’t better for you.

Buck up, kid. 2d time’s the charm, tomorrow’s another game. (Who aces it the first time anyway?)

  24. Brandon (I want Arod but fire Boras first, please land me a Kazmir)

and the Nets had to pick tonight to lose too ..damn :(

  25. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Heh, those are relatively minor things.

I saw a mouse in the kitchen.

  26. Brandon (I want Arod but fire Boras first, please land me a Kazmir)

in NY we have rats :D

  27. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Dude, I’m in Syracuse. I’m in NY as well =P

  28. Brandon (I want Arod but fire Boras first, please land me a Kazmir)

even though I’m not a Nets fan your coach Frank really pisses me off on his use of Antoine Wright and Sean Williams, he’s holding the kids back for Malik Allen and Jason Collins. I actually blame Collins for tonight’s loss they were good until brought him back in. LOL

Rebecca next Nets game you go to throw a paper ball at LF have it say “Stop playing Jason Collins !” :)

  29. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Brandon–I would, but the seats I usually get are on the opposite side of the court!

    :-D

  30. Jeff

Anybody catch Jorge sitting in the 2nd row of the Cotto-Mosley fight next to Billy Crystal? Hopefully Billy spent the night saying “resign…..resign……resign”

  31. Brandon (I want Arod but fire Boras first, please land me a Kazmir)

I still can’t believe Cotto won, he flatout beat down Mosley but I can’t believe he was that quick

  32. Jennifer congrats JOE G- Now bring Jorge back!

Gives me a reason to watch the replay on HBO, if it is on. Hopefully you are right and Billy talks him into coming back. Not that he should have to be talked into it.

  33. saucy

    Jason Collins rules…
