Being a person who does quality control work for a living, I know all about sample size. Using 100% of Francisco Cervelli’s professional at bats, including Winter Ball, as a sample size he has hit one home run per every 109.5 at bats (4 home runs in 438 at bats). Is that an accurate enough sample size for you?

As for power being the last tool to develop,I’m fully aware that is the norm. However,in an interview on scout.com Cervelli labels himself a “contact hitter”.

The very reason the Yanks are trying to convert Cervelli to become a catcher because they don’t have many catching prospects in their system. Prior to 2007,he was a 3rd baseman and shortstop.

Yeah I think if we have to overpay Jorge now b/c of Cashman’s mistake in the spring. I really think Jorge offers a lot of intangibles that make him worth more than the “market price” for a good catcher, even at his age. Yankees really can’t afford more personnel disaster at this point. If they need to overpay Jorge by $5-10mill to stop the bleeding, they need to just suck it up.

Dee- I think we agree. Overpay for Jorge, considering he’s been underpaid in baseball terms, just give us some flexibility in the 4th year.

And if anyone says “you don’t pay blah blah dollars for a back up,” I just might scream.

All this for one more year at extra $13-15mil instead of the $23mil for Jason. I think there’s a difference here.

One of the main reasons Giambi signed with us, instead of staying with his brother in Oakland, was Big Stein offer an additional year at $23 million. Oakland took a lot of heat, but in the end, they lucked out by not caving into an inflexible contract.

When Jorge signs, can we celebrate by getting an edit button? we need one real bad.
