You may recall Sam Borden, the former Yankees beat writer for the Daily News. He now works as a columnist for the paper in Jacksonville, Fla.
Sam also hosts a radio show at 10 a.m. on Sundays and we taped an interview earlier this week. His show streams on 1010XL.com.
So check it out at 10 a.m. The topic was using instant replay in baseball.

Ooh! Will do if I am awake! (don’t look at me like that. G-d invented Sunday for two reasons: sleeping as late as humanly possible, and homework!)
DadinIowa—but, you know, the Red Sox ARE kind of like a religion to some…
(obviously the above poster has never watched The Daily Show...)
I deleted all the weird comments (which were all from the same person). Sorry about that.
Thanks Pete
It doesn’t appear as though anything will happen with Jorge or Mo until some time next week.
Cashman made a mistake not signing both of them in st. Probably could have gotten both of them done at 3/36 now it will cost him a whole lot more.
couldn’t find the link for the audio. But we can’t be mad at them for keeping silent at the dinner, its not a baseball function its for charity, there class act guys, so can’t expect anything less. Let them take their time, they’ll make the right decision.
Joel Sherman at the Post says the Yankees have some non-Cabrera sized options for 3d base: The Cards’ Scotty Rolen, The Brewers’ Bill Hall, Pirate Freddy Sanchez and, tied for fourth, Morgan Ensberg/Ty Wigginton/Wes Helms.
http://www.nypost.com/seven/11112007/sports/yankees/third_watch_870240.htm?page=3
Bill Hall does look like an interesting option, especially if relief help might be the cost of getting him.
Daily news revisited an impotrant stat about Arod in postseason.Since 2004 he’s had 38 runners on base while at the plate and he(Arod) is 0-27= a no hitter folks! How does Boras explain that to a new sucker team owner in waiting to buy all the Arod hype ?
Yankees may want to pass on Scott Rolen he has a bad sholuder and back and isn’t durable for the season, can we say Giambi, also this ia a salary dump for the cards.Scott hates Larussa that’s the real reason the cards want him gone, for team chemistry.
warm and fuzzy:
Yeah, I’d probably pass on Rolen too. But Hall is 27 and can play CF, has a history of a lot more pop than Betemit and doesn’t coast anywhere near as much as Cabrera, Tejada, Rolen, etc.
And as for the Lupica piece about Rod in today’s paper, it’s interesting to me that Lupica never holds back when he writes, fearing neither friend nor foe, yet he expects Boras to pull his punches and not go all out for A-Rod. If Loopy keeps writing things like that, I may have to defend both A-Rod and Boras. (Better idea: I’ll have some more coffee instead).
Too early to deal with Lupica!
I love Sanchez, yet everyone digs the Longball, so he is probably not an option.
Don’t know if I’ll be able to catch the radio chat regarding instant replay.
I just cannot wrap my head around it for Baseball.
From the little I’ve read, it would initially be used for boundary issues (HRs, fair/foul etc.)
To me, the most crucial calls in Baseball involve safe/out.
It works so well in Football because of all the issues of posession, time constraints and such.
The beauty of Baseball is in its lack of time constraint and in its organic pace.
Not sure if replay is needed to encroach on that.
Plus, there will be issues as to camera placements, number of cameras etc.
Nfl games are all brodcast on an equal basis.
I don’t see all MLB games having uniform access to replay.
Also, TBS was not up to the task with regards to camera angles in the Cleveland series. We’re still waiting for the proper replay of Damon’s HR down the line.
Bill Hall is intriguing because he might produce some nice power numbers, but Freddy Sanchez might be a better option. Sanchez is a really good defender and a solid situational hitter. I would try to acquire him. I’m actually a big fan of Edwin Encarnacion and Chase Headley.
With A-Rod stranding 38 runners in 27 at bats in the post season, it’s only a small sample of what he’s done in the regular season only with 162 games in which to strand runners.
Joe Torre never required A-Rod to do small things with runners on to keep a rally going such as a bunt, hit to the right side to move runners over, or just dump a little flare hit over infielders. Always the long ball and pitchers knew he’d either hit it out or fail which was the case more often than not. Advantage: pitcher.
All A-Rod will do is more of the same the closer he gets to home run records. Doing the small things to help his team win are out of the question. His stolen bases will also diminish as he gets closer to individual records. He won’t want to take a chance on getting hurt as he gets older.
Not your prototypical team guy.
What exactly was the “minor” shoulder surgery sanchez had in september? I don’t recall the details. It wasn’t minor enough to wait til november…
Good points, D-Train.

E-ROC:
Thanks. I like that website.
It’s difficult to imagine why Mariano Rivera would want to see his restaurant in New Rochelle do less business. It would seem odd to have him pitching in another city while the restaurant loaded with Yankee items sees fewer customers. Mo will be back and Metalicca’s Enter Sandman will be heard at the Stadium when he comes out of the bullpen.

Davidoff in Newsday today,
“In return for Santana, the Twins likely will ask for a package centered on second baseman Robinson Cano, a person familiar with Minnesota’s operations said yesterday.”
Goes on to say Minnesota needs offense more than pitching because they have their own young arms. Aren’t afraid of Cano being arbitration eligible because of money they would save on Santana and Hunter.
If thats the Case Then Would You trade Robby Cano and Cabrera to get Santana? Then ask to negotiate an extension with Johan so we dont lose him to Free Agency.
Or is the trade of the CC boys too much?
Maybe Cano and S.Duncan and a low A pitcher?
Looks like Freddy Sanchez is better to stay at 2B,especially if he had minor surgery to his arm recently.
I would be hesitant to make the trade. Yankees are so narrow in position player depth that giving up Cano and Cabrera sends them out to sign free agents who are going to be older and more expensive yet again.
That’s a deal killer for me. No way I trade Canò
You don’t need to replace 100% of A-Rod, but replacing even 60% of A-Rod plus 100% of Cano? I guess it depends on how much they value the opportunity to lock up Santana as a Yankee for the rest of his career (while keeping Santana away from others). From that perspective, maybe it’s worth it. They would, however, have to do their best LA Angels imitation next year to be competitive. With Girardi, maybe that’s not a crazy idea either.
Let’s see. The Yankees are already missing a heck of a lot of offensive power with A-Rod being gone. Not to mention the defense taking a shot. They are also without a catcher right now, meaning some more offense missing especially if Jorge doesn’t get locked up.
Yeah, I can see dealing Cano away.
And the “great” Girardi will just win games because he is the manager.
Thanks to Torre being dealt with in such a manner, we will probably hear that Pettitte is retiring, Mo and Posada aren’t a lock to return, A-Rod is gone. Great job being done by the Yankee’s front office. Absolutely stellar job.
But don’t even think of trying to get A-Rod back. Even though that would keep the Yankees as a stronger possible for getting to the post season. And might even be enough to convince Pettitte that he could return to a team that has some promise.
Nah, better to deal away Cano and Melky for a pitcher.
If the Twins insist on Melky’s best friend as part of the Santana deal here’s Cash’s counterproposal:
Melky,Robbie and a level 3 prospect for Santana and either Joe Mauer or Justin Morneau. Twins no like offer? C ya!
Cano is an average second baseman you can find in an alley anywhere. very tradeable
LOL, “Cano is an average second baseman you can find in an alley anywhere. very tradeable.” Hate much??
E-Roc: Nah, he probably just doesn’t remember Knoblach and throwing at the FOX person’s head…
Cano has improved defensively and has a strong arm. More imortantly, do you want to lose his 97 RBI in addition to ARod’s 156? Not to mention Posada’s 90 if he doesn’t return. Why do people want to trade Cano? He’s young, he’s good, and he’s getting better. He can help pick up the ARod slack this season if he gets over 100 rbi. Cano is the real deal. I’d hold on to him.
Yeah, I can see A-Rot fan’s point. A .300 batter who is also a good fielder can be found at shoprite, sitting on the shelf just waiting to be picked up for $1.95
MoPoRo: Really, they sell those at ShopRite?
You’d think I would have noticed by now…
I like Freddie Sanchez too, a young player who as the Yankees with Lowell was given away as a prospect to Pittsburgh by Boston for Jeff Suppan, who Boston had traded to Pittsburgh earlier. What a way to atone for Lowell leaving the Yankee franchise and landing in Boston. And could come cheaper than the other options.
The only problem with Freddie Sanchez is his power and rbi production. He’s a good hitter, but basically a singles hitter.
Is Joe Nathan a free agent? If so, is he willing to do set up?
Anthony Rieber at Newsday has a good article today regarding how he would fix the Yankees. Not saying I agree with everything he suggests but his ideas are intriguing. I’d be intertested to know what everyone here thinks (sorry, I’m an old timer and can’t do the fancy footwork necessary to post the site so that you can access it in a simple click – but I do appreciate those who do it for me in their own posts!)
Joe Nathan isnt a free agent this year
Joe Nathan will be a free agent after the 2008 season. He’ll be 34 and looking for closer money in what may be his final contract.
Yanks better pray that Pettite changes his mind and comes back to pitch in 2008.
Maybe he might change his mind if Posada and Rivera are signed.
Cashman will not be held hostage by the Marlins to get Miguel Cabrera or by the Twins to get Johan Santana.
Some proposals are insane.
Too many fans have wanted farm development and not for the sake of using them as trading chips.
Drive 4-5, So was Lou Pinella and Roy White. How about Bucky Dent, Cletis Boyer, Bobby Richardson or Tony Koubeck? You don’t need power from every player. You are limiting your options to if you think that Arod’s productivity has to be replaced at third base. How about the other alternative Wilson Betemit? This Yankee team needs to be rebuilt, start with young players.
Zach you are correct,Cash will not bend to the marlins request. Orioles have tejeda, they need out field help, they also like Farnsworth and some of the Yankees 2nd tier prospects, that play out field.Yankees might look in that direction.
My guess is that Pettitte decides after the Mitchell Report is published.
Anthony Rieber and Newsday?
Well, value for value:
he gives up Damon for Crede [so the Yanks lose value] and
he allows Posada to walk, so the Yanks lose more value.
One other thought – Farnsworth straight up for Sexson is not likely. [One poster on the Newsday site compared Sexson to a latter-day Dave Kingman, who had 97 RBI in his final year in the bigs, and there were no takers for the next season.] I don’t completely agree – haven’t heard that Richie is as sour as Kong.
I think Rieber is stirring the pot, getting people to talk baseball, and that is a good thing. Following his GM advice, though, would not be a good thing. That’s my opinio
Cano AND Cabrera?
No, not even for Santana.
True, the Yanks could replace Melky in CF with Aaron Rowand or Torii Hunter [or Andruw Jones], or even go Johnny CF Matsui LF and Giambino DH: in EVERY scenario listed above, Yanks get older. Still, no.
Who would replace Cano? Jeter to 2b and Gonz to short?
Gonz to 2B? Scott Rolen/Eric Chavez/Arbitration-Rod at 3B, with Wilson Betemit to second? Nope, sorry, cost of the future is just too steep.
MGW: Thanks for your support
Anyway, yeah. I’m loathe to trade even Melky. Robbie is no go. I’d even trade Wang before Robbie and that says a lot
murphydog don’t lose your great reputation by defending Arod and Boras, you thoughts mean a lot this blog. Lupica(Daily News) is clearly not buying all the Boras propaganda machine on Arod.Big Stein got Arod at a discount, with a subsidy from his former team.Even Big Stein didn’t see the value of Arod without the texas money, and the yankees’s fans knows how he loves to overspend.
Freddy Sanchez is a good situational hitter. He produces. I don’t care about homeruns. As long as he gets that runner on 2nd or 3rd home, I would be fine.
I read that Newsday article. Not a bad take, but some of the stuff he wrote was mind numbing. No Crede, please!!
warm and fuzzy, giving up one of the best players in the game in Alphonso Soriano for Arod is not exactly a discount in my book.
ThatWasMe,
I hear what your saying about not needing a power hitter at every position. But as currently consituted the ‘08 Yankees dont have a consistent power threat.
Boyer, Richardon and Kubek played with a couple of pretty good power hitters who’s last names began with the letter M.
Roy White and Lou Pinella didnt win with the Yankees until Reggie came on board.
For all his faults, I think making a deal for Cabrera makes sense. The Yanks get the power hitter they need and acquire a player that’s just coming into his prime years. He may not be a 3rd baseman long term, but he could be moved to 1st base later.
If the Yanks dont deal for a Cabrera type threat, who is the cleanup hitter?
Who cleaned up late 90s? Bernie, right?
Rebecca, you’re welcome
Hang in there, mi amiga.
Nice episode of The Season, BTW.
Frankly, the more that I read of these variations on trades, the less I like any of them. Well, OK, with the exception of those that cost very little. I know that I’m going to be howled out of this site, but I’d really rather do the least possible in terms of moving the young pitchers and certainly not Cano! If it comes to that, I’d let this year ride with a minimum of changes rather than be held over a barrel by other teams. At the end of 2008, all kinds of moves can be made because the Yanks will be in a far better position to evaluate the young pitchers, including perhaps a few that we haven’t seen yet, as well as determine who they need to get from what will be a bumper crop of FA compared to this year. Any necessary trades would even be far easier to conclude at the end of next year. I’m OK with moving Melky (much as we all love him) if he can be replaced with say a Rowand or preferably Hunter, if it means they can pick up a reasonably good 3B. I don’t even have a problem with starting Giambi at 1B. I mean, he owes us the money! Let him play until he inevitably crashes and then go to Duncan/Phillips/Betemit – whatever. Jason can then be DL’ed for as long as necessary; for the season if need be – unless of course he’s producing when he’s in there. The Yanks are not going to be able to trade him, so let’s get whatever value we can from him. Really, let’s not be too anxious to trade away the future. Most of these guys being discussed are just, at this point anyway, costing way too much. Is it so hard to be patient for a year in order to enjoy a new dynasty in the making starting in 2009? Oh well, I’m looking at in the long term (one year?!) because I’ve already gone through two long barren stretches, so for me a single year is not too long to wait. Meanwhile, it would be fun to see these youngsters develop. But that’s just me, I guess.
Make Jeter the clean up hitter.
Cabrera for Hughes or for one of the other young pitchers doesn’t make sense. Cabrera is so fat he can’t bend over, if he likes the night life in south Florida he will be right at home in NY. I agree the Yankees are not in a good position without right handed power in the line-up. I disagree with the thought that we must sacrifice good young players just to be able to compete with the Red Sox in 2008.
MGW: Thanks, feel free to leave a comment any time—or if you want something longer, I check my email religiously
I don’t see Jeter as a clean up hitter simply because he does not normally hit for power.
Jeter wouldn’t be a traditional clean hitter, but I bet he would hold his own there.
There is the possibility that we have some problems with this Yankee team that cannot be fixed this off-season or until next off-season. It doesn’t make sense to panic to and send away the good young players we have coming up, just so we can be competitive with the Red Sox in 2008.
The other organizations and GMs see this and is the exact reason they have set the cost so high for the players the Yankees are interested in.
I think the Yankees, as they did with Clemens this past season are more opt to paying out money to resolve problems than they are to trading young talent. Unless of course we are not parting with any one of the three young pitchers to get players, rather trading second tier prospects. I just can’t believe all the trades being proposed here, bad signings and trades in the recent past are why we are where we are.
Let’s bring Clemens back….......as a closer, if Rivera leave. LOL!
The Red Sox refused to give up some of their young players, particularly Pedroia, Ellsbury and Youkalis. Their names always came up in trade talks. The yankees need to be the same way, the players we hang on today will make us the champions we will be tomorrow.
Okay, however they did trade a player who’s better than all of those guys to get Josh Beckett. (Hanley Ramirez)
Agreed, and if the Red Sox did not have Beckett this year would they have won the WS? Yankees might do the same in December and give up Hughes or Kennedy for Santana.
PAVANO IS FINALLY BEING RELEASED!!!!
http://www.nypost.com/seven/11112007/sports/yankees/pavano_error_nearing_end_581112.htm
Red Sox got a young front of the rotation guy for a 5 tool player and a great pitching propect in Anibal Sanchez. They look like they get the better end of the deal right now.
I think we agree that we’d like to see the Yanks develop their own talent. The problem is that there are no power hitters in their system.
Perhaps Jose Tabata will develop into one, but right now the kid weighs only 165 pounds. Anyone have some steroids? JOKING!!
Hughes & Kennedy are going to be good major league pitchers. Neither of them posesses a dominant pitch. I dont have a problem trading a potential #2 or #3 starter for a banafide impact player. The Yanks would be dealing from their strength because they have a slew of pitching prospects.
I thought they were just going to take Pavano off of the 40 man roster because they need to Jeff Marquez on there. At any rate, I would try to trade him first. Maybe we can get some junk and peanuts for him.
Oh G-d please let it be true, I need some good news!
DRIVE 4-5 Little Stein has already stated they will not trade one of the three for a position player. If we are getting a Jimmy Key, David Cone type, who has a proven record in the AL as Santana does, they will probably pull the trigger. I hope they keep all three, I think they will all be effective and it will be a fun season in 2008. How good or effective Hughes and Kennedy will be is a matter of opinion, trading them involves a great deal of risk.
hmm i wonder who would wear #45 now? Hughes? Peavy, if he’s traded?
ThatWasMe—I still think the Marlins got the better end of that deal. They got the second best 5 tool player in baseball and a #2 or #3 starter for Josh Beckett. Josh Beckett finally lived up to the hype this year. He didn’t win the WS for the RedSox. The team won the WS with help from Schilling, Lowell, Ortiz, and Manny. Not just Josh Beckett.
If the Yankees could get Johan Santana for Robinson Cano and Melky and still keep Hughes/Chamberlain/Kennedy wouldn’t that make them better going forward.
I have to think that a pitching staff featuring: Santana,
Hughes, Chamberlain, Kennedy, Wang, Pettitte (if he comes back)would undoubtedly be the strongest pitching staff in the majors. No?
The Yankees have enough money to sign free agents to replace what they would lose in Cano/Melky. On top of that the Yankees have been drafting a lot of high ceiling position players recently and have the resources to continue to do so.
Now if the Twins want Cano, AND one of Hughes/Chamberlain/Kennedy then it’s a deal breaker.
This is how I envision the Yankees lineup would look if they traded Cano/Melky for Santana.
Damon LF/DH
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Tori Hunter CF
Matsui DH/LF
Posada C (I think he comes back)
Giambi DH/1B
Betemit 3B
A. Gonzalez 2B
To me that’s a championship roster.
Pavano will turn out to be similar to Steve Karsay. Eventually mend from surgery and flounder with a team or two before dropping out of sight completely.
E-ROC, could be, Beckett has been on the DL ten times in his career.I think that trade will be revisited many times in the future. I remember Sanchez shortly after he was brought up pitching against the Yankees in 2006 he was electric and beat us. Sure the WS was a team effort, if you look at the rest of that Boston staff without Beckett, I don’t see them getting past Cleveland in the ALCS.
Flags fly forever my friend.
I just think that the Yanks need to fill some of the holes on their roster by using some of their surplus. There are 2 glaring holes not only this year but down the line as well. The Yankees have concentrated on drafting pitchers at the expense of position players. There is not one legitimate catching prospect in the entire system. There also is not one rbi/power hitter above single A.
As a season ticket holder, I dont mind if the Yanks are at least competitive this year. But they darn sure better come up with a plan to fill their holes by ‘09.
As I said before, they are going to charge us $9 a beer whether the 3rd baseman is Wilson Betemit or Alex Rodriguez. I dont want to hear about the Yankees cutting payroll. At premium prices to the fans they owe it to us to put out a premium team.
Dude ever heard of Jesus Montero and Frankie Cervelli? I’d call them legit catching prospects.
DRIVE 4-5 Not just the Yankees, there are few great catching prospects out there.
Cervelli is admittedly overrated, but Montero has a chance to be something special. Catching prospects don’t grow on trees. The only top teir catching prospects I can think of are Weiters, Salty, Ianetta and Clement.
So I got my 2007 team picture in the mail. Carl Pavano is in it. Sad times.
Maybe we can hit lightning in a bottle with JD Closser.
How bout signing Timlin. He’s certainly a better option than Bruney, Farns, and Viz.
Where is everyone today?
I’d trade Cano and Melky for Santana in a second. Santana is a lefthanded ace! I’t’s all about pitching, we’d all agree. So if you have Santan, Wang, Kennedy, Hughs, Chamberlin, and a 40% shot a Pettitte. Now were talking.
We’re all here Rebecca, but most of us are just listening to the conversation.
Wonder if Pete is at the Giants/Dallas game, usually there is a morning post besides this midnight one.
Montero is not only the best catching prospect in the Yankee MiLB system, but also its best power hittng prospect.
Well I was about to post a link to that Third Watch article from the Post but see someone beat me to it. There are lots of interesting ideas in there. Freddy Sanchez? Yes please! I’d say no to Bill Hall, he strikes out too much. I’d vastly prefer a contact hitter. Assuming my first choice Beltre isn’t available, Scott Rolen is by far the best combination of “won’t cost alot” and “farthest above average player”...if he’s healthy, but that is a big if and a large risk to take. I also think he and Girardi are a GREAT match.
I’d still be fine with Tejada, but Mora is an interesting idea too. What bothers me about Tejada is he’s lazy. Mora has always seemed to be much more of a “gamer” to me – IIRC from Yanks/O’s broadcasts, he was the guy who always tried the hardest to convince his teammates to give a crap. Also, I’d be a bit worried about Tejada’s D. Mora seems like he’d be better in that regard, so I’m officially intrigued.
BBB
Agreed Hall totally regressed last year as well, I like Mora as well. Maybe Mora for Farnsworth & a prospect.
Don’tfirecash: Why do you say Cervelli is overrated? I’m not saying you’re wrong, I just don’t know much about him and now wondering how many eggs I should put in the “Cervelli is the catcher of the future” basket. What skills does he have and what does he lack?
Montero, from what I know, is a scary hitter but does he realistically have a future at the C position, or is he better off being moved to 1b?
And speaking of 1b, does anyone familiar with Juan Miranda think he has a future with the team? I was very impressed the one game I saw him in Trenton, he was hitting the snot out of the ball, but for all I know that could have been the best game of his career.
Oh, so that’s where the lot of everyone is…watching Giants/Dallas.
Ahh
Meanwhile, I’m trying to figure out how to write a 7-10 page essay while feeling incredibly lightheaded, cold-ish and with an inability to stop sneezing.
Personally, I just think it’d be awesome to have a player named Jesus.
Buddy – apparently the O’s are very interested in Farnsworth. Andy MacPhail helped develop him w/the Cubs and wants to get his hands on him again. That’s one less prospect we’d have to give up and I doubt any other teams want Farns, thus making a deal w/the O’s all the more attractive.
We just have to hope Angelos’ dumb butt doesn’t stick his nose in with the “let’s not help a division rival” stuff. As if trading Mora to the Yanks is going to interfere with the O’s chances of winning the division in ‘08!
Giants/Dallas didn’t start yet…I am biting my nails anxiously awaiting kickoff and trying to make the time pass by waxing intellectual on here about prospects and 3rd basemen. LET’S GO BIG BLUE!!!!
GO COWBOYS!
BBB
Their in red today not their blue.
GO GIANTS
New Orleans is about to get beat by an 0-8 team.
I think New Orleans had their shot last year. Bush isn’t as good as he was blown up to be. Another over sold Heisman winner.
I am in the Balitmore area and watch the O’s with some regularity – Mora would be a great addition, particularly if it would only take Kyle Farnsworth to make it happen. He is an excellent fielder – good contact hitter and he bunts very well – sac’s, and the occassional squeeze to keep defenses honest.
I admire what Derek Jeter has accomplished but his range has narrowed considerably – Peter – do you think he has the courage to shift positions in the near term? Or, is it just not possible given his personna?
bh blue: haha, whoops, force of habit. In that case GO G-MEN!!! Huge huge games this week and next. We are about to find out what they’re really made of!
Updates on the kids

Not swinging a bat, but taking ground balls…..Chase Weems-2007 draft-catchergot on base 6 times in first 2 games, mostly on walks…..Jairo Heredia-pitcher—-Most impressive pitcher in the first game. Fastball was only 89 so far, but showed a very good curve.Highlighes-
Gary Denbo Interview….w/PinstripePlus: Gary Denbo was the 2007 minor league hitting guru for the Yankees. He was just hired by the Toronto Blue Jays to be their hitting coach in 08. Jose Tabata—Denbo feels he’ll always hit for a good average, and his power will be the last thing to come to his game. As it is, for most young players…..Jesus Montero-Working on more consistent stride & action. Very good power. Denbo feels he can be a big rbi guy…...Eric Duncan-showed better at bats as the season went along. He has to trust his swing with inside pitches…....Kyle Anson-recently converted to catcher. Expects his offense to come after a year or two of learning the new position…....Mitch Hilligoss—-3rd base. Has strength & power. Swings at too many balls out of the zone right now. Needs more plate discipline.NOTES: Shelly Duncan was named to the Topps 2007 AAA All-Star Team. Not bad considering Duncan was in NY the last 6 weeks of the season.
Time for Joe Gibbs to back to NASCAR.
would love to see the d show up today and shut them down. I think dallas has been pumped a little to much by the talking heads. Shut them up for a while.
Jennifer – Thank you for the update. It was much appreciated.
bh blue the Cowboys are 7-1 and shellacked the Giants in the first game. The Giants have played 2 teams with decent QBs and lost both. Of course they beat the Eagle 16-3 in the Meadowlands, the Eagles without Westbrook. You saw what the Boys did to the Eagles last week in Philly with West brook.
Sorry—I just cant do it. Cano and Cabrera for Johan? Coming off a bad year, with at least two of our top pitchers? No way.
Melky, Hughes, and Kennedy/Horne would be fine by me. But subbing Cano for Melky??? No way! Where could we replace Cano? One of the top 2B in the League.
Melky can be replaced, Torii, Rowand, etc.
But if they tade Robbie Cano, it would hurt for years to come.
BBB I brought up Mora about a week ago as well as I like him the main issue with him is that he has a full NO TRADE clause so he would have to waive that for anything to happen
ok I got back in time to read some interesting comments
first, Bill Hall or Freddy Sanchez would be unbelieveable options !! And I love the thought of either of them or Edwin Encarnacion being a suitable stop gap at 3B, but Pirates aren’t giving Sanchez away this was and still is a legit .350 to .370 hitter, he doesn’t homer but I compare his situational hits to a better Jeter, NOT IN THE PLAYOFFS , I’m talking game to game basis, second, Bill Hall isn’t getting traded from Milwaukee he’s to valuable
THIRD
LETS GO BIG BLUE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No problem. Some guy posts it on the yes boards every week. It is very informative.
Anyone watch the end of the Steelers game. It was pretty exciting.
And good news the Jets are now tied for the second worst record.
Number 2 pick here we come, because it doesn’t look like the Fins will ever win a game.
com’on G-Men get the stop !!
dammit !!
Did they just replace the turf at GS? It looks different. And what a throw by Tony. Go BOYS!! Sorry I can’t root for the Giants, although I will be rooting for them when they play the pats.
The Red jerseys did a lot of good on that series.
Would you trade Melky and Cano if it gets you Santana? I think I would really consider it.
Melky yes, Cano , nope.
Sorry folks followed the Yankees since the early fifties. But in 1964 the Cowboys drafted one of my boyhood idols Bob Hayes from Florida A&M and have with them ever since.
and he was past the line of scrimmage when he threw that
Well, Rebecca,
My husband, my daughter and I spent most of the afternoon out. My husband has some old trains that his dad left him, and he wanted to go to this place in Aberdeen, NJ called ‘The Hobby Shop.’ I think we were there about 20 or so years ago, more, probably, because they do deal in baseball cards, as well as trains. Anyway, while he was looking at railroad track and other train stuff, I went to the back of the store where the BB merchandise (collectibles) were. There were 2 Joba Chamberlain autographed pictures on the wall. They were priced in the 2-3 hundred dollar range. Just as a comparison, Phil Hughes had an autographed picture there that was marked around $100. And Joba was considerably higher than Donny Baseball, who was less than Melky Cabrera, but slightly more than Phil. Just interesting. Joba has definitely arrived. I hope, I just hope, this was all real – that he is what he looked to be. Because it was truly special.
As I’ve said before, I can’t get into all the trade stuff. It’s just not worth it to me to expend the emotional energy worrying about who’s going to stay and who’s going to go and for whom. I like to read, or skim, what most people have to say, but I have nothing to add to such coversations. I guess I’m more RE-active than pro-active. I guess I figure that what’s going to happen is going to happen, and nothing I do or say will have any effect at all. So, I’ll wait, and hope that for crying out loud Cano isn’t included in a trade. I would tend to doubt it, unless it’s a blockbuster of the Soriano for Rodriguez type. And I don’t consider J. Santana to be in that arena. For some reason, I am always skeptical of some other team’s pitcher. Those acquisitions don’t usually seem to work out for the Yankees, in general, recently.
we need to run Dallas to death this quarter and hit that Tony Hom* guy
Jesus Montero is only 17 and might get as far as Staten Island or Low A Charleston in ‘08. Francisco Cervelli is a young Jorge. Hits from both sides of the plate and above average arm. Will develop power in time. P.J. Pilittere is slightly below Cervelli.
All but Montero will be drilled hard by Tony Pena as spring training invitees.
Can’t trade Cano, especially now. The Yanks would have to replace 2 impact hitters as well as 1/2 of the infield. Whoever above said that Robby is an average 2nd baseman obviously has not been paying attention. Robby is already one of the best, is young, and has the potential to get even better as he develops more power and patience. If the Yanks had kept A-Rod, it would make sense for the Yanks to consider a package headed by Cano, but I don’t believe it makes any sense at all at this point. And the Yankees would essentially be giving up 2008 as a complete rebuilding season if they threw Leche into that package as well. True, Johan would come on board, and we all love him, but then you’d have a true ace, a solid #2 (Wang), and 3 potential great ones in Hughes, Chamberlain and IPK but NO 3rd baseman, NO 2nd baseman, and NO centerfielder. And sorry, but none of the Yankees position players in the minors are ready to fill those slots. How’s Cash gonna fill all those holes (with the approximate value of Cano/Leche/ARod) without giving away 1 o more of the big 3 and the rest of the farm?
It’s good that the Yankees have released Pavano. Hopefully the Yankees and all of us fans can put his tenure behind and pretend that it never happened.
Romo was pretty close to being beyond the line of scrimmage when he threw that pass. I’m kind of depressed, the Titans did not play well today at all.
holy crap an angel got his wings !
Gayle-
Loved your idea of Mora last week, it’s been reported he wants out of Baltimore, waiving his no trade would be no problem.
Hall is playing the everyday CF for the Brewers, Braun will be playing 3rd for years to come.
Sanchez doesn’t have enough power & Encarnacion defense is suspect & isn’t on the block.
Farnsworthless for Mora is a deal worth making.
SHOCKEY BABY !!!
Trade Cano ? And replace him with who ? Cano plays everyday. Johan Santana pitches every 5 days. Melky could be replaced by Rowand / Hunter / Gardner.
Why have to deal for a quality 2nd baseman and give up even more prospects. Santana is a difference maker but not that much of a difference maker.
I don’t respond much to here because I don’t type fast enough. I have been following the Yanks and the G-men seems like forever. My kids give me crap aaabout just following the NY teams. But that is all we got on the tube when I was a kid. So been following them since the late 50’s.
Keep up your stuff Doreen you seem to have a good handle on life in general.
The Yankees will have cleared so much payroll by the end of 2008 that they’ll be able to outbid any other team for Johan Santana…by 5-10 million dollars per season extra. Johan Santana and his agent should be committed if they can’t find a simple pocket calculator to add up the salaries of Giambi + Abreu + Moose etc. etc.
We can be patient for 1 year can’t we? While we await the ace of our starting rotation, we should be thinking about weak areas that we can affect such as the bullpen. How are we going to construct a playoff caliber bullpen without Joba in it? If somebody has a blueprint, please share it with us.
Cano is one of the best infield prospects in MLB. Considering the Yankees lack of infield prospects right now, trading him would be insane!
Same old Giants, play a good team, lose because of bad tackling, poor pass coverage, stupid penalties! Eli Manning is the ARod of the NFL!
Now that I’ve vented – Thanks to all of our veterans and Good Night!
Master Wangkee;
One problem – if Minny Front Office isn’t able to negotiatie a contract extension with Santana, they will trade him before the 2008 Trading Deadline…to a Team smart enough to negotiate a long term deal before acquiring him.
Latham Joe:
Santana and his agent aren’t required to grant an extension to a trade partner. He has a right to enter free agency and reap the full benefits of the Yankees shrinking payroll situation. His agent should be fired if he can’t do basic math. We’re getting Santana and we’re not going to have to trade anybody for him. Maybe some team acquires him but they’ll only get him as a 1 year rental. We’re in the best position to lock him up long term at a tag of 5-10 million above any other team. We hold all the cards here because the Twins front office knows that we’re the team with the resources and willpower to wait everyone out and outbid them in 1 year. If anything, we should offer far less talent than other teams because they don’t have as much money as us. We have the Twins by the throat.
Montero is my pick for a future Yankee Catcher.
I hope that is true about Pavano..now Hughes bring some legitimacy to that number…hasnt had any since Joe Girardi wore it before Cecil Fielder got on the team.
Some of you guys responded to my earlier post about the report that the Twins would want Cano in a trade for Johan.
Some said Yes but most said NO…thoose who said NO,changed out Cano for a pitcher…according to the report, the Twins dont want pitchers in a trade for Johan, they evidently have some young guns, they have always needed offense.
I would trade Cano for Johan, but not for both CC Boys.I’d do a Cano/Duncan for Johan and low A position player, and again only if we reach an agreement on an extension.
