Opting out and taking some vacation

November
14

The time has come to go on vacation. Between now and the start of the Winter Meetings, I’m taking a break from covering the Yankees.

The way it usually works for baseball writers is that we take most of our time off in the winter. I have two weeks now, more time in late December and then a good chunk of January. This is when you make up for working seven straights weeks of spring training and every day in October.

I’m not going to try and tell you it’s hard work. It’s a fun job and I love it. But being able to get away from the PowerBook, cell phone and daily writing responsibilities will be a good thing.

However, I do plan to check in here from time to time, so you’ll have a place to post. The Journal News will run Yankee stories by other folks, so check them out. I’ll be back on Dec. 2.

Thanks for reading the blog and commenting as often as you do.

Pete, Have a good time. Anyway, any legs to the A-Rod rumors?

  2. Ralph

Have a relaxing time off. Re-energize for the coming season. This must be how it feels for someone’s psychiatrist to go on vacation. You will be missed.

  3. DMan

    Great job this season Pete!

    Enjoy your vacation!

  4. Dee

Enjoy Pete, you deserve it. Thanks again for running such a great blog.

I hope this site is still in one piece when you return. There’s no telling how out of control we’ll be if there is some major signing news while you’re away.

  5. Propaghandi

    Have a great time Pete!

On a side note, I just went over to AROD.COM and checked out some emails that Alex answered. This one in particular caught me:

Q: I was just wondering who is your best friend on the team? I also want to know your kids names?—Samantha G., Matawan N.J.

Alex: Hello Samantha, I am close with everyone and have a lot of great friends on the Yankees, so it’s hard for me to say I have one best friend. But I am probably the closest with Mariano Rivera. I have one daughter and her name is Natasha.

So, Alex is the closest with Mo. Could this be the reason Mo hasn’t accepted yet? Do you think Mo and Alex are in contact and discussing things?

    Food for thought.

  6. Felipe from Brazil

Your vacations are well deserved Pete, anyway don’t forget the blog adicts ‘cause we will miss your funny, well scooped posts!
    enjoy!

  7. YankeeRican in FL

Pete, enjoy your well deserved time off. Thanks for being the best Yankees reporter out there…it does not go unappreciated!

  8. jay destro

    Propaghandi:

Don’t get it twisted, Alex does what’s good for Alex.

    Pete:

Have a good time, and pour one for me.

  9. mel

    Pete,

Have a good time on your well-deserved vacation. We won’t begrudge you for opting out. :)

  10. Miller

    Pete:

please dont go, I need up to the date Yankees news at all times. No other blogs do such a thing. In fact, some blogs actually give you credit for getting info first. DONT GO!!!

  11. dadofjft

So, there’s no point in checking in every hour? I’m supposed to focus on work? Ai yi yi.

  12. mel

Continuing the conversation from the last thread…

Dougie wants to come back, but he knows the drill. He even joked about the only way that will be possible is if Alex came back.

If A-rod came back, I would imagine it would be for a much shorter term than 10 or 12 years. The annual break down of the mega-deal Alex is looking for is only about $29M. I would think that shorter, fatter would actually be better for him, because the landscape of baseball is sure to be drastically different in 10, even 5 years from now. There may be a time when Alex’s annual salary will border on poverty. How will a man be able to live off of a mere $29M in 2019? We are talking about a man who wanted to be the richest man in…sports. Remember how they came up with the figure for the last deal? They doubled the value of Garnett’s mega-deal at the time. Take a look at the deals that Beckham or Garnett just got to get your ballpark figure.

Enjoy! I am not a blogger. Buy I read your blog seveal times a day. I’ll enjoy reading again when you return. I grew up in the Bronx and live in Indiana. Your blog and the Yankee web site is how I keep in touch with the Yanks. You do a great job! Thanks!

  21. Paul V

Thanks Peter. You have given us wayward souls a place to gather, argue, debate, agree, scream and moan, cry, laugh, and just be stupid. That’s a lot. What more could a tribe of people ask for?

    Enjoy your vacation. GO YANKEES!

  28. jclspls in TW

Hello Pete: First post from a long-time lurker here in TW, thanks for a great season, a great book (I called it CMW 101) and a fine blog!

Just finished watching Team USA defeated TW 10-7, quite a cliff-hanger during the 6th, great performance by both teams.

Enjoy your vacation! Happy Turkey Day to you and yours! How I miss the jam-packed malls and the traffic…

  29. Caribbean Yankee

    Have a wondeful time, Pete

  30. Joe

  34. Matt

Pete, I check the blog about 30 times a day; I live in Boston and it’s a marvelous haven from all the nonsense here. What am I going to do now? Have you no loyalty? No dedication?

    Kidding…have a great time off.

  35. LathamJoe

    Peter:
Thanks for the great job you do in running this Blog and keeping us informed.

Although I/We don’t always see eye-to-eye on all issues, I cannot deny your hard work and dedication.

I suppose you’ll likely watch a few Patriot games during your vacation – perhaps watching them get beat on Dec 29th in East Rutherford, NJ!

Enjoy your vacation – you’ve earned it!

  36. RonH

Pete, enjoy your time off. Have a happy, healthy and safe Thanksgiving holiday!

  37. Shamus

Now all I have is Prosportsdaily.com

But I always check Pete at Lohud first…. Which other blogs are good—Feinsand, Kepner?

  38. Mike

Enjoy the vaca Pete, you certainly earned it.

  39. Khoa

    Thanks Pete. Take it easy!

  40. Drew

Have a good time Pete..don’t worry..I talked to your editor about taking over. :D

  41. Mike

    Peter,

if I could suggest, someone should cover the blog while you are on vacation. It would help the readers and it may help another yankee blogger. He may not have the press credentials, or the contacts within the organization, but that can also be a nice change of pace for all of us. Yanksblog.com and ReplacementLevel.com come to mind. maybe even NoMaas.org. if you don’t like those, I’ll fill in for you. ;)

    just a suggestion.

  42. We Miss Paulie

Have a great vacation Pete! Thanks for everything this year.

  43. KLev

Pete: know you like to read non-baseball books in the winter (or is it the other way around)?
Anyway, good non-baseball book: “Rubicon: The Last Years of the Roman Republic” by Tom Holland. If baseball, fun read is “The Year Babe Ruth Hit 104 Home Runs: Recrowning Baseball’s Greatest Slugger” by Bill Jenkinson—a lot of fun history and interesting historical look at baseball in the 20s.
    Have a good vacation!

  44. sunny615

Feinsand and Kepter are both good, but are updated once or twice a week (if that). Pete is the true workhorse of blogs. There is no replacement.

    Have a great vacation.

  45. sunny615

by the way – I’m looking forward to the next two weeks where posts here will have probably 1000-1500 posts each.

    joy.

    kidding.

    sorta.

  46. rbj

Peter, thanks for what you do. Enjoy your time off.

  47. Sherri

Thanks, Pete! You’ll be back the day of my birthday, so that’ll be a great present! Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy your time off!!!

  48. Deep to Left

Crap. How am I supposed to fill the 8 or 9 hours a day I sit at my desk? Rotoworld just doesn’t cut it. It’s awful selfish of you to go on vacation Pete.

Can you atleast give us advance warnings so we can all schedule our vacations at the same time?!

  49. Don Capone (Designated Blogger)

    AAAAAGGGHHH!
What am I going to do all day at work now?! Guess I can slum it over at the Mets lohud blog. Enjoy your time off, Peter. Check in if ARod signs with the Yomiuri Giants or something.

  50. Annie Savoy

Have a great Holiday vacation – you’ve earned it.

  51. Yanksrule57

  62. Steve

    Pete:

You deserve it. This is my best source (plus asbnyy) for Yankee information. Plus your blog is eminently readable and always well done.
