I'm as big a fan of Damon as anyone, and am very happy with how his season ended, but the guy's getting old. He just can't the grind it out for the whole season anymore. And sure, Melky can't hit that well yet: (Damon has, what, almost a decade more experience at the plate?), but he should only improve.

Sure, Melky's not untouchable, but he fits fine already and will only get better.

PS - I'm old, but I don't remember seeing Melky drop any last summer.

i think it's been a while since someone had a gun in CF and a lot of us are still in awe from Melky's performance last year.

post i made yesterday (that nobody seemed to read :( ):

assuming Melky is gone by opening day, what would you think of Matsui, Damon, Abreu from left to right in the outfield, picking up Corey Patterson as a 4th OF? A great pinch runner or defensive replacement. Or just a holdover until we can call someone else up midseason.

melky probably threw out about 10 men at the plate last year. if damon can catch 10 more balls that melky couldn't have gotten to, we are back at the same place.

outs are outs.

i love melky's arm, but you are overrating the importance of it. 10 outs over the course of the season won't make up the difference in their abilities at the plate.

i'd love to keep melky, but he's not an untouchable.

With all due respect Pete: trading Melky is nuts. "Damon's arm doesn't come into play all that much" ? How many times did Melky throw a guy out at home last season? And how many runs did he save with the threat that he could?

Pete, I think that having an outfield of Matsui - Damon - Abreu would be terrible. let's even put aside the high potential for Matsui and Damon to miss a lot of time with injuries during the year and assume that all three guys play all season. Matsui butchers a lot of balls and has only a so-so arm. Damon has great range but can't throw the ball once he catches it. Abreu has never even been introduced to an outfield wall, rarely breaks a sweat and has only a so-so arm. There really is nobody amongst those three who can cover for the others' weaknesses as Melky does. We may have outstanding young pitching, but with that outfield, what happens to their ERAs and their confidence?
