A few words before we really get started

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Dec 03, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

I’ll be posting often (OK, maniacally) during the Meetings and I encourage you to screw off at work and comment all you want. That is what we’re all about here at the blog.

Just a few things:

If your initial post doesn’t appear, it’s likely in the spam filter for some reason. Don’t send it again and again and again. Because then it really looks like spam. Give me a chance to approve it.

Post whatever you like. Just don’t pretend you’re somebody else or post something false as being breaking news. That’ll get you double-secret probation and you’ll be banned from Faber College.

I quite likely won’t have the time to flip through every comment. If you have some specific question, feel free to e-mail me.

Thanks

I will give my CC number over the phone to the waiter if you break the Johan story here first !!!!

    Shamus,

That’s really nice of you, but Pete may not be able to find the place. ;)

“That’ll get you double-secret probation and you’ll be banned from Faber College.”

That movie was written by alums from my college, and based on stuff they experienced in their frat here back in the ’70s. They apparently cut out some of the most disgusting stuff.

Something to do when i`m sick at least

  9. gayle December 3rd, 2007 at 11:49 am

Thanks for everything Pete your care and oversight of the blog. This has become the place to be for Yankees news and discussion.

Let the fun begin (not that it has really ended at all since the last pitch of the season.)

I want to give Pete a high five I’m so excited right now.

  11. Rebecca--Optimist Prime December 3rd, 2007 at 11:49 am

But I gotta go to class!

  12. rb15 December 3rd, 2007 at 11:53 am

Completely off-topic: I’ve noticed that a bunch of us live in Boston. Is there some bar where you all go to watch the Yankees? Some secret, underground, shades-drawn type of place? I would love to have an oasis in the desert this summer.

  13. Jake December 3rd, 2007 at 11:55 am

    WELCOME BACK ANDY!

At least we now have our “Ace” and some experience back in the rotation. Good news.

Now we have something solid to work with and can focus more on our bullpen.

On a side note, what is the deal with the high prices for these starters? It is unreal. For Bedard the Orioles want 3 top prospects? Same with the A’s for Dan Haren! Unreal. I am not sure this makes Santana more appealing since you have to drop $20-25 million a year in a 5+ year extension.

Perhaps Ben Sheets WOULD be the better option depending on what insane asking price the Brewers will have.

Geez, I’d just take my chances with Pettitte, Wang, and the Youngsters/Mussina, consider bringing in an innings eater like Livan Hernandez, and work on the pen. Use Kennedy in long relief, throw Hughes and Joba in to the rotation. A lot of options, but none of them include bringing in that shutdown starter.

    thanks pete

would i be assuming correctly that short posts are filtered by you for spam?

  16. Jake December 3rd, 2007 at 11:58 am

The only way we’ll know what our youngsters are capable of is by throwing them in to the fire.

Maybe we’ll learn a little something about being patient and growing the farm. Could pay dividends down the road.

  17. Sherri December 3rd, 2007 at 11:59 am

Dec. 3rd and Pete’s back to work! Yeahhh!!!

  18. Ryan December 3rd, 2007 at 11:59 am

I would LOVE Sheets, but he’s the NL Rich Harden, too much of an injury risk.

  19. murphydog December 3rd, 2007 at 12:01 pm

    Jake:

the high trade prices are dictated by a thin FA market and the fact that the other teams recognize the Yankee depth at the farm with lots of good RH pitching prospects.

  20. Jake December 3rd, 2007 at 12:06 pm

    murphydog,

I know why the trade prices are what they are, but it is still absurd.

Essentially, any team that makes a trade for one of these starters has to sell the farm or at least the more lucrative crops on that farm.

    Ryan,

I agree…Sheets is a bit scary and the injury history is too consistent to turn a blind eye to. Just wracking my brain for potentially cheaper and high risk/reward players.

    RB15

It’s called Direct TV. That’s the only way the yankee fans in Boston get to hear/see anything NY related. Well they could sit in their car at certain areas along Rt 128.

  23. TwinsfaninNY December 3rd, 2007 at 12:14 pm

    1. Santana has NOT informed the Twins that he would only accept a trade to the Yankees or Red Sox.

    http://www.startribune.com/blogs/neal/?p=282

    2. It’s good to see that people here have finally stopped with the delusion that Santana would not go to the Red Sox (for the record, he is a close friend of David Ortiz). Santana has expressed a preference to play on the east coast.

    3. Finally, Santana has indicated an interest in the past in playing in the NL. why? cause then he can hit. look up Santana’s hitting stats in major-league play. you’ll understand why.

  24. Jake December 3rd, 2007 at 12:15 pm

Are you guys reading about the potential “tampering” charges that the Twins may pursue for Hank’s comments?

How is that tampering? He is saying he doesn’t want to get used and won’t sit around in this BS for much longer.

  25. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX") December 3rd, 2007 at 12:19 pm

Jake, they’re pissed at Hank, because it’s like him telling Johan I’ll give the moon for you if you come here, but there is nothing wrong w/ what Hank said

  26. Mike W December 3rd, 2007 at 12:22 pm

With Andy back in the mix, I say they pull Hughes off the table and push the IPK/Melky/another prospect as a final offer to the Twins. If the Sox are serious about including Ellsbury, then have at it. The Yanks should then focus their sights on Haren. Potentially an IPK/Tabata package could do the trick as Billy Beane has a supposed affinity for IPK (and looooves the young potential like Tabata).

  27. sunny615 December 3rd, 2007 at 12:22 pm

I’m sure the Twins will spout off against Hanks “I’ll pay anything for Santana” comment, but like with all things, it’ll come to nothing.

  28. sunny615 December 3rd, 2007 at 12:25 pm

IPK will not do it for Beane. The asking price from Beane has already started at Hughes and Kennedy. The Os’ McPhail is already looking for 4 top prospects for Bedard. Not one, not 2, … 4. People who think other GM’s will gladly give over their top players for Yankee semi-top prospects need to stop drinking the Kool-Aid.

  29. Matt December 3rd, 2007 at 12:27 pm

    Hey Pete,

I was wondering, since I am just out of college myself. Do all the kids down there that are trying to get jobs just go up to these random exec’s and gms and them resume? Can they even get that close to them without security bugging out? Sounds like a pretty crazy scene to me.

  30. Tomy Gun December 3rd, 2007 at 12:42 pm

Hey Pete, any news about what the Yankees “real” plan about CF will be if they trade Melky?

Also as I had mentioned last night, Hanks comments about Sanatana have POed the Twins. Do you know what the penalties for tampering are? Do you think that he will get in trouble?

  31. sunny615 December 3rd, 2007 at 12:45 pm

Unless there’s some solid evidence outside of Hanks “I want Santana to know we love him” I seriously doubt the Twins will do anything. They’re not going to cut off a potential trade partner who is offering a top prospect. It’s the very definition of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

  32. PittsburghYankeeFan December 3rd, 2007 at 12:58 pm

    Twins Fan

Pettitte is back. Be satisfied with one more year of Johan and the draft picks because your owner is a cheapskate.

Also be satisfied with Kennedy, Cabrera, and some AA talent. I think that’s actually better than draft picks, and you should take it. Hughes should stay with NY. The Sox will not give Johan what he wants, so even if he would OK a trade there (which as a lefty I’m not so sure he would), it’s as good as him staying put.

When is Liriano coming back? Usually TJ surgery needs 2 seasons for full recovery.

  33. ElMaestro December 3rd, 2007 at 1:10 pm

Ok Pete, now that you are back we have our insider again… Welcome :-)

  34. jashell2000 December 3rd, 2007 at 1:17 pm

    Hi Pete,

First time post. Glad to have you back, I can’t wait to hear what else you hear out in Nashville today. I might be in the minority in this but I say that with Andy coming back that we keep Joba in the pen for 08. To be able to shorten a game to 6 innings (and keep it close) versus getting 6 solid innings only to give up the lead late (with a crap shoot bullpen) is the wrong approach. Our rotation currently can get us to the 6th inning and keep our offense in the game. If Santana comes to NY then I will feel even more strongly about this. Can you imagine Santana for 6/7 innings, Joba 1/2 innings, and close it with Mo? With our offense that is as close to an automoatc W as you can get. Include the same formula for Wang, Andy, Hughes, and IPK/Mussina and we would be in good shape. Joba is ony 21 as well. One year more in the pen will not hurt his development. That’s my take. Thanks for the great work man!

  35. grafxkid December 3rd, 2007 at 1:19 pm

Welcome Back Andy! Welcome Back Pete!! Lets get this thing going…Looking for some great news today and throughout the week for us!!

  36. Mitchell's Eleven December 3rd, 2007 at 2:11 pm

You run the best Yankee blog on the net, Pete. I’d say that, for a board like this, we keep to our best behavior pretty well.

  37. Mike December 3rd, 2007 at 2:15 pm

The Minnesota bostonians are looking at tampering charges against Mr. Steinbrenner. What a joke!! They’re going to screw us over just like Garnett, Moss, etc. so why even bother going down another avenue to try to screw the Yanks. Just deal Johan to the sox for a sac of potatoes and get it over with. Jeez.

By the way, there are some great games located at http://www.sell.com/2389VV Check em out!!

  38. Mike December 3rd, 2007 at 2:18 pm

    Pittsburgh Yankee fan,

What ya mean… Red Sox will not give Johan what he wants. It dont matta what the sox offer him, he’ll take whatever they offer bent over and ready for insertion

  39. Stuck In Queens December 3rd, 2007 at 3:17 pm

Why haven’t we heard about other teams calling about Hughes?

I am not saying to treat him like bait, but at least use any trade proposal as leverage against Minn.

  40. bardos December 3rd, 2007 at 5:37 pm

i don’t understand the tampering rule very well. can someone plz explain… the yankees have been in trade negotiations with the twins over johan santana for what seems weeks now. the press comments daily. everyone is on the edge of theri seat.

suddenly a yankee owner (or whatever he is) gives a quote to the press saying the yankees are interested in trading for santana. this is news? this is something to get your panties tied in a knot about? i don’t get it.
