I don't think the Petitte coming back is necessarily a coincidence but I don't think it was pre-planned either.

Petitte was certainly staying up on team news in the off-season. He must have begun to feel that by delaying his decision he was hurting the "team" and the front office's ability to plan for the upcoming season. He obviously recognized the Yankees' leverage in doing off-season deals would be better with him committed to another year of play.
Returning now also works in his favor since he'd prefer to return to a stronger team than one that has traded away talent that could help his quest for another ring.

The Santana circus may have forced Petitte to act a little sooner. But others noted above that his intention was to announce his decision in December in order to have time to prepare for next season. Like the re-signed FAs, Pettitie wanted to see what the Yankees committment was under new leadership. Particularly with the loss of Torre.

I am certain he recently heard from Cashman (directly or through his agent) that given the circumstances surrounding the Santana trade a prompt definitive decision would be appreciated.

Twins NEED to trade Santana. They're not getting him back, and he said he won't waive during the season. (That's why this deal isn't a steal) I think Santana wants to be a Yankee with his declaration of the no waive during the season. I think IPK and Melky +Betimit/Giambi(Giambi's a reach to be rid of) would be a good trade, but I don't know if Twins are that desperate yet. Hughes is good, I think we'll regret letting him go as we do letting go Lowell. I'll miss Melky, but it also gives Damon a spot to play. Right now I'm more worried about the bullpen to be honest.

Am I the only one who thinks Hughes/Melky/lower-level prospect for Johan Santana would be a steal? When Santana was put on the market, I was convinced that two of the three kids would have to go, plus Cano. I guess it's all about expectations.

And I'm thinking I might be the only Yankee fan delighted at what Hank is doing, and I don't think Cashman or the baseball guys are being marginalized at all (if Cashman wasn't involved, Mattingly would be the Yankee manager right now, not Girardi). I don't believe that the announcement that Andy's coming back 12 hours after Hank made his ultimatum is a coincidence.

If the Yankees rescind their offer because of Pettitte's return who would want the Sox to get Santana if the Twins take the Sox's offer on Crisp and Lester and Lowrie? Santana is a need for the Yankees. And only a want for the Sox.

People in both Boston and NY seem to be forgetting that Santana is the best pitcher in baseball.

I can understand Yankee fans wanting to not give up 2-3 of the young arms and Melky... and I can understand Red Sux fans wanting to not give up Ellsbury and Lester plus a Masterson-or-equal-prospect, but if the Yanks can get Santana for Hughes and Melky or if the RS can get him for Lester/Crisp/a prospect or Ellsbury/Masterson/a prospect, then YOU DO IT RUNNING AWAY.

In no way would either of those trades be "mortgaging the future". Especially in the Yankee's case... I love Andy Petitte too, but he's not a No. 1 pitcher... neither is Wang or the 2008 version of Joba.

This team needs an ace. Period.
