Right now, the deal Steinbrenner wants to make is to bring Randy Johnson to the Yankees to shore up his tottering pitching staff, the one that even $183 million couldn&#039;t fix.And if he has any hope of doing that, he&#039;s going to need Bud Selig&#039;s blessing.

Over the past week, Steinbrenner - who abhors, rightly, the very concept of the luxury tax Selig jammed down his throat in 2002, and even retained attorney David Boies to explore the possibility of suing MLB - has been overtly jockeying to worm his way into Bud&#039;s good graces.

In fact, the kissy-fest has worked both ways. Two weeks ago, Steinbrenner gushed publicly about how much he would &quot;love&quot; to have Randy Johnson, a clear violation of baseball&#039;s tampering rules if ever there was one. I&#039;m not saying Melky will develop into Hunter, however please look at Hunter&#039;s first 2 years as a starter in Minny and then look at Melky&#039;s first 2 years as a starter in NY. 

Melky, at a younger age put up better numbers than Hunter. In fact, it&#039;s not even close.</description>

What if Hank told Jorge to hold a press conference to say, &quot;If I were Hank, I&#039;d give the Twins until Monday night to make up their minds.&quot;  And then Hank decided to set a deadline?  You know that Jorge is stupid enough to allow someone to put him up to something like that.</description>

		<description>I&#039;m not saying I know the tampering rule, and I&#039;m sure it&#039;s complicated and outcomes are very fact driven. But isn&#039;t the tampering rule designed to protect team owners from having player negotiations tainted by offers dangled directly to players without the owners&#039; knowledge, permission and/or a chance to counter the &quot;secret&quot; offer in open, arms-length  negotiations? 

It seems a bit odd then to talk about tampering when the guy who owns Santana&#039;s contract has authorized his GM to enter into face to face negotiations with a number of teams for the purpose of trading the player in question. Santana&#039;s agent and Santana know very well who is interested in him. And as far as I can tell, all Hank has said is that he&#039;s very interested in acquiring Santana for the right price and that he&#039;s not going to be jerked around. Wouldn&#039;t that be quite clear to the Twins&#039; owner by now, seeing as they are in the middle of a second or third week of serious negotiations over Santana? How does something that painfully obvious and innocuous give the Yankees an unfair advantage and put the Twins at a disadvantage? In other words, no blood, no foul.</description>
