Update from Nashville

Peter Abraham
December
3

The Yanks and Twins are meeting tonight. Hank Steinbrenner, quiet all day, told an AP reporter at Legends Field that he expected some sort of conclusion.

The Yankees and Red Sox have not budged from their offers, I’m told. Theo Epstein said he was willing to let the process play out as long as it takes.

It could be a long night. I’ll keep you posted once something happens.

I hope we keep Hughes. Hope to god.

  2. rodg12

Does that mean Hank’s not in Nashville Pete?

  3. ~Adam.

Give Bill Smith a wedgy, Brian!!!

  4. bphill

    hahaha adam….or a swiirlie…:-P

  5. IronCaballo4

My worry is that if this deal goes down, our bullpen will stink like broccoli farts

  6. Ben

Thanks pete you’re great you’re making much more exciting to be a yankee fan. at least they can’t trade you. lol.

  7. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Guess I’m staying up till 2 AM again

  8. kyle s

    The suspense is killing me!

  9. We Miss Paulie

Pete, this makes baseball fun all year long. Thanks!

  10. ab71

C’mon Cashman, get this done on our terms!

    Good work Peter!

  11. bphill

Pete…can i get a cell phone call…i won’t be around the computer but won’t be able to sleep without knowing what is going on….thanks :-)

  12. JDnotDrew

You got your red bull Pete? Sounds like you’ll need it.

  13. Bob

Am I the only one wearing out the refresh button my computer today? lol

  14. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX")

Rebecca I finally picked up my gift thanks :)

and I guess I better put on a pot of coffee tonight, I can see it now 2AM BREAKING NEWS Yankees agree to terms to negotiate w/ Johan Santana or BREAKING NEWS Red Sox agree to throw Bucholz in the deal but not Lester & Ellsbury.

  15. Mike

yeah let me get a phone call too. i’d like to go to bed but don’t want to miss anything. i’ll leave it on :)

  16. ~Adam.

I get the feeling Peter’s not the only one stalking Cashman and Smith right now.

  17. Prete Funk Era

I think I smell a text alert feature coming soon to this blog?

  18. B. Stanley

Good thing I’m going to be up till 5 anyway. Thanks for making the off-season just as exciting as the regular season Mr. Abraham, sir.

  19. Matthew Bleiberg

I doubt a deal will get done tonight. One of these teams is going to sleep on the conditions if they get that far.

  20. SavePhilHughes

    Save Phil Hughes.

  21. Corey

Just get it done Cash money. Johan will bring in alot of money to the organization and do we really know how good Hughes will be in the long run?

  22. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX")

I think Jacolby might have to issue a restraining order on Bill Smith seeing how he wants him and only him :)

  23. Mike

yeah text option would be real nice. I have one right now through somewhere, but its so delayed. I hear most of the stuff days or atleast hours before it finally comes through my phone.

  24. myrtlebeachfan

Pete take a break. Without you watching the game, we’re losing.

WE NEED YOU TO WATCH THIS GAME NOW!!!!!!!

Ok, I lied. The Patriots will win handily, despite the 17-10 score. But still, it would be nice to know you’re enjoying their win.

  25. Matthew Bleiberg

Sorry to say this, but a deal will not get done tonight. The Twins want to take it slow, and will not budge on a trade tonight. If anything, they’ll have to talk to the Sox as well.

  26. bphill

Brandon…. I think the Headline will read this:

BREAKING NEWS: GEORGE STEINBRENNER KILLS BILL SMITH WITH HIS CANE…DETAILS TO COME

  27. Bob

    F the Patriots.

It’s time for all New England sports to go back in the toilet.

    No offense Pete. lol

  28. Ben

    GOO RAVENS!!!

    And SAVE PHIL HUGHES

  29. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

In the history of my entire life I NEVER thought I would applaud Willis McGahee, however you spell it.

  30. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX")

bphill, more like “BREAKING NEWS” JOHAN SANTANA LEAVES CHOKE MARKS ON BILL SMITH AFTER A DISPUTE MORE LATER..btw deal still not done ;)

  31. bphill

Can we start a phone tree here…spread the word.

  32. rodg12

    You spelled it perfect Rebecca….

  33. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Brandon: hope you enjoy it!

  34. Uncle Vito

This deal will happen tonight…Thanks Phil…but we are going with Santana…mark my words and keep checking …Santana will be a Yankee before the rooster crows…

  35. hughesian bias

i posted this on the wrong thread…..

so let me get this straight:

if the yankees don’t strike a deal by tonight, does that mean hughes is off the table?

what i took from hank’s previous comment over the weekend is that the hughes + melky + prospect package is the best one we’re gonna offer, and that’s what the deadline is for. after tonight, hughes is off the table and if the twins still want to trade santana to us, it’ll come at a much lesser price.

is that right? or just wishful thinking from a hughes fan?

it would make sense, though… the yankees back out, fake a play at another pitcher (haren, et al) and then the red sox back out. after the twins realize they’re gonna get two compensation picks for santana, they come crawling back to the yankees for less than whats being offered now.

they wouldn’t go to the sox, cause honestly, they don’t need santana like we do and would offer up even less than our second (sub-par) deal.

  36. myrtlebeachfan

Bob, i think that you fail to realize how many Yankees fans also like the Patriots. There are many of us out there. It’s ok to root for them. I root for the Pats, Celtics, Bruins, and Boston College. I am a diehard Yankee fan, however, and the Yankees are far more important to me. But “gosh darnit”, I love my Patriots and Celtics.

  37. RSM

The Pats are losing. Maybe it’s a sign :-)

  38. CB

I don’t see the twins relenting on their demands so early in the off season.

While the yankees may need santana the twins will do everything possible to not make a mistake. I think it’s too early for them to give up.

But we’ll see. I don’t think either the yanks or the sox relent.

Quite honestly, its not a bad thing for either team if the status quo continues – as long as the other team isn’t getting santana both may be ok waiting on their offers.

  39. Nolan

Yup, Santana will be a Yankee very soon.

  40. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX")

    Rebecca, I will :)

  41. William

i dont think theres gonna be alot of chemistry if the team is full of high paid superstars….

  42. Mike R.

    rodg12 December 3rd, 2007 at 10:29 pm

    You spelled it perfect Rebecca….

Of course she did. She got a perfect 6 on the writing portion of her GRE. :D

  43. Phil

It’s good that Cash will be in the meeting and Hank will be in Tampa. Watch Stealth Cash fix things.

  44. Bob

Wouldn’t it be nice if that tightwad Carl Pohlad just gave Santana a fair extension and the Twins kept him? We’d still have our uys and wouldn’t have to worry about Boston getting him. Must really suck being a fan of a team whose owner cares so little he’d contract the team for the right price.

  45. rodg12

I did see that posted earlier Mike R. Good point.

  46. Nolan

I got below average on my writing portion :(

  47. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

See, as a Jets fan, it’s my duty to hate on the Patriots.

though there was that one time we needed the patriots to beat miami to win the AFC East and get into the playoffs, and they did at the last second, and that was the first football game I had ever gone to…

  48. CaptainsCorner

Ofcourse Theo wont pressure the Twins to take his bull offer, because he knows they would be stupid if they accepted it for an ace player. He is saying take my crappy players if you want.

  49. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Mike R: I failed spelling in grade school.

Nolan: I got below average in the math. It evens out.

    This from ESPN:

BoSox GM says no big deals being held up by waiting

    Associated Press

    Updated: December 3, 2007, 10:16 PM ET

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The New York Yankees appeared set to pull out of trade talks for Johan Santana unless the Minnesota Twins were prepared to strike a deal late Monday night.

“I want to get it done by tonight, one way or another,” Yankees senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner said as he left Legends Field, the team’s spring training home in Tampa, Fla. “I’m waiting for a meeting in Nashville, and then Brian will give me a call.”

Hank’s inexperience is showing.Boston is smart enough to not let its tongue get in the way of a deal. Like Michael Corleone said, “It’s only business.”

  51. Big Joe

    Here’s how it goes down.

Twins miss Hank’s deadline and ultimatum meaning we will no longer negotiate…then Smith comes back begging through a Goldman Sachs partner to rekindle negotiations. Hank takes over the negotiation from Cash and instead of Hughes, Melky and Gonzo, Offers Hughes, Melky and the entire Scranton AAA team.

That’ll teach those bad boys to mess with Hank. He taught Boras and he’ll teach them too! Yeah that’s the ticket!

  52. Giuseppe Franco

I’m betting the Yanks have all but pulled out of the Santana sweepstakes because of Pettitte’s return.

I have little doubt that Cashman and the Steinbrenners will be content going to war with Pettitte, Wang, Moose, Joba, Hughes, and Kennedy. Horne will get his chance at some point as well.

I think Santana is staying in Minnesota for the time being.

  53. Boston Dave

    PLEASE get Johan!!!

Hank, I will help chip in for the new deal…

  54. NY 23

How Do , Yankees Fans have Faith Cashman will do right by us . 11pm on ESPN 2 Yankees get Santana without giving up Hughes . I have my fingers crossed .
    Very Nice !!!!

  55. el comaduce

Ahhhh a jet fan and a yankee fans, about half the blog just sighed…

  56. Nolan

The math parts are the only ones I am capable of. I no good at this english thing.

  57. hughesian bias

HAHAH big joe, it’s all so clear to me now!

  58. Big Joe

hughesian bias – happy to be of service

  59. #9

Call me shallow but I’m paying more attention to these meetings in Nashville than the Middle East peace meetings that Bush held in Annapolis last week.

    *sigh*

  60. The Fallen Phoenix

Drive 4-5, placing and enforcing a deadline on negotiations actually isn’t all that bad a thing, depending on the circumstances. Things change when negotiators realize there is an end in sight for a game: to provide a crude, but useful example, it is all but guaranteed that, in a prisoner’s dilemma, the rational outcome would lead to both sides defecting rather than cooperating, whereas an infinitely iterated prisoner’s dilemma (real world equivalent: you don’t know when the game is going to end), cooperation becomes far more possible/likely.

Incidentally, it’s rather amusing that, now that the Winter Meetings are heating up, we’re getting into collective bargaining and auctioning in my college game theory class. I’m learning lots of useful nuggets that are easily applied to the current situations going on in baseball (which is itself a perfect laboratory for game theoretic-models).

  61. JDnotDrew

Bob-In all fairness to Twins they offered 4yrs./20 milldo. That’s a pretty good deal but Santana(after seeing Zito’s contract) wants six years and mo money. Tough to go six years on a pitcher but he is Santana so maybe your right.

  62. ~Adam.

I still say Cash should give him a wedgy til Smith gives up Santana.

  63. #9

“How Do , Yankees Fans have Faith Cashman will do right by us .”

    Who is Faith Cahman?

  64. Big Joe

Anyone else starting to feel like Hank calls BCash into a room once a week and tells him what he will and will not be allowed to do for that week. Seems Hank likes to emasculate him at every chance he gets. I bet he leaves soon because he could help an organization that wants to be run right.

  65. jay destro

Faith Cashman is on tour with Hannah Montana

Who’s Bush? the baked beans maker?

  67. whozat

“Hank’s inexperience is showing.Boston is smart enough to not let its tongue get in the way of a deal.”

Nope. Hank knows that, if the Yankees showed no inclination to walk away from the table, the cost would continue to creep up and up all offseason.

Walking away from the table right now is the right call. If they come back, so be it. The Sox won’t up their offer without the Yanks there, and their current package isn’t saleable to the Twins fanbase.

  68. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    el comaduce: What?

#9 You’re not alone. Thing is, the ME thing has been done, and done again, and nothing is new. Not (quite) so with the Winter Meetings.

  69. mike f

the uber-mets fan and blogger matt cerrone claims that santana prefers to play for the red sox, followed by the mets with the yanks being his third choice. sounds suspicious to me.

  70. Nolan

Wow, you got a 6 on the writing section? Where do you wanna go to grad school?

  71. Corey

I dont know why you people think we’re happy just settling for pettitte…you gotta thing somewhat long term here…..

2009 would potentially be Wang, Hughes, Chamberlain, Kennedy and ???? Igawa? Unless all 3 prospects turn out well thats a terrible way to open the new stadium if you ask me.

  72. Yaya

Hank should stop believing that he is his father…His father was a man who built an empire…Hank is still fed with a silver spoon.

  73. Mike R.

    #9 December 3rd, 2007 at 10:42 pm

“How Do , Yankees Fans have Faith Cashman will do right by us .”

    Who is Faith Cahman?

Faith Hill and Brian Cashman, and her being an old fashioned country girl she took his last name.

  74. Joe from Long Island

So let me get this straight…If the negotiations for Santana fall through, we’re stuck with Phil Hughes?

    UPDATE FROM MLBTRADERUMORS.COM

“UPDATE, 12-3-07 at 9:41pm: Matthew Cerrone says the Twins have moved on from the Yankees and Red Sox, and are calling other teams to discuss Santana. Tyler Kepner says the Yanks have interpreted the Twins’ nonresponse to their offer as a rejection.”

Twins are plain stupid, there is no team that can match the Yankees or Sox offers.

    Johan Santana Rumors: Monday

UPDATE, 12-3-07 at 9:41pm: Matthew Cerrone says the Twins have moved on from the Yankees and Red Sox, and are calling other teams to discuss Santana. Tyler Kepner says the Yanks have interpreted the Twins’ nonresponse to their offer as a rejection.

well, Nice talking baseball with you folks

Have fun winning with your current pitching staff

  77. Bill

The deal is over…Twins are looking at other trade partners.

We get to keep the kids.

The deal is over. Kepner of the Times has the story.

  78. Mike R.

I guess that means that in 2009 we’ll have both Santana AND Hughes in our rotation. Excellent.

  79. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

I am never going to forget today.

    just, for the record.

  80. Bill

Exactly unless he gets traded to another team, but it is looking like not the Sox or Yankees.

This is what I wanted all along…Cant give up the kids…Not acceptable.

  81. ~Adam.

2009 Hughes AND Santana. We get to have our cake, and eat it too!

  82. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX")

    nice knowing you Smith :D

  83. bphill

Do the Twins SERIOUSLY think that they will get a better offer from another team?

  84. Nolan

As long as he doesn’t go to Boston I dont care.

  85. Phil

So the Twins are beating the drums for all the other teams that can give up top prospects and a 150M extension? That should be fun. What a load of amateur crap.

  86. Mike

Yes excellent. They better pull out of negotiations. Doing so will make Boston lower offer, if anything; definitely not increase it because where they are at now is not enough. And I still don’t buy it that Johan will go anywhere. The guy wants to win and he won’t if he goes anywhere other than NY or Boston. I’m perfectly content going into next season with Pettitte, Hughes, Wang, Joba, Kennedy, Mussina, etc.

  87. CB

Random question I’m not sure about for the group –

Does anyone know the last time a prospect who was ranked as Baseball America as top pitching prospect (under the age of 25) was traded in any kind of deal before completing his first year in the majors?

I can’t think of one of the top of my head.

That puts this Hughes deal in bit of a different context, perhaps. I really can’t think of one.

In 2006 Dice K was ranked first phil the first pitcher after him. I’m not counting Dice K.

    Just curious.

(Guy like paul wilson who was traded after he bounced around doesn’t count. someone traded before he made it to the bigs)

  88. #9

“I am never going to forget today.”

    Me neither!

    What day is it anyway?

  89. Big Joe

Does this conjure memories of being told Torre is going to Tampa to accept the manager job? I mean we were told it was done. This thing will sit out there until Hank decides he has to have him, then it will be over.

But count me as happy the kids are still in the clubhouse.

  90. Bill

I cant see a team putting together an offer than compares to the centerpieces of Phil or Jacoby. But then again, it could happen.

  91. whozat

I think Cash is positioning Kyle for a trade.

“No, he’s great, no we want to keep him, lots of people are asking though!”

If someone begins to get serious about him, they can act reluctant to squeeze a little more value out.

  92. Jonathon

The deal is over…Twins are looking at other trade partners.

We get to keep the kids.

The deal is over. Kepner of the Times has the story.

Other than A. Rod re-signing with the Yankees, this is the best news of the off-season so far.

Please let Hankee stick to his guns on this one.

  93. Mike R.

    ~Adam. December 3rd, 2007 at 10:50 pm

2009 Hughes AND Santana. We get to have our cake, and eat it too!

    LMAO

  94. fleas

“”I want to get it done by tonight, one way or another,” Yankees senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner said as he left Legends Field, the team’s spring training home in Tampa, Fla. “I’m waiting for a meeting in Nashville, and then Brian will give me a call.”"

Uh, where in this does that say there *is* a meeting tonight… nice fumble Pete. Geez!

  95. yanks

    For the Record

The yanks shout their mouth off,
and the yanks are assuming that because they did not recive a response that the twins declined the offer..
    johan will get traded…
and now we dont have to worry about the yank and their dumba$$ ownership

  96. EnterSandman

I can’t help but feel/hope this talk of the Twins searching out other teams is a final effort to extract a better third player from the Yankees, I just can’t see who else could meet both their and Santana’s demands.

  97. Boston Dave

Dodgers have the prospects and the money to get Santana.

If you dont want Santana, thats fine. But dont assume he will hit free agency.

I agree that as long as Boston doesnt get him its not as bad.

  98. Buddy Biancalana

I think that the Twins are keeping Johan, & now that Andy’s back, he will win his 1st Cy Young this year. Welcome back Phil & Melky!

  99. Big Joe

This won’t happen this summer. We will either know that Hughes has “it” and we don’t need another ace or we will know that he doesn’t have “it” and Minny won’t want him. It’s this offseason or wait for Free Agency (if he gets there)

  100. jay destro

There is no Kepner story, this is all troll bs based on Cerrone’s bullshot story

  101. CB

Sorry didn’t see the prior posts before my question -

The twins are absolute idiots. Good luck to them.

The yankees move on. Thank goodness for Pettite.

  102. Uncle Vito

  103. bphill

Phil Hughes wants a hug right now. He is peeing in his pants.

  104. whozat

“2009 would potentially be Wang, Hughes, Chamberlain, Kennedy and ???? Igawa?”

Um…fortunately, if Santana ISN’T traded, he’ll be a free agent. Ta daaaa!

Also, Sabathia might be on the market. Also, guys like Horne, Clippard, Melancon might be ready to take on the back end of the rotation. Also, if you’re just looking for a back-end guy, AND you have depth…you can go after someone like Harden in trade that’s high-risk, high-reward.

  105. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX")

MLB.com reports that the Nationals are shopping Austin Kearns and Felipe Lopez for starting pitching.

Kearns is more expendable after Monday’s trade for Elijah Dukes gave the Nationals four outfielders for three spots. Washington is said to be interested in Mike Pelfrey of the Mets and Kevin Slowey of the Twins

    com’on Omar they’re giving you Felipe Lopez !!! :D :D

  106. Agent47

If the reports are true. Cashman must be happy man today. He gets to keep his young guys. I am happy too.

  107. CB

“There is no Kepner story, this is all troll bs based on Cerrone’s bullshot story”

Not true. Below is the link.

“The Yankees and the Twins had not met as of 7:30 p.m., and it was obvious that the Twins were not eager to accept the Yankees’ offer of Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera and a midlevel prospect. Privately, the Yankees have interpreted the Twins’ nonresponse as a rejection of the offer and a signal that Minnesota intends to keep Santana.”

Um. Are any of you all watching the football game?

  112. Steve Balboni

nobody else has the players to offer as the Yankees and Redsux, this deal will still get done. Smith is trying to get both teams to up their current offers by giving the appearance that they are looking elsewhere. The Yankees have said they were out of of other deals only to complete the trade a week or so later. This might not take that long but that negotiating ploy is always out there.

  113. minnysota

    come on guys

you really think a rotation of
    petite
    wang
    mussina
    igawa
    hughes
    kennedy
    jaba
is going to bring you a ring this year?

its an old rotation with a bunch of young guns
, in experienced, going to be some growing pains..
and with growing pains.. honestly.. maybe no playoffs this year for yankee land..

  114. Nolan

Ummm this makes no sense. The article says they hadn’t met and yet Lohud reports they are meeting now…

  115. JDnotDrew

Twins might get the players but Santana won’t get those years money from any other team IMO.

  116. jay destro

As of 7:30, look at what time pete met with cashman… cash had just gotten there.

    Jeezus.

  117. gayle

It truly is amazing that somneone can post something with no link and everyone belives it as fact. This is the world of the internet. Hello people perhaps you should check it out before you take something as gospel from someone who can post anything they want. All you have to do is go the the New York Times site and you will see there is no story there that says anything close to that.

  119. mike f

yeah rebecca, kinda surprising huh? they are tossing brady around like a rag doll

  120. Todd

Kepner said Yanks & Twins had not met and it was 7:30. Pete had Cash & Twins meeting 10:14

  121. A-Point

I don’t see this as a bad thing.

  122. jay destro

The Kepner thing is a NON-STORY it’s all speculation based on the fact that cashman met with a few people.

  123. CB

For everyone who thought the yankees were being played this is what Kepner wrote:

“In any case, the Yankees’ sense Monday was that the Red Sox were not serious about acquiring Santana for themselves, offering just enough to force the Yankees to give more but not enough to truly appeal to the Twins.”

That’s a pretty good reason to walk away from a negotiation. When the other party isn’t negotiating in good faith its time to call it a night.

  124. Nolan

Hold on to your Hughes everybody this isn’t done yet.

  125. berra8

it’s pretty obvious — the yankees and twins had not met as of 7:30 this evening. pete is reporting a meeting is scheduled. there probably is one going on right now.

kepner’s speculation that the non-response means rejection is probably correct. but it doesn’t mean definitely.

  126. JDnotDrew

Minny-They made it this year with less.

  127. Joba the Great

I think we’ve seen the relative skills of Jon Heyman today. He’s produced absolutely nothing thus far. He’s good for firing some incendiary barbs around, but if Randy Levine isn’t spoon-feeding him scoops, he’s not much of a reporter. What a fraud.

  128. jay destro

and by a few people. i mean 10 that cashman invited, one being our own Pete

  129. VOIII

Now we are getting our Yankee info from a Mets blog? Come on don’t be so gullible

  130. Mike R.

Boston Dave – I agree that LA has the prospects to land Santana easily, but what in their history makes you think they would be willing to give a pitcher, any pitcher, 6 years $135 M?

  131. whozat

“Dodgers have the prospects and the money to get Santana.”

Yes, but they still need a big bat. Will they have/be willing to trade the pieces they have left after they acquire said bat?

True, Santana might be traded somewhere else after all this, but if he’s a Twin tomorrow, I think he’s a twin until the trade deadline at least. Unless someone comes in with an offer that’s just stupid.

NASHVILLE — With the Yankee’s self-imposed deadline approaching, the Twins and Yankees were getting nowhere Monday night in their attempt to complete a deal for Johan Santana. So the Yankees were again making noises that they might pull out of the Santana talks for good.

According to baseball officials who were aware of the talks, the Twins again asked the Yankees on Monday night for pitcher Ian Kennedy — a pitcher the Yankees have insisted for several days that they wouldn’t trade — as the third player in their proposed deal. The Yankees apparently turned down that proposal immediately.

The Yankees have held firm since Friday that if pitcher Phil Hughes and outfielder Melky Cabera were part of their offer, the third player heading for Minnesota would have to be a second-tier prospect. So the highly regarded Kennedy headed a list of “untouchables” that included Joba Chamberlain, pitcher Alan Horne and outfielders Austin Jackson and Jose Tabata.

But the Twins also haven’t budged since Friday. They wanted Kennedy then, and they still do. So unless one side or the other gives, it now appears a trade that once appeared inevitable could blow up for good.

  175. OhioYank

Why not throw Farnsworth in and get Nathan, too (lol)? Cash says “everyone” is asking about him … I remember hating to see Eric Milton go but Knoblauch helped the Yankees win a couple championships, didn’t he? Milton didn’t exactly change the face of baseball. How about Sterling Hitchcock? I was frustrated when the Yanks let he and Russ Davis go to Seattle in 1996, but that move sure panned out (Martinez, Nelson). Getting a player of Santana’s magnitude is a once in 10 years opportunity. It’s worth the risk because it would bump Wang to a less pressurized No. 2 role, Pettitte to No. 3 and helps ease in both Chamberlin and Kennedy.

i’m genuinely surprised the twins would pass up the chance to get phil hughes. i know that he’s just a prospect, but it’s very rare that pitching prospects of that quality are available.

  184. Big Joe

Philips screwed one NY team now he’s trying to validate the destruction of the other. He is a hack on talent evaluation and should shut his piehole. Can you say Mo Vaughn?

  185. CB

“well im here to let you know that the twins draft high school kids.. and we can sign them”

not true at all. this past draft by far the highest rated high school player was Rick Porcello.

He was uniformly considered the best high school pitching prospect since Josh Becket.

The twins passed on him because he was a Boras client demanding to be paid over slot.

The twins passed and he fell to detroit who gave him a 7 million dollar bonus.

The twins drafted Ben Revere – a very fast, light hitting high school outfielder instead – he was considered the biggest stretch of the draft.

    Nowhere even close to porcello

    Enjoy those picks.

  199. susan mullen

I’ve noticed a Santana camp angle is to keep calling Phil Hughes just a “prospect.” Then they go on to say Santana is a sure thing. The reverse is more likely true. The Twins are dying to get Phil Hughes. The Yankees have proven they cannot win with high-priced mercenaries looking to cash in. Especially pitchers. They made an investment in young players and promised me every day for 2 seasons that these guys were my future. I want what they promised me and what I’ve already seen on the Yankee major league playing field. We have a star pitcher in Phil Hughes but he’s younger than Pohlad’s guy and about $150,000,000 cheaper and less likely to break down due to years of reliance as a team’s ace. And by the way, save Melky Cabrera too.

I think the Yankees can live with the rotation as is. Minnesota wants too much, just like the Marlins want too much for Cabrera, and the A’s want too much for Haren.

  243. Buddy Biancalana

Funny how Phillips can’t get a job with any team, shows he must have had some mad skillz as a GM.

  244. CaptainsCorner

The Twins are a bunch of fools. They really thought they would get 2 #1 pitching prospects and a CF. I don’t think they ever had any intention of trading Santana. Just waste everyone’s time. Also what a moron Phillips is..Why don’t the Yanks just trade Joba and Cano with Kennedy and Hughes? I wonder why he is not a GM anymore, let me just trade the farm system for 1 player. If you watched Olney’s face he was looking at him like are you stupid? That is how you wind up with no farm system and get fleeced(like the Yanks used too) when you act like the great Phillips.

  245. OhioYank

I lost some sleep when the Yanks traded Sterling Hitchcock, another fine prospect, along with Russell Davis, in 1996 to the M’s. That moved worked out and so did moving another solid lefty, Eric Milton, for Knoblauch a few years later. Santana takes pressure off both Wang and Pettitte and he buys time for Chamberlin and Kennedy, assuming Hughes is included. Look at what Beckett’s presence met to Boston this postseason. Getting a hurler like Santana is a once in 10 years possibility. In addition, he’d be a cult hero in New York’s hispanic community ….

  246. Boston Dave

  254. CB

    Boston Dave,

I completely agree. I think the main thing here is what are you exactly trading for.

If Santana was signed for 2 or 3 years even at something like $15-20 million per maybe he’d be worth it.

But all the yankees are doing her is trading for the rights for one year of santana and that exclusive negotiating window.

There is no way they can trade 2 of their top 3 prospects for what they are actuallly getting.

They just can’t. Losing both of them would be devastating to the team for the next 10 years – losing one ok. But not both.

UHG!! i wish the pats would just lose already! this and the santana stuff…. sports have been good to me today

  261. Sherri

My fantasy football league started playoffs this week and so far my team’s 25 points ahead, but the other team has Brady for QB. I am so hoping we win this round!

  262. #9

    OJ Brady…

  263. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

HOW DO YOU LEAVE BRADY WIDE OPEN!?!

ARE YOU TRYING TO THROW THIS GAME?!

    Okay.

    Breath. Optimistic.

  264. VOIII

    BD,
Kennedy and Hughes for Santana is a close one? Add up the win potential of Hughes and Kennedy and then add up the win potential of say Santana and Moose…I would bet on the Kids in that race. Oh, and ah… they would cost about 30 million less next season… Now throw in the fact that we would loose our starting CF’er in that deal…Yeah that’s a tough call buddy…

  265. Mike

unbelieveable. stopped them twice and didnt matter because of DEFENSIVE timeout and false start.

  266. Mike

unbelieveable. stopped them twice and didnt matter because of DEFENSIVE timeout and false start.

  267. CaptainsCorner

Obviously they never intended to trade him if Boston has Lester or Ellsbury on the table and they are asking the Yanks for Hughes and Kennedy when Hughes beats that package alone. The count down is 27 minutes until the muzzle falls off Hank again. He will not be happy if they did ask for Kennedy and he has every right not to be we will find out no way he can keep quite. AwWwwWW they had to put Gammons to sleep already is that why he isn’t on this show?

  268. Big Joe

Jesus plays for the Ravens? Cool!

  269. Rob NY

perfect season on the line…. KILL THEIR PERFECT SEASON RAY LEWIS!

  270. Mike

This just in from Nashville newspaper:

  312. Joe Mama

At least the Ravens covered the spread

  313. Rob NY

living in boston at times like this sucks…

  314. Boston Dave

why wouldnt the pats not kick onsides?

  315. Dan

I’m really starting to feel that the yanks should walk away from this deal (and I was initially for it, mind you)

The Yankees would benefit from trading Melky for a solid reliever in order to strengthen the bullpen, and signing Aaron Rowand.

  316. mel

    #9,

I heard it’s for a player to be determined. George Steinbrenner’s cryogenically preserved body.

  317. Mike R.

Do you think they could use that time out that their coached burned right around now?

  318. Boston Dave

Pete G – I agree to an extent… but the Pats dont look so good the last 2 weeks.

  319. rodg12

“why wouldnt the pats not kick onsides?”

Has anyone stopped to consider that the Yankees are stupid enough to not make this trade, move on, and trade for a lesser pitcher (Bedard, Haren, etc.)

  332. 27for27

why do the patriots get so many calls in their favor?

  333. Rob NY

bobcat says the yankees cant get kazmir but i want him so bad lol

  334. Rob

That was some serious pass interference on the Ravens. That doesn’t get called, but the 4th down weak-ass holding gets called???

  335. Mike

of course it would end that way, as if the patriots didnt have enough go their way. im so pissed. i hate the patriots as much as the red sox

  336. Pete G.

boston dave, come on even the yankees look like crap some times, nah maybe its just because my jets should call it a season and im looking for some solice

  337. Joba the Great

Time to turn over to ESPN2 and watch Ravich, Kurtijan and the Human Heat Lamp.

  338. Jonathon

From the Jayson Stark posting @ 11:39P

Meanwhile, officials from other clubs said some Yankees baseball personnel at the meetings have continued to agonize over the inclusion of Hughes in their offer, out of fear Hughes could come back to haunt them for years. So clearly, the decision to include Hughes in the first place was far from unanimous.

Cashman admitted there’s a fear that players he might trade could win Cy Young Awards for another team.

“I’m definitely fully vested in a lot of the young talent. You get attached to it,” Cashman said, according to the AP.

There is no question that the cooler heads in the Yankees organization have no desire to trade Hughes, rightfully so.

Hankee should go back to his little ponies and let the baseball people do their job.

Why does history have to repeat itself?

  339. SavePhilHughes

    What a nutty game

Kennedy for Haren wouldn’t be stupid at all.

  346. whereisbobcat

rob ny where is bobcat posting

  347. Mike

Why do the Patriots get so many calls in their favor???? If you havent figured that one out by now, you never will. The way George Mitchell headed the MLB steroids investigation, so Papi and manny and curt would be protected. or the way minnesota handed them garnett, randy moss, and soon Johan.

  348. Catherine

Never has a football team been so good and so little people cared

  349. ThatWasMe

Patriots two close calls, vs the Eagles and the Ravens. Boller and Feeley, I somehow think they’re going down before season’s end.

  350. Pete G.

id have a better chance of beating the pats in a couple weeks, second team safty freshmen team my sopomore year in high school baby woooooo

  351. Rob NY

lol i dont know really not concerned about him just said that id prefer kazmir to santana yesterday and he commented that the rays wont deal with the yanks…. i tend to think money (and prospects) talks but hey

and allow me to say that a lot of people have gotten kind of bobcat crazy here … he seems like a cool guy but geez

  352. DC

So hard to root for a team from New England! Have to keep in mind Brady is a Yankee fan.

  353. 27for27

okay, I just found out Pettite is coming back! Why is no one talking about it?

  354. bartap

Steve Finley begging for a job on ESPN – this is the saddest thing I’ve seen in quite a while.

  355. Jonathon

Until he wears a Yankee cap on the sideline during the SuperBowl, he’s still one of the posterboys of a sports city I detest.

  357. Frank Discussion

Now I remember why I stopped watching football years ago, the endless penalties… this is a game Baltimore could have won.

They are kinda treating Finley like crap man, poor guy, ugh.

  359. mel

BUT, my son’s not applying to any schools in MASS.

  360. Matt

Brady actually isn’t a Yankee fan, he just wore the hat. He is actually a huge Dodgers fan.

  361. Jonathon

It’s a hard life to give up…guys try to hang on for as long as they can…and hey, Barry Bonds had to do the same thing last year…

  362. pat

Steve Philips actually made a good point! Kurkjian said the Twins can wait until July and still get a similiar deal than they could get now for Santana. Philips said if they wait until July, the teams who will be interested will be teams who are in contention and those teams will not be willing to give up multiple major league ready players because they will need them for the stretch run.

  363. Nolan

Am I right in assuming nothing more will happen tonight?

  364. rodg12

27for27 – we talked about it for about 500 post on some of Pete’s other posts….

  365. hughesian bias

it’s not whether he’s a cool guy or not, it’s just that he’s got the right info about all this trade nonsense. his posts are useful in trying to figure all of this out.

  366. hmmm

“okay, I just found out Pettite is coming back! Why is no one talking about it?”

go back about 8 threads ;)

  367. CaptainsCorner

Rob NY, Why would the Rays trade him they gave up so much to get him…haha

  368. Pete G.

they play in foxboro not boston, same difference, you know what im excited for Lacrosse championships in foxboro in may wooo, i know no one cares but i think its cool…….

  369. Sherri - Welcome Back, Andy!!!

Baltimore should have won this game.

  370. KC

Yea, I totally agree with Jonathan that Hank needs to stop dominating the scenes even though it’s his family money. Trading Hughes would eventually haunt us albeit many people saying that it’s not a sure deal that he would live up to his potential. Also, by the way Cashman has almost seemed reluctant to speak of things relating to the Yankees (Mo’s, Arod’s contracts), particularly about trading for Santana, he is most definitely unhappy with the prospect of trading Hughes. And for someone who’s traded for Pavano, Brown, etc., he probably learned from his mistakes ergo people should listen to him. Ultimately, I’m just frustrated that they offered to trade Hughes, and I am hoping that if nothing is accomplished tonight with the deal, then the Yankees should end negotiations or continue with a different package san Hughes.

  371. Mike

    Rich

You are either a fool, a red sox fan, or the same fool who guys by Rich on Waswatching.com

Im gonna go with the middle one. A NYJ guy could have his pants taken off, bent over, and inserted into during the play against his will, and no penalty flag is coming his way, so who are you kidding you troll

    a rotation of
    johan
    liriano
    baker
    slowey
    boof

is a more experienced and more dominant rotation then the yanks can put out there..
not to mention we have a bullpen.. and a closer..

    so, whatcha think now ?

    ________________________________________________
    OK. It’s official.

    You’re an idiot.

    You have:
    Santana. great start
Liriano. Could be another Santana..Could be another Joe
    Mays, if he stays healthy.
Bonser. snort, snicker. His only claim to fame is his
name, and, he had to have that legally changed
    from John to get that.
Baker: one year of nothing special, outside of one game.
Slowey: What experience/success does he have over Hughes?

    Bullpen: Nathan…maybe
Neshek. very good, for the first time in his
    career.
Rincon: The same guy that did a suspension for chemical
abuse, was traded and sent back because of
    shoulder issues.
    Reyes: Nothing special
Guerrier: Outstanding rookie. Does he repeat?
    The rest: Riggggghhhttt.

The Twins have question marks, and a lot of them, not the least of which may be an unhappy Santana, fears about Liriano (who will not work a full load)…rookies and nothing specials. Nathan may be gone, so Neshek replaces him, Guerrier moves up without a replacement.

NYY rotation has youth issues, but all 3 are top of the line. Mussina, who will be a long man/spot starter is hardly dog meat…he has ability to bounce back and will have proper rest. Wang and Pettitte will be the two of the best #2 pitchers around.
Closer? Ever hear of a guy named Rivera? The bullpen will have Ohlendorff, Farnsworth (maybe) and question marks, but, some great options coming in.

Basically, the Twins can count on Santana and Neshek, right now…Everything else is up in the air.

  374. mel

If the Twins keep Santana, he knows there’s only one team that’s going to pay him north of $20M.

  375. #9

“okay, I just found out Pettite is coming back! Why is no one talking about it?”

Are you also aware The Beatles broke up?

  376. Ice Age

I think the deadline ends at sunrise, this ain’t a Cinderella deal, I think if its dark outside the deal can still get done, so until its 5 am or something I cant be so sure the “deadline” has passed.

  377. Jonathon

By the clock on my cable box…it’s 12:00AM otherwise known as midnight…

Is the window closed? Is Hughes off the table? Can I go to bed with visions of Phil Hughes in pinstripes dancing in my head.

  378. bskul

deadline is over…is santana a yankee or what?? lol..what a joke

  379. Pete G.

i say go for bedard and keep franchise, i mean santana is great but look what melky did for the club house, we could get bedard for minor leaguers

  380. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX")

    WINDOW IS NOW CLOSED :D

  381. CaptainsCorner

I hope the Twins keep Santana and then next year they get a #1 pick and then the pick decides not to sign with them…and then they get nothing for him. Those greedy people…

  382. Nolan

Pete, getting Bedard will require just as many prospects as Santana does.

Yes, this deadline is a joke.

  383. whereisbobcat

bobcat is what life is all about

  384. hmmm

“Philips said if they wait until July, the teams who will be interested will be teams who are in contention and those teams will not be willing to give up multiple major league ready players because they will need them for the stretch run.”

    i disagree with phillips.

those teams trading for him would not have any intention of extending him. it would be a pure rental.

the difference is that EVERY team in contention could afford him at that point. so you’d have a TRUE bidding war, not 2 teams going head to head half-heartedly.

the teams would trade prospects for him, take their shot at a title, and then collect 2 draft picks. not a bad deal.

  385. Martini6196

Come on Pete any update for us who are staying up late even though we have to go to work tomorrow.

  386. LCâ„¢

    pat,
Johan said he wont accept a trade during the season.

  387. CB

It’s really telling that Minnesota was still insisting on Kennedy.

Not even Horne or Jackson. Kennedy.

They clearly see Melky as the “third” player in the deal.

If they are stuck on Kennedy despite being repeatedly told he’s off limits then there’s not a lot for them to discuss right now.

I’d bet Cashman is relieved. That Jason Stark article said Cashman was afraid he was trading away a future Cy Young award winner in Hughes.

  388. Martini6196

Bobcat is full of it……he played us all this past week.

  389. gayle

FYI Nashville is on Central time lol

  390. Ice Age

It’s funny how people think that if they are talking a deal and it strikes midnight Cashman is going to stuff everything into his briefcase frantically, run for the door, and leave the deal on the table because the deadline passed.

  391. Nolan

“Self-imposed deadline passes, but possible deal not ruled out”

That pretty much says it all.

  392. Pete G.

i can understand the twins not wanting to let him go for what they percieve is not his worth, you talking about the best, not one of the best, but the best pitcher in the league, oh and guess what he’s lefty too, and he’s even not a bad hitter, if i was them id be pushing the mets for reyes or wright with options on contracts and all that other buisness stuff

  393. #9

Tim Kurtijan’s voice has more cracks than a NYC sidewalk…

  394. Unionville, CT

    # 9 not only did the beatles break up, we landed on the moon

  395. Frank Discussion

Hope the Twins enjoyed their 15 minutes of fame. Minnesota shall now return to their regularly scheduled obscurity, already in progress.

Time to focus on what it would take to get Bedard, if Macphail is ready to shed his illusions.

  396. whereisbobcat

how do you know that wasn’t a fake bobcat. there are many fake bobcats out there

  397. Big Stein

Ok deadline is up, please tell us the Yanks and Sox both backed down, and Minnesota will keep Santana until at least the trade deadline. Last I heard they wanted Hughes/Melky/Kennedy still, if Hank did that I will hate him for eternity.

  398. hughesian bias

hate to change the subject but, brady is a yankees fan.

When asked by WEEI’s John Dennis “if you could own one player jersey, whose would it be?”, Brady replied, “Derek Jeter’s. I like how Derek Jeter does a lot of things.” In an episode of Inside the NFL, they prefaced a question, “Growing up a Yankee fan…”

he’s from michigan, and there are plenty of yankee fans out there, or everywhere, for that matter. you can’t hate the patriots, it’s like hating the yankees.

    it’s anti-american.

  399. Nolan

Actually Ice Age, at the stroke of midnight Hughes turns back into a pumpkin.

  400. Pete G.

nolan, i agree, but we are talking more middle of the road prospects with maybe a gardner thrown in, id give up ajax for bedard, i dont think hed comand a hughs or a melky, but maybe im underestimating bedards value

  401. Ice Age

    #9,

    ha ha thats a riot!

  402. mel

Guys, it’s like football or shopping. As long as the play gets off before the last tick or you get in the syoutore before closing time, you’re still in business.

Twins going for the Hail Mary pass and the Yankees are trying to kick the Twins out of the store because they want to put the jewelry in the safe and go home.

  403. LCâ„¢

Am I the only person hoping Minnesota holds onto Santana until next year?

  404. CB

I wonder if Pettite coming back may have saved Hughes and possibly Kennedy’s career’s as Yankees?

  405. Greg

Mets and Orioles are apparently really close with a deal involving Bedard. He probably wont be available much longer if even now.

  406. Vader

Just a hunch, but if you wake tomorrow and Santana is not a Yankee, we will have to wait until 2009. IMO that is the best thing that could happen and I also think this has alot to do with Andy deciding to play in 2008.

Hopefully, I can root for Hughes in a Yankee uniform for years to come, becuase I would hate for that #65 shirt to go to waste.

  407. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Deadline’s passed Pete, and I gotta get to sleep, so even just an itty bitty update would help out here!

  408. mel

    oops that’s “store”

  409. Rob NY

yeah i hope minny holds onto Santana too…. let him win 15 games out there and come on out to NYC again next year

  410. Boston Dave

A Red Sox official told Yahoo! Sports Tim Brown that he believed the Yankees and Twins were “very close” to completing a Johan Santana trade.

  411. Vader

Jason Stark at ESPN is reporting that this deal may be on life suppot.

  412. Chicago Dave

Boston now gets Santana for Coco Crisp, J.D Drew and a player to be named later. And I’ll be happy when they do! Keep Hughes (and Kennedy) in pinstripes for Chrissakes!!!

  413. Jonathon

It’s funny how people think that if they are talking a deal and it strikes midnight Cashman is going to stuff everything into his briefcase frantically, run for the door, and leave the deal on the table because the deadline passed.

I actually think that is what Cashman will do since he has been agonizing about having to include Hughes in the deal.

If this deal really is dead, no one is more relieved than Brian Cashman (and me).

  414. Vader

    support that is

  415. Ryan

    From Rotoworld:

A Red Sox official told Yahoo! Sports Tim Brown that he believed the Yankees and Twins were “very close” to completing a Johan Santana trade.
His seems to be the minority opinion at the moment, but all one side has to do is blink for a deal to get done, or at least for contract talks to start. The current guess is that Santana will seek a six-year extension worth around $150 million

  416. Pete G.

    LC -

i’ve been preaching that all along. screw santana. i want to keep the kids and then sign santana after next season. everyone knows the red sox aren’t serious about signing him (unless they get him for cheap) because they just won. there’s no need for more starting pitching on that team.

  418. pat

    hmmm
I don’t disagree with you but Kurkjian said Twins think they could get the same thing now as they could in July. They aren’t looking for prospects now, they are looking for major league ready.

  419. Martini6196

“The Yankees remained Santana’s most likely destination into the evening, because they have just enough disposable prospects to get him and all of the disposable income to carry the resulting contract extension.

Said one general manager: “I don’t think Boston’s really for real in that.”

Indeed, by late Monday night, a Red Sox official believed the Yankees and Twins were “very close” to completing the trade.”

    @ Greg

I’ve seen this too, but the Mets have to trade their remaining system for him. Gomez is a given in that deal, my guess is they will have to include F. Martinez aswell, maybe. Definitely have to give the O’s good pitching in return too, Humber doesn’t count, Pelfry does though.

  422. Boston Dave

    Ryan and Martini…

I beat ya to the punch :)

  423. hughesian bias

ok, that statement was released by a red sox official who’s probably an attention-grabbing whore. remember what bobcat said? you only hear what you want to hear.

it doesnt even matter who said it, either. everyone should know the politics that come into play during trade talks…

  424. mel

Wouldn’t Milledge been an attractive piece to trade to the Twins. Are Church and Snyder that important that they did that deal right away?

  425. Matt

    GreenBeret7-

You are so smart…Insult the Twins bullpen…The Twins are getting Glen Perkins, Nick Blackburn and Jesse Crain to add to an already dominant bullpen…Look at Denny Reyes’ 2006 season and tell me he’s not special…I would love for you to explain how Liriano is going to be a Joe Mays, I think Joe Mays would have been happy with half of Liriano’s stuff…Liriano is better than all the yankees pitchers…and will have a better future than Phil Hughes…Boof and Baker both got around 150 innings last year, that’s far more experience than any of your young pitchers…Also realize that we have already got rid of our worst hitters from last year and Nick Punto is not going to hit .210 again…We have a couple holes for our everyday players, but they will be filled…Looking at the Delmon Young deal, it looks like Bill Smith is gonna fill those holes long term…

  426. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX")

    Tyler Clippard has been traded

Nats Note: A source with knowledge of the situation said the Nationals traded reliever Jonathan Albaladejo to the New York Yankees in exchange for right-hander Tyler Clippard, pending physical examinations of both players. The 22-year-old, who went 3-1 with a 6.33 ERA filling in for the Yankees this year, has a 3.52 ERA over five minor league seasons. He should immediately be a contender for Washington’s rotation. Bowden did not return messages seeking comment on the deal.

    Damn you Boston Dave! Haha…..

  428. 27for27

    CB

Interesting point. He certainly did the Yankees a favor by reaching his decision before the winter meetings.

  429. Vader

    Who cares about the Mets?

  430. Chicago Dave

    # 9…Hey, that’s a Beatles tune! Serendipity indeed…

  431. hughesian bias

please take hughes off the table! the more i think about this deal the less i like it!

  432. Boston Dave

hughesian bias, nobody said it was for real… but it was said so we posted it.

if we werent listening to all the rumors, there would be zero posts in here….

one of these days, one of hte rumors will finally be right. just not sure which one that will be.

  433. Chris

    Greg,

The Mets don’t have the prospects to get Bedard. Don’t post silly nonsense.

  434. Jonathon

    That’s some scoop re: Clippard…if it’s legit

  435. Boston Dave

nite everyone… time to watch I Love NY II on dvr

  436. Vader

Anyone know anything about Jonathan Albaladejo?

  437. Boston Dave

    Vader,

just that he will be in the Nats bullpen next year…. is he being dealt?

  438. #9

“Anyone know anything about Jonathan Albaladejo?”

Only thing I know is I can’t pronounce his name.

  439. Fan

Brady’s not from Michigan. He’s from California. He went to school in Michigan.

  440. Rob NY

yeah Jonathan Albaladejo had 3 earned runs in 14.3 innings last year.. 0.62 whip

  441. Nolan

yeah hes being dealt to the yankees for clippard.

  442. ~Adam.

    Jonathan Albaladejo-

    14 IP
    3 ER
    2 BB
    12K
    .628 WHIP

  443. Vader

I don’t know where Brandon got his info, but it said he was coming for the Yankees Clippard. Is he a righy or lefty?

  444. What about Bob?

in 14.3 innings his era is 3

  445. jaffa

Just taking a quick look at Albaladejo’s numbers…. he looked very impressive in 14 games with the Nats ~14 innings 1.88 ERA 1.26 BB/9 .63 WHIP

  446. Chris

“Definitely have to give the O’s good pitching in return too, Humber doesn’t count, Pelfry does though.”

Pelfry is not considered good pitching. He could get by with a straight hard fastball in the minors, but his secondary stuff has been exposed in the majors. His stock has really taken a dive.

Pelfry and Humber tanking have killed the Mets.

  447. What about Bob?

    RHP

  448. Vader

If I din’t copy it, I probably couldn’t spell it.

  449. myrtlebeachfan

    Question…

Who the heck is Bobcat and why do I care what he has to say more than anyone else on this blog?

I don’t understand the fascination. Someone could easily go to a board, pose as an “insider,” and make up a ton of information. Then laugh.

Regardless, how do you give credibility to a comment that could have come from anyone who typed “Bobcat” into the “Name” field.

  450. Al

I’m hoping Santana stays put. Moose, Pettite, and Giambi come off the books – they can use that money to give him a 5-6 year deal and it doesn’t cost them prospects.

Santana, Wang, Joba, Hughes, and Kennedy with Brackman, Betances, and Horne lurking.

A solid rotation – really Santana costs a lot – but the other guys would be cheap – that’s for 2009.

  451. #9

    Oofa…

    Jonathan Albaladejo:

What would a Yankee off season be if they didn’t shock us with another big fat contract. Build up that farm system! Mortgate that new stadium by shipping off all the young moneyball budget players that mold a team chemistry. Keep paying that Luxury Tax, cause afterall we have to have that guy.

Your rants are about the same as your SN.

  453. RSM

“Am I the only person hoping Minnesota holds onto Santana until next year?”

Me too. That would be so ideal. Keep Hughes and Melky and sign Santana as a free agent. Plus it gives us another look to see if Santana is still in top form. Remember he didn’t have his best year in 2007.

  454. kasey

    1) the santana deal doesn’t mean hughes is safe. this team is still without an ace and they’re going to make a run at haren.

    2) as long as boston doesn’t get santana, fine. if the yanks and sox both lose out on santana, that’s fine by me. beckett-santana would have been too much.

    3) even with pettitte coming back, the rotation as is isn’t good enough. sorry. we all love homegrown talent. we all love pettitte’s guts. we all love the POTENTIAL of the kids. but guts and potential aren’t enough to win this year. this team needs a certified stopper and wang ain’t it.

so, enjoy watching the kids POSSIBLY blossom. if the yankees really think they’ve got a shot to win with this rotation, they’re delusional. it might net them another playoff spot, but as long as you’ve got to depend on chien-ming wang in game one, you’re toast. last year proved that beyond the shadow of a doubt.

i hope the prospects stay healthy and live up to everyone’s outlandish expectations. if not, there are going to be a lot of people practicing some of that “they should have traded for santana” revisionist history.

  455. ~Adam.

He is a righty, 25yo. Did a lot of time all over in AA and AAA.

    http://www.rotowire.com/baseba.....tm?id=8125

  456. Al

Rip on the Clippard, Wrights, DeSalvos all you want… let’s put it this way – they’re decent chips to get your a middle reliever come deadline time.

  457. CB

“The Tigers were believed to be willing to part with Andrew Miller as part of a package for Haren, ”

That tells you how ridiculously expensive Haren might get. Are the tigers seriously thinking about giving up Andrew Miller for him?

    That is crazy.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/ne.....;type=lgns

  458. hmmm

Clippard might do well in the NL in a big park.

it was getting down to clearing roster spots, so the yankees probably were looking for any trades they could make.

its amazing how far the yankees’ system has come when only a few years ago Clippard was one of their best prospects.

  459. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    isn’t .62 WHIP really good?

    Al-BAL-ah-DEY-ho

I don’t know if I’m stressing it right, but I think that’s how you pronounce it.

  460. myrtlebeachfan

It appears to me that most Yankee fans on this blog would rather wait until 2009 for Johan and keep our gems.

  461. Nolan

This guy’s middle name is Santana. Maybe this is the guy Hank wanted all along!

“so, enjoy watching the kids POSSIBLY blossom. ”

    we will.

why is that a bad thing? how f’ing spoiled are yankee fans?

i still think this trade goes through though.

  464. Boston Dave

Albaladejo could be a solid reliever but I think Clippard is a bit much to give up for him. Clippard could still end up being a pretty good MLB starter. Maybe not to the Yankees standards but he might have had alot more value in a trade if he had another good year in AAA.

I guess the Yanks scouts like him though and that’s good enough for me :)

  465. hmmm

    “Weight 250 lb”

overweight relievers are the new market inefficiency. Cashman is brilliant.

  466. kasey

it’s not a bad thing watching the kids blossom.

just don’t expect a world series this year. that’s all i’m saying. a lot of yankees fans are acting as though this rotation is fantastic. it’s not going to be. it’s going to be three kids learning on the job.

  467. Boston Dave

I believe he is 230 not 250… could be wrong

  468. Rob NY

::shrugs:: maddux glavine and smoltz were 3 kids at one point. No WS rings but they were pretty good…

  469. Boston Dave

    6′5 230 isnt bad

  470. Boston Dave

    Rob NY

Santana Joba Kennedy could have been pretty good too…

I do think Hughes projects to be close to Smoltz.

  471. Master Wangkee

    Jonathan Albaladejo…the next Mariano Rivera…

    I kid.

  472. Rob NY

lol touchee BD… im not against santana 100%

moving over to the new thread about the new guy

  473. Boston Dave

    Rob,

I didnt mean it in a bad way…. just saying

  474. hmmm

“just don’t expect a world series this year. that’s all i’m saying. a lot of yankees fans are acting as though this rotation is fantastic. it’s not going to be. it’s going to be three kids learning on the job.”

not all of us are idiots. i realize there are going to be growing pains.

    it’s not like i don’t want santana.

    but the yankees offered Hughes.

i just don’t see why they should go any further than that when no one else has even come close.

  475. Yanks Prospectus

Awesome trade, clippard did his job and stopped the bleeding one night against the mets but after that wasn’t anything special once people saw what he had. this reliever is REALLY going to be something. the more i read, the more i like….the only reason the nats gave him so cheap was because they are stacked in their pen.

  476. gianthinker

Anyone have a link to this Clippard/Albaladejo deal? I don’t know who Albaladejo is but Clippard wouldn’t cut it for the Yanks, probably not the AL, so I think its a good move for both teams. The pen is easily our biggest need and Clippard will do better in the NL.

  477. SAndMan

Glad to see a boricua in the Yankees system. They are running out.
