VOIII, also, i am in no way saying we sell the farm for great players..but lets be serious here, this is the yankees...player development is certainly important, but takes a backseat to winning now(especially when you have vets that arent getting any younger...sure hughes could be great in a while, but then we'll have to figure out SS, C, CL, among many other things)

hey, they're keeping joba, kennedy, horne, Ajax....you CANT KEEP EVERYBODY....you develop a good farm system not only to have cheap productive players of your own, but to also have chips to deal in trades(and when you have a LOT of chips, you dont feel so bad when you have to deal a few of them away for something great)

Rey, even Bill Smith, who's job could depend upon this deal, is not going to try and spite anybody by taking the lesser of two deals. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a halt in negotiations for the time being and see it start up after Christmas. They have until spring training to do something.

VOIII, check this link out:

http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/chamberlain-or-hughes-whos-got-better-mechanics/

there are links in there to previous evaluations as well, but the basic premise is that his "new" mechanics(from eiland and contreras) have possibly changed him for the worse...he'll still be a good pitcher, but the mechanics he had in 06 were better

of course, i'm no expert, but these guys are, and the stuff they say seems to make sense....

Kunaldo,
Also on the 1/2 of the prospects panning out thing...You actual help me make my point. The more prospects you have, i.e. don't trade away the better the odds are that you will actually reap the rewards of a well stocked farm system. The Yankees are doing better than avg with their recent promotions, are they not? Robi Cano was not supposed to be anywhere near this good by anyone's projection and was refused by the Rangers in the Arod deal.

Somehow, with 3 1st baseman and two others that can play there, I'm not sure 1st base is them main priority. Nady is no defensive upgrade at 1st, is too expensive. The only way it would make sense is in salary dump in a deal centered around Marte. NYY takes on the contract for very little and moves him to another team in a package.

Kunaldo,
Eiland and Contreras changed Hughes Arm slot easing the the strain on his shoulder...It's one of the reasons his velocity was down. As he got used to the new slot and got healthy his velocity started to climb. I would love to acquire Santana. However I am not willing to surrender the future of the franchise. As good as Santana is he is no lock to win a Cy Young award, and is no lock to stay healthy.

argh, come on, the sky isn't falling. Are you sure you are a Yankees fan? Or are you just really young?

Stop and think for a few minutes. First, the Yankees had a terrible start to the year, no Hughes for the most part of it, no Chamberlain, no Kennedy. The Yankees started the season with such gems as Pavano and Igawa for Pete's sake. Yet they came within two games of the division after being thought dead in May.

Would Johan be a good addition to the rotation? Absolutely. However there is a big cost in prospects AND the way Santana wants it is to tear up his old contract and have a fresh contract so its like giving up the players AND signing a FA all in one sweep.

If the Twins take the deal, fine. If they don't I don't see the problem with that either.

Beckett didn't dominate the Yankees, even though he was good. That was their "ace". Dicey K is not going to improve from where he was. The more he has been seen the more he was hit. (The RS see this too, don't kid yourself) Schilling? He didn't do that great against the Yankees and he will probably have more health issues this coming season. Wakefield? Buchholz? I don't think the Yankee line up will do terrible against them.

If the Sox take the plunge and get Santana, guess what, his ERA will go up a decent amount because of pitching half his games in Fenway which is historically tough on Lefties. (Again, the RS know this as well)

The Twins will either make the deal or they will take a lesser offer or hold on to Santana.

With the talk about his no waiving his NTC during the season or his preference of playing on the East Coast having been out there I bet the Twins had a talking to him and so he came out - through his agent - and said that wasn't true. I don't buy it.

If the Twins don't get something good for Santana the fans will be even more ticked off than they are now. Many of those fans are hoping for Hughes and Melky, even though they like Ellsbury, a lot of them as realizing that Hughes is the star deal.

Just relax a bit.

Sorry to hear about Andy. The jft I'm the dad of will not be happy. But he's just the first to go. I'm sure TJ Beam, Matt DeSalvo & Bronson Sardinha aren't making firm plans to spend spring training in Tampa. And I would expect Bruney to be non-tendered. Why go to arbitration with him when we've got several more just as good if not better?

VOIII, you have to understand that you can't think that even more than half of your prospects will pan out...it just doesnt happen, whatever their skillset may be...(dont get me wrong, i will be super upset about hughes leaving, b/c i've followed him since day one, and have been waiting his rise to greatness...but who knows what will happen...guys who look at his mechanics say he will have shoulder problems...but what i do know is that a 2 time cy young winner(should have been 3 for sure) will be anchoring our staff, and he's 29, so he's not RJ, clemens, brown, or whoever...he's a bonafide number 1 still...and he's been starting full time for 4 years! so his innings log isnt as much as people make it out to be...
