You keep talking, Little Stein

Peter Abraham
December
3

A lot of comments on the blog are about Hank Steinbrenner and whether has has tampered with Johan Santana.

Sure he has. You’re not supposed to talk about players under contract with another team.

But another team has to accuse somebody of tampering, which Minnesota is not going to do. Talking about tampering is a waste of time. Executives do it all the time, on and off the record and nobody gets punished for it.

If anything, Hammering Hank might get a call from somebody with MLB telling him to tone it down a bit.

UPDATE, 6:14 p.m.: I left a few messages with Hank that haven’t been returned. One of my esteemed competitors said he spoke to Steinbrenner and he said he wasn’t commenting today.

Hank basically told Santana pressure the Twins and a Golden Mine is waiting for you combine that with the fact the Boston does not like to give huge contracts one can see how this can make Santana pressure the Twins to complete the deal with NYY.

  2. Motown Yankees Fan

Pete – thank you for clearing that up. I hope all the Twinkie fans will calm down.

  3. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

mel: I’ve got the scores back to all parts. Above average verbal, WAY below average math, perfect writing.

  4. Mike NYY- Save the Big Two

Haren is not in the same ballpark as Santana. The two are not comparable. It’s not even close.

You could say the same about Hughes and Kenneyd

  5. raymagnetic

MikeNYY, no you can’t because we haven’t seen Hughes and Kennedy pitch enough games in the majors to make a comparison.

As prospects in the minor leagues they put up very similar numbers albeit Kennedy is older.

  6. LouG

I guess I dont really understand this tampering thing.

Hank says he really wants Santana – that is tampering???

He just made an offer to trade for the guy – its kinda obvious that he wants him. How is saying so equal to tampering, when making the offer isn’t?

  7. On D Ball

Let’s all say a prayer that the Yankees don’t get this Santana guy.

With a long term contract, he will be rich and lazy.

I would rather watch those young guys with the lean and hungry look.

  8. Mike NYY- Save the Big Two

Hughes has been ranked higher in every prospect list. Hughes is a top 5 guy while Kennedy is probably a top 25 guy. Hughes has much better stuff than Kennedy. Kennedy has a ceiling of a middle of the rotation guy while Hughes could be an ace.

Another factor between Haren-Santana is the tremendous monetary difference. i don’t care wehat you say. THe Yankees DO have a limit and 150 million dollars they don’t spend on Santana this year is 150 million dollar to spend on another ace like C. C. Sabathia next off-season.

  9. Dan

    Mike,

I don’t think that Sabathia will make it to free agency.

  10. Chris NY

Hey Pete, do me a favor… I picked up some shirts at Stan’s behind the Stadium over the weekend for some friends in Texas. While I was there, grabbed a Phil Hughes t-shirt, figuring they might soon stop producing them……. So my favor is, tell hammerin’ hank, big stein, and cash money (whom I suspect does not agree with trading Phil Franchise), that I would prefer if my $20 t-shirt is still worth $20 come April.

Maybe if Minnesota really is upset by his comments, they’ll let the deadline go by. Then next week come crawling back and tell us they’ll take the IPK/Melky/xxx trade.

  11. Mike NYY- Save the Big Two

I don’t think that Sabathia will make it to free agency.

Okay, you might be right their but Bedard will hit free agency (is that next year or the year after)? Mark Texiera could also hit free agency.

  12. Mike NYY- Save the Big Two

C.C. Sabbathia= Fat, lazy, but good at baseball

  13. murphydog

Oh come on.. how was Pohlad put at a disadvantage by what Hank said?

The Twinks are shopping Santana like crazy and it’s hardly a secret the Yanks and the Sox are hot for the guy; the Twins are playing them off against each other. If it was before the Twins had invited the teams to make offers and enter negotiations for Santana, I’d be inclined to agree that it could be a problem. But in the middle of heated negotiations for Hank to merely restate the obvious gives him no advantage and causes the Twins no disadvantage. If anything it gives the Twins an advantage because it shows Hank is losing his cool.

  14. Mike NYY- Save the Big Two

the Cs in CC stand for choker so his full name is really chokerchoker sabathia. i saw him choker against ny and boston (2x)

How clever of you. You`re judging his talent at baseball based on 3 games in a career of hundreds. That makes so much sense

  15. GreenBeret7

I just posted this on the Pettitte thread, but, hadn’t seen that there were two more topics since. Sorry about the duplication, but, should end the tampering allegations.

Here’s a direct quote from Bud Selig on tampering charges filed in 2004 against…SURPRISE: George Steinbrenner on Randy Johnson, who the Yankees were not involved in direct contact with ‘Zona to acquire Johnson. Read the last paragraph quoting Selig.

From the NY Sun and Wallace Matthews:

Right now, the deal Steinbrenner wants to make is to bring Randy Johnson to the Yankees to shore up his tottering pitching staff, the one that even $183 million couldn’t fix. And if he has any hope of doing that, he’s going to need Bud Selig’s blessing.

Over the past week, Steinbrenner – who abhors, rightly, the very concept of the luxury tax Selig jammed down his throat in 2002, and even retained attorney David Boies to explore the possibility of suing MLB – has been overtly jockeying to worm his way into Bud’s good graces.

In fact, the kissy-fest has worked both ways. Two weeks ago, Steinbrenner gushed publicly about how much he would “love” to have Randy Johnson, a clear violation of baseball’s tampering rules if ever there was one. But there was Selig jumping to the Boss’s defense: “You know tampering when you see it… Believe me when I tell you, that is not tampering.”

  16. CB

“cc sabathia = rich and lazy choker”

Sabathia threw 241 innings last year. Most in baseball.

    Real “lazy”

  17. ZO

if Minnesota doesnt trade him now, Santana will Def make it to free agency. I think santana is curious just how much the yankees are willing to pay him

  18. fleas

Well, aside form the awesome news about Pet this morning.. what a boring day so far..

Can we speed things up a bit for my entertainment if nothing else? Okay, thanks.

Lastly, Cashman was not traveling with ‘everybody else’. I know he is up north in Connecticut, and The Stein’s an Co are in Tampa.. but I can’t help sensing the distance between them widening.

    hmm..

  19. kasey

Hank is going to talk his way right out of the deal. great work.

  20. murphydog

    Dr.Evil29:

“Hank basically told Santana pressure the Twins and a Golden Mine is waiting for you combine that with the fact the Boston does not like to give huge contracts one can see how this can make Santana pressure the Twins to complete the deal with NYY.”

You don’t think Santana’s agent already knew full well that he had some leverage here to make a deal happen? You think he had to be signaled by Hank to know what to do? And how does this only favor the Yankees? Sorry, but I’m not convinced.

  21. myrtlebeachfan

I don’t want Santana. Isn’t this what Yankee fans wanted to get away from? Didn’t we want a departure from trading away prospects and paying millions and millions for players that ultimately prove to be a bust later on. I know Santana is a whole different animal, but man.. to keep Hughes, Kennedy, and Joba would be fantastic. To have that money (150 mil) to give toward the bullpen or to a first baseman would be wonderful (a CATCHER!). I’m content to go on ahead with what we have, even if it means losing this season. I want to have that sentimental attachment to Kennedy, Hughes, and Joba for years to come. I want to feel the same way about them that I do when Pettitte takes the mound or when Jeter comes through in the clutch. I don’t get that same feeling when Abreu or Damon come through. It doesnt feel the same to me when Mussina throws a good game compared to when Wang throws one.

I want to see Jackson and Tabata grow and be in the outfield with Melky. I would rather have that kind of connection to the players I root for. I do not want to root for David Wells or David Justice anymore. I’m sick of the random rentals and aging stars. Let’s do this the right way and show the major leagues what our young kids can do. A world series will mean so much more with Hughes on the mound than it will with Santana.

That said, if we get Santana, I’ll be rooting for him. I just wish we would hold to what we originally had planned last season… keeping our young studs.

  22. Global Warming

Sabathia and Bedard won’t make Free Agency.

  23. minnysota

sounds like the twins dont want melky..

  24. Mike NYY- Save the Big Two

why did he do bad in those 3 games compared to the other hundreds? oh ya cause the other hundreds were all regular season games. hes now been exposed as a choker.

Ummm, maybe it was just a “coincedence” in a “small sample”

Maybe he was tired after 240 regular season innings.

I`m not sure if your joking or not and I`ve had this debate to many times. Nobody has any evidence of consistently clutch performers

  25. Michelle

    Chris NY :

I got a shirt at Stan’s that reads “Masters of the Rings” with a huge ring on it. The Yankees will still be masters of the rings long after anybody on this board has left this earth.

  26. bphill

If Bedard gets traded, well it’ll be a tough task, however…like MLBTR said, Beddard doesn’t want to return and will not sign an extension.

  27. Iron

Listen guys….Pettite is back, Wang is way above average, Jabba, Hughes and the Moose will make up the rest of the rotation. The bullpen will still be in a bit of disarray but actually will be fine. Ya gotta have something to complain about next year. We’ll get Santana next year when he goes FREE agent and we’ll still have the Melkster and Hughes with a year experience. Santane wants to be here and he knows we want him….. he’ll wait.

  28. fleas

    Kasey,

it seems he already has since the Twins have said they don’t care about his deadline.. but this seriously runs the risk if them losing out on ‘the best deal’ which I personally hope happens. It would be a great start for the new Twins manager to say.. I have the best pitcher in baseball but for someone reason I couldn’t make a trade..

    Let’s move it already…

  29. Nick in SF

Hank can’t respond or he’ll be accused of tampering with Minnesota’s tampering charges.

  30. fleas

If you guys want inside information.. you can always email T.C. the twins mascot. Rumor has it, he knows the deal.

  31. Chowdah bowl

Simple logic says Gammons can’t possibly have 1st hand knowledge of prospects except for what he gathers from wire services, stat bureaus, team websites, and similar sources.
He’s based between Cape Cahd, Bahhhstin, and ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn. except for some Sunday Night Baseball stints.
He doesn’t visit Cactus League sites out west and just stays in Florida with his Red Sox for most of the spring.
The other hoots on ESPN think he’s a guru.

  32. A-Point

Personally, I don’t see where this Santana deal – especially since Pettitte decided to return – is all that critical.

I am not saying that Santana wouldn’t be a great addition, but at what cost?

I think Hughes is too good a deal for the Twinkies when coupled with Melky. The downside of the deal is Melky? Come on, its not like they are going to get star players for every position. Melky is a solid player with energy, has a great arm and quite frankly, I don’t think he has reached his ceiling.

One thing that really frosts me is that the various sources talk about how great Ellsbury is (who, BTW is only one year younger than Melky) and how he is still developing. Meanwhile, Melky is starting his third year in the majors, has hit twice as many home runs as vonderkin and was up in the majors at a younger age.

Melky needs work on the route he takes to the ball, but that comes with experience. He has decent speed, but isn’t a fast start to his running.

So, all in all, the deal was darn good. Better than what the Saux are offering. If its not good enough, then walk away.

And the tampering thing? Too many people think they know what they are talking about, but to say you want a player during negotiations isn’t tampering. What Ozzie Guillien said about A-Rod during the series was far closer to tampering than what Steinbrenner said given that was before A-Rod opted out and there were no negotiations going on.

When a player is on the market, how is it tampering by saying you want the player you are negotiating for? Its a captain obvious statement.

  33. Bob's My Uncle

kasey, the season isn’t lost before the first pitch is thrown, nor was the Yankees playoffs lost with the start of the season. Really Dude, you get a little too emotional with any set back the Yankees have or seem to have, and it becomes the sky is falling.

Losing Santana isn’t the end of the world. If the Yankees were in that desperate shape they would need more than one single pitcher to make the difference.

  34. Drive 4-5

Santanamania was fun while it lasted. I think it’s over. The Twins don’t want to look like they are on Hank’s clock and the Yanks don’t want to give up fair value for the best lefty in baseball.

  35. Heath

The Commissioner will probably address the meeting at the conclusion and may lightly make mention of tampering rules as more of a reminder than anything else. He’s afraid of his own shadow.
