The Commissioner will probably address the meeting at the conclusion and may lightly make mention of tampering rules as more of a reminder than anything else. He's afraid of his own shadow.

Santanamania was fun while it lasted. I think it's over. The Twins don't want to look like they are on Hank's clock and the Yanks don't want to give up fair value for the best lefty in baseball.

kasey, the season isn't lost before the first pitch is thrown, nor was the Yankees playoffs lost with the start of the season. Really Dude, you get a little too emotional with any set back the Yankees have or seem to have, and it becomes the sky is falling.

Losing Santana isn't the end of the world. If the Yankees were in that desperate shape they would need more than one single pitcher to make the difference.

Personally, I don't see where this Santana deal - especially since Pettitte decided to return - is all that critical.

I am not saying that Santana wouldn't be a great addition, but at what cost?

I think Hughes is too good a deal for the Twinkies when coupled with Melky. The downside of the deal is Melky? Come on, its not like they are going to get star players for every position. Melky is a solid player with energy, has a great arm and quite frankly, I don't think he has reached his ceiling.

One thing that really frosts me is that the various sources talk about how great Ellsbury is (who, BTW is only one year younger than Melky) and how he is still developing. Meanwhile, Melky is starting his third year in the majors, has hit twice as many home runs as vonderkin and was up in the majors at a younger age.

Melky needs work on the route he takes to the ball, but that comes with experience. He has decent speed, but isn't a fast start to his running.

So, all in all, the deal was darn good. Better than what the Saux are offering. If its not good enough, then walk away.

And the tampering thing? Too many people think they know what they are talking about, but to say you want a player during negotiations isn't tampering. What Ozzie Guillien said about A-Rod during the series was far closer to tampering than what Steinbrenner said given that was before A-Rod opted out and there were no negotiations going on.

When a player is on the market, how is it tampering by saying you want the player you are negotiating for? Its a captain obvious statement.

Simple logic says Gammons can't possibly have 1st hand knowledge of prospects except for what he gathers from wire services, stat bureaus, team websites, and similar sources.
He's based between Cape Cahd, Bahhhstin, and ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn. except for some Sunday Night Baseball stints.
He doesn't visit Cactus League sites out west and just stays in Florida with his Red Sox for most of the spring.
The other hoots on ESPN think he's a guru.

Hank can't respond or he'll be accused of tampering with Minnesota's tampering charges.

Kasey,

it seems he already has since the Twins have said they don't care about his deadline.. but this seriously runs the risk if them losing out on 'the best deal' which I personally hope happens. It would be a great start for the new Twins manager to say.. I have the best pitcher in baseball but for someone reason I couldn't make a trade..

Let's move it already...

Listen guys....Pettite is back, Wang is way above average, Jabba, Hughes and the Moose will make up the rest of the rotation. The bullpen will still be in a bit of disarray but actually will be fine. Ya gotta have something to complain about next year. We'll get Santana next year when he goes FREE agent and we'll still have the Melkster and Hughes with a year experience. Santane wants to be here and he knows we want him..... he'll wait.

If Bedard gets traded, well it'll be a tough task, however...like MLBTR said, Beddard doesn't want to return and will not sign an extension.
