Yankees staying quiet today

Peter Abraham
December
5

The Yankees officially announced their trade with the Nationals that happened on Monday. We’ll be getting Brian Cashman in a little while.

Don’t expect much. From what I understand, they have nothing major cooking.

————–

Ran into Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus the other day and just a little while ago, Sean Forman of Baseball-Reference.com stopped by to say hello.

If you’re not using BR to check stats, you’re missing out. It’s easy to use, loads in a flash and has everything you can think of in terms of team and individual stats. Every baseball writer owes Sean a debt of gratitude for the work he has done. During the season, I’m probably on that site 20 times a day.

Speaking of web sites, we added a few new ones to the blogroll over on the right. So if I’m not killing enough time for you at work, check out those blogs.

    Peter,
A week or two ago, I thought I read somewhere that Scott Kazmir may be made available for trading purposes. Have you heard anything to that effect during the meetings?

  2. Fleas

keep it up Yankee’s… off to a great start this year!

Just don’t make any more Kei Igawa mistakes so you can’t afford the a ‘real’ pitcher like Johan Santana.

  3. Ice Age

They have nothing cooking and that’s o.k. because I ain’t hungry for bad trades.

  4. Fleas

    JimmyH,

The Rays will not.. I repeat will not trade Kaz to the Yankee’s.

  5. Phil

    Cash is in stealth mode.

  6. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Pete, you do know that it’s the end of the semester?

Are you really sure you’re supposed to encourage that kind of procrastination?

    (Congratulations to the bloggers!)

  7. Fleas

Let’s not overspend, by all means, “Don’t overspend!” After all, it’s not like we are closing out the historic Yankee Stadium this year and moving next year.

    Heh. Yankee’s can’t afford Santana? I don’t buy it.

  8. Fleas

I’ll finish by saying that if the RedSox don’t land Santana, I will be much happier and relieved. If they do land him.. which I know it looks slim, I will be pulling my hair out for years.

  9. Ice Age

Forget Scott Kazmir man, how far away is Betances from the bigs?

  10. back bench

I’m really impressed with Hank. The thoroughbred horse business is tough, and you have to have serious BS filters to survive and thrive. Having been in it, you learn to detect fakes and bluffs very quickly.

You also learn to gauge quality and value a strong “farm” system. This will serve the Yankees well in the future.

  11. Fred Flintstone

The Sommer Frieze is just a cheap rip off of Pete’s site. Don’t waste your time.

  12. A-Point

The real deals are the ones you don’t hear about then are hit between the eyes with.

Watch for something like that to happen with Santanamanadingdong.

  13. mko

According to the following article, the Yankees appear to be the frontrunner to acquire the services of left-handed relief pitcher Ron Mahay:
    http://mlb.mlb.com/news/articl.....ed=rss_atl

  14. stuart

pass on Mahay another waste of money are inconsistent bullpen guys.. same as karsay, farnsworth, and about 10 other wasted contrats..

go with or try whelan, cox, sanchez, veras, ramirez, britton, the new guy, and about 8 other good arms the yanks have in the minors..

does anyone ever learn you spend for big time relief guys(closers) and that is it….

  15. unhappy

PETER… CAN YOU PLEASE ASK CASHMAN ABOUT THE DAMASO MARTE RUMOR? IT WOULD BE INCREDIBLE IF WE COULD GET HIM. GIVING MAHAY 3 YEARS, 15 MILLION IS CRAZY!

  16. saucy

for a ripoff, it’s pretty cool that it’s been there since 2005. i could be wrong, but i don’t think Pete’s was around back then…

  17. Art

    How do I spell relief ? F-L-A-T-U-E-N-C-E

  18. phillips

I don’t want Mahay, I would like Marte, Mahay could turn into a Farnsworthless player.

  19. Dave

stuart is right mahay is crap and if cash cant sign a quality relief or closer, he shouldnt sign any one. He does this every yr – passes on all of the best relief which ALWAYS goes extremely quickly and then, sign some crap player and we spend the whole season patching holes in the pen. At this point, we lost out on any one decent. Now, we have to rely in house. Dont pass on the goods and then, waste money on some over-payed non-impact player.

Phil, is stealth mode code for doing absolutely nothing? If thas the case, that is exactly where cash is. Keep up the good work buddy.

  20. rodg12

Doreen – Your question from the last blog. There’s only one Lady Trojan who’s started 4 games and is averaging 21 minutes a night. ;)

  21. Dave

Its funny how the organization didnt wanna save money by not giving 50 mil to Igawa or Millions more than they should have to Mo and Po but they wanna save money by not spending it on a true ace, innings eater and the best pitcher in the world. Great move- this cant be true. Even cash and stein arent that dumb.

  22. bartap

I just looked up Mahay on baseballreference.com and there’s nothing there that makes me want to see him on the Yankees roster, especially since he’s 36 and last season was his only decent season out of the last three. There must be someone in our vaunted young pitching ranks who can fill the LOOGY spot better than this.

  23. phillips

    what a babe… Mrs. IPK
    http://usctrojans.cstv.com/spo.....son00.html

  24. mko

I’d have to agree that the Yankees management (or Brian Cashman alone?) doesn’t value relief pitching as much as they should. The Yankees never sign any great middle reliever free agents that are available and then settle for medium talent or injury prone guys.

Also, I’m sure, closers “available” via trade (Valverde, Nathan, Street) might consider setting up for Rivera and eventually taking over the closing role after that. Do the Yankees really want to wait until Mariano can’t cut it anymore?

  25. bartap

Mrs. IPK is in her fifth year of college? Don’t most folks finish in 4?

  26. east side yankee

I haven’t posted in two days and someone may have already mentioned this but I thought I would comment anyway

It looks like Cashman called Boston’s bluff. He guessed correctly that Boston was clearly in on this Santana deal just to make the Yankees give up their prospects and then sign him to a deal of 100 million plus. Boston used Olney, Gammons etc to get the Yanks to drop their cookies and overpay. When Pettite came back Cashman talked Hank and Hal into calling Boston’s bluff.

Cashman knew that Boston would never pony up the prospects and then pay Santana …it looks likee he was right.

The Yanks want Santana but they ain’t giving up shit to get him. And to Boston’s credit neither are they.

The winter suckers seem to be the Detroit Tigers who gave up their entire system for Miguel Cabrera (We all know Willis will likely have a very difficult adjustment to the American league)

Detroit may mash (Sheffield is older and will get hurt again in 08; Magglio is coming off a career year I thinks its a safe guess his numbers go down)but they could also regret giving up Miller and Maybin (and the other three pitches)

The Yanks and it looks like Boston have made a stand…if you want us to pay Johann’s eourmous salary you ain’t getting Hughes and you ain’t getting Ellsbury.

Yankee fans will just have to live without their annual bright and shiny new toy it seems. Unless the Twins accept Horne, Ipk and some other b-level prospects.

  27. the todd

mko, who are thinking of exactly ? i think signing FA RP to expensive contracts is a terrible idea. look at teams with good bp’s i.e. padres, they are home grown or trade for pitchers that have good control.

  28. A-Point

mko, how do you know they don’t have a couple of possibles they are grooming for that role in the minors? Or wasn’t Rivera homegrown?

While I have no problem if they buy a closer from a team if one comes up, sometimes your own farm can provide good arms.

  29. A-Point

bartap, there are a lot of 5 year bachelor degrees, a lot more now than ever before. At the University I work at there are a number of schools with 5 year degrees.

Also, if she switched majors it could add on years as well.

  30. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

bartap: The architecture program at Syracuse is five years.

  31. sharp shooter

Mrs (Ipk) has a man face with blonde peroxide as usual!
Lower jaw is manish looking for my taste, but then again don’t most female athletes. They get the job done but resemble men in skirts to me.

  32. bartap

Pshaw, back in my day, we got our degrees in 4 years and we felt guilty for taking that long. Why, I finished two majors and a minor and I had to walk 15 miles in ankle deep snow just to get to class. We didn’t have any of those fancy internets either…

  33. stuart

guys the FA pitchers this year were crap.. cordero got like $44 + mill and the quality goes down fast from there.

Dave is still moaning about no Johan, get a friggin life…..

is it really that hard to understand.. $150 mill or so for 6 yrs for a 29 yr old pitcher plus giving up 4 good prospects that are cheap, Johan is a $200+ mill investment……

enough of long term contracts for pitchers….

  34. A-Point

The one thing with the Yankee farm is it is very heavy with RHP. The Yankees will need to get some LHP in some of these drafts.

That is probably the interest in Mahay. His stats are kind of all over the place, but when pitching in relief it really doesn’t show the whole picture. A few bad outings can screw up the ERA big time.

  35. NYPD113th

    “what a babe… Mrs. IPK”

    Ummm, what?

You must be talking about the movie ‘Babe’, or you don’t get out much.

  36. PittsburghYankeeFan

Igawa for Marte. Straight up. Or give them Rasner.

  37. Dave

hey stuart I was agreeing with u – but i guess u like to argue with ppl no matter what they say.

And Johan Santana was like so ten minutes ago right? Im sorry im so caught up in the yanks acquiring an ace – every yankee fan has been complaining about it for quite a while now, we have the chance to do it and the yanks are passing becuz of money some are saying! I have a right to complain.
Johan is worth 200 mil – if arod is worth 300 mil, johan is certainly worth 200 mil. Get a life? what are you five yrs old?

  38. the todd

bartap. she might have been red shirted too? since she plays basketball. that might be a reason why she is in school for 5 years.

by the way I went to arizona state. between the bars and girls, I wish I graduated in five years, and not four.

  39. dontfirecash (though if he trades Phil, I might reconsider)

    Bartap,
The four year graduation rate from most schools is unbelievably low.

  40. Dave

the yanks give ten horrible contracts for pitchers over 40 that havent been good in yrs or have had one good yr in their whole career and all of a sudden johan )the best pitcher of the generation) isnt worth the money? You are a dumb@$

  41. PittsburghYankeeFan

The Santana story is far from over, but I still think they either try to trade him at the deadline or take the picks.

Playing Detroit and Cleveland 18 times per season (with him starting probably 8-10 of those 36 games is going to do nothing for his value.

  42. A-Point

Rebecca, the reason for the SU architecture program being that long, as with most others that are 5 years, is because they have built in internships they have to include in the program.

Believe it or not, it is growing in a lot of college programs. The idea is practical experience along with the classroom learning.

A lot of Engineering schools have gone that way with their programs as well.

And Bartap, I know what you mean about having to walk 15 miles in ankle deep snow to class. You forgot it was uphill both ways. ;)

  43. bartap

Did I mention the wolves along the way?

  44. pat

    Bartrap

Says Mrs. IPK is in the Masters Program for Education and already completed her undergraduate degree in English Literature and Languages.

  45. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Umm.

    Bartap.

I walked in shin-deep snow to class today and yesterday, and no, I am totally not making that up.

  46. A-Point

Dave, it more than the cost in money terms, its the cost in prospects and young pitchers and players that cause it to be expensive.

We get it, you want Johan no matter what. Personally, I’d rather see how things shake out with the young arms. I also think that the Santana deal for Hughes was way too much. It may very well be too much to risk losing out on Kennedy.

Its a risk, but sometimes with bigger risks are bigger rewards.

  47. Dave

i heard that story about dicek, stuart and ppl were saying yanks shouldnt blow that much on a pitcher from japan. Esp when we can get johan next yr. And look at how many young pitchers we are stockpiling to trade for johan. And i didnt buy it- but i can see where the were coming from. But then someone like u stuart comes in with ur ohhh the yanks have thrown money at pitchers left and right and where have they gotten? or they all sucked when they got the contract. You are talking about randy johnson at 41 and 42 or clemens at 45 or Pavano with his one good season in the NL or wright with the same or igawas numbers in japan. THIS IS JOHAN SANTANA – THE GUY WE HAVE BEEN DROOLING OVER FOR YRS. If u cant see how he is different than the other pitchers we have signed GET OUT OF THIS BLOG. You know nothing about baseball and dont deserve to be a yankee fan

  48. VaYank

Supposedly Yanks were interested in Dotel again?? Marte would be a nice fit…

  49. A-Point

Come on Rebecca, it isn’t that bad here in Syracuse … yet. Unless you are talking about the piles of snow and drifts. Only about 8 inches fell last night. Of course there is more on the way tonight, though, so you might get your wish. ;)

  50. No. 4 train

What would a lefthanded reliever like Sparky Lyle be worth in today’s market ? The point being, Marte and Mahay should be in the Yankee bullpen in 2008. Both can get lefthanded hitters out unlike Myers and Henn in 2007. Never underestimate the value of good lefthanded relievers.

  51. Dave

i wouldnt give the twins anything for santana – i dont even wanna trade hughes – i love hughes. But the fact that we arent even negotiating with him presently and that writers are saying its partly for monetary concerns is what really pisses me off. Dont offer kennedy or hughes – offer cano, offer a platter of prospects and kennedy. We have the bait to snag Johan, we have the money. If we go to the redsox – we wont even be able to compete with their rotation. Look at the innings pitched our young ones have thrown – even if they are ridiculous none of them can even pitch enuff innings to be an ace next yr. And one will prolly end up getting injured in the process. hughes should prolly still be in AAA developing. We need santana! I wouldnt give the twins anything tho certainly not – but i would give 200 million to sign him for sure.

  52. bartap

Well, Rebecca, you were hoping for a White Christmas, so it’s not all bad news.

  53. bartap

So Dave, to summarize, you don’t want to give up anything for Santana. You don’t want to trade Hughes. You thing we should give up a lot of players for Santana, including Cano, Kennedy, and a “platter” of others. You (once again reiterate) you wouldn’t give up anything for Santana. You’d give him $200 million dollars if he was magically released from the Twins’ control.

Do your multiple personalities know about each other?

  54. bartap

Oh great, our resident spammer is back.

  55. Frosty

So Boston was bluffing all along – bidding up the price with no intention of landing Santana.

Now the Twins come away empty handed.

  56. nate c.

matt – stay away. you can’t do this weird advertising on a blog.

  57. Drive 4-5

The other day someone posted a list of the organizational rankings for minor league talent. The Yankees ranked 5th and the Red Sox ranked 9th.

Does anyone remember who ranked first? Better yet, does anyone have a copy of the list or a link to get it?

    Thanks!

  58. Boston Dave

    Matt,

stop plugging your link over and over…

  59. A-Point

That’s a little over the top there Dave.

I doubt Dicey K is going to any better this next season, and will probably decline as the league gets more looks at him.

Santana is great, but not worth the farm system for. IMO not worth losing Hughes, Joba or IPK over. Yes, Santana would be nice to have on the rotation, but how many extra wins would he bring? 5 or 6 is what is projected. Looking at his record from last year, that even might be a stretch. So is it worth paying 5 million or so for each of those extra wins? Hard to say. It also means losing out on some of the best prospects the Yankees have had in terms of pitching in a long, long time.

What would you say 3 years from now while watching Santana on the decline (may or may not happen, but this is my supposition) while Hughes is getting 20 or so wins every year? Then its back to Oh, gotta trade the farm to GET BACK the player they gave up for Santana.

Any player is a gamble. The Yankees might not be out of it with going after Santana, but if they are, they looked at the cost over all, money for Santana PLUS loss of good developing pitchers they could have for at least a decade, and decided to roll the dice.

    Rebecca -

I was in Ticonderoga (near Lake George) over the weekend – it was severely cold (12 F on Sunday)

I split on Sunday, just before the snows hit. The good news? Lots of ski areas opening early – including cross country ski areas around New England.

    Snow for skiing? Is nice…
Dealing with snow in one’s daily life? Not so much…

  77. Ranting Guy

    Rebecca, A-Point, Bartap

It’s not unusual for student athletes to redshirt a year and stretch their degrees out a year. That Mike Mussina finished Stamford in 3 years (from what I’ve heard) makes him an exception.

Architeture program at Syracuse (which I was in) is a typical 5 year professional degree program. When I was there in the 80’s it was a 165-credit degree. Internships aren’t built in to it but there’s a thesis year at the end of it. It is 5 straight years of hard work and dedication with virtually no time for activities. It’s centered primarily around the design studio (which takes at least as much time as a full time job) and then there’s the academics. Internships’ are just summer jobs. If you have any part time job like 10-15hrs/week, you’re either not finishing in 5 years, teetering on a 2.0GPA, or sleeping 6 hours a night the whole year. There is an option for a semester in Florence Italy in the 4th year of the program, but that’s not a vacation either.

Ask any other student how much the students in that program can hang out … very little time for socializing & partying. Few students can go through the program w/o at least handful of all-nighters each academic year.

But in many ways its worth it.
