It's not unusual for student athletes to redshirt a year and stretch their degrees out a year. That Mike Mussina finished Stamford in 3 years (from what I've heard) makes him an exception.

Architeture program at Syracuse (which I was in) is a typical 5 year professional degree program. When I was there in the 80's it was a 165-credit degree. Internships aren't built in to it but there's a thesis year at the end of it. It is 5 straight years of hard work and dedication with virtually no time for activities. It's centered primarily around the design studio (which takes at least as much time as a full time job) and then there's the academics. Internships' are just summer jobs. If you have any part time job like 10-15hrs/week, you're either not finishing in 5 years, teetering on a 2.0GPA, or sleeping 6 hours a night the whole year. There is an option for a semester in Florence Italy in the 4th year of the program, but that's not a vacation either.

Ask any other student how much the students in that program can hang out ... very little time for socializing & partying. Few students can go through the program w/o at least handful of all-nighters each academic year.

But in many ways its worth it.
