Yankees lose one, gain one in Rule 5 draft

Peter Abraham
December

The Yankees throught for sure they would Steven Jackson or Brett Smith in the Rule 5 Draft. It came as a surprise that RHP Mike Gardner was taken by San Diego.

Gardner was a long reliever for Class AA Trenton last season. If he doesn’t stick with the Padres, they would have to give him back to the Yanks.

The Yankees selected RHP Bo Hall in the minor-league phase of the draft. He was 5-2 with a 3.46 as a Class AA reliever last season.

Pete, have you heard anything involving the Bucs and Marte/Snell/Bay or Matusi to the Giants?

  2. murphydog

So, that’s why they didn’t make the Santana trade. They had their eye on THIS guy.

  3. YankeeDudel

    Bo knows pitching.

  4. Mike

    Bo knows AA.

  5. raymagnetic

    Pete, that link doesn’t work.

  6. New England

    “Bo knows AA”

    HAHAHAHAHAH…

  7. Kyle

After just pimping Baseball Reference you use a link to MILB.com? And one that doesn’t even work (for Bo Hall at least) :)

Here’s the link to Bo Hall on BR

K/9 is nice, but WHIP is pretty high.

  8. Sara

Pete, any word on Ron Mahay? That would be a nice signing for the Yanks. He has a good era and would be a lefty out of the pen! keep us posted!

Eric Duncan was crying about feeling unprotected and vulnerable. I wonder if he’s now crying that no team even wants him for free.

Disclaimer I did not hear this myself but a fellow Yankee friend of mine told me it… Not that it is a big deal either way.

Yankees have released Carl Pavano, and re-signed him to a minor league contract according to 1050 ESPN Radio

  13. ZomgLOLz

    lol

  14. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

fyi My fell NYC’ers going to see Joba at Modells. Is is just a press conference. I just called to see how long the line is, and that is what they told me.

*FELLOW* Damit we need an edit button.

  16. sunny615

    Looked over Bo Hall’s stats…

eh. Not sure why the Yankees bothered…?

  17. mel

    Chris,

That report can’t be right. Signing another contract implies that he’d be able to hold a pen in his hand.

  18. Scooter

Pavano’s picture is next to the definition of “sunk cost”

No idea what his exact recovery timetable is – but I don’t think he’ll be ready to pitch until mid-season

  19. gayle

Chris that is exactly what was speculated in the papers this AM as by signing him to a minor league deal that is the only way they could still collect the inisurance while at the same time getting him off the 40 man roster.

  20. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

Buster O is an idiot. He thinks the Mets can trade Heilman for AJ Bernett. excuse me while I pick myself off the floor.

So we should trade Chase Wright for him.

  21. Bill Porter

Pavano accidentally stuck the pen up his nose rupturing his left sinus cavity. He’ll be out an additional 6 months. Sad, very sad.

  22. 180 degrees

OK…we all need to take a look in the mirror on this….we are looking at Rule 5 draft now ?…..Maybe take a walk, say hi to our families,,,,interact with the REAL humans, not just the online people… LOL

  23. Jake

Wow, talk about a crazy week of rumors.

I am so happy it is over and that neither the Yankees or Red Sox ended up with Johan Santana. Let’s just take our chances in Free Agency if he makes it that far.

  24. mel

    Bill Porter,

Funny. I now have a picture in my head of Pavano in a full body cast in traction.

  25. Yanksrule57

    180 degrees,

You mean there are other things to do on a weekend besides reading over 2000 posts discussing a trade that never happened? Who knew?

  26. Jake

    180 Degrees,

I totally agree. While I am certainly pleased that Pete went out of his way to give us this info, I am not sure how much I care.

We’re not going to find our own little Johan in the Rule V like the Twins did…or was that a sandwich pick?

  27. Paulie

I’m out here in San Francisco and haven’t heard anything about the Yankees and Giants talking about Matsui. Although, the GM Sabean is apparently are shopping Tim Lincecum around – talking to the Blue Jays with Alex Rios. I’m all for a Hideki Matsui for Tim Lincecum package. The kid is legit – even at 90 poounds when he’s wet. Plus it would make the likes of IPK and/or Hughes expendable, if they’re not included in these Giants talks.

  28. ray

    Mel,
I am sensing you are a BIG Pavano fan! lol

  29. Yanksrule57

    Paulie,

Lincecum is a nice looking pitcher. I don’t stay up for many west coast MLB games anymore, but I made a point of watching a couple of his starts last year. That said, the Yanks are not going to trade IPK or Hughes for him. If the Giants have concerns, you can be sure the Yankees are not operating in a vacuum and have the same concerns.

  30. GreenBeret7

Actually, the Pavano thing was being discussed in rumors, but, I’m sure the insurance thing is tied in somehow, if it happenes.

  31. hmmm

“Buster O is an idiot. He thinks the Mets can trade Heilman for AJ Bernett. excuse me while I pick myself off the floor.”

it really is hilarious how much Met fans think Heilman is worth.

he’s a middle reliever who would have an ERA around 4 in the american league.

  32. Jay

Why did the Yankees bother taking anyone in the Rule V? They’re going to keep a 26-year-old AA pitcher on the major-league roster all year?? How pointless.

  33. Jack Florham Park

Jay- I may be wrong but on the minor league rule 5 level I think all you’ve got to do is have him at the AAA level all year, not with the big club.
