Pettitte agrees to terms

Peter Abraham
December
12

Andy Pettitte was put back on the roster when he accepted arbitration last week. His contract is now official and the Yankees will have a conference call with the big lefty this morning.

Brian “Ask Hank” Cashman will not be doing the call, unfortunately.

Pettitte will pitch for $16 million in 2008. At some point, the Yankees will get around to admitting they have signed Mariano Rivera and Alex Rodriguez. We should hear about LaTroy Hawkins around the Super Bowl.

Exchanged a few e-mails with Chien-Ming Wang yesterday and wrote today that he wants a multi-year deal with the Yankees.

It’s a mystery to me why the Yankees don’t sign players like Wang and Cano to long-term deals. The Indians have done that with their players and the Mets made team-friendly deals with Jose Reyes and David Wright.

But the Yankees wouldn’t do it for Derek Jeter, so they’re probably not doing it for Wang and Robinson Cano.

Finally, Japanese outfielder Kosuke Fukudome signed a four-year deal with the Cubs. The Yankees were never interested and it’s probably just as well. I’m trying to picture what John Sterling’s home-run call would be for him.

“It is high, it is deep … ”

I better stop there and keep my job. Just dropped a lot of money on Christmas presents.

maybe if wang had pitched well in the playoffs last year, it’d be a different story.

  2. Tseng

Haha, playoff performance didn’t stop Arod from getting 275 million and 10 years Bskul.

The Yanks apparently don’t want to risk a long term contract with young “unproven” players. They only give that to old, declining proven stars. Oh well.

  3. Buddy Biancalana

    bskul-

    Great argument!!! Not really.

  4. DVB

Pete….I think Stand Up Comic is your next promotion. You are too funny. Great blog, friend. Keep it up ! :-)

  5. Russell NY

Tseng – who said A-Rod is declining? Just because you reach a certain age doesn’t automatically mean decline. See: Brett Favre. I guess the Yanks would like to overpay per year for shorter contracts on relatively-unproven players to avoid being hampered by contracts with injuries and/or poor seasons by the players. It’s a gamble, but understandable. For a lot of people, it is human nature to become a little lax when you are locked into a contract where you know that no matter what you do, you are being paid and are practically guaranteed a spot because of all the years that have been dedicated to you. You put a player on a short-term contract that is ending in a year or two and you get seasons from them like Posada, who conveniently picked the year before his new contract to have an all-star season. Not saying he dogged his past seasons by any means, but he had a lot more reason to play strong.

  6. Doreen

    Pete,

Funny! “get around to admitting” I liked that!

Perhaps the Yankees will have a change of heart this time around and sign Cano and Wang to multi-year deals. If they don’t, what then? Re-visit at free agency? Actually, since the Yankees are in kind of save money mode, perhaps they will do something different this time around.

  7. J-Dawg

That would probably be a very good investment for the Yankees to give Cano and Wang long-term deals. They are both terrific young players who are going to continue to get better before hitting their prime, especially Cano. It’s well documented that Wanger struggled in the playoffs, but he can and will bounce back. If the Yankees are interested in breaking their protocol at the slightest, these are the two players to give long-term deals.

Pete, I also wondered about a Sterling home run call for Fukudome late last night. It could have been funny to hear. I’m not going to get too far into details describing the possible calls, however. :)

  8. hmmm

if wang was as good as a-rod, he’d have his contract. but he’s not.

i would lock up cano during 2008 but wait 1 more year for wang. there are a lot of unanswered questions with wang after last season.

  9. raymagnetic (SANTANA IS LEGEND)

You put a player on a short-term contract that is ending in a year or two and you get seasons from them like Posada, who conveniently picked the year before his new contract to have an all-star season.

But Posada was pretty much the same hitter he’s always been last year. His BABIP (Batting Average of Balls In Play) was .386. Which means he made a lot of contact and nearly 40% of the balls he hit fell in for base hits. All of his other numbers were in line with his career norms.

  10. Juke Early

Fukudome is a player? I thought it was a Japanese reality show!

  11. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX")

oh boy Clemens and Pettite have been leaked

  12. ThatWasMe

    juke early
I thought Fukudome was an indoor stadium.

  13. Peter Abraham

So, Hmm, A-Rod is the standard to give a player a contract? Then I guess nobody gets one.

Wang is 38-13, 3.67 with 417 innings pitched the last two seasons. Yes, he was lousy in the playoffs, the second time on short rest. But he has been great for two years.

  14. GuidryBall

    Pete:

its… “It is high, it is FAR” not “deep”…

come on and get your Sterlingisms right.

  15. hmmm

“So, Hmm, A-Rod is the standard to give a player a contract? Then I guess nobody gets one.”

huh? i was specifically replying to Tseng.

i agree comparing him to A-Rod was silly, that was my point.

    apologize for being unclear.

  16. Mike

Comparing Arod’s playoff appearance to Wang is ridiculous. Apples and oranges.

  17. hmmm

“Wang is 38-13, 3.67 with 417 innings pitched the last two seasons. Yes, he was lousy in the playoffs, the second time on short rest. But he has been great for two years.”

i am a big Wang fan.

but he changed his approach this season from 2006, and the results were a little erratic.

the yankees have 4 seasons to get a deal done. every year they wait, they gather more and more valuable information about Wang. it might cost them to wait, but they are rich and are willing to pay for that extra information.

Wang is a VERY unorthodox pitcher, and there are VERY few pitchers in the history of baseball who have maintained long-term success with such low strikeout rates.

i THINK he can strike a balance between the 2 approaches he’s used in 2006 (heavy sinker after heavy sinker) and 2007 (more sliders, more strikeouts) and continue to be successful.

but i think it would be prudent for the yankees to watch his 2008 season and talk long-term deals next off-season. just my opinion.

  18. Mike R.

Why in the world would we offer Wang a 3 year deal? It makes no sense. If we go long term I would prefer to give Wang 4 or 5 years and give Cano 6. The idea is to go into their FA years as a cost control measure.

  19. yankee21

hmmm, I totally agree with your assessment on Wang.

I would begin talks with Cano on a LT contract. He has proven himself. Not to the scale of Wright or Reyes, but nonetheless, worth tying him up for a few years.

I would also like the Yankees to initiate talks with Pettite for 2009.

  20. DLev

I wonder if now that Cashman has more power if the contract policy will change. Especially since Cano and Wang would be more valuable as trade assets if they’re locked up beyond the first couple of years of free agency. Not that I want them to be traded.

  21. JRVJ

I get the impression that Cashman has decided that he’s not giving anyone a deal until and when their contract expires. Then, Cashman is quite willing to pay a premium to retain that player, if the Yankees want to keep him (safe in the knowledge that nobody can outbid the Yankees if that player is not deadset against returning to the Yankees).

That’s exactly what happened with Mariano and Posada, and I suspect that is what’s happening with Wang and Cano.

Is it the best decision to take?

That’s open to discussion, though you could argue that Cashman is decreasing his risk that the player will get injured/suck and the Yanks will be stuck with a bad contract until and when he absolutely has to pull the trigger.

  22. whozat

“oh boy Clemens and Pettite have been leaked”

Is that actually true, or is this the same speculation that’s been going on all along because someone heard maybe Grimsley had mentioned them?

  23. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

He didn’t post a link or site a source, so I don’t believe him.

  24. Mister Delaware

Neither are really that pressing given that they’re both under contract through 2011. I guess Cano makes more sense; his arbitration could get very expensive assuming he’s compared to the other 2Bs in the league. Right now, Wanger is a low K pitcher who will be 32 in his first free agent season. Not sure why there would be any sense of urgency there; let him go another two years and, if he’s still safely under 4.25 or whatever, maybe think about buying out his first two free agent years. A 6 or 7 year deal at this point doesn’t do much.

  25. Buddy Biancalana

    Jennifer-

You nailed that one, why would either of them take anything, just don’t buy it.

  26. Buddy Biancalana

According to Mark Feinsand via River Ave Blues, Bruney will be offered a contract.

  27. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers!

So I guess this means we’ll know the Yankees’ 40-man sometime around Valentine’s day…

    (they) move in mysterious ways…

    (Good morning all…sleep well?)

  28. whozat

“He didn’t post a link or site a source, so I don’t believe him.”

Brandon doesn’t make stuff up, though. Sometimes he doesn’t really read carefully and misses details. Given that we started to hear noise that they were mentioned in Grimsley’s testimony last year (with no info about the context in which they were mentioned, if at all), it wouldn’t surprise me if that speculation was dredged up again now.

  29. Mister Delaware

Like PA said, this is little more than informed gossip. Mitchell’s involvement with Boston inherently adds question marks to every AL East player named in the report, whether or not there is any actual bias. Besides, if 400 players used during that timespan (my estimate), only 50-60 are named and the main source was a Mets clubhouse kid, which team do you think is going to get nailed the worst? Is it because the Mets were dirtier or just because their supplier happened to roll over unlike others who aren’t yet known?

  30. GreenBeret7

Supposedly, NYY and Wang are talking multi-years. Hopefully they buy out Cano and Wang’s 4 years of arbitration taking them to FA.

  31. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

Oh I didn’t realize that Brandon posted that. Well I’m hoping he is wrong.

In an effort to bolster the Mets bullpen, Omar Minaya has reached agreement with RHP Feliz Navida. The inking of the contract will take place in Queens on Dec. 26th.

  34. whozat

“Like PA said, this is little more than informed gossip. ”

riveraveblues has a post with some quotes from coaches and managers that were interviewed that are really quite damning. They weren’t asking for witnessed stuff…they were asking “well, who do you _think_ took PEDs? Who gained mass ’suspiciously’ quickly?”

They were asking for speculation. That’s just not ok. I’m not going to speculate when someone’s livelihood and/or reputation could hinge on my guesses, the stakes are just too high.

Does this put Brandon on the Blog of Fame now?

  37. GreenBeret7

I bet it doesn’t happen, Mike R. As always, the Mets will be a day late and a dollar short.

  38. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    Mike R. -

    Very true.

  39. sunny615

I thought I got to vote on BOF inductees?

  40. sunny615

ACtually, the Mets are 7 games away and 5 pitchers and 1 ss short.

  41. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX")

Does this put Brandon on the Blog of Fame now?

nope it was me. I heard it on 1050ESPN George Mitchell new conference 2pm tomorrow, and someone told Brian Kenney and Max Kellerman from the show before them a guest, my guess is Olney or Gammons but they put a big possibility Roger and Andy will be one of the 60 names.. we’ll see

  42. Joe Go (Cano Fan)

Sign Cano now for long term (maybe 6-7 years) before his numbers go up it would be worth every penny
Wang on the other hand maybe give a shorter deal or wait a year

  43. Phil

right now, Cano and Wang offer them a few more years of flexibility. They have a long time before they need to lock them up.

I will be very upset if Andy is named. But I’ll still love him. Roger I could care less about.

  47. Khoa

Speaking of Sterling’s calls and LaTroy, how about “Whoa! That’s some spicy sauce from LaTroy!”

  48. GreenBeret7

I don’t think Pettitte would come back if there was a chance that his name was on it.

  49. Neil

Both of my roommates just asked what was wrong with me after my hysterical laughter to the John Sterling home run call line.

  50. Tseng

Hm, I don’t mean to link Arod to old and declining, that second part was geared more towards other players the Yanks have inked to multi year contracts (Mussina, Giambi, Posada, and Mo)

Though, yeah, no options better out there than Posada and Mo, so they were pretty crucial to sign. And I do think 10 years is too long for Arod.

  51. jessica

Will Wang enter his FA at age of 30?In my opinion,Yankees should give Wang and Cano long term deals since the way to do business in baseball has changed a lot.Yankees front office should follow the trend and avoid paying extra money for that “tradition”.If I have to choose one of them to give long term deals,I will give to Wang before Cano based on this crazy pitching market and example of Pavano.

Do you know how much money Yankees will have to pay Wang if Wang go on FA this off-season?I know most of you guys want to throw Wang out of window after this playoff, but He won 72% of his starts at his career so far.You can say all you want about run support.Wang doesn’t win all his games because of offense,he has almost 3.5 ERA in the AL East and give Yankees a chance to win almost every time out.You can say all you want how good Santana is,but the truth of matter is Santana career ERA against AL East close to 4.I don’t mean Wang is better than Santana, but don’t sell Wang low.In my opinion, this playoff is good experience for Wang young career because it set up for failure for him from the beginning.Wang had 7-days rest for game 1 on the road and then 3-days rest for game 2.After this year,he will know how to deal with that.Wang’s work ethic, toughness,low-keyed personality and the ability to deal with pressure are without question. That’s why I will choose to give Wang before Cano if I have to choose one of them. You guys all see what happen to Pavano.Personality sometimes play an important role when you decide to give a player long term contract.

  52. hmmm

“Hm, I don’t mean to link Arod to old and declining, that second part was geared more towards other players the Yanks have inked to multi year contracts (Mussina, Giambi, Posada, and Mo)”

    fair enough, no problem.

  53. gianthinker

Not offering Wang a long term deal is stupid. Is he a true ace? No. But he’s won 19 games the last two years and we know he can pitch in NY. We’d be dumb if we didn’t lock him down to be a #2 or #3 for years to come.
