The Dodgers announced some of players they invited to spring training. Among them was Tanyon Sturtze.
Sturtze? Check. Scott Proctor? Check. All Joe Torre needs now is Mike Stanton and Tom Gordon and he’ll be good to go.

and ruben sierra, joe loved him
My guess is that their arms got separate invitations.
Maybe Torre is carrying a guilt complex and will tell Sturtze and Proctor they’ll be used slightly less than they were with the Yankees.
Don’t forget Paul Quantrill…
… which means that the Dodgers will be in the market for relievers come mid-May.
my, my.
I thought Sturtze had some critical comments about Joe when he got cut? Am I making that up?
Grahem LLoyd!
With Sturtze and Proctor in the pen…their offseason bullpen search is done. Because you know those are the only two people Torre will call on. The Dodgers might as well go with a 2-man pen and a 10-man bench.
Ugh. I feel bad for Dodger fans. Torre’s pets will not get the job done.
we could really use proctor back in our pen – i still dont understand why we traded our most useful arm in the pen (other than Mo and Joba) last yr for a utility infielder. Is it because he burned all his equipment? If proctor is traded for that, I think farnsworth should have been traded long ago for the many antics he has pulled.
What Yankees want for Matsui
Posted: Wednesday December 12, 2007 07:32AM ET
A baseball official said there “wasn’t anything imminent” last night in regards to the Yankees dealing Hideki Matsui to the Giants for pitching. Though the Yankees likely can’t pry Tim Lincecum or Matt Cain from the Giants and aren’t wild about Noah Lowry, they have interest in lefty Jonathan Sanchez, who appeared in 33 games last year and made four starts.
thats from Jon Heyman. what do the Yankees like so much about Sanchez?
You can not forget Paul Quantrill…I’m willing to bet, he twitches whenever the phone rings at his house.
Nelson baby. He will get a call throwing his side-arm.
NELSONNNNN
Phil, the Dodgers rode Quantrill like a reented mule for years before he ever got to NYY.
Dude. Guys. You can buy uranium ore on Amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ.....dp_product
I know what I want for Christmas.
Whether or not the Dodgers abused Quantrill, Torre still put the final nail in his arm’s coffin. His innings total jumped under Torre from Quantrill’s days in LA with the same ridiculous number of appearances.
Which year did Torre abuse the Great Tanyon Sturtze?
http://www.baseball-reference......ta01.shtml
what is era+??
Really? Look at Quantrill’s workload the previous 7 years with Toronto and LA. The rest of the year, Quantrill seemed pretty healthy with San Diego.
http://www.baseball-reference......pa01.shtml
Seems like he got hurt in Florida.
According to Jayson Stark:
Mitchell Investigation’s total cost will be end up being anywhere from $25M to $60M…
dang
The same people that complain about Torre’s body count with pitchers that claim he never won anything as a NL manager. They hasven’t a clue, or, just feel the need to complain for the Hell of it.
Well, get used to body counts, kiddies. Take a look at Girardi’s body count in Florida.
will these jokes ever go away?
I thought Sturtze had some critical comments about Joe when he got cut? Am I making that up?
You’re making it up. Sturtze was never cut, he had shoulder surgery in beginning of the 2006 season. He was brought back in 2007, instead he signed a contract with the Braves. He had nothing but good words about Torre.. I think Pete might have reported on that himself. Him and Torre are pretty close.
Boston Dave,
Basically, the cost of a #3 starter and a middle reliever these days.
Probably already said, but also Miguel Cairo?
Well, he’s not a pitcher, but Torre loved him.
Rowand 5 year 60 mil?Matsui and Damon contracts are looking better everyday. Maybe we should lock up Cano and Wang before these dumb overreacting teams (k.c.,s.f.)sign someone else and inflate the market even more.
SJ: Well that’s one way to look at it! LMAO
SJ44 – and I’m guessing that it will be as productive and worthwhile as Kyle Lohse and JC Romero.
still seems like a ton of money to fly a guy around the country and do some interviews.
I can see Bernie Williams reporting to Vero Beach for a chance as a pinch hitter and 5th outfielder.
I dont know if that was meant as a joke or not,but its not far fetched. Bernie still will not put the glove up and continues to say that he wants to comeback. Torre can have him and at the same time Leiter can fly there with him.
Here’s the thing. Tomorrow is going to be the day the voyeurs in the game (mainly, the media) have been waiting for.
A bunch of names and (guessing) without much proof behind it, will be divulged. Names that have come from people who are bitter (Canseco) over their careers or rats (like Radomski) who are looking to get lesser sentences for their crimes.
The reality is, how can you penalize players for acts that were not against baseball rules at the time they (supposedly) used PED’s?
Its why this entire thing has been nothing more than a witch hunt.
Its a shame, really. Look at the game right now. Record attendance, record revenues, its clear the fans don’t care about this stuff as much as the media cares about it.
Yet, I suspect, some guys are going to get tarred tomorrow and that’s a rotten shame.
Buster Olney is on with Michael Kay and said Johan Santana will be traded to the Sox in 2-3 days. Did not sound like speculations, sounded like it was pretty much a done deal.
Scott Proctor said his good-byes. “I’m glad (Joe Torre) put me in as many games as he did,†he said. “I have nothing but respect for him.â€
This is from a July 31st Lohud Blog entry. I predict proctor appears in 75+ games this year.
SJ: Sounds like you’re in favor of everyone rereading The Crucible!
I do agree with you–hard to punish guys when what they were doing at the time wasn’t illegal…
I, for one, am simply interested to see how the Yankees/red sox ratio turns out
look for them to sign Vizcaino and Andy Philips! Another 2 of Joe’s favorite.
Honestly, let them have him. If the Twins are that in love with Jacoby Ellsbury or John Lester and/or want to settle for a lesser deal, then that’s on them. In the immortal words of Donald Rumsfeld, “You go to war with the army you have.” If we have the kids, I’m all right with that.
SJ -
Agree 100%. Its harder to blame the players for using something that wasnt technically against the rules, and certainly wasnt tested for, when millions of dollars and extra success, fame, etc… than it is to blame MLB as a whole for not taking it more seriously or at least entertaining the idea that something wasn’t right.
I am a bit concerned about the potential Clemens and Pettite inclusion (in addition to others). The media will have plenty of fun slinging mud at those types of guys for years to come.
RE: Santana to Sox
I heard Buster Olney a week or so back claim that he spoke to anonymous Yankees officials and the majority of the front office was actually hoping the Sox got Santana… they of course hoped they would give up as much young talent as possible and commit to the massive contract extension.
Anyone else hear that?
Boston Dave:
I find that hard to believe. Letting the Sox get Santana without a fight is basically conceding the AL East for the next 4 years.
I disagree, MikeinBH. You still have to play the games, and anything can happen during the course of a season. The Sox roster will probably start to look a lot different in the next few years as well with some of their older guys turning over.
Here’s the thing people don’t realize. Over the counter stuff you can get at GNC can trigger positive test results.
The entire industry is rife with fraud. Most of the labels on things you buy at GNC are mislabeled and many people don’t know it unless you test what you buy.
How many people are going to do that?
An example of what I am talking about is Andro.
It was a legal, over the counter supplement when it first hit the market in 1997.
But, once you take it, it turns into an anabolic steroid and NOBODY knew that for the first few years it was on the market. That’s why it was available over the counter.
There is so much about supplements and PED’s that are unknown to the general public, its not funny.
Its why the issue is not a black and white, “he cheated, he didn’t”, type of deal.
Unfortunately, in its zeal to suck up to Congress, Bud Selig may have opened a can of worms he will wish he never opened.
I’m not saying that folks didn’t cheat. I am saying a majority of players today take supplements. Its the only way to get through a 162 game season in 181 days.
Some may have taken bad supplements and had no idea what they were taking. Yet, they will get tarred (possibly) in the Mitchell Report tomorrow. That’s just unacceptable to me.
Mike in BH:
Curt Schilling agrees with you. He said earlier today that he believes the Sox will get Santana AND
they will have to hit a couple bad losing streaks in order to ONLY win 120 games next year.
I personally think that would make the Sox VERY good for a few years but if it backfired at all… it might be enough to mess the team up for 5+ seasons.
SJ44 – excellent point. I think right now the onus is on the players to do some research on anything they put in their bodies… but that certainly wasnt the case until very recently.
SJ44 some of the names on the list are players who failed test in 03. Remember that 7% of players that year it came out that they failed drug test but they never gave any names. Well tomorrow those names will be revealed.
Interesting information as usual SJ44. Since I haven’t been following the investigation that closely, are the names on the list from former baseball players or clubhouse attendants or are the names from the Florida pharmacy???
The Ghost,
Im with on this one. Who would of thought that Beckett would be a Cy Young runner up after getting bombed in 06.
For anyone to concede not just next year but the next 4 to 6 is premature. No one can predict how these players stats will end up and who gets the injury bug. Will Beckett pitch the same? Will Manny continue to degress? Ortiz is knee hold up? Lowell’s numbers an aboration? Dice k be more hittable the second time around? Will Schilling throw 86 mile and hour fast balls? Too many questions that cant be answered with certanty.
We are starting to sound like sox fans after we picked up Arod in the offseason. They crowned us champs before opening day.
All Im trying to say is let the games begin before we judge the season.
SJ-yes it wasnt a in the rules yet when they took these PED. But just remember it was and still is illegal in the u.s. So it was still wrong to do and I know there wont be any suspension, but I wouldnt be upset if there was.
SoS27, I’m serious. I think Bernie will give it a crack.
sos –
OTC supplements were not illegal. you missed SJ’s point.
Green Beret, wait until after tomorrow before you use “crack” in the same sentence as Bernie. dont want to start any rumors.
I wouldn’t trade Phil Hughes for the entire Boston Package…The Twinkies are giving Santana away for that package…They ask the Yankees for 2 of their 3 best and settle for a player that is a rich man’s Brett Gardner, a kid who many scouts feel is a utility infielder and a bullpen arm at best… and a throw in…I know smith grew up in the middle of Redsox Nation but this is ridiculous…
Boston Dave,
I understand you could get andro over the counter, but that doesnt mean that everyone went to g.n.c. to get better. Like Conseco mentioned even the owners knew they were shooting each other up during the season. So yes, if the test could tell us which is which then fine.
But even I knew that androstine had some steroid in it. As I asked the farmasist about it. I just cant believe that they would take the “cream” without knowing whats going in their bodies.
SJ: I didn’t realize it about that stuff in GNC (I don’t even remember the last time I was even in GNC)
It’s gonna be really interesting, ten years from now, opening the history books and seeing what we say about the ’90s and ’00s in baseball…
The Red Sox getting Johan Santana will be very bad news for the Yankees. No matter how we try to rationalize it, they become a better team.
If the Yanks get 15 wins out of Pettitte, Wang and one other pitcher, they could be competitive. If not, Cashman has flushed $200mil down the toilet.
I betcha Viz signs with the Dodgers too.
SOS – I understand… just pointing out that SJ was referring to the OTC stuff that most people did not realize would lead to a positive test or would eventually end up on the banned substance list. SJ acknowledges that there was some conscious cheating but that this issue is not as black and white as some people may think it is.
Man, Schilling is full of himself! Or full of something.
120 wins. Uhm-hmm.
As for the report -
One thing I’m also not very happy about is the timing of this report. I really don’t see why, after all this time, they couldn’t wait until just past the New Year. This is going to sound silly to some, I guess, but every person whose name is in that report is going to be called a cheater, true or not. Now, this is going to be headline stuff and not for nuthin’ but it is the holiday season, and these guys are human beings with families. It is going to be bad enough having to deal with indignant fans and media; but they’re also going to have to endure all of this during a time of year when stress is at a highpoint to begin with. Would it really have made too much of a difference to delay this until, say, January 4th? After they had Christmas dinner with nasty Cousin Charley, who’s always been a little jealous? Or cute Uncle Johnny who seems to get a thrill picking on everyone’s little mishaps?
VOIII – I tend to agree with you but I was very surprised to hear Buster Olney report what he did (Regarding the Yanks actually wanting the Sox to get Santana for the prospects and commit $150M). That doesn’t mean it’s true… but its curious.
Doreen –
excellent point. I never thought of that.
Boston Dave,
Its unfortunate for the one that took something over the counter that m.l.b. will see it as a black and white. Also after all the others seem to deny using it. They will not be believed like a man in jail claiming hes innocent. Very unfortunate..
SoS27, as good as Santana is, that park eats up left handed pitching. Very few lefties have been able to make a living in that park. David Wells was good. Lefty Grove, Mel Parnell, Bill Lee and Bruce Hurst were the only ones that I can think of. They all had winning records, but, none had a ERA less the 3.60. Whitey Ford had a losing record and an ERA over 6.50
Sports-world-wise, delaying it until the beginning of January will probably be akin to trying to sweep it under a cover
That is, my assumption is that the sports nation would be hungover from the BCS games from January 1-3 (at least, for those people who care about college level American Football…)
Last week a study found that 13 of 52 tested over the counter nutritional supplements were secretly spiked with anabolic steroids.
In none of the supplements were steroids listed as ingredients.
The basic idea was to not disclose the supplement actually had steroids to avoid FDC regulation. That way it wouldn’t be labeled as a drug but it would still make people
magically get bigger.
No way to tell unless the supplement was independently tested for steroids.
http://www.usatoday.com/sports.....ocus_N.htm
Greenberet,
Good info. Does that mean he might allow more homers than this year?
Whoops, forgot that the BCS championship game is on January 7; the other 4 games in that crazy, senseless series take place January 1-3
CB – holy crap. I havent taken supplements in a few years but apparently if I played baseball I’d be on the Mitchell report tomorrow.
To put it lightly, that info is SCARY!
Yeah, I’d think it’s possible, SoS27. If he keeps being a flyball pitcher like last year, 40 isn’t out of the question. Look what Bucky Dent did to a mistake…Bucky Effin” Dent, we’re talking about.
Mike and the Mad Dog ran with the Mitchell report today. Mike actually passed a piece of paper to Russo while he was talking to a caller, and it was clear that there was a name on the piece of paper. They went as far as to say they had general information about the two New York teams — as in which ran heavy on the report, which didn’t, I’m guessing — and one big name. But other than that, just some coy hints and a little doomsaying.
Tomorrow’s going to be interesting.

Don’t forget Dr. Andrews.
Doreen–I guess the timing is such so that teams will have more time to adapt to the findings, if they wish to change their rosters or alter unfinalized player contracts.
The cost of the study represents a naming rights fee that MLB has to pay to rent Senator Mitchell’s name for publication on the cover of the report that will be heralded as the watershed event that cleanses baseball of all sins.
I would feel much better about the report if another ex-Senator and Hall of Famer…Jim Bunning led the commissions efforts in full.
Senator Mitchell’s affiliation with the Boston Red Sox does muddy the waters somewhat and partially compromises his ability to be the final arbiter of the contents of the report (what was included and what was left out).
Boston Dave,
The nutritional supplements market is a $23 billion dollar industry.
If anywhere close to 25% of the products are tainted with steroids that is an tremendous national problem.
Even is the study is off by 50% or even 75% the result would still be alarming.
For athletes its really an issue. I’m sure nearly all professional athletes take some kind of supplement. That study made me think twice about all of the people who fail tests and claim to be wrongly accused.
CB – maybe MLB should come up with an approved supplement list… kinda like Kosher Supplements?
but you are right. that is alarming and it’s clear MLB needs to take some extra steps in their testing as well as educating players as much as they can.
I think sports leagues need to start instituting their own independent testing of commonly taken products or the specific supplement products players take.
The players may need to report that these are the products i’m taking/ thinking of taking and submit them to the league for testing.
That and the FDA needs to get involved with the supplements market again – but that’s a very long standing issue.
In 3 Fenway regular season starts, C C Sabbathia is 1-1 2.35. Randy Johnson is 8 -2, but with a 5.01 ERA.
Good power pitchers can succeed there. I think we’re grasping at straws if we think Santana won’t.
Boston Dave: Kosher supplements! I love it!
And it’s really not a half bad idea.
I’m more interested in Selig’s press conference than I am Mitchell’s. There’s been enough speculation and I think most folks know what the gist of the Mitchell Report will be.
I want to see Bud Selig stand in front of the camera and admit that he and the owners knew that these huge, muscular athletes weren’t getting their muscle mass just from drinking milk and lifting weights.
I want to see Bud Selig say the truth. And the truth is that Selig and the owners fell in love with the money they were making from increased attendance and new found media attention given to the game they tried to kill in ‘94.
The owners turned a blind eye when the Brady Andersons of baseball sent balls soaring into the seats as fast as the owners could stuff the money into their pockets.
When Bud Selig suspends himself, then, and only then, will I be impressed.
Drive: powerful stuff.
And I am lead to agree.
George Mitchell’s report on drugs in baseball will finger MVPs and All-Stars, The Associated Press learned Wednesday.
not sure if that’s new news (ex. caminiti qualifies) but maybe there will be higher profile guys that we dont already know about.
Luis Vizcaino is close to deciding between offers from the Pirates or Rockies, sources told FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal.
Supposedly the rockies were only willing to offer the viz a two year deal.
His agent was claiming he had 3-4 year offers in hand.
Interesting to see what happens there. Maybe the rockies increased their offer?
Or were the pirates the 4 year offer he had?
Here’s 24 of the 60-80 names from the Mitchell Report.
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/ne.....;type=lgns
Selig is such a phony. He’s going to put on a sad face. But Bud Selig is as much a part of the Steroid Era as any player. It happened under his watch.
And it never could have happened without the implied consent of a group of owners and Selig himself that had little interest in serious drug testing.
Blargh -
My husband would have known about the bowl games!
pat,
What a coincidence that there’s not one Mitchell employee…ooops, I mean Red Sox player on that list.
Maybe they will be on the next one. lol
Drive 4-5,
Seriously…. they didnt even consider reviewing the drug testing program until they got “caught”.
How am I going to work tomorrow listening to this news conference? Don’t they think of us when they do it? If they did it at 1pm I wouldn’t have a problem.
Drive 4-5
Jeremy Giambi, and Gabe Kapler. Mark it down. Those will be the only ones named from the soxs. Which will prove my point that it is total bs.
Update on news conferences now the plyers are having one at 6 lol
Pat in terms of that list it doesnt say they are in the reprt HOWEVER those are all names that have come out before this in various news stories etc
Marvin Benard?!?!?! I think he just got a contact high from standing too close to Barry Bonds.
WOW. Did you see that list? Not one player from The Pirates or the Phillies!!!!
Senator Mitchells Pro-pensylvania bias rears its ugly head once again.
LOL Nick In SF
RosterRooster Oh come on. You can’t tell me if their were Yankees mentioned, and no soxs you wouldn’t be suspicious??
Dodgers non-tendered LHP Mark Hendrickson.
Probably a long shot but he might be worth the Yanks trying him as a lefty specialist if he’s willing to make the transition. I’m not sure how much interest he’ll get but if he’s willing to sign a minor league deal it’s worth exploring.
lefties have a .699 OPS against him over the last 3 seasons.
Gayle
They are citing the same sources that were supposedly being used by the Mitchell team so if those names aren’t in the report, the Senator has no credibility.
Not sure if it’s true but I heard the anonymous drug test that the players had that came up with 7% had used PED’s is not going to be used to name names because it would be against the CBA.
Okay some people said that Andy was impicated, I went to the steriod era website, the source that says Andy was implicated was
But everyone forgets this part.
I posted this earlier today and SJ44 as usual boiled it down much more concisely than I could but I am concerned about putting these names out with little proof. One poster welcomed this saying that the players would be tried in the court of public opinion and that was a good thing.
Well I would ask the Duke Lacrosse players what they thought of that court. Did they get a fair deal in the media?
Raymond Donovan was Sec of Labor under Reagan. He was falsely and maliciously prosecuted after being trashed for months in the media. At the end of trial the jury took less than an hour to aquit him. When interviewed about the results he famously asked “Where do I go to get my reputation back?”
I ask you after these guys names are put out there with no positive test results in the vast majority of cases; with no option to defend themselves in a court of law; no option to dispute the evidence other than when confronted in an interview with the accuser, where do they go to get their reputations back?
Pat I have no doubt that those names will be in thre all I was saying is that these are all names we have heard or read about before so nothing new as far as I was concerned.
Thanks. Still a typical superior way of looking at things, it’s really the reason I returned for your web log repeatedly!
