Randy Hendricks, the agent for Andy Pettitte, just e-mailed this statement:

“I have advised Andy that as an active player, he should refrain from commenting until we have had an opportunity to speak with his union and other advisors. At the appropriate time, he will have something to say.”

    Saw that one coming…

  2. SJ44

He has no other choice but to say nothing until the Union speaks and lays out their position.

  3. whoa

That’s all he can say at this point.

If Andy is guilty of anything, it was coming under the influence of that Clemens character.

  4. Chris NY

    Damn it Andy…

  5. Jeff

    Pete,
Thanks for the updates. Really not sure how I feel about all of this. Besides Balco(we already knew the players on that one), The naming of names resides soley on the Federal cooperation of one man? This whole report was baed on this? Bud should get some of his money back!

  6. Say it ain't so

Andy is in a difficult position here. Even if he did do HGH and wanted to come clean and admit that he did it 2-4 times, he’d be stabbing Clemens in the back because obviously if Andy did anything, Clemens did.

    WE LOVE YOU ANDY!!!!

  8. SJ44

That’s not it. He’s an active player (Clemens is not) and can’t do anything until the Union maps out their position and they read the entire report, ie: all of McNamee’s testimony.

I know folks want immediate responses but, that’s not how it works in the real world.

I suspect Pettitte will have a statement after the Union has made their position clear and he and his representatives have a chance to review all of what McNamee has to say about him in the Report.

Its amazing. MLB didn’t even give the Union the report in advance to be able to discuss it. They just laid it on them.

Meanwhile, Selig praises the report. Even though he admits he hasn’t read it.

    What a joke.

  10. Ice Age

Yea no this report has been so badly mishandled its not even funny.

“ts amazing. MLB didn’t even give the Union the report in advance to be able to discuss it. They just laid it on them.”

Mitchell decided not to share the report with the players union because the players more or less collectively decided not to cooperate with the investigation.

That was the reason he gave for not giving them a copy.

  12. Drive 4-5

The good news is that despite Mitchell’s focus on the Yankees there is no mention of Jeter, Posada, Mo or ARod. Also, the implications of the other players mostly occured after 2000.

What year was Knoblauch supposed to have done steroids?

Names and innuendo based on the testimony of two people?? Reputations being compromised and sullied forever based on this flimsy “evidence”? This seems really wrong…

Furthermore…why is it o.k. that a preponderance of names are from the two NY teams?? Seems a bit unfair…

    Andy…we still support you!!

I think the response from Hendricks is appropriate.

For the record, this does not change my opinion of Andy Pettitte in ANY way! He is still a terrific human being and a true Yankee. He is only guilty of getting mixed up with Roger Clemens (who is responsible for getting mixed up with Jose Canseco).

According to the report, he (allegedly) used HGH to “help his team” when he was on the DL so he could recover a little quicker. He didn’t do it to pump himself up, he did it for his team.

I think he will fair okay in this. If he was afraid of being on “the list,” he probably would have just retired.

  15. Mister Delaware

Andy shouldn’t even be in the report. How can Mitchell gather cancelled checks and the like on some players and just single sourced stories on others?

  16. Ravi

No wonder he signed the $16 MM deal before this report came out. It is a shame and may be Petitte should be thrown out of the game.

  17. Christine

    Ravi,

He didn’t need the money. He probably knew and consulted with the Yankees first before coming back. You are entitled to your opinion, of course.

  18. GL

    Ravi, are you kidding???????

  19. SAndMan

Yep.Guess we get SAntana now.I know the evidence isn’t drug tested but this isn’t a blog rumor.

Now we are gonna hear this every time Pettitte goes to Boston.Great gotta wait till 2009 till Andy Pettitte and Giambi is gone.

If Pettitte should be thrown out of the game, then so should Theo for acquiring a player that he knew was a steroid user:

    link:

…According to Mitchell, Sox general manager Theo Epstein acquired flop reliever Eric Gagne nearly a year after learning of serious circumstantial evidence of Gagne’s steroid use.

Gagne and Paul Lo Duca were teammates in Los Angeles from 1999 to 2004. During that time, Gagne used Lo Duca, who went on to a beloved career catching for the Mets (sorry, Paul), as his hook-up to steroid and human-growth hormone pusher Kirk Radomski. The Red Sox scouted Gagne, once a valuable relief pitcher, after the 2006 season, when Epstein began overhauling the Sox pitching staff. Yet a certain concern lingered. On November 1, 2006, Epstein emailed his scout, Mark Delpiano, “Have you done any digging on Gagne? I know the Dodgers think he was a steroid guy. Maybe so. What do you hear on his medical?”

    Delpiano replied:

Some digging on Gagne and steroids IS the issue. Has had a checkered medical past throughout career including minor leagues. Lacks the poise and commitment to stay healthy, maintain body and re invent [sic] self. What made him a tenacious closer was the max effort plus stuff.

Yet the Sox picked up Gagne from the Texas Rangers at the trade deadline during the 2007 season. What does that say about Epstein’s commitment to a steroid-free championship team?

I wouldn’t be surprised to hear an apology from Andy Pettitte alsong with the announcement of his retirement.

  22. Say it ain't so

It makes no sense for Andy to announce his retirement. He allegedly took HGH in the first place because he wanted to help his team. Now he’s going to desert his team when they desperately need him next season? Andy’s not going to run away from this.

  23. whoa

    Andy will retire…in two years.

  24. Don

i don’t see any reason for crucifying Pettitte for this, doesn’t it say he used HGH 2-4 times while rehabbing an elbow injury. maybe its just me, but i seriously doubt he needs to be made out as the worst of the worst among the guys named.
