Sweet deal. I love him through good and bad as a player (but he does think too much.) I don't love him for running his mouth - he needs to be more "vanilla" as Larry Bowa said. Anyone notice the comment on SportsCenter's Year in Review where A-Rod said: "...if you stop asking me about Jeter, I promise to stop lying to you guys." Nice.

Great expectations is an understatement.

Say what you will about him but no one can argue that it is not fun watching A-Rod play baseball for the NY Yankees whether he goes 5 for 5 or 0 for 5.

Contracts are also backloaded so that millions of dollars are earning Big Stein interest instead of the players for the next few years. The thing with this one though is that the money is piling on once Giambi and Pavano is off the books.

"They had a chance to send a message to stem the tide of salaries all around baseball. "

why do you assume they are interested in doing that?

isn't it in the yankees' best interest for the price of superstars to increase and the only team left standing who can afford them is the Yankees?

why would it be better for the yankees if every team could afford superstars?

"Couldn’t the Yanks have traded Matsui + cash to San Diego for Headley instead?"

no, they couldn't have.

People (especially my fellow Yanks fans) who write Pettitte off for being in the report need to be reminded that HGH was legal when he had his shots. And if they were for the purposes we've heard (assuming that info is true) then its no different than having a cortisone shot to heal an injury. Cortisone is also a steroid ... was cortisone part of the investigation? If it was like that, then he wasn't doing what Bonds or Giambi were doing.

Sox trolls: You're getting a little too pumped up on what amounts to hearsay for your own good. Note the limited sources of information. Note some obvious omissions from other teams. If trainers from the other 28 teams (or Canseco) were questioned and if they obliged with answers, then the list of players would increase proportionally. So would the number of players from that list being undeservedly slandered by the likes of you. You sound pretty .... arrogant .... considering how limited the report apparently is.

You back load a contract because a dollar years down the road is not worth as much as a present day dollar.

I totally agree with you about Arod. What were the Yankees thinking? They had a chance to send a message to stem the tide of salaries all around baseball. No matter how this is spun Arod and Boras still got paid maximum dollars when there was no credible suitor for his services in sight. I believe this contract as well as a few others was fiscally irresponsible on the part of the front office/ownership.

HGH is not an illegal drug. It is used in cases with injuries often suffered from sports but also many other injuries and chemical deficiencies. If you or I can get HGH why shouldn't a ballplayer be able to as well if there is an actual need for it? Why is HGH any different from using cortisone? If Curt Schilling wasn't using cortisone in 2004 he would not have been able to pitch. Using the drug enhanced his performance and made it possible to play.

So if Paul Byrd needed HGH to rebuild shoulder strength and HGH isn't illegal why should he be in any trouble for using it? Cortisone is proven to cause irreparable damage to joints. Did Schilling have to use it or could he have sat out the season and been okay to go 2005?

Bottom line should be that if it isn't illegal and any of us can buy it over the counter or get a (necessary) prescription for it then why should a ball player be denied if there is true need? I'm not saying that they all needed it or were prescribed it but to me HGH should be a non issue. At least until the FDA decides it shouldn't be used by anyone.
