Ha! Look who else got caught

December
13

One of the players implicated in the Mitchell Report was Toronto infielder Howie Clark.

He’s the guy who dropped the pop-up when Alex Rodriguez yelled at him in Toronto back in May. Clark allegedly received shipments of human growth hormone.

So Howie Clark gets ratted out by Kirk Radomski on the same day A-Rod gets $275 million from the Yankees. Alex had the first laugh and the last, it seems.

But beware publicity-seeking Jose Canseco. Denied admission to Mitchell’s press conference, Canseco went on Fox News and said he “couldn’t believe” A-Rod wasn’t in the report. In other news, Jose wants to write another book.

    Canseco is an @$$

  2. LC™

Oh please, Jose. If you had anything on Alex you would have said so in your first book. What a tool.

  3. kasey

great coverage today, pete. really insightful, informative and entertaining.

  4. J-Dawg

Howie Clark needs much more help than human growth hormone if he is unable to catch a pop-up. And you’re right on the money about Canseco. I’m sure that plans will come out for him to write another book very soon. He probably left some meat on the bone on purpose.

  5. rbizzler

I think that Alex is just the type of guy to slap a lawsuit on Mr. Canseco. I personally don’t really care for Alex’s personality, but it would be great to see someone held accountable for all of the allegations that have been thrown around.

  6. melky

I’m surprised that Ivan Rodriguez, Nomar and Luis Gonzales, Sosa, etc were not named, but then again the guys that named names were all affiliated with the Yanks or Mets. or so it seems.

Did any reporters, in questioning Mitchell, ask about the questionable/sordid reputations of their sources and how they all had something to gain by naming names.

  7. Dave

Here in Boston, Canseco went on WEEI a few months ago and stated he was already writing a 2nd book and it will have a lot on A-Rod. He wouldn’t say if it was steroid related or character based and was looking for the publicity.

  8. Buddy Biancalana

    Pete-

SJ44 commented yesterday about Canseco being upset A Rod wouldn’t loan him any money, hence the implication to PEDS by Canseco. Have you ever heard anything like that?

  9. Boston George Left Him Off The List

“So Howie Clark gets ratted out by Kirk Radomski on the same day A-Rod gets $275 million from the Yankees. Alex had the first laugh and the last, it seems.”

Nice knowing you Howie. As A-Rod once said, “HA!”

  10. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

Someone should tell Jose to crawl back into the hole he just came out of.

  11. Greg C

This was posted on WasWatching.com yesterday

    http://www.waswatching.com/archives/2007/12/a-rod_trained_w.html

Do you guys think Canseco’s comments might have been because he may actually know something about ARod? When was the last time Canseco mentioned a player who didn’t turn out to be using PEDs?

  12. RosterRooster

I thought he seemed a little too angry about the whole thing….

  13. Fernando Alejandro

Yeah, I heard about Canseco’s second book, and its supposed comments about A-Rod a while ago. But I agree, if he had anything he would have said it in his first book. Further more, when did he ever play with A-Rod? The answer is never. Canseco is an idiot.

  14. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

I didn’t even remember the dude’s name. He will be forever remembered by me as the idiot who droped a popup by the opposing player yelling HA!! I guess the ss always yells HAHAHA when he gets the ball. Maybe he is laughing at him cause he knows he can’t get to it.

  15. Ed - Brooklyn NY

wow, Canseco is really hating on A-Rod!

  16. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

    Jose is just jealous.

  17. hmmm

it IS a little funny how outraged the Blue Jays were over the “sanctity of the game” when A-Rod yelled “Ha!” at a PED user.

Michael Kay might call that “ironic”.

  18. Fernando Alejandro

I have a feeling this Canseco thing could get ugly. We’ll see though. No one thinks of him as a credible source. Quite the shocker that he waited for the Mitchell report to bring this up.

  19. Greg C

Canseco and ARod supposedly worked out together in 1998 in Miami.

  20. Dave

If arod was using roids at some point, every one would know by now. Are you kidding me Canseco? Arod attracts every bit of media he could possibly muster. There is no way alex could do roids at any point in his career and get away with it. He was caught with a girl on a road trip and the next day it was in atleast ten papers. And the media, the mitchell report and Jose’s first book wouldnt say a word about arod using steroids if he has? I dont think so but nice try Canseco. I cant believe I actually used to like that guy.

And there are two Daves posting now by the way.

  21. Dave

The biggest joke was that sosa’s name was left off the report - are u kidding me? This report was a crock of $#%^

  22. Fernando Alejandro

“Canseco and ARod supposedly worked out together in 1998 in Miami.”

Says some guy who claims to have gotten batting instruction from Jose Canseco’s brother. Besides, them working out together means nothing. Canseco is still a major moron, and I am convinced that he’d drag anyone down for his own monetary gain. What’s next? That he injected Jeter with a needle in the short half a season they spent together in 2000? We’ll have to wait until book three for that one I guess.

  23. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

Dave the entire report was a joke. One of the biggest wastes of 50 million dollars.

  24. bphill

I thought it was MacDonald who dropped the ball.

  25. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

On to more important things, when is the election for the hall?

  26. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

And does anyone else love that Steve Phillips is doing spots on espn on this. Does he forget his was a gm when this crap was going on as well?

  27. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

And does anyone else find in interesting that this clubby worked for the Mets while he was gm. HMMMM

  28. "Boston George" Left Him Off The List

If ESPN (aka NESN South) was still doing those Mock-GM “specials”, Steve Phillips would find a way to ruin a mock team. What an idiot.

  29. CaptainsCorner

What a joke this whole thing was…Why didn’t Mitchell try interviewing anyone not in the NY area??!! Chicago..Sosa, California..Boston..Ortiz. The report was alot of Yanks, no one in Boston, a ton of nobody players and I am sure alot of players who woke up today expecting to be on there and surprised that they weren’t.

  30. whoa

And does anyone else love that Steve Phillips is doing spots on espn on this. Does he forget his was a gm when this crap was going on as well?

If Yankee envy was a terminal disease, Phillips would be dead.

  31. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

The sad thing is, people are buying into this report.

  32. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

Where the hell is everyone tonight? Who cares about cleaning the driveway or sidewalks.

  33. Yanksrule57

Garciaparra is a classic example of a user. Whe he stopped his body started falling apart. He went from being a 30 HR guy to someone who can’t hit 10. He is what 34? He should still be thumping the ball. Why was he not investigated?

BTW those who say McGuire is not in the report are wrong. They go into detail about Canseco mentioning him and the hoo-ha over the press seeing andro in his locker in 1998. McGuire saw the investigation for what it was and refused to talk to them. Can’t say as I blame him. He is retired and didn’t need to…..unless he wants to get in the hall and thinks he can rehab his image. But I don’t think he really cares.

  34. "Boston George" Left Him Off The List

“The sad thing is, people are buying into this report.”

Exactly. It’s one Red Sox Employee’s view of the steriods in baseball.

My opinion is just as valid as Boston George Mitchell’s. Whenever I get the chance, I intend to tell everyone how phony this report is.

Click my link. The contents on my “site” are just as valid and unbiased as George’s.

  35. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX")

    I’m fighting a fever :(

  36. Mike R.

    Ha!!!!!!!!

  37. CaptainsCorner

I am glad that now people know not to even think to mention Gagne’s name with Rivera. When he won the CY Young people were saying he was better then him and how great he was. Well according to the report he was taking stuff from 99-04, and won the CY in 03. Wonder why he has been falling apart.

  38. Dr. Phil

Before anybody buys another book by Canseco, they’ll buy a copy of “The Life and Times of Ike Turner”.

  39. Fernando Alejandro

“Before anybody buys another book by Canseco, they’ll buy a copy of ‘The Life and Times of Ike Turner’.”

That is a fantastic book by the way.

  40. Yanksrule57

Piazza and Nomar both had unusual or uncommon injuries. I’ve been an amateur athlete my whole life and spent a lot of time in gyms and rehab centers I”ve also had the opportunity to talk to many pros and never seen one guy let alone two tear there groin muscle off the bone in what were really benign situations as happened with them.

  41. DLev

One of the really bad things about this whole mess is that it tarnishes everyone. A-Rod probably is clean, but in the back of my mind is always going to be that tiny bit of doubt.

  42. Bob

The sad thing is while most baseball fans realize this thing was a joke, all the casual baseball fans and people who really aren’t fans will now forever associate Clemens, Pettitte, etc. with being cheaters based on all the sensationalized headlines coming out of this.

Way to go Bud. There was no need to put any names in this thing unless you had substantial proof against EVERYONE who had cheated.

    A shame.

  43. Jimmy

    “Boston George”,

I’m glad someone finally is realizing this. It’s so annoying how there was only ONE question asked to them all day regarding Mitchell’s part in the Red Sox. He was paid by them as a Director before leading this investigation, and was going to be employed and paid by them again once it’s over. They could’ve selected anyone else in the majors to head this investigation, and it would’ve come out a little more unbiased. But the fact that they chose a Red Sox is pathetic, because their closest, and most hated rival… is guess who?? The team who took the biggest hit today.

What a surprise it was when the “report” came out… NOT!

  44. Jimmy

By the way, I happen to love your picture. :)

  45. Fernando Alejandro

Jimmy I agree. This report implicated 16 former and current Yankee players. Clemens and Pettitte were two of note. Meanwhile the Red Sox have no current players, and few of note.

  46. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

I had the radio on for a few minutes, in that time two idiots called up asking how do I tell my kids that are huge Yankee fans that Roger and Andy are both cheaters.

Um why don’t you explain to them while they were accused, in this country you are innocent until proven guilty and this entire report is based on 2 people!! explain that to them!

  47. Phil

So Canseco brings this up on a day when ARod, who hasn’t totally messed up his career by age 32, signs a 2nd record breaking contract? Why might this rankle a hasbeen like Jose? Could there be any cause and effect between ARod’s new deal, MLB throwing Canseco out of the news conference and Canseco’s attack on both ARod and MLB for somehow “missing” ARod in the report they published today?

  48. MarkK

    Pete…

Canseco has said he had another book — it was due last September — which had stuff on A-Rod [link].

  49. dadofjft

He may be a jerk and have his own non-altruistic reasons for spilling the beans, but Jose has been the most truthful public figure on this subject for the past three years.

  50. Paul9

Didn’t Jose talk to Mitchell about what he knew? And if he did he would have said stuff about Arod

  51. Mike from Md

Conseco was also on Larry King complaining that the report claimed that he had given Clemens steroids. Former Sen. Mitchell called back in to say that the report makes no such claim, but only says Conseco discussed steroids with Clemens.
Is there anyone Conseco did not discuse steroids with?

  52. pat

In yet another unanswered question from the Mitchell Report, Canseco was never interviewed. Guess Sen. Mitchell might have thought him to be less than a reliable informant and the opportunist that he appears to be.

I agree with those who said that if Canseco had anything on A-Rod it would have been in the first book. He had no guarantee of a second one tha he was saving the good stuff for.

  53. Kill-Schill(ing)

Hmmn, Jose Canseco almost makes me long for the days when Arnold Rothstein could police the game.

In a perfect world, someone would introduce Jose to one of Rothstein’s henchman.

  54. randyhater

Say what you want about that pompous windbag Mitchell and his mockery of an investigation, Andy’s hiding behind his agents and needing to “consult” with the MLBPA speaks volumes.

You think if McNamee (a guy who spent hundreds and hundreds of hours with Pettitte and slept in his house on a number of occasions) had accused him of molesting a child, or made some other false accusation, he’d need to consult with the Players Association before responding? Not f’ing likely.

Andy (not his agents) needs to step forward and answer the allegations. And for the love of Christ, no half-assed Giambi-esque, kind of, sorta, almost apology, either.

  55. Don Capone

Everyone thought Canseco was crazy when his book first came out. I believed it then, because all you had to do was look around at these guys as big as silverback gorillas popping dingers left and right. Whoever didn’t believe it just had their head in the sand. Canseco’s a smarmy guy, but he didn’t HAVE to make anything up.

  56. Harsha

Wasn’t HGH not banned by mlb until 2003 or 2004? in which case, yes pettitte used it, and yes it was a PED, but he can always just say he took it knowing it wasnt banned…

  57. YankeesLuv

Seriously could Jose Canseco be a bigger loser? If he had anything on Arod he would have put it in the first book. He probaly ran out of money again. If he keeps talking about Arod to get attention, Arod should sue.

  58. Yankee13Fan

The report is such a joke - all it amounts to is a bunch of finger pointing, whispers, and rumors. Mitchell should be ashamed to publish this as if it is a real investigation. What ever happened to the burden of proof? I’m not saying everyone on the list is clean, but I doubt everyone on the list is dirty. But now they’ll all go down next to Bonds in the books.

By the way, Steve Phillips is the greatest %#@ in baseball. Oh wait, he’s not actually in baseball anymore, is he?
