The Mitchell rumors, they be flying

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Dec 13, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

At last count, 22 people have forwarded me the list of players supposedly on the Mitchell Reports that is going around the interweb.

While I appreciate the interest, it would be irresponsible of me to post a list of names that is floatintg around there. The report will drop in 90 minutes and we’ll know then.

Most of the names seem to be players who have been tied to PEDs one way or another over the years. If the Mitchell Report is a fancy version of what somebody could have done with Google, it will be a sham.

Please, Senator, tell us that 20 months of work didn’t hinge on the testimony of a former Mets clubbie who was trying to reduce his jail time.

Mitchell should have never allowed his integrity to come into question in the first place. If he is so honorable why doesnt he go into a hotel with a hooker and some cocaine? Then he can come out and say “I would never risk my reputation just to have sex with a hooker and do some blow.” Just because it is illogical that someone would risk their reputation does not make it impossible.

  2. Mike R. December 13th, 2007 at 12:40 pm

I hope this results in a player suing Mitchell or MLB or both.

  3. mel December 13th, 2007 at 12:41 pm

Steve, but, but, he brokered peace in Northern Ireland!

  4. Steve December 13th, 2007 at 12:42 pm

LOL Thank you mel. At least somebody sees my point of view.

  5. William December 13th, 2007 at 12:44 pm

PLEASE EMAIL ME THE RUMORED LIST AT WJHORSTMANN@GMAIL.COM I HAVE NO ROOM FOR PATIENCE!

  6. Ice Age December 13th, 2007 at 12:45 pm

I saw the “list” and no big 200 percent boost in homers papi. What. A. Dis. Grace.

  7. Mike R. December 13th, 2007 at 12:45 pm

It’s an excellent point Steve. I agree 100%. People have thrown away much more for much less.

  8. Ice Age December 13th, 2007 at 12:46 pm

There is one Cardinals player that made me gasp, no other name did, but his name just made me go… oh no… (hand up to forehead)

  9. helno51 December 13th, 2007 at 12:46 pm

I saw a list earlier on cnbc.omc but they have since pulled it down. i saw 4 yanks on the list. no mets of any sifnificance

  10. Ralph December 13th, 2007 at 12:47 pm

I don’t get it. Even if the report and the investigation are flawed, how can there be fines and/or suspensions for using something that wasn’t banned at the time?

  11. helno51 December 13th, 2007 at 12:47 pm

really 5 yankees if you consider one great moment in team history

  12. YankeesLuv December 13th, 2007 at 12:48 pm

Please Pete, post the official list as soon as possible.

  13. Steve December 13th, 2007 at 12:49 pm

    Mike R

Exactly and more to my point, Mitchell has been flaunting his conflict of interest. If he wanted everyone to give him the benefit of the doubt, he should never have shown up at a Red Sox game using tickets given to him by the team asking for autographs from Red Sox players. He invited this criticism on himself.

Here is a link to the list at Deadspin.

  18. stuart December 13th, 2007 at 12:54 pm

Varitek and Pujols are on it.. The capt. Jason, what is up with that reduced production el capitan???????

  19. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! December 13th, 2007 at 12:55 pm

    NYC has nothing on us

It’s been snowing since I woke up, and it’s so white you can’t tell the road from the sidewalk or grass.

And I’m supposed to drive home tomorrow!

Generally, though, it helps to plow the @$#@$ street!

  20. leaked list December 13th, 2007 at 12:56 pm

For what it’s worth, look back into Mitchell’s biography. He was a trial attorney in the Department of Justice, a U.S. Attorney (chief federal prosecutor) for Maine, and a federal district court judge. These are extremely prestigious positions that require impartiality and respect for due process. It is very rare and distinguished to have served in all of these positions. If any resume deserves some benefit of the doubt in terms of handling conflicts, his resume does.

  21. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX") December 13th, 2007 at 12:56 pm

the list being floated around has been refuted by MLB so don’t go 100 % by that rumored list

  22. gayle December 13th, 2007 at 12:57 pm

if this is in fact the list I would imagine that the Yankees mentioned with the exception of Clemens, Pettite and Heredia (gosh it is hard just to type his name as it was to watch him) all happened BEFORE they were Yankees ie Damon and Farnsworth as wouldnt they have tested positive as the new policy has been in effect since they have become Yankees??

  23. Ava December 13th, 2007 at 12:58 pm

jennifer- yeah, it’s really rough out there. I was in heels. Not fun.

Anyway, regarding the list, I wasn’t surprised by many of the alleged names other than Pujols. That’s unfortunate if it’s true.

  24. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge December 13th, 2007 at 12:59 pm

Ava I have heels for the office, and wellies for outside. :)

  25. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! December 13th, 2007 at 1:00 pm

Again, NYC has nothing on Syracuse.

  26. rb15 December 13th, 2007 at 1:00 pm

Pete, nice A Few Good Men reference.

Here in Boston it’s been snowing for about an hour. And I’m also wearing heels. Aii.

  27. MarkK December 13th, 2007 at 1:01 pm

    Mel…

George Mitchell’s attempt to broker peace in Northern Ireland failed miserably, and he admitted it [link].

  28. rb15 December 13th, 2007 at 1:01 pm

When the report comes out, Pete, you should say something like “Truth? You want the truth? Can we handle the truth?”

  29. defense matters December 13th, 2007 at 1:02 pm

  31. Ava December 13th, 2007 at 1:03 pm

    Very, very good thinking Jennifer.

Is anyone watching this Sportscenter special? I’m debating whether or not it’s worth it, seeing as right now it’s just a bunch of speculation.

  32. CB December 13th, 2007 at 1:04 pm

“wouldnt they have tested positive as the new policy has been in effect since they have become Yankees?”

Not necessarily. The testing policy baseball has put into place is a joke.

It is much, much less rigorous than the one in the olympics for example.

It also doesn’t test for as many substances as other programs do.

And a major problem for all sports – there is currently no good test for detecting human growth hormone. They could easily have used HGH and it would not be possible to detect it by any kind of test.

If you hold up a positive test as the only legitimate evidence then no one who used human growth hormone could be identified.

  33. Ban Bud December 13th, 2007 at 1:04 pm

“If any resume deserves some benefit of the doubt in terms of handling conflicts, his resume does.”

You left out the part of the resume that says, “Paid stooge for Red Sox”. I’m sure it’s on there somewhere. Look again.

  34. rbizzler December 13th, 2007 at 1:05 pm

It will be interesting to see how the leaked list matches up with the Mitchell Report. I suspect that it will corroborate pretty well. There are some pretty reputable nontraditional news sources with it, as well as some not so reputable.

All of those names aren’t too out of the realm of possibilities and there are no blatant guesses involved, so I am thinking there is a good chance that it is legit. Makes for some interesting emails with my Red Sox fan friends though (We are soooo disappointed in Tek….blah, blah, blah)

Gotta love someone sticking it to Andy and the Yankees by reading his bit to ESPN. You know they loved that hook up. Yankee-hating is indeed good for business.

i’m not glad i bought a new snow shovel though. i have a cold and can’t use the “don’t have a snowshovel” as an excuse…

  43. Mr Uh Oh December 13th, 2007 at 1:08 pm

I’m glad clemens name came up on the report..

all i can think about is him mowing down the twins and getting win 350.. i was very excited for him and the yanks..

but now, i view clemens as an absolute joke.
    as for pettite.. its pathetic..

“Felix Heredia used PED’s? Wow they didnt do a damn thing for him.”

Because PED’s do not make you a better baseball player. If they did you would see 800 names on the list.

  47. S.o.S.27 December 13th, 2007 at 1:12 pm

    Knoblock?

I knew there was a reason why he couldnt find first base on his throws anymore.

he already tested positive and was suspended, while on the Mets.

  51. GreenBeret7 December 13th, 2007 at 1:16 pm

I realize that wasn’t a very Yankee thing to do, to ya’ll. It was something like a Red Sox fan would do. I just won’t mention it again. I’ll go say 3 Hail Marys in Yiddish for punishment.

  52. ItalianGreco December 13th, 2007 at 1:16 pm

I don’t know what you people are talking about. PEDs did help Felix Heredia. He threw the ball straight down the middle.

  53. raymagnetic (SANTANA IS LEGEND) December 13th, 2007 at 1:16 pm

I have a question, is basketball the only major sport where the athletes do not use performance enhancers? Has there ever been an NBA player that tested positive for anything other than marijuana?

  57. GreenBeret7 December 13th, 2007 at 1:19 pm

  65. Mike R. December 13th, 2007 at 1:22 pm

GB7 – Leyritz said in an interview today that he never used because he is a high risk for prostate cancer and that increases your probablities of developing it.

Take it for what it’s worth.

  66. james December 13th, 2007 at 1:22 pm

George Mitchell can be trusted both Mike and Chris agree, how can anyone argue then. Clemens should have gone back to Boston, his name would be no where near the
    Mitchell Report/toilet paper

  67. mel December 13th, 2007 at 1:23 pm

    the todd,

It’s karma. New York fans were positively giddy when the Patriots got busted for Spygate, even though it turns out that the Jets did it, too. Everyone questioned the Patriots Superbowl wins.

Won’t feel so good if it happens to the Yankees and people question the dynasty of the late ’90′s.

Seven-time Cy Young winner Roger Clemens, plus Andy Pettitte, who just re-signed with the Yankees, are in the steroids reports, SI.com has confirmed, as are ex-Yankees Mike Stanton, Chuck Knoblauch and Jason Grimsley.

Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts also is in the report, as is Yankees and Braves postseason hero David Justice.

  77. Cumberberg December 13th, 2007 at 1:26 pm

i think this whole thing is a farce and what mitchell is doing to be completely irresponsible.

i’m sure that any names in the text are completely caveated (i.e., the guy who fed us this total heresay about your favorite player juicing is a total loser who got his jail sentence reduced), but it doesn’t matter, because once you put someone’s name in a “official” report like this, it becomes gospel in the eyes of much of the press and the public. what kind of fair hearing is that?

  78. LOL December 13th, 2007 at 1:27 pm

The Mitchell report does NOT simply hinge on the testimony of an ex-Mets clubhouse employee. There are electronic and paper trails to back it up. Further, all players were invited in to explain away this evidence that the investigators had. None would do so.

Further, Clemens and Pettitte, two of the biggest fish caught in this investigation, were turned in by their own trainer.

No natter how much some try to belittle the evidence in this report, it is admissable in a court of law. And if any player feels Radomski or Clemens’ trainer lied, then sue them. They won’t dare.

  79. Bill from NJ December 13th, 2007 at 1:27 pm

SI.com has confirmed that Miguel Tejada, Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte are named in the Mitchell Report.

SI.com also says Brian Roberts is there, as are former Yankees Mike Stanton, Jason Grimsley and Chuck Knoblauch. Apparently, steroids don’t help you throw to first base.

    HAHAHA – I love rotoworld.

They’re not going to suspend people for things that happened years ago. I don’t think they can. And what proof do they have? If they don’t have positive test results in their possession, it’s all hearsay.

  93. gargoyle December 13th, 2007 at 1:31 pm

That’s the right way though, right now there is nothing to that list and Pete and others would be lowering themselves by posting it. However, I feel like they wouldn’t completely make up a list of players that are very believeable to be on the list just for the sake of having it. 23 minutes and counting

  107. Jack H. December 13th, 2007 at 1:37 pm

I guess the giant, obnoxious “C” on Varitek’s jersey stands for cheater.

  108. Dave December 13th, 2007 at 1:37 pm

halfz – Im not saying rasner is great but he does have pretty good numbers in the majors and he has pretty solid control unlike the majority of our current bullpen. I just think the pen is going to have so many flaws this yr, we really need all the help we can get. And rasner would add to the diversity of a pen that is full of hard-throwing righties with no control. Additionally, i think the hawkins acquisition isnt enough and if that deal does help, it certainly doesnt make a significant impact on the bullpen next yr. A compilation of mediocre players, decent players and those with high cielings of ramirez, veras, ohlendorf, britton, hawkins, farnsoworth, henn, whright, Igawa, karstens, bruney, albedejo and the late editions of horne, melancon, cox and sanchez possibly does not mean the bullpen will be solid next yr. I dont think one can just accumulate a massive amount of righties and horrible lefty relief arms and past starters and expect to have a number of them rise up out of the garbage and give us effective relief. More likely it will be similar to the pen before joba where we will struggle to find a decent arm that can get us through an inning every single game. I hope i am wrong but i feel a trade must be made in which we acquire someone who can act as our eighth inning guy and the rock of our pen like joba last yr and gordon of old and what farnsworthless was signed on to do but failed miserably.

And whats with everyone saying the yanks will be hit hard by the mitchell report – could that possibly be because a redsox employee ran the investigation or is that crazy talk. And i really cant think of anyone besides giambi and possibly pettitte who are currently on our 40 man roster and have ever even been linked to steroids in the past.

  109. GreenBeret7 December 13th, 2007 at 1:37 pm

It all depends on when it happened and whether it was drugs, steroids or HGH.

  110. Tek is a Phony December 13th, 2007 at 1:37 pm

bphill, Mitchell is not a sox fan, he is an employee of the team!

look at redsox.com – George Mitchell is listed as a “team officer”, right below Larry Lucchino’s name!!!

    GB
    ahh i get it..
well good.. then pettite shouldnt be suspended..

    ill keep hoping so

  112. Stacey December 13th, 2007 at 1:38 pm

“Is anybody watching ESPN? They are just burying Clemens and Pettitte. They even put a video from ESPN’s visit to Clemens’ house in 2002 with Clemens and Pettitte working out with their trainer.”

That’s shocking. Not. If one of their beloved Red Sox players were implicated there would be purple and black bunting on the news desks at ESPN. I hate them so much.

  113. mel December 13th, 2007 at 1:38 pm

Mitchell would take offense to being called a Red Sox fan.

Once again he’s a director of the Red Sox.

  114. Steve December 13th, 2007 at 1:38 pm

Yeah I am watching ESPN too. They are making Pettitte and Roger look terrible. You would think this report is called the Roger and Andy Report the way ESPN makes it out to be.

  115. E-ROC December 13th, 2007 at 1:38 pm

Baseball puts too much emphasis on the records and legacy, instead of the actually game.

  116. Stephen December 13th, 2007 at 1:39 pm

    Mel,

What?! I love Pettitte too, but if he’s a cheat, then he’s a cheat. You can’t blame McNamee for Pettitte’s transgressions.

  117. Vader December 13th, 2007 at 1:39 pm

Chris “crazy puppy” Russo, may be one of the biggest idiots I’ve ever listened to in my life.

  118. CaptainsCorner December 13th, 2007 at 1:40 pm

Did Mitchell purposely forget to include his friend Ortiz on the list?

  119. migames December 13th, 2007 at 1:41 pm

i wonder how the relationship of Clemens and Pettitte will now be viewed. Before today it was viewed in such a positive light, i think, the tide has turned on that.

  120. Stacey December 13th, 2007 at 1:41 pm

“Chris “crazy puppy” Russo, may be one of the biggest idiots I’ve ever listened to in my life.”

    You’re just realizing this…

  121. Jax December 13th, 2007 at 1:41 pm

The official list going to be release 1:45pm per Mike n’ Maddog.

  122. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! December 13th, 2007 at 1:41 pm

    Steve Phillips makes me naseous.

“Chris “crazy puppy” Russo, may be one of the biggest idiots I’ve ever listened to in my life.”

    You’re just realizing this now?

  124. Vader December 13th, 2007 at 1:42 pm

Am I the only person that really doesn’t care who is on this list. My life isn’t going stop once this report is released.

  125. mel December 13th, 2007 at 1:43 pm

    Stephen,

Whatever. I think in this day and age, it’s cool to see that Anderson was willing to sit in jail for Barry Bonds.

Of course cheating is wrong. But there is no honor anymore. Everyone is a rat. Silly POV? Yeah, but I’m such a romantic.

  126. E-ROC December 13th, 2007 at 1:44 pm

Vader–I agree with you. I don’t care who is on the list.

  127. Jax December 13th, 2007 at 1:44 pm

    One more minute….

  128. GreenBeret7 December 13th, 2007 at 1:44 pm

Wonder how many public apologies will be coming out in the next few weeks, and how many flat out denials?

  129. mel December 13th, 2007 at 1:45 pm

    migames,

You’re kidding, right? I love Pettitte, but that relationship has been weird. For years.

  130. GreenBeret7 December 13th, 2007 at 1:46 pm

I’m sure Greg Anderson has an overseas bank account that’s been getting monthly deposits. He’s not doing this because he’s a nice guy.

  131. mel December 13th, 2007 at 1:46 pm

Canseco’s in the house. There for his hero’s welcome as the catalyst for the whole investigation. Gag.

  132. migames December 13th, 2007 at 1:47 pm

but that relationship has been weird. For years.

    hhahahaha

    i guess

  133. Jimmy December 13th, 2007 at 1:47 pm

What’s pathetic is no one will actually mention that Mitchell is employed be the Red Sox. Selig is a pathetic loser, and anyone who actually believes some of the names that will be on the list are retarded.

  134. mel December 13th, 2007 at 1:47 pm

    GB7,

    Like I said, I’m a romantic. :)

  135. Paulie December 13th, 2007 at 1:51 pm

Amazing how many former San Francisco Giants are expected to be on this list. One thing is for sure, taking steroids doesn’t help you win ball games.

  136. Doreen December 13th, 2007 at 1:52 pm

The video on ESPN showed two guys doing a very intense workout. It did not show them taking steroids.

I think it’s awful that the only two names splashed on the screen are Clemens & Pettitte, though I do reaize Clemens is a big fish.

I’m really having more trouble with this than I thought I would. I want just one of these people to answer, Why?

  137. GreenBeret7 December 13th, 2007 at 1:57 pm

From mlb.com, 39 of the 70 names that’s floating around are wrong.

  138. Jax December 13th, 2007 at 1:58 pm

Ha LoDuca is on the list.

  139. Paulie December 13th, 2007 at 1:59 pm

    Has it started?

  140. GreenBeret7 December 13th, 2007 at 1:59 pm

I find it hard to believe that so much of the information coming from the Mets clubbie and only 2-3 Mets are on the lists.

  141. Drew41 December 13th, 2007 at 2:14 pm

Doreen — Why would either Clemens or Pettitte or anyone else for that matter use steroids? That’s simple. They work.

  142. BA December 13th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

After downloading and reading the report it seems to me that (1) these guys were stupid for not knowing to use cash instead of checks, and (2) that it is very likely that steroid use has been running rampant in MLB for years. If basically a couple guys ratted out this many players than it is very likely that many many many more have also used the drugs and just did it more discreetly. I believe that this report uncovers just the tip of the iceberg and that there is still a huge amount hidden below the surface that we may never know about.
