He’s back. Howard Rubenstein had disappeared from Yankeeland in the wake of Hank Steinbrenner becoming the team spokesman/general manager.
But with the Mitchell Report out and team execs ducking for cover, Rubenstein is back with a statement on behalf of the team. Here it is:
“We are reviewing the report and have no comment.â€

Some of those players listed were Joe Torre’s boys. Maybe you should Joe T. to get his thoughts on Roger and Andy being listed as HGH users.
Thanks Howard now go back to the office and wait til George decides to speak again.Obviously Hank doesnt need you.
Keep in mind Pettitte only did this for a brief time in 2002. It was not a common thing. Also, their is NO evidence of eityher actually doing it other than the word of a criminal, Radomski.
The Return of a Legend
I wonder what the sux are saying about him…..
“Lets give him a raise because he did not drop the dime on our boys”
“Joe Torre’s boys”
yes, lets throw Joe under the bus to.
Was Damon on the list?
You would have thought the hit would have been much bigger. With the exception of Pettitte and Clemens, our biggest stars are unscathed.
Boston got off easy, too easy.
The best thing for the Yankees to do is to never make a comment on this report.
When asked for a comment they should say, “We have no comment at this time. Please seek out the other 29 teams listed in the report.”
Congratulations to the 2000 World Champions New York Cheaters******* Igues we know why Clemens threw the bat at Piazza.. ROID RAGE !!!!!!! No Hall of Fame for Roger
Glenallen Hill, David Justice, Chuck Knoblauch, Denny Neagle, Jose Canseco….these guys all were part of the World Series Champion 2000 Yankees.
good to see Gagne finally exposed too.
Damon was not in the report.
When did that fraud Gagne use it. during his streak or lately when he been trying to rehab his arm
When trolling please try to at least write proper English.
Is a viking the same thing as a troll???
i only mention those guys affiliation with the 2000 team b/c I don’t think Pete knows of it….since he didnt mention them.
I see a huge internal inconsistency with Mitchell’s report. One the one hand, he acknowledges that he was only able to identify a fraction of the players who were involved with PEDs (in large part because his star witnesses happened to be associated with NY teams). On the other hand, he says it would be a mistake to keep digging until the names of ALL players involved with PEDs were known. In other words, it’s important that the names that happened to come out today (which are probably 70% Yankee-related) should be revealed, but anyone Mitchell failed to turn up should be left alone. What kind of nonsense is that?
Mitchell had 2 sources a yankee trainer and the met guy that is why more players from there teams are on the list..
if there counterparts on the other major league teams spoke there would be more players from there teams.. I thought the list would be much more widespread and more names….very few suprises on the list….
yeah glen allen hill, canseco, and denny neagle were integral to the yanks titles.. and matt cassell has been a integral part of the patriots championships!!!!!!!
my comment is as stupid as the troll comments….....
mitchell had only 2 sources what a joke….2 ny guys….
PETTITTE IS JUST ANOTHER ROID RAGER
Thanks SJ
Just from some of what I`ve heard their doesn’t seem to be much evidence to back these things up.
Brandon Donnelly was named because he was called “a juice guy” in an E-Mail by a Boston executive.
Pettitte’s use is being exxagerated. He asked Radomski (or MCNamee not sure which) about HGH once and never again
IM SO MAD CAUSE I ALWAYS SUPPORT PETTITTE BUT I KNOW THE TRUTH! HES JUST ANOTHER ROID RAGER LIKE HIS BUDDY ROGER “ROCKET SYRINGE” CLEMENS
all in all this is just another controversy d’jour. Andy used HGH once to rehab his elbow during a season the Yanks got bounced in the first round….yyyyyyyaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwnnn.
When do pitchers and catchers report.
Will all the Boston Idiots please come out and play ? Oh, too late, they are already out in FULL FORCE !
Mike
Happy spin is one thing but…..
McNamee said he injected Pettitte 2 or 4 times personally. That’s a little more than asking.
This report is a huge disappointment. Shocking that it was largely based on the word of a New York club house attendant. Also shocking that of the Red Sox players named there’s Mo Vaughn, someone who was widely disliked in his time with Boston, Eric Gagne (half a season) and Brendan Donnelly who was surprisingly non-tendered by Boston yesterday. There may be no bias, but its clear where the central focus was.
Ha, I just realized that Sen. Mitchell spoke at my college commencement. I get the feeling that in a few years no one will remember today’s speech, either.
ortiz is being protected by mitchell. everyone knows he took roids!
I am finding it just a bit curious that although Radomski worked for the Mets, or in the Mets clubhouse, the names associated with him have Yankees ties.
baseball expert, did you even read his section of the report? He took HGH like 2-4 times while on the DL once, and before it was banned. I genuinely feel bad for Andy, the media is going to drag him through the mud over this. What a farce.
This is not a Yankees Red Sox issue. It came out that a majority of Yankees were on the list. It is what it is, people need to accept that.
do everyone here hate roger clemens now?
OK. I just picked myself off the floor. Steve Phillips was spot on in his analysis of how GM’s will approach tainted players.
baseball expert,
I say this as kindly as I can, please do everyone here a favor. Why don’t you just take a long walk on a short pier, okay?
No, I don’t hate Roger Clemens. I don’t even care, he’s not on the team anymore.
Still love Andy.
As a yankee fan I never loved roger Clemens or what came with him but I loved when he did well.
I think you mean make like a tree and get out of here!
Truth hurts, Roger is a cheater, Andy is a cheater, I don’t want to hear any more crap about how Torre’s guys are of such great charecter. Knobloch is a cheater. The Dynasty of the late 1990’s is FOREVER TARNISHED. How is that for proper english you fan of a tarnished dynasty
http://tenstarmusic.com/images/VaritekCheater.jpg
raymagnetic- you want me to kill myself?
I just got home…fired up the blog… can someone please
point me to a compelte list of players named?
Just curious a co worker told me only one Sox player from either championship team was named… how can that be true??
I used to dream that Roger would wear a Yankees cap in the HOF. Now? Whatever. His bust should have a cap with a rocket on it.
That’s why the names are so damning…if you’re name is on the report you’re going to be dragged through the mud no matter what the circumstances. No matter how flimsy the evidence is. Guess you can’t expect much from a former U.S. Senator with a supposedly glowing track record. We’ve probably detained people at Guantanamo over less.
I’m only half joking. Man, my own bitterness surprises me.
The yankee dynasty is tarnished? , then I guess everything in baseball is tarnished over the last 15 years, because this report is not the final tell all source on steroids.
Please be advised that the Mitchell Report has been renamed. It shall now be referred to as “A Red Sox Christmas Present: The Anecdotal Report on Steroid Use by Present and Former Yankees and Other Bedtime Stories.”
There are basically three sources used by Mitchell: A former Yankee pitcher, a former Yankee assistant trainer and a Mets towel boy. This report is far from comprehensive and should not have been released in the manner it was. Mitchell screwed this up badly.
Hey Viking, the English was fine, but your grammar and punctuation still suck.
I can name sox players on roids- varitek, ortiz, schilling, nixon, kapler, foulke
Spokesman/General Manager? Very clear. Just give up this pointless crusade, Cashman is obviously still in charge. It’s tired and boring.
Spokesman/General Manager? Very clever. Just give up this pointless crusade, Cashman is obviously still in charge. It’s tired and boring.
Viking,
Whatever makes you feel better knowing the Red Sox will always be in the Yanks’ shadow.
A-Rod was the biggest story after Game 4 of the World Series.
Pathetic. The Yankees still run the baseball universe.
Gammons is all indignant on the behalf of Brian Roberts.
and Brendan Donnelly.
Roger Clemens: “C’mon Andy, bend over and take one for the the team”
Andy Pettite: “Ok Rocket but don’t tell Derek or Joe”
Roger Clemems: “Don’t worry, It’ll be our little secret kid”
26*
mel: Regardless of who you are a fan of, Brian Roberts—more than anyone—shouldn’t have been named. Roberts and Bigbie were roomies with Segui in 2001. Bigbie says that he and Segui used steroids but he never saw Roberts use. However, Bigbie said that in 2004 Roberts said that he used steroids “once or twice” in 2003.
That is all the evidence against Roberts. BS.
mel-
it’s way to early to make judgements on roger or any player. just the fact that yankee fans feel like they need to circle the wagons makes me very skeptical of the objectivity of this report.
the report looks like amateur hour .
It looks like a lot of Yankees, present & former mentioned. Clemens, Petit. Sheffield, Giambi, Velardi, Conseco and Knoblach. Why don’t you call Mike & dog or Micheal K. now. You never stopped complaining about Bonds while your house was tainted all the time.
And another thing: This report is practically a parody of an embarrassing conflict of interest situation. Mitchell was hired despite being a well known fan and part-owner (I believe) of the Red Sox. Given this, the absolute worst-case scenario in terms of the integrity of the investtigation was for the report to contain a heavy emphasis on current or former Yankees players. And – surprise, surprise, surprise!—that is EXACTLY the report we got.
Mitchell can talk all he wants about his success with the Northern Ireland peace talks, despite the alleged “conflict” of having some Irish blood in your lineage; but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have a genuine, disqualifying conflict of interest in the present case.
BTW, George, in a negotiation setting like the Northern Ireland talks, where participation is optional, the parties can each decide whether or not to overlook your conflict of interest. If they don’t like the way the negotiations are going, as a result of your “conflict” or for any other reason, they can simply walk away. However, the players you investigated obviously had no say in whether, as a Red Sox board member, you were the right guy to be heading up the investigation.
How stupid does this guy think we are?
Some fans like to deny, deny, deny, just realize that ALOT of players took steroids, whether mentioned in the report or not.
I’m not upset about the Yanks mentioned on the report. Pettitte, Giambi, Clemens, and Sheffield have all been brought up before. What I am upset about is how well centered around New York the report is. It makes me more upset that Mitchell is linked with the Red Sox.
I mean, the only people this guy can find to comment happen to be New York guys? This is garbage.
No, I agree that Roberts case was pure hearsay. It’s just funny. Gammons did say that only 1/3 of the anecdotal stuff is credible.
Again,I hope congress steps in and disciplines(suspensions or asked to resign) Selig and Fehr for this shady so called investigation. They should be the ones to blame for allowing this steroid era to run out of control.
Its time to clean up the game and it starts with those two jokers.
Guiseppe,
I could care less about the Red Sox. I am getting enjoyment out of the fact that all of you holier than thou Yankee Fans are trying to deflect this report. Clemens, Pettite, Giambi, Knolbloch, Stanton, Grimsley, Justice, Villone, Sheffield, GlenAllen Hill, Canseco. Guys this is not a report to protect the RedSox, stop whinning. Face facts you root for a team that has had a bunch of cheaters play for them. I hope Andy goes to confession.
This entire report is based on hearsay. It’s kind of awful.
I loved what Clemens did for us but I love Andy for Andy because he’s a homegrown start. I forgive him 100% for using the HGH, back when it was legal. He shouldn’t have done it and there are no excuses for doing it, even injury related unless a doctor is giving it to you. Pettitte is still The Man.
People make mistakes, you forgive them and move on. I can forgive Clemens but it’s really hard to swallow since it seemed like he was one of the hard working type and got his success from that.
Trust me, there are a lot more Yankees and Red Sox that bought/used PEDs, they just didn’t come up. They are the lucky ones.
I think Clay hit in on the head. This is not the tell-all or end point. It does drag some people’s names down but lacks evidence of substance.
The real issue as I see it for AP is that he continues to train with a guy who uses PEDs as part of the regime. Andy may never have done them again after the injury rehab. Or he may have continued to use many times. There is no answer in the report and none coming.
As far as the fact that all of the sources come from NY and thus it is largely ex-Yankees- who cares? If Sox want to use the fact that Kevin Brown (as a Dodger), Villone (as a Mariner), Knoblauch, Stanton, etc used steroids to make them believe that the Yanks of the early 2000s were cheaters, fine. That’s about as fair as saying that the Pats are cheaters now because harrison used HGH. Jeter, Brosius, O’ Neill, Bernie did not and were the heart of the team as Brady, Seymour, Moss, Samuel are the heart of the Pats.
Viking Coach:
You seem so excited for the chance to bash the Yankees and their fans…. typing with one hand are we??
What really is damning, to me, is that MLB teams hired these dirtbags as trainers, strength coaches, etc. Wherever they went, it seemed like the drugs followed. Awful.
So much for that early 2000s Orioles’ youth movement, eh?
Pettitte is still the man.
no sosa, no mcgwire, no dykstra, no brady anderson…did i leave anyone out…no credibility.
Let’s talk baseball, enough of this. There won’t be any penalties, fines or suspensions anyway.
The White Sox said they could listen to offers for first baseman Paul Konerko, who might bring the most value.
They are looking for an outfielder. How about Matsui for Konerko?
KB,
You mean to tell me that Andy still uses this trainer?
Some fans like to deny, deny, deny, just realize that ALOT of players took steroids, whether mentioned in the report or not.
I don’t think that fans are upset because they believe the report is false. It’s more a matter of lacking due process and the shadiness of Mitchell’s known Red Sox ties and convenient lack of any current Red Sox.
There actually has been some good commentary on ESPN, however, one large point has NOT been discussed. How New York-centric the report is… being that the majority of players named are Yankees and Mets… ok, and Orioles. It is amazing to me how unscathed the Red Sox (and anyone west of the Hudson River) are. Shouldn’t the inherent conflict of interest due to Mitchell’s ties to the Sox be mentioned?
For everybody that is stating this report is based on hearsay; I say this “get your heads out of the sand” . You poor Yankee fans are in denial. No it can’t be its a Redsox conspiracy, not my Andy, Maybe Andy pulled the hat down so far so we could’nt see how big his head beacame from the HGH. CHEATERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Center this report around one team, any team for any extended period of time, and you’ll find over a dozen names to throw on your report. I’m not mad that these Yankee players are on there, as I’ve said there’s been speculation around them before. It just so happens that this report is centered on the Yankees. Shocking that Mitchell would do this.
Viking Coach – It’s the fact the report is inconsistent and is essentially a witch hunt. Why is it that those select players in the Mitchell Report get names but the rest (and YES, there are a ton of other players not named today that used PEDs, EVEN IN YOUR FAVORITE CLUBHOUSE) get off?
It’s not about if it was wrong of them to use, it’s more about how the Mitchell Report is more of a “look at us Congress, we fixed it!” half-assed $20 million job based on 2 sources. If I were any MLB fan I would be upset for the shoddy work we get after 20 months of waiting.
Bud Selig = worst MLB commissioner ever.
Mel,
Both Clemens and Andy were quoted this past season as standing by this guy and continuing to rely on him. Its in the report and was in the NY papers sometime around May-June this summer.
Viking Coach
Which MLB team are you a fan of?
I believe what I think Schilling or Conseco said years back. 75% of players are on steroids of some form of PED.My problem with all this is all the time and riggorous investigation turned out to be nothing more than here say from 2 new york guys. The investigation was half a$$ed to say the least. You cant tell me there are isnt anyone on the Sox that didnt use it(Ortiz,Manny,Schill,Drew,Kapler,Ferritek, etc.) We should of all expected this the second Dumb(Selig) appointed Dumber(Mitchell sox employee)to do this investigation.
Mitchell seems proud of his accomplishments in Northern Ireland. He can now feel proud of his accomplishments in a college cowtown 200 miles north on I-95.
Who loves chowdah more, Mitchell or Gammons ?
HGH ≠Steroids
next up will be clueless bud with his long face…like he didnt know when they were raking in the bucks…kinda makes me feel for mcgwire, he was being used…now he’s the poster boy…must be really pissed now, couldn’t even make mitchells list
Randy 1
(1) Let me begin by stating that I’m of the opinion that Varitek, Nixon, Kapler, Nomar and Ortiz may well have used PEDs. I’m not accusing them, but I’d be less than stunned to hear that it was the case.
(2) It’s way too LATE to make judgments on Clemens. In his last (contract) year in Boston, he miraculously reversed a three-year decline. He continued to gain prodigious amounts of weight, weighing 50 more pounds than during his first 20 strikeout performance. He continued to pitch in a dominant fashion well into his 40s.
Some people are being tarred on dubious “evidence,” but not Clemens. With the exception of Bonds, he has been the MOST obvious abuser. His annual “retirements” have served to give him an eight month sabattical from the mandatory testing program. It’s all ridiculously obvious.
I’ll join with Yankee fans in defending those who have been tarnished by dubious factoids. But Yankee fans can save their own credibility by cutting Clemens loose. He duped you last year, trying to go to the Chemical Store in order to cash in on one more $20 million rodeo. Let him go.
Viking Coach: do you realize what hearsay is? cause that’s what this is.
“no sosa, no mcgwire, no dykstra, no brady anderson…did i leave anyone out…no credibility.”
dykstra was on a complete player list that I saw, I haven’t read the report though
Viking Coach:
A real balanced and reasonable position, especially since none of those guys ever played for any other teams – - all lifetime Yankees. And of course they never used PEDs before the Yankees (or after). Hint: Think before you write.
Mick – Dykstra’s in there.
My mistake- in 2006 when issues came up involving McNamee, Clemens and Pettitte both said they had long-standing relationships with him and continue to rely on him in their training. Hopefully they’ve parted ways since then, but I think that creates a stigma that might be harder to walk away from.
baseball expert, you add nothing to the conversation. Take the other poster’s advice: take a nice long walk off a short pier.

Really best thing a Red Sox fan has come in here and said. You can sit there and say there’s no hard PROOF, but they have an awful lot on Clemens in the report. All signs want to point to YES, but our heart gets in the way.
ok thanks, mitch 11…did i leave anyone else out? luis gonzales?
Willis,
Whatever it takes, This is not a biased “Pro Red Sox Report” Lets stay focused on the issue. This report at least accuses the players of using the drugs, if thye remain silnet and offer no denial of the report that will speak volumes. The Empier has started to crumble that fact cannot be denied. The RedSox are beating you on the field, and today your tem has key members of it accused of being CHEATERS. If you think this report is all hearsay you are a little too naieve for me.
Ummmmm…..
Yay A-Rod is back!
Let’s go get Prior!
bud…throw away the script and speak from the heart
what premeditated garbage…
would you buy a used car from this man?
Viking Coach
Why can’t you just tell me who your favorite MLB team is?
wow that dude can’t spell… is he 7 years old?
Hey All of you in Denial Yankee Fans,
HAPPY HOLIDAYS !!! I hope I get a size 9 Andy Pettite Yankee Hat under my Xmas tree this year. CHEATERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Clemens did it. Let’s get that out of the way. Pettitte did HGH (not steroids, please don’t get it confused) before it was a banned substance. I fault him, because it is a performance enhancing substance that gives an unfair advantage.
Now with that being said, I still think its garbage that the report is based around these two New York guys. Base it on a Mariners trainer, you’ll get a bunch of Mariners on your list. Base it on a Red Sox trainer, you’ll get a bunch of Red Sox players on your list. Mitchell bases it in New York, and got a bunch of New Yorkers on his list.
Look, the problem here is details. Pettite used 2-4 shots of HGH to rehab his elbow—before it was banned. Did he use it after that? Did he use anything else? If not, what’s the issue? At the time, no one even looked down on HGH. They used to sell that stuff on the radio! So if his use was nothing more than that, he should not have been mentioned in the report.
Clemens is another story. If he was using steroids regularly to boost his ability to compete, then yeah, as Dan Wetzel says, he’s as bad as Bonds and should be treated the same.
I thought the idea of this investigation was to detail the depth and breadth of abuse of performance enhancing drugs in MLB. Instead it appears to list a small sampling of the abusers right alongside the names of people who may have gotten effectively nothing more than a contact high. It’s fine to destroy the reputations that deserve destruction—though it would be better to be thorough about it. But it’s ridiculous to destroy—by association—the reputations of people who had almost nothing to do with something that wasn’t even illegal or prohibited by the sport in the first place. I’m sure several of the names fall into this second group.
Also, the fact that no major Red Sox players were implicated doesn’t concern me. What does concern me is that this supposedly thorough, rigorous investigation relied on so few sources, from a very limited geographic location, and leveled accusations with very little corroborating evidence. And I don’t want to hear about the canceled checks—unless they say “for performance enhancing drugs” in the memo.
What an irresponsible thing Mitchell and Selig have done. Why am I not surprised?
Listen to America’s favorite hoot, Bud Selig. Ever the pretty picture painter. He still thinks Humpty Dumpty was pushed.
He was such a poor speller in his Milwaukee youth that teachers made him stay after school and constantly write the word “integrity” on a chalkboard until he got it right.
did bud just say he didnt read the report…lol
Willis I am a Mets Fan, and Todd Hundley’s record for homeruns as a catcher should have an asterik next to it. He is a CHEATER. Clemens is amazing, he had to know that he would be named in the report, and he still basically stole ove 20 million from the Yankees. If you slow down the Suyzn Waldman tape you can hear her say ” Oh my Gawd, Roger is in George’s Bawx, with a syringe sticking out of his butt”
why does bud move his lips when he listens to reporters questions?
I would want a lot more for $20 million. In fact I probably could have written a better report for 5. He does this huge investigation and has to rely on two drug dealers for his story. For shame. For Shame. I am not defending anyone of those named but in a country that relies on due process, you cannot just take the words of a snitch without getting evidence. This report is a mockery of all we hold precious in this country. I still cannot get over the $20 million price tag for rumors and no evidence.
fernando,
well said…life goes on…baseball is in the moment…can’t wait for opening day!
bud is confessing…didnt want people to say “what were they hiding?”...poor excuse and waste of money
Born in da Bronx
If you had $20 million, would you spend it on:
(A) The Mitchell Report
(B) The 2007 Roger Clemens
Your answer will be your total grade for the class Waste of Money 101
Gone unnnoticed with all the Mitchell buffoonery is the Twins signing SS Adam Everett which paints Boston in a corner in thinking they could dangle prospect Jed Lowrie as part of a Santana package.
Tough break …
Dear Brian,
I would spend it on you so you could get a life instead of trolling a Yankee blog.
F that – I’d keep the $20 mil and move to Aruba.
Born in da Bronx ….. You can pass Waste of Money 101, but you flunk Interpersonal Relations 103/\.
Lighten up. Happy Holidays!
What a pent up bag of nothing. The Mitchell Report had as much teeth as the Lewis Libby fiasco.
George Mitchell arrived in snowbound Bahhstin just 15 minutes ago and is now having a bowel of chowdah with fellow Socks hoot Peter Gammons.
As a mets fan I’am just grateful for two things. One Mike Piazza wasnt on the list.Honestly that would be as crushing for us as it would for you to find out Bernie Williams was using. An second I am glad Paul Loduca is gone I could just see him pushing David wright or Reyes to use an that would be as bad as the gooden strawberry days.
p.s I know its impossible but if Selig ever decided to give the 2000 world series to us I wouldent exactly be against it. seeing as how you had this in the mitchell report…
“According to McNamee, during the middle of the 2000 season Clemens made it clear that he was ready to use steroids again. During the latter part of the regular season, McNamee injected Clemens in the buttocks four to six times with testosterone from a bottle labeled either Sustanon 250 or Deca-Durabolin that McNamee had obtained from Radomski.â€
2000 world series against mets:
1-0 8ip 2h 0r 0bb 9k’s
17 Yanks
Jason Giambi
Gary Sheffield
Randy Velarde
Hal Morris
Rondell White
Roger Clemens
Andy Pettitte
Chuck Knoblauch
Jason Grimsley
David Justice
Glenallen Hill
Denny Neagle
Ron Villone
Todd Williams
Kevin Brown
Jose Canseco
Darren Holmes
3 both for mets and yankees. I am not including Justice since he never played for us.
Josias Manzanillo
Todd Pratt
Mike Stanton
Only three where on the team last season Villone, Rawjah and Pettite.. not a good day to be a yankee fan. But thank the lord Mike Piazza is going into the hall of fame he will send Rawjah a post card on his induction day.
P.P.S Can Peter get any commentary from Susan Waldmen I would very much like to see her reaction right about now.
I hate seeing Pettitte and Clemens getting burned today as much as anybody. But I don’t think we should go overboard with Mitchell conflict of interest charges. He’s a former federal judge and has been involved with peace negotiations around the world.
His biggest mistake was that he should have permanently broken ties with the Red Sox as soon as he took on the investigation. Absent of that disassociation,he should have at least done more investigation about the Red Sox than any other team. When he didn’t even interview Canseco about his Red sox playing days, he left himself open to criticism.
Dear Brian,
bummer dude, I thought I had that one locked. Bronx personalities way different than those in genteel New England.
