Yankees to announce deal with A-Rod

December
13

The Yankees will hold a conference call with Alex Rodriguez in a few minutes to announce his contract.

This will be his first chance to explain exactly what happened a month ago when he and the Yankees went from burning bridges to a happy reunion.

The Mitchell Report drops at 2 p.m. and there are rumors that the Yankees won’t be pleased. Who beyond Jason Giambi will be named is a guess at this point.

If it is “several” Yankees, my guess is Clemens, Pettitte, Giambi, Farnsworth and Damon. I really hope its not A-rod.

  2. Roger Clemens

Apparently I am. Why are we announcing A-Rod’s signing hours before the report comes out, and not waiting to see if his name shows up?

  3. Evan

Clemens it seems will likely be named, which I don’t think will matter much, it might cost him a few HOF votes but he’ll still be a first ballot guy. I’ll be very interested to see whether Pettitte is named as well considering how close the two of them are. Somehow even if he’s named, I just can’t see Yankees fans turning their backs on him.

  4. KPH

Just speculation here, but the timing of this press conference (just 3 hours before the release of the Mitchell report) seems suspect. Do the Yanks expect A-Rod to be named, and thus, are rushing to get this conference in before the Report in order to avoid having to answer questions about it? Or questions about other players (e.g., Clemens)?

  5. migames

How dare arod upstage the mitchell report ;)

  6. RangerRob

Pettitte is not on the list. Arod will be on the list.

  7. Chris in MA

I think Clemens is a given. Would not be surprised if ARod and Pettitte are also on the list. No chance Mo or Jeter is on the list. The other give-me’s are Sheffield and Giambi.

  8. Pocono Chris

I think it has been said that Mo, Jeter and A-Rod are not on the list.

Clemens, Pettitte, Abreu, Damon, Posada and Farnsworth.

  9. Bob

Are you going to the Mitchell press conference Peter?

  10. RangerRob

What does it matter if Arod is on the list or not?

  11. kevin

The timing here seems suspect. Why have this conference just 3 hours before the Mitchell report? To avoid having to answer questions in case A-Rod is named?

  12. TelcoYank

I saw a report that Clemens will be named….hmmm when looking at older picture he did seem to get bigger…jeez I hope its not true…

  13. mko

Can you please post the conference call audio? Thanks :-)

  14. Steve

I refuse to take this report serious at all. The fact that Mitchell is going back to work for the Red Sox after this report is through and the fact that he was still accepting tickets to sit at Red Sox games and getting autographs from Red Sox players while the investigation was ongoing is proof that he cannot keep his conflict of interest hidden. I encourage all Yankee fans to ignore this report and please tell anybody that gives you crap about any Yankees in this report that you dont believe a word about it.

  15. Roger Clemens

Pete can’t go… they aren’t offering free McDonald’s at the press conference.

  16. Mitchell Report

clemens and pettite in the mitchell report..

funny, yanks cheat and still dont win

  17. Flam

If A-rod is on the list the sport of baseball will implode.

My guess is Giambi, Clemens, Petitte and possibly Damon.

  18. C-LO

    This is gonna be bad…

  19. Motown Yankees Fan

I have to give the Yankee organization credit for the brilliant scheduling of this announcement. Back page headlines can read: “Boras made me do it” instead of “Clemroid”. Nice work Hank.

  20. Mike

KB, I think those are all definitely realistic names we could see.

After what happened with Damon heading into Spring Training last year, I wouldn’t be surprised. Pettitte and Clemens pretty much go hand in hand, so that wouldn’t be shocking.

  21. Jonas

How can anyone say it wouldnt matter HOF wise if Clemens is named? The whole world is condeming Bonds, stating that he should not get into the Hall. The same standard needs to be held to Clemens, and the rest of these guys, for cheating the game.

  22. Ryan

I saw a list with Farnsworth. That would explain the anger.

  23. Fernando Alejandro

I think we’re going to see Pavano on the list.

  24. Mitchell Report

    RangerRob.

My view point about Arod is this.
    .
after watching Bonds break the HR record, i think fans are hoping and praying that Arod is clean because they want bonds record broken..

atleast.. i want bonds record broken.. and ive always been a huge arod fan

  25. Roger Lemens

If they are offering McDonald’s, Pete will just invite himself. He can do those types of things, afterall, he’s a fat, loveable teddy bear!

  26. Steve

    Jonas
We will find out whether the condemnation of Bonds was really a racial thing after all if Clemens gets away with it.

  27. J-Dawg

So the A-Rod deal is going to be announced today. That’s a good move for the Yankees to sign him, I hear that A-Rod guy is a fairly good ballplayer. :)

It makes no difference on the timing of this announcement whether A-Rod is on the list or not. You can’t let one report change the entire way that you do business. I don’t think that we will have to worry about A-Rod or any of the younger players. It will probably be targeted at older players and those who are close to retirement or who have already retired.

  28. migames

    Bonds gets into the HOF
    Clemens gets into the HOF

    McGwire doesnt…

  29. Mike from CT

You know, we, as a society, condemn politicians (which is what Senator Mitchell is) all the time for even the appearance of impropriety. So if we do that in the political sphere, why should we not do it here?

Of course it is going to be a rough day in the Bronx. Senator Mitchell works for and is paid by the Boston Red Sox – a city and team who’s whole identity is wrapped up in hating the Yankees. We should hold him to the same standards we would hold him to if he were running for his old office.

It is certainly probable that a number of Yankees received and took illegal performance enhancing drug and they should be dealt with accordingly. But let us not forget that the Mitchell Report comes with more than just the appearance of impropriety.

  30. grafxkid

I’m sure Mike and the Mad Dog will have this on their program today. If we’re all in front of a computer without a tv or radio, we can listen to them online.

  31. Paul9

Obv arod is on there thats why they wanted to get this all done before 2 when his name comes out so he wont have to answer questions until spring training

  32. Steve

    Mike from CT

You are absolutely correct. I only wish that Bud Selig understood that simple concept. Or maybe he does and just doesnt care.

  33. migames

    pettitte is on the list.

  34. MarkK

The Yankees mentioned will be whomever is convenient for George Mitchell and his Boston Red Sox to accuse of steroid use. This report will have little meaning, as there will be nothing new of any import.

As to A-Rod explaining anything, I’d sooner he shut up and play baseball.

  35. KB

Mike- completely agree- that’s why I expect Damon. Probably from his days with K Millar in the Sox clubhouse. The other one to consider is Abreu- such a huge drop in power numbers.

  36. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    migames
    Damn you Alex!!

  37. Vader

Sawx fans will always and forever be consumed with everything Yankees. No matter how many championships the Sawx win it will always come back to the Yankees.

The Yankees are the Boigie-man in their nightmares and what upsets them more than anything else is that Yankee fans don’t feel that way about the Sawx.

  38. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX")

dammit Arod this couldn’t wait 24 HRS

  39. ItalianGreco

Why are only Yankees names being leaked?

  40. Roger Lemens

    Hey, Pete…

When you get a chance, come visit me with your butt-buddy Jason; I’ll give him a few lessons on how to pitch… and I’ll toss you a burger while you’re watching…

    Just kiddinggggggggggggggg

  41. Flam

This is ridiculous there is no WAY Alex Rodriguez is on the list.

  42. Ice Age

You know I really wish this wasn’t happening. But now that it is and 100 prominent Yankees are about to be named, the Yankees should close their doors to everyone. No more media press calls, no more favors for MLB in China, no hosting of the all star game, nothing more. Sour grapes maybe but if I owned the Yankees and saw that 0 Red Sox players get named and all my players get named and that Mitchell is a BoSock I go out slashing like a madman and go Willy Wonka, just keep complete secrecy in that franchise.

  43. Roger Lemens

Your nephew Jason is who I was referring to.

  44. MarkK

Kyle Farnsworth will be on the Mitchell/BoSox list of steroids users? Gee, this might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back and finally stretches Yankees fans’ loyalty to Farnsworth a little too thin. I predict that Yankees fans will turn their backs on their erstwhile hero, Farnsworth.

    (Okay, that’s a bit o’ snark.)

Seriously, I’m a rare Farnsworth supporter and I give the Mitchell/BoSox report no credibility at all.

  45. Steve

    Ice Age

Actually if I was Hank Steinbrenner I would sue Mitchell, MLB and the Red Sox (as Mitchell’s employer) on behalf of all the players. The Yankees cannot allow themselves to be raped like this.

  46. NYY

Why are only Yankees names being leaked?

It’s not just Yankees names that r being leaked. It’s just that we r discussing the yankees who r on roids.

  47. batty

They should make the conference the same time as the Mitchell report to show how utter crud it is.

  48. saucy

“How dare arod upstage the mitchell report ”

    lolololol

  49. Mike from CT

So Raw Story is reporting a long list of players to be named here:

    http://rawstory.com/news/2007/Roger_Clemens_listed_in_report_due_1213.html

The most interesting – to me – are the following names:

    Roger Clemens
    Johnny Damon
    Nomar Garciaparra
    Trot Nixon
    Andy Pettitte
    Albert Pujols
    Brian Roberts
    Miguel Tejada
    Julian Tavarez
    Jason Varitek

Interestingly, Varitek is the only current Red Sox player on the list.
