A-Rod has his say on 60 Minutes

Peter Abraham
December
16

Alex Rodriguez did fine on 60 Minutes. His “Hmm, I have to think about that before giving an answer” expression is certainly well-rehearsed.

He gave a firm denial when asked whether he has used PEDs and he went after Scott Boras again. Meanwhile, did you notice the signed Roger Clemens jersey in his house?

It’ll be interesting to see how the fans treat him next season. He came back, ripped Boras and avoided the Mitchell Report. That should win him some extra cheers.

————

Meanwhile, while the mighty Patriots are 14-0 I’m not convinced they’re getting to the Super Bowl. Their offense looked very ordinary against a lousy Jets team today. The weather was to blame, but the weather could be bad for the AFC championship game in Foxboro on Jan. 20. You have to play no matter what.

I have visions of Fred Taylor or Joseph Addai running all over them. The key for the Pats is getting Lawrence Maroney going, a process that may have started today.

I’ll be in Foxboro on Sunday for the Dolphins game. Looking forward to that.

AROD? Old News. He’s here for 10 years. I hope he does well. I hope he never gets bisted for PED’s. What else is there to say? Lets move on to the other 24 members of the roster who arent accounted for, for the rest of their careers.

  2. Blondie

It’ll be interesting to see how the fans treat him next season.

Oh Papi, come to Mama – Girls dig da long ball

    :D

  3. Varitek got a FREE PASS

ARod doesn’t worry me. He’ll be ok.

The only people that should be worried are the Red Sox, in the event that someone other than a paid member of their front office leads a steroid investigation.

  4. Boston Dave

    Pete,

If the Pats dont look good next weekend, then maybe you have something. If the hopes of the Patriots not reaching the Super Bowl hinge on another blizzard/wind storm of today’s proportions, then there isnt much hope at all. They can be beaten, but I dont think today’s performance means very much.

  5. NJ

I, for one, will cheer for A-Rod every opportunity I get next season.

  6. Marc

A-Rod sounded good. Pats will go 16-0 then lose to the Chargers in the playoffs.

  7. Harry

I thought A-Rod did great on the interview. I don’t get one thing. What did A-rod ever do to Canseco that he’s out to get him? Why would a guy try to diss somebody for nothin? P.S. Pete, About the Pats, i agree with you 100 Percent. The funny thing is, that their bad games came against the teams that they’re supposed to blow out. in today’s era it’s almost impossible to go 19-0. Somewhere along the way they’re due to lose. As a Jet fan i just hope Michael Strahan knocks Brady outta the playoffs!

  8. Blondie

Can’t the Pats ask Romeny to ask the NSA to “ease-drop” on their upcoming opponents?

  9. Boston Dave

    Blondie, you mean “eavesdrop” ?

  10. JT

    pete,
i’d say stick to baseball but i’m not so sure you are good at covering that.

pats didnt play well but got the W and thats how you judge a champ…this coming from a guy who hates the pats

Like I said I could give a toss about the pig skin. 1 nil to the Arsenal will keep me warm tonight as I lay me down to sleep.

  14. TheGhostOfAlvaroEspinoza

JT, don’t insult the guy on his own blog, that’s just not cool. This is a great forum for us fans to come and converse and we have Pete to thank for that.

  15. Keith

How about the MVP he won last year? Will that get him any cheers?

Not many people here care about the Patriots. I’d be willing to bet most hate them in fact.

  16. JT

    alvaro, don’t cry

  17. Peter Abraham

I love JT. He’s not sure I’m good at covering baseball but he comes on my blog on Sunday night at 9:56 p.m. and posts a comment. Hey, thanks for the traffic.

  20. JT

    pete,
only to keep you honest and bring reality to you.

if you didnt talk out of both sides of your mouth as much, they’d be more love.

  21. Charlie

Can a transcription of the A-Rod CBS interview be obtained anywhere? I want to hear what he said about Boras.

  22. JT

    typo: there’d be more love

  23. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX") & dammit SAVE HUGHES !!!

Charlie I saw the 60 mins thing, he seemed very cold when it came to Boras

  24. JT

    mike f, good call

  25. PAT M.

After reading all the posts about Katie Couric’s interviewing A-Rod, I wonder if I should even bother to watch being the G-Men are playing……Pete, I saw Mark Wicker of the Orange County Register today at the Golf Course today…He says he knows you from your trips to Anaheim……Patriots are at home until game # 16 when they travel to the Meadowlands to play the Giants….Hate to say it, they may still be undefeated ……

  26. Paul9

Jose is a joke. I thought i read somewhere that Jose didn’t like Arod because Arod I guess told Jose that mlb was trying to blackball him, but then when someone asked Arod about it he completely denied ever saying it.

  27. JT

after watching the gmen/skins first half, it makes anything a better option…even posting on your blog

  28. joltin joe

Jose was right about a lot of the frauds

  29. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX") & dammit SAVE HUGHES !!!

I wonder if I should even bother to watch being the G-Men are playing

your not missing much trust me :(

  30. TheGhostOfAlvaroEspinoza

Sorry JT, if that’s cool with Pete then I’d might as well keep my mouth shut on the topic.

I think it’s kind of silly that A-Rod even has to come out and say anything in his own defense. Is it because of his ridiculously gaudy offensive numbers? Is is because of Canseco the clown’s attention grabbing assertions?

  31. joltin joe

there are a lot more guys on roids…a lot

  32. joltin joe

    TGOAE

    arod just loves to talk

    90mph…”wow arod”

  35. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX") & dammit SAVE HUGHES !!!

I just see Canseco as a person in the same situation Tyson was in, he’s losing money the book deal is because he’s broke, he needs to publicize it what better way than to use Alex’s name.

what has Jose Canseco said that is a sueable offence ?

wait and see what I say about Alex in my new book ? , I’m surprised his name wasn’t on this list ? he could be talking about in association w/ Alex knowing someone who did it or knowing a supplier ..I do believe at the drop of a hat Alex would sue Canseco so he better have 100 % proof and not come out w/ well at 18 one day in FL. me and Alex worked out at a complex sorry that won’t fly

  36. The Bronx is Burnt

    Blondie -

Be careful. One way or another Arod will break your heart of glass…

  37. jk

Rodney Harrison is the Roger Clemons of the Patriots.

  38. JT

    pat m

    worth seeing the interview

  39. Hillabama

I was thinking how much A-Rod’s batting cage costs. I’m planning to get one.

  40. Waltzing Mathilda

“Looking forward” to watching a football game involving the Miami Dolphins means you are a terrible football fan.

  41. ray

    Peter,
What team or teams do you think are most likely to battle the Patriots either before getting to the Superbowl or in the Superbowl? Dallas lost at home today. Steelers lost today and were dominated by Patriots. Colts didn’t exactly look overpowering today against the Raiders. Colts didn’t even score an offensive touchdown until there was four and half mninutes left in the game.

  42. Blondie

    The Bronx is Burnt-

    Oooh, Rapture!!

  43. Flam

    Question.

Does anyone know when All-Star game tickets are going on sale?

  44. jk

Don’t hold your breath for a public sale of All Star tix. That will be a tough one; as hard or harder than the WS.

  45. Doreen

I am watching the Matsui Yankeeography…I sure hope he’s not traded.

  46. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX") & dammit SAVE HUGHES !!!

    hopefully he is !!

  47. Flam

I support that Brandon. He’s dead weight.

  48. Blondie

    All-star tickets?

I recommend befriending someone cute with season tickets. Yes, they’re out there (so some of them are married, big deal).

  49. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX") & dammit SAVE HUGHES !!!

Kevin Boss runs his route better than Shockey :?

  50. Grant

If the Pats go 16-0 I almost guarantee they DON’T win the bowl.

  51. Mike R.

How could anyone drop that? Insane!

i WANTED TO PUNCH AMANI THERE !!

AND SINORICE KEEPS RUNNING THE OTHER WAY

  53. PAT M.

Just watched the A-Rod interview on 60 Minutes…..I thought he came of real good and rather sincere…Much better than his earlier interviews when he first landed in NYC….In fact it may have been his best …….He handled himself real well ……

  54. Prete Funk Era

I’ll be at the Giants Patriots game. It would be awesome to see my Giants deny the Pats their perfect season.

    15-1! courtesy of the Giants!

  55. alext

    Pete, please.

The Pats will be fine in the playoffs. They only get better in the playoffs. The AFC Championship is the true superbowl this year. I can’t fathom the NFC winning this year. It just sounds too impossible. Too many teams in the AFC that could beat any NFC team hands down.

  56. myrtlebeachfan

Alex was fantastic on 60 minutes. He really showed how pissed he was at Boras and I believed him when he said he hasn’t used PEDs. I didn’t believe him when he said he hasn’t been tempted. Everyone is tempted. I can believe he wasn’t tempted significantly. But it’s got to be a temptation, especially when nobody was getting caught.

A-Rod seems to have done a lot of image repairing. This 60 minute interview definitely got a lot of viewers from Yankeeland and hopefully some from other cities. Enough to repair his image around baseball I would hope.

At the very least, Yankee fans won’t go into next season booing him at his first at bat. Instead, he’ll hear mostly cheers.

  57. Jamie

This has already been asked but not answered…does anyone know of any place on line that I could watch the Arod interview? Thanks alot.

I think A-Rod may finally be learning to use the edit button in his head. On his conference call the other day and again tonight he asked to clarify a question which gave him time to think before speaking.

  61. Harsha

hey everyone. if anyone’s looking for hte arod interview, here it is
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories.....7425.shtml. i got the link over at waswatching.com

every giant season is a duplicate of the season past, just a different year

  65. Thomas

Is this a football blog…or is it a “Yankees” blog?…..somebody answer that for me.

  66. myrtlebeachfan

Well, good friend, let me answer that question for you.

This blog is a Yankees blog that occaisonally dabbles in football, basketball, and bruce springstein.

  67. JT

pete made it into a football blog with his pats comment

  68. RVA Yanks

Personally I can’t wait to see A-Rod back in action this year and in the new Stadium.

    glad that games over

    pete, til next time

  71. StandingO'Neil

Do people with season tickets get offered tickets for the all-star game or are they in the same boat as anyone else?

  72. TheGhostOfAlvaroEspinoza

    Okay…Let’s talk about Johan Santana!!!

    Just kidding…kind of.

Does anyone else get the creeps whenever A-Rod speaks? I know a lot of these guys have sanitized public images, but just seems more pronounced with him.

  73. Jorge Steinbrenner (formerly Mitchell's Eleven, which no longer makes any sense)

This may be my only chance to say this for a long while, so I’ll take my shots where I can for now…

    GO DOLPHINS!!!!!!!!!!!

  74. cupaJOBA

Its a slow day for baseball news and the owner of this blog mentioned some worthwhile news about his beloved Patriots. He could write about Britney Spears if he wanted to and best of all, Pete would still get a ton of traffic and random comments! He posts about Springsteen and I Am Legend too, you gonna rip him a new one for that?

The Patriots were jump starting Maroney along with pushing teams to start worrying about defending the running game. Brady was off today for the first time all year, just like Romo. Pete – They’re champions and 19-0!

  75. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX") & dammit SAVE HUGHES !!!

Donna he’s known Boras since he was 16 yrs. old are you kidding me, try firing somebody that’s been in your life that long, the way he sees it his last contract is done give Boras his payoff but the rift is no bull.

  76. TheGhostOfAlvaroEspinoza

He seems pretty sincere about working hard and being the best player he can be–and it seems like it’s working. He’s an amazing ballplayer, and despite what some sanctimonious fans and those in the media would like to have us believe, is not the Devil Incarnate.

  77. Holy Cow

Donna is sure mature with the A-Rod hatred.

  78. whozat

“I support that Brandon. He’s dead weight.”

    ::jaw drops::

Only in here would someone say that a guy who puts up .290/25/100 basically every year is dead weight. Unbelievable.

  79. SAndMan

Hopefully with the steroid talk abiut to die down maybe we can get back to the SAntana rumors.Which would make for a nice Christmas present.

  80. ArodFan

Arod comes out of this looking pretty good compared to Pettitte & Clemens. Even though Arod is probably a juicer I can forgive him.

  81. Blondie

Sounds like Donna has had her heart broke in previous relationships.

Darling, don’t be a playa hata.

  82. bernie

yeah arod missed 60 min but did see some bits of it. ill spend all my money just to have a talk and spend some time with him. great guy happy to see him back arod arod keep it up lets see a clean home run king …………..

  83. Jim Clark

Don’t watch or care for the National Felons League and its steroid enhanced dog killers. But I get the feeling the only way they will lose is if Jessica Simpson dates the entire team.

  84. Annie Savoy

Donna – I agree with you. I don’t believe a word ARod says. He really is a fraud — all he wants is money, money and more money.

    This was written for him:

“The love of money is the root of all evil”.

    1st Timothy, chapter 6, verse 10

  85. Dee

Harry asked: “I don’t get one thing. What did A-rod ever do to Canseco that he’s out to get him? Why would a guy try to diss somebody for nothin?”

What Arod did was he became a top headline grabber in sports so Canseco decided to use his name to sell more books. Arod may or may not have used PED’s (I believe he hasn’t) but either way I will never base anything on Canseco as my source.

Why do some people jump on every chance to beat up Pete for commenting on the Boss or football etc? It’s his blog and it’s not like he’s writing a whole entry on the Pats here. We’ve all learned to filter through things we don’t care as much about like ads and other stuff online, on TV and on the streets haven’t we? Just curious why people go out of their way to criticize the host when they visit his house.

  86. Dee

I was hoping Arod would fire Boras too, that would be a loud and clear statement. But I understand why he wouldn’t. It’s his last contract, Boras has no major future use to Arod anyway. There’s no need to so publicly slap someone in the face, especially someone who has played a huge role in putting you where you are now. I think Arod is doing the right thing, taking control of his own life while being the bigger person at the same time.

About Andy, I will continue to support him as a Yankee but have to admit not as much of a fan of his as before. I believe the Mitchell report is a sham. I believe Andy was not trying to juice to enhance his performance. I believe he was just trying to heal (but that in a way is trying to beat the system and to cheat nature). I respect him for coming out to admit his use for two days, I just wish his apology didn’t come with so many caveats of “IF it was an error in judgment…I apologize” or “IF I let people down…I’m sorry”. He knows it’s an error in judgment and he knows it’s not the right thing to do, so he should just say so.

  87. Alex

Am I the only one looking forward to Patriots at Giants in two weekends? I’m a Jet fan to begin with, and the Giants looked spotty last night, but New England will have to win that one on the road to go 16-0.

  88. ariel777

I found Arod’s comments regarding Scott Boros to be quite intriguing, particularly the statement that he had no contact with him during the subsequent negotiations. This followed his concern with Boros’ advice and conduct during the process. This leads me to conclude that he is considering a lawsuit for loss of reputation and the like for Boros’ ill-advised recommendations and actions perhaps with an end in view to renegotiate if not vitiate he 15 mil or so that might otherwise be forthcoming to Mr B. After all, 15 mil is a 1/2 year’s work for Alex!!!

  89. Apologistfornoone

As someone said about ARod above, “he seems to be sincere”…

    Oy.

Like Pete said, some things he said seemed to be pretty well rehearsed.

It’s too bad so many column inches and minutes of air time are being wasted analyzing a guy who probably hasn’t had an unscripted minute since leaving the Mariners.

When does ARod get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame?
