A-Rod on 60 Minutes tonight

Alex Rodriguez will be on 60 Minutes tonight and during the interview denies ever having used performance-enhancing drugs.
One has to assume that is true. You can’t go on a show like that and lie because that clip would haunt you forever.

Like it matters anyway. It has been shown through this whole debacle that its the seriousness of the charge, not the proof of the wrong doing that is enough for most of the media to condemn the player and ruin their reputation leaving the person with no recourse or address to take.
I wonder how many articles this appearance will inspire tomorrow, critquing Rodriguez’ insincerity because he didn’t sound like a politician. Almost a guarantee that somebody’s going to count how many times he uses the wors “I” and “if”.

Pete-
Going back to your last few posts about Pettitte’s HGH use & apology. I really think you are telling it like it is. I am a die hard Yankee fan, it’s really hard to believe that Andy did what he did. I think it’s even harder to own up & apologize like FP Santangelo & Gary Bennett have done as well. I appreciate your objective writing throughout the Mitchell report findings.
I am still waiting for ESPN to even mention about the conflict of interest that Mitchell has with his financial stake in Boston and the lack of co-operation from his own team. It will never happen, and the ties that ESPN has to Boston will make sure of it.
I don’t think the whole interview would be on steroids, probably part. They will probably talk about his 2007 season, his opt-out debacle and his coming back. I think he will talk about why it is so great to be a Yankee.
That ESPN bias is such a load of BS. Always has been.
Red Sox fans think ESPN is just an extension of the YES Network.
The truth of the matter is ESPN is both pro-Yankees and pro-Red Sox – which is why those teams alone get 50% of their baseball coverage.
ESPN’s agenda is simply reporting the news and getting the highest ratings.
That’s it.
ESPN’s agenda is simply reporting the news and getting the highest ratings.
Fixed that for you:-)
Holy Cow wrote: [I am still waiting for ESPN to even mention about the conflict of interest that Mitchell has with his financial stake in Boston and the lack of co-operation from his own team.]
Just what financial stake does Mitchell have? It’s been established he’s not a limited owner, and he no longer even gets token renumeration for attending director’s meetings. So I’m not sure what ESPN has to mention, other than Mitchells’ affiliation.
And from what I can say, the Red Sox did cooperate with Mitchell, judging from the access to inter-office emails.
crap!
I meant to strikethru the “reporting the news” bit
does this board support html or not?
is –that– how to do it?
nope, that’s not it either.
Holy Cow
You’ll be waiting until the cows come home for that.
I think you mean
thisJust like Rafael Palmeiro couldn’t have lied in front of Congress? Man he sure would look dumb if he did!
When you watch the interview tonight, pay attention to the awkward mouth twitch when he says “No” to the steroid question. My wife is convinced that’s his tell and he’s lying. I’m not a big believer in body language being iron clad proof of anything, but his twitch definitely could give that impression. It’s pretty funny actually.
If he twitches, he’s a witch ; )
strikeoutwhozat,
try the tag “strike”
I swear, if A-Rod is telling the trueht about not taking PE drugs, I’ll be the happiest guy in the world, but if he’s lying, I have lost one of my biggest heroes of my life. If he’s guilty, which I really don’t know if he is, I really hope he does what Andy did, and confess like a man. Please don’t let this boil over A-Rod if you are indeed guilty.

koolkoreankid,
Just watch for his index finger. If he starts wagging it or stabbing it, then he’s guilty. The last two people I saw do it were Clinton & Palmeiro.
Jackie Jensen
Ever seen picture of Mitchell in a Yankees dugout getting autographs? Is it true that Mitchell has his own box in Femway?
Mel-
I like your take on Johan. I have a good feeling he will be in pinstripes along with Hughes come ST. Cashman will also show he is in control with support from Tampa. I think he is waiting on a new contract to become a FA himself to drive up his asking price. He is in a Win-Win situation, he could also leave on his own terms as well.
Heh, just like you can’t go in front of congress, point your finger at them and deny it…
mel:
Thanks for the Olney link. (And I thought I was longwinded).
Will he talk about what his wife thinks about him taking his girlfriends to strip clubs? As far as lying to “60 Minutes:, hasn’t Mike Wallace said crooks inevitably think they can come on and think tjey cab get away with their spin and have it believe. I don’t know if A Rod is juicing but let’s face it..there hasn’t been a shortstop like him since Honus Wagner or John Henry Lloyd 100 years ago. What does that suggest?
Pettitte says he did human growth hormones twice – in 2002 to get healthy. It’s not a major deal. And it worked, seemingly for a bit. He got hurt again – the life of a pitcher.
The Mitchell report didn’t name McGwire, Sosa and others. For example, how about Brett Boone. Check out his stats before 2001 and then until 2004. http://www.baseball-reference......br01.shtml
I am sure people can cite other examples.
Wow, I feel sorry for Jets fans. Intercepted inside the 5.
Still, GO PATS!
FYI,
Was listening to ESPN radio in the car yesterday, and of course they were talking about IT.
Kind of striking if you match up the dates with the allgeged use, you see a striking difference of Roger’s numbers even within a season. Like going from a 3.5 to 1.0 after coming off the DL. Eerily accurate, of course that’s allegedly and it’s cherry-picking.
But, Roger’s tough all day. He’ll be all right.
“try the tag “strike—
in angle brackets or square brackets?
I guess I can just try it…
html style[strike]bbcode style[/strike]
Jesus the Pats are a dirty playing team!! I HATE THEM!!
it’s ESPN’s juob to cover all possible angles for a “supposive” leader in wide world sports they failed here only 2 ESPN radio announcers and 1 beat writer really has covered the what if part of this investigation
Max Kellerman, Gordon Damer and the writer was Howard Bryant who is really the 1st writer to knock this investigation and I give him credit for covering that angleinstead of the oh he negotiated peace in Nothern Ireland BS like everyone else does. No one really asks themselves why did Selig hire this man and why is his results so concentrated on one team.
that’s a bunch of BS, early in July you have your franchise player David Ortiz admitting he doesn’t know if he took steroids or HGH because he doesn’t know what the products he gets in D.R. have in it (I’m part Dominican that is the biggest bullsh** I ever heard in my life), no follow up by George Mitchell after this, you even have Curt Schilling not cooperating w/ this investigation ask yourself why. And how is it he can gain access to a NY clubhouse then call the search over with. Where was the investigation within the Boston clubhouse ? why was the Toronto search based just on Roger Clemens regardless that he took steroids, what happened to the other players ?
In the next couple of weeks players are going to squeal and this investigation is going to be exposed as a fraud operation based on saving face.
Pete, is this a new show or just a rerun from 12 years ago? I’ve not turned on the TV since the writer strike started.
It is new.
I thought just occurred to me. What if this steroid mess somehow galzanizes the Yankees in having to prove their past championships were legitimate ala the Patriots right now and their Hoodie sized chip! Anyway point is it would be a cool story if they had a theme to play for.
RE: Mitchell’s conflict of interest.
No Red Sox fan can tell me, that if Mitchell held the same position with the Yankees and was the leader of this commission, then 22 Red Sox players were named calling into question some of the great moments in their history… those same Red Sox fans saying “26*” wouldn’t be screaming conflict of interest.
I can’t say Mitchell targeted the Yankees, but we can easily see he DIDN’T target the Red SOx.
Adam we can see his convos w/ the Red Sox was probably 2 secs “did you ?”, “no” , “ok”
whoever is a Jets fan look awaaaaaaaaaay from the t.v. Chad Pennington is now the QB
oh snap !!!
The Jets will not be shut out!!
Can someone please remind me when pitchers and catchers report – is it Feb. 14th or 15th? (not soon enough, either way)
i’m hoping that arod can get through the interview tonight without saying something stupid.
he has an uncanny knack for finding the spotlight. of all the times, days after the mitchell report, to be on national tv…
on another note, i waiting for the same people who use the reasoning that clemens used steroids because he was getting good when he should be in decline to use that same reasoning on posada. posada had a historic year for a catcher his age, but there’s no reason why with todays conditioning programs that an athlete can’t stay near the top of his game into his late 30’s.
this” gotcha ped’s game” is like musical chairs; every player gets to play and the goal is to NOT to be the one left standing with everyone looking at you.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....id=3156636
Gammons & Espn…..extolling the virtues of Brendan Donnelly, and fighting to prove his innocence…COME ON…makes me sick
I agree Randy I., Posada is clearly on roids! You get the credit for that outstanding theory!
I don’t think Mitchell purposefully left off the Red Sox. I just don’t think he went out of his way to nail any of them. There are a lot of teams without anyone on the list. The Red Sox just come to mind because people (especially us) were looking for them. Mitchell just got a couple guys in trouble to squeal, thought he’d get players to talk to him and didn’t. He realized he really didn’t have anything else, and then published the reports anyway.
It’s kind of a cop-out report. He might have thought he could get something else out of all the “hearsay” pages, as I call them, and didn’t. So then maybe he hoped he’d get the Pettittes of the world to come clean. But not everyone is like Andy Pettitte, and not everyone’s situation is as innocent as his.
Gammons has become a Red Sox apologist over the years he really has turned into a tool I don’t listen to him anymore

Gammons = Boston hoot

don’t take that lsat, gmat, or mcat tomorrow. get a good night’s sleep ,and read what i said again.
i’m saying doing well late into a career is not necessarily an indicator of peds.
maybe i see your point though if your point was that it would have better if i hadn’t brought up the subject.
Andrea- when the Red Sox start getting leaked out it’s going to get nasty alot of people are going toquestion Mitchell’s credibility and might even lead to Selig’s dismissal, remember George Mitchell can run what comes out of the Mitchell Report, but he can’t stop players from leaking information to the media, that’s going to happen soon.
Oh, come on, the Jets game isn’t that bad! We’re only down a TD and a FG!
It could be sooo much worse…
(I’m off to watch the Devils and Flyers, if I can manage to get my car out of the driveway)
Pitchers and catchers is February 14.
you guys know what time 60 minutes is on tonight?
Thank you!
Rebecca: I’m so jealous! I wanted to go to that game!
Gammons railed against the Mitchell Report all day on Thursday and has defended many players implicated in it – such as Brian Roberts of the O’s.
Does defending Brian Roberts also make Gammons a Red Sox tool?
The guy is a Hall of Famer for a reason and it’s not because he’s a “Red Sox shill” as many people here believe he is.
The “ESPN is biased” argument is ridiculous.

What does it matter at this point Pete?
The horse is out of the barn. The thin veneer of trust that the game had with its fans is gone.
I’ll never look at the game or the players with the same sense of awe or wonder.
I remember when I would take a small portable t.v. into the hospital where my wife was after having our first baby just so I could watch the Celtic’s play in the playoffs while I visited with her. Couldn’t miss one of those games. I am embarrassed about that today but then I was in total adoration.
Or arrange my whole t.v. viewing pattern around when the Yankees were on t.v. or whatever sporting event was happening at the time that was just too important to miss.
Then one day in my early twenties I realized that it didn’t matter whether the team I was rooting for won or not.
It didn’t put any money in my pocket.
I haven’t watched any pro basketball (and I use that term loosely) since the late 80’s. Not since the rules were disregarded for the sake of entertainment. “HEY, he traveled! Yeah, but wasn’t that a great dunk”.
Pro football like basketball is a game of mostly thugs and preening idiots.
Baseball was always the sport of fairly educated players who could carry a conversation with the media that didn’t have to be doctored by a reporter so that it would make sense to their adoring fan base.
But while we are bashing the games, the players, the officials and owners etc… let us not forget that we are just as responsible for the culture that has tolerated all of this without protest.
Everyday in our jobs we define ourselves as to who we are and what we stand for by our actions as surely as any of the other actors in this play.
Do we measure up? In the end that is all that matters to the immediate people in our lives and more importantly to ourselves.
I don’t post on here all that often (I know, I know…thank God
) but I would say in return thank God that I have a life that brings me joy and prosperity that doesn’t need to be propped up by how the Yankees did last night.
Good luck to all as we move forward. As I said, I will never look upon the games in the same way as before. I know that will be a good thing for me at least.
^^^^ I hate those types of post it kills thread momentum
lol, Randy I was just kidding, but wanted to be the idiot that distorted your words (cause you know someone would). I happen to agree with your original point that some players with dedication and wonder nutrition and exercise routines, players should be able to extend their careers much easier than 20-30 years ago, you would think.
That being said, Clemens is clearly guilty but it’s much easier for us to believe that a mercenary who started in Boston Roger Clemens did it than a nice home grown, even though he left for 3 years guy like Pettitte.
modern not wonder, my edit button doesn’t seem to work.
Buddy,
I know it’s a pollyanna point of view, but I like how Cashman is laying his career on the line. “I’m not managing for my job”.
Holy Cow quote:
“…I am still waiting for ESPN to even mention about the conflict of interest that Mitchell has with his financial stake in Boston and the lack of co-operation from his own team. It will never happen, and the ties that ESPN has to Boston will make sure of it….”
- and then Giuseppe Franco saying something like ESPN isn’t biased against the Yankees !!!
We understand the envy many have of the Yankees, and we have to deal with it — but we are also obligated to remind everyone that ESPN is so obviously and obnoxiously Pro-Red Sox !!!!
Conflict of interest in the scope of the report ???
How the h*ll could such a “smart” man not recognize that the report (done the way he did it) would immediately be recognized as Anti-New York ???
Tell us he didn’t have enough time or money to do the same job on/in Boston !!!
Ireland or not – he is now depicted as being “biased & self-serving” !!!
( Maybe he’ll get an ESPN show ??? )
As the great Tina Turner says, “What’s Ireland got to do with it?”
jeff nj-
you got me. lol.
glad you cleared that up. i’m sitting here in my gallery on cape cod watching snow plows go by and trying to keep myself awake by looking for baseball news. actually, i probably shouldn’t have brought that up; let the knuckleheads think up their own ideas.
I just would love to hear the excuse from Gammons when Ortiz gets caught or how about that Curt Schilling you never know 40’s throwing like he throws, I’m gonna have my foot rested on a couch w/ a glass of champaign when that happens
I’m surprised no one has accused Nolan Ryan who put up some very good numbers into his 40s as a power pitcher despite he played on some lousy teams.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/r/ryanno01.shtml
Ryan actually had better numbers than Clemens in his early forties and pitching many more innings per season.
randy, you won a gallery on the cape?
er, that should read “own”
Brandon -
Sorry but Ortiz stands little chance of getting caught. He’ll be tipped off by Gammons and Mitchell when a random test is about to happen. He’ll do a U-turn and go back home. Pulled from the lineup due to an upset tummy.
Holy Cow,
ESPN is both a pro-Red Sox AND pro-Yankees network.
Many Yankee fans like yourself call it NESPN or a shill for RSN, while Red Sox fans think ESPN is just an extension of the YES Network.
Tell any non-Yankee fan that ESPN is biased against the Yankees and they will laugh in your face and wonder what substances are in your system.
Trying using a little common sense.
Pete never ~ass u me ~(remember).
Who rightly knows who the roiders really are in this time!I would’ve died if Jeter,Mike,Mariano,Melky,Robinsonor Chamberlain were on that list.I pretty well knew Damon wouldn’t be he loves his body too much to junk it up with peds
use common sense yourself, YES is marketed for Yankee fans and NY while ESPN when it turns to NESN pt. 2 because of guys like Peter Gammons and Steve Philips and a John Krok, look closer man. The fact this investigation has yet to be questioned is a joke
Guiseppe,
You have a point about the Network itself being pro-Yankees at times. They’re the biggest thing in baseball, they drive ratings, and they have a huge fanbase no matter what the “Red Sox Nation” thinks.
However, you can not argue that the analysts who work for the radio, website, and television divisions of ESPN are not anti-Yankees.
Here’s what Ireland does not have to do with IT. That really was a feather in Mitchell’s cap and maybe it takes some of the stain off his soul for all the tobacco money.
But what Ireland has to do with the Steroids Report is this. Mitchell has been there before, in a no-win situation that must be won. He blamed the IRA and he blamed the Brits. He created a middle out of whole cloth where there previously was only a zero sum game. Obviously Mitchell would try to broker peace here too. He tried to “Ireland” this situation, blame the owners, blame the players, blame MLB for not moving fast enough. Selig, in his cynicism, thought Mitchell might create a middle ground and they could all walk away, each side taking a little haircut, but ready to move on, graceful exits all around.
Unfortunately the report reads like the players were the targets of the investigation and not merely co-conspirators in the “don’t ask don’t tell” steroids lie that was MLB for the last however many years. That messed up the end game and the players feel screwed for being left holding the bag. So much for a happy ending and a lasting peace. Mitchell missed the mark this time, came up short in a really big game.
mel did you hear the joke about Ike and Tina turner?
Ike beat Tina, to~death~ Do you get it?
I know, it’s bad of me.
anybody think the Jets can win?
I read this on an NYYFAN board give it some thought because it had me thinking alot…..
Sharp considering that was the headline on the NY Post, I think most people have heard that by now. Pretty tasteless and unfunny if you ask me, certainly not worth repeating.
sharp,
As tasteless as it is, that joke is not as offensive as some of your other comments here. Just kidding.
After Ike’s death, the headlines made like Ike had worked hard to change his image. Didn’t care enough to follow the link.
thrillington-
yeah, but the downside is i’m surrounded by red sox fans. the upside from a baseball standpoint is the cape league in the summer and also winters are free to go to florida for spring training etc.
Here’s the problem with that argument. Anyone who already has the preconceived notion that ESPN is biased against the Yankees will find ways to justify that argument when you watch their broadcast.
Truth be told, any criticism of the Yankees by an ESPN analyst is translated as anti-Yankees. It doesn’t matter if the point is legit or not or if the Yankee announcers make that very same criticism. Of course, any praise of the Red Sox in any way is translated by Yankee fans as Red Sox loving and Yankee hating.
Red Sox fans do the same thing. Any praise of the Yankees on ESPN is translated as a Yankee-loving network.
It’s simply a black and white issue for some people regardless of the facts that support otherwise.
BTW, Buster Olney is as pro-Yankee as any national columnist or reporter not based in NY. Colin Cowherd on ESPN Radio readily admits he is a Yankee homer. He’s said as such numerous times on his show.
what’s the statute of limitations on taking two doses of medicine without a prescription in the state of murder? Is it like murder?
hmmm, meant “state of Florida” above.
Brandon I read the report in its entirety yesterday. Boston had 14 players listed 2 of them current Gagne and donnelly.
Both were inquired about steroid usage from Theo and the findings are in the Mitchell report .Theo had written confirmation on Gagne from a scout he uses, and still traded for them ,this very season.Talk about turning a blind eye,a perfect example
The yankees had 20 players named total, shared in the 3 from this season
Clemens,Andy,and Villone
exactly sharp shooter how the hell are thes men not questioned , Selig and Mitchell, how are they not thrown under the rug because ESPN/Selig are playing us for dummies.
They are not being thrown under the bus because it was a voluntary investigation with no subpoena power. Only those who talked and speculated about names were given ink.
Guiseppe,
You’re right, I should’ve said the majority of analysts. But let’s start at the top. HOF Peter Gammons would be the most respected and senior analyst, no? Well, he has more than enough bias on the “balance sheet” to erase the two examples you gave me.
And Colin cheers for the Yankees because he he goes against the grain to create “tension” on the show. He also goes for the winners. Yankees, USC, Patriots, and as the season goes on, the Celtics.
Olney, I’ll give you. But he does seem to be the most even-handed of the bunch, don’t you agree? lol.
Phil you mean to tell me there is no ex-Red Sox clubhouse guy w/ any thoughts on what happened in the inside ? there isn’t a batting coach, an ex-player source, a trainer, a nutrtionist, not one ? do you seriously believe that
What’s going to happen(my guess only) is the government will step in to save mlb from itself, this will be a nightmare to say the least.
Selig is just trying to clean up his image before his contract is up. He will go down in baseball history as the commish that acted too late on steroids under his watch.
yeh they’ll talk about record attendance levels and the additions of the play off division games in post season, the luxury tax, revenue sharing, yada yada yada, but the steroid abuse winked at, will be his claim to fame
Offcials 1 Jets 0

Wow. 14 seconds left. Ravens 4th and goal on Miami’s 1 yd. line. Miami up 16-13. And they went for the field goal. No balls at all.

let’s try that again_oh dammit_
Arods numbers have never changed. He’s been way too consistent throughout his career to think he’s been juicing. The only way he’s juicing is if he’s been doing it his entire career since high school.
great point murphydog. and also the guy who points out the complicity of most fans during the steroids era (am i guilty too because i continued to watch and root for shef, giambi, etc.?)
i am reposting this from the last thread because i am new at this and didn’t realize the discussion had migrated here:
thx to all the interesting and intelligent posters this am (particular thx to murphydog, myrtlebeachfan, VRSCE, holycow and say it ain’t so for their insightful comments).
i watched a bit of george stephanopolous’s discussion show on tv before turning on the PC and, when they got tired of talking about hillary, obama and huckabee, they turned to baseball (god help us). even george will (baseball purist, right winger and usually very much the moral absolutist) said that pettitte’s use could not be seen as cheating and was not very different from getting a cortisone shot (which, by the way, is a pretty powerful tho “legal†steroid!). on the other hand, all the panelists (including the liberals) said that clemens shouldn’t get into the HOF.
the report, baseball’s response to PEDs, and particularly the US drug laws, are all very much informed by politics and therefore extremely flawed. i agree with all those who say that looking at these questions in a black and white manner (e.g., “he used HGH twice so he is by definition a cheaterâ€) is naive and morally suspect.
pete has the best blog i’ve seen, is a bruce fan and seems to be a great dude (even if he’s not a yankee fan as i found out today) but his “it was a crime†statement definitely rubbed me the wrong way. overall, tho, his reaction to mitchell’s implication of andy and others has been very well considered and fair-minded (and he is our host!) so let’s not throw him under the bus (mitchell and selig deserve it for putting out a “definitive report†that is so blatantly selective and incomplete)!
here’s hoping for some good news on the hot stove soon (johan??) because there is no good solution in the foreseeable future to the PED problem — just a mess that will continue to be debated and politicized and screwed up by baseball (selig is such a loser and will be judged harshly by history) for years to come.
Just wanted to add my two cents regarding ESPN…
ESPN is, right now, somewhat anti-Yankee because that is what sells at the moment. If it were popular to be pro-Diamondback, then that’s what they would be. I’ve been living on the west coast for over 10 years now, and there are a lot of Yankee haters out here. After speaking to some of these people, they usually fall into 1 of 3 categories:
1. They’re tired of the Yankees’ success
2. Their team recently pulled out of their respective doldrums and developed something of a rivalry with NYY (Anaheim, Seattle, Oakland, etc.)
– or –
3. The media has got everyone convinced that they need to hate the Yankees.
Usually the people who fall into #1 aren’t big sports fans, they make statements like that because they don’t actually watch the games or follow the season. The people in #2 are legitimate, I guess (although there are few things more pathetic than Angels’ fans). To me, the biggest reason for Yankee hatred is #3. People in this country can only tolerate success for so long. Media outlets (ESPN) understand this and play to it. That’s why they hire guys like Bill Simmons, Jim Caple and Rob Neyer (to name 3). Gammons has been with ESPN for years, but his Red Sox ties are somewhat significant:
Excerpt from Peter Gammons’ Bio on ESPN’s website
Gammons’ vocals and guitar are featured, along with guests such as Theo Epstein, Juliana Hatfield, George Thorogood, Little Feat’s Paul Barrere, Kay Hanley, and an all-star chorus consisting of Red Sox players Jonathan Papelbon, Kevin Youkilis, Trot Nixon, Lenny DiNardo and Tim Wakefield, former Red Sox pitcher Bronson Arroyo, and NESN broadcaster Don Orsillo.

DOLPHINS WIN
randy-
That’s cool. I am involved in the arts. What does the gallery specialize in?
I was hoping the fins would win when they played the pats.
So Mitchell conducts an investigation without subpoena power and relies on the forced cooperation of Met’s clubhouse attendant Kirk Radomski. Radomski rats out dozens of players. What would have prevented Mitchell from asking him to rat out other club house attendants/trainers who might have sold steroids etc. in other club houses? Are we to believe he knew no one else involved in similar activities to himself? Even listing these names and whatever Radomski knew about them (such as Mr. X told me he was supplying players on such and such a team) without further investigation would have contributed to the impression that this report was not just targeting players.
Ouch, anyone watching the Eagles game? Total dirty hit on an Eagle player, and there was no call. He could have broken the guys neck.
mlbtraderumors is saying the yanks have some interest in Kris Benson. I would think Moose could so just as well if not better than what benson would give us and Moose is already signed while Benson would be a whole new waste of a contract. I dont understand how the yanks can have interest in so many mediocre to horrible starting pitchers. Either trade for Johan or dont get anyone – its that simple. We have six possible starting pitchers for next yr not including the massive number of right handed starters in the minors – we really dont need another poor starter w ith a big contract in the organization. All we
need is an ace or NOTHING AT ALL!
I don’t know if any of this is news, but Dan LaTorraca at Pinstripes PA reports that Jose Veras is throwing well in the Dominican Winter League:
Meanwhile, Chad Jennings reports that Scott Rasner, who was non-tendered and dropped from the 40-man, has re-signed with the Yanks and agreed to a minor league contract. [See the Nevada Appeal for more details.] He gets an invite to big league camp.
In other news, Carl Pavano is pouting and counting his money.
For my money, this is the best article I’ve read about Pettitte and also about how HGH is viewed differently from baseball and football viewpoints. Stark crystalized my thoughts on the subject:
http://proxy.espn.go.com/mlb/c.....id=3157202
So, what did McNamee get in return for implicating Roger and Andy? He’s getting a complete walk on a federal prosecution for drug distribution.
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/articl.....p;c_id=mlb
The Feds gave up a conviction and most likely jail time on McNamee, a former narc who was selling/procuring illegal drugs. Let me tell you, somebody wanted Andy and Roger to appear in that report pretty bad in order for the Federales to give up putting a former NYPD narc in jail when he was caught red handed. And this in return for two guys who seemingly won’t be prosecuted? Not to mention the fact that McNamee skated on a sexual assault charge previously.
Let’s just say it’s the first time I’ve seen a deal quite like that in 20 years of experience.
Wow. Quite an incentive to sing.
I’ll say one thing for that George P. Mitchell, he hands out some mighty good free cheddar cheese.
I suggest that anybody interested in being a rat is well served by taking a trip to Boston and look him up at Fenway Park.
That Stark article that Phil linked to above is great. I agree with him 100% on this double-standard.
Brian you can also catch him at redsux spring training games collecting redsux autographs ,try there this spring
Bring 2 doz rotten eggs with you.(incase you get the urge, you know…)
To Holy Cow,
Thanks for your correct points. I don’t happen to take my marching orders from a 1-man jury’s “show trial” that continues to tell us to shut up about the many names left off the “final” list. Knowing this, they should’ve conducted their glittering spectacle differently. Brian Roberts is a good example.
For more on McNamee’s sexual assault prior see: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....id=3153874
McNamee lied repeatedly to cops investigating him as the perp in an alleged rape at a St. Pete Hotel pool in Oct 2001, partially witnessed by a hotel employee. The woman was found to have a near fatal dose of GHB, the date rape drug, in her blood, with a bottle of the drug near the pool. The woman later lied about why she was at the hotel to begin with – - she was seeing a married Yankee employee – - and was not willing to reveal that publicly. The police decided to drop the investigation.
McNamee later refused to pay his legal bills for this representation and was sued by his lawyers for non-payment of their fees. The lawyers eventually settled for less than half of what he owed them.
McNamee later showed up in the Grimsley investigation and of course as the informant getting a walk on federal drug charges and probably jail in exchange for informing against Pettitte and Clemens in a private corporate, non-criminal investigation.
This is the same McNamee who left NYPD after 3 years to become a bullpen catcher.
are people in here still complaining about roger and andy being mentioned in the Mitchell Report?
wow, find something else to complain about..
It would be a different Story if they were Innocent..
but its pretty obvious that they are not.. and as fans i think we need to realize that..
and anyone in here that is still “complaining” about it, should really find something else to do with their life
Bill Clinton went on national TV and vehemently denied any relations with Monica Lewinsky. Just because A-Rod went on 60 minutes doesn’t mean he’s telling the truth. I assume he’s telling the truth, because I really don’t have any other basis for judgment on the matter. But I wouldn’t say it’s true because he’s going on 60 Minutes. Some people are just liars, and it doesn’t matter who they tell them to.
If I’m Mitchell, I need a shower after talking with McNamee. And I hope McNamee’s lawyer in this latest dust up got paid cash, up front.
Even Schlling, who doesn’t like A-Rod as a person, once said that he was clean, which can be viewed as a statement against interest, giving it increased credibility.
Good luck for a rod hope he sounds good over there!
Brandon,
I really like that thing you posted from NYY Fans. Seeing it laid out like that gets me wondering. Usually, I dismiss all the anti-Yankee talk, but this whole investigation seemed to focus on this area of the country, specifically NY.
What I find interesting is the guys who Selig seems to love are the old money owners. People who had money most of their lives and were part of the club.
The Steinbrenner family, namely George, were self created. From what I understand, he wasn’t always a millionaire and didn’t inherit a fortune. He was a shrewd guy who built his businesses successfully and got the Yankees at the right place at the right time.
I wonder how much of this perceived bias by the Commissioner and the other owners has to do with that fact. That George bought the Yankees for a song back in the 70’s and now they are worth over a billion.
Clearly this investigation wasn’t focused on other areas of the country.
You can say that only the two idiots in NY (radomski and mcnamee) were dumb enough to get caught and they didn’t have anyone else anywhere, but to call this investigation complete and fair is a laugh.
I don’t have sour grapes that Yankees got caught. I figured there were guys over the years who were using. I just think if you’re going to name names, you can’t just tip your toe in the water and pull it out and say “I’m done”. You have to do this thoroughly.
From the looks of it, there was nothing thorough about what happened here and I think once they got a few sexy names, Selig ended it and wanted to end it.
If David Ortiz and Manny are not taking anything, I’d be stunned. Ortiz especially.
Somehow no trainers in Boston were caught. Guess they know how to sell and deal better in Beantown than in NYC.
“and anyone in here that is still “complaining†about it, should really find something else to do with their life.”
Find something else to do with their lives… like become a Red Sox troll and post here as Roger Clemens?
I guess this is a little too nuanced for you inbred folks up there in Boston, but the point is not whether Clemens and Pettitte did something wrong, they did. The point is that the quality of the report was garbage, uneven and distorted, pulling out all the stops on some big names and letting some other big names, (Sosa, for example), skate. At the same time, the good Senator named a guy like Brian Roberts based on the statement of a onetime friend who said Roberts made an admission to him about steroids.
Hopefully one day, Roger, you will experience law enforcement like this in all its rabid excess.
murphydog
haha.. a redsox “troll”
thats what you people call it?
oh, and as far as you thinking im from boston..
id say your about 800 miles off..
good try though… i admire your effort
murphydog
So in addtion to being an ass hole, he is a liar as well. I am very disappointed that Andy would continue to associate with him.
Yet unlike with Bush, he never lied us into an unnecessary war which has cost the lives of almost 3900 US troops.
If lying matters to you, start with the costly one. Compared to that, anything Clinton or A-Rod do is almost meaningless.
murphydog
Hopefully one day, Roger, you will experience law enforcement like this in all its rabid excess.
haha..
are you a lawyer?
this is a blog and all of a sudden you think the law should get me?
wow… i hope the law gets you also..
there.. take that.. it hurts doesnt it..
grow up
I meant to add he is a liar and rapist. Yeah the guy is very crediable.
Excellent article by Stark.
How could someone working for such an anti-Yankees network as ESPN be so fair to Andy Pettitte in that piece and rail against a fellow New Englander in Harrison?
Um, because the “ESPN is anti-Yankees” argument is a farce.
Hey, let’s keep politics off this blog. This is not the forum for that BS.
The quality of comments recently posted on this site has degenerated to a very low level.
A sad reflection of human nature. Most of the derogatory remarks are contemtible.
G Franco –
ESPN is not anti-Yankees… but several of their primary baseball analysts seem to be. ESPN, from a business perspective, loves the Sox and Yankees. but if most of the people in the country hate the Yankees, it pays to have at least a few analysts who do as well.
Bring back harold reynolds.!
Had the opportunity to play in a local golf tournament that raises cash for a Children’ Hospital here in Orange County….The event always attracts many local former and current ballplayers that live in the area…..I played in the same foursome as Don Baylor…But in the group behind was non other than 03 ALCS hero Aaron Boone…..Naturally the Mitchell report was a hot topic….Just about everyone agrees that HGH is not viewed in the clubhouse as is the Anabolic juice….It’s almost a badge of team commitment when used in recovery from an injury or from surgery….However those who misuse the drug is an issue….But it is viewed differently from steroids……Aaron did say that Andy Pettite is a class dude, totally dedicated to his team and teammates…..Frank Tanana called the whole Mitchell investigation as a BS witch hunt to cover Selig’s ass on Capitol Hill……Funniest guy was Rex Hudler, man he loved Billy Martin and Donnie Mattingly……..By the way, Don Baylor just crushes a golf ball….Not always on the Fairway but easily 325…….
Roger:
Maybe I was off on the geography; obviously Boston is a state of mind.
Please enjoy your stay here and feel free to keep posting. Your stuff is really illuminating.
Save Hideki,
You make a sound argument but I disagree that some of the analysts are anti-Yankees.
Too many people here translate any criticisms of the team – legit or not – as hating them. I just don’t buy that argument and I really don’t think most of the analysts care who wins.
And I completely agree about Harold Reynolds. HR was a great analysts on ESPN and as pro-Yankee as anybody.
Giuseppe,
You’re way off on this. Everybody knows that ESPN was founded and is run by Mass holes. After the 2005 ALDS, Chris Berman talked about how disappointed he was to see the Sox lose. You think he’s not calling any shots?
Learn what you’re talking about before you continue to make completely bogus statements.
G Franco – I think Gammons is pro-Sox, which by default gives him a slight bias against the Yanks. I dont expect him to say “Joba stinks or Phil Hughes wont be good” but he is certainly pro-Sox. From what I’ve seen in person, I think Gammons is a big fan of guys like Joe Torre, Cashman, Jeter, etc… so i guess it’s more of his love for the Red Sox than any hate for the Yankees. Steve Phillips, on the other hand, is as close to anti-Yanks as it gets. Jim Caple seems to be a grade-A Yankee hater also.
I havent watched Baseball Tonight religiously in a while but I believe Gammons and Phillips are a big part of that show. I do think the writers like Kurkjian, Olney, Stark… all do a pretty good job.
The McNamee posts are supposed to offer an insight into how cases are made and who your witnesses are. In a criminal case, you sometimes take your chances with guys like McNamee and Radomski because that’s the only way to get the bad guys. I emphasize BAD guys.
But using the McNamees and Radomskis of the world as key witnesses is a risky proposition. They can sometimes make the jury sick and your case can fall apart because it’s based on them. Any good defense lawyer can expose them as scum who are getting a sweetheart deal and therefore have every reason to lie, exaggerate or embellish. Then the jury can send a message to the prosecutor via the verdict: we didn’t like the deal you gave the informant. He should have gone to jail, and the guys you have on trial should have been treated better.
So, let’s just understand that Mitchell had an extraordinary luxury here. He never had to put his vulnerable and questionable witnesses up for cross examination and suffer the reaction of the jury. And he got the Feds to roll over for him on at least two criminal cases to give him significant cooperation in a private business’ internal investigation. It just doesn’t happen that way in the ordinary course of business. It shows some extreme overzealousness on Mitchell’s and IRS’ part.
Much has been made over Mitchell’s ties to the Redsox and his motives. However, Mitchell’s loyalties and motives are irrellevant. What he has done here is contempible. Calling out only a few so called perpetrators when he knew full well that there are many more is either lazy or malicious. In any case this report although it makes some good suggestions, is incredibly iniqitous…
This could very well be the dumbest claim in the history of Pete’s blog.
Congratulations.
about 15 minutes to arod, eastern time
When the MLB networks starts I wonder who they will get for
“in baseball” opinion pieces?
Chris Berman is a New York fan all the way…Especially the Yanks & Jets…..Get a clue….
Mitchell report = witch hunt led by a Red Sox front office paid advisor. Yawn.
ahhh! he did the mouth twitch!
whatever ARod
Blogging 60 Minutes
First story: Don’t ask don’t tell
whatever -
is dont ask dont tell about Bud Selig’s pre-2006 PED policy?
why was I under the impression that all of 60 minutes was about A-Rod?
Eh.
Re: Giuseppe Franco (his quote)
“…You make a sound argument but I disagree that some of the analysts are anti-Yankees.
Too many people here translate any criticisms of the team – legit or not – as hating them. I just don’t buy that argument and I really don’t think most of the analysts care who wins….”
A with all due respect; please actually listen to the broadcast and even try to notice the inflections; the comments; and the levels of ‘excitement’ when anyone else beats the NYY…..and their ‘excitement’ when the RS win or do something well !!!
We NYY fans live with this. It’s part of being a Yankee fan. We understand.
But it’s pure stupidity or arrogance or just a simple lack of listening to say that ESPN is ‘for-the-most-part’ (heavy majority) not Anti-Yankee !!!
John Miller ??? Just listen to that ‘golden voice’ turn to undisguised disappointment whenever a Yankee even gets a hit. If they’re losing – he’ll broadcast the score every minute and a half ….if they’re winning we’ll hear some cute folksy story of his ; but almost never hear the score…little things – but obvious !!!
Analysts don’t care ????
C’mon GFranco !!! Analysts don’t care who wins ????
Everybody’s a fan of someone; especially someone working in the industry !!! (it’s just that the good ones make it tough to figure out their personal favorites are….even you should be able to figure that one out on your own.)
GEEZ.
haha. Close but not quiet.
Let us know when A Rod starts. I’m going to revel in Dallas losing as long as I can.
I am all Mitchell reprted out. So for those missing the great game and you have digital cable or sattelite ESPN Deportes is showing winter ball games. This afternoon they showed a game from the Dominican League. FYI Robbie started playing yesterday or the day before and Melky is due any day. I you live in Northern NJ and have time warner it is channel 173
Arod is sooooooo devilish hot.
Oh, how I would I looove to cheat with him.
Move over, Cynthia.
Cheers to Brian Westbrook..
how many players take a knee at the 1 to seal the victory?
i am sure he cost some people a fantasy football title… but that was pretty cool to see team vs individual stats for a change.
It was quite obvious during the ALDS vs Cleveland…The announcers, Skip Carey in particular were so far over the edge it was an embaressment for TBS….As for John Miller, I think he gives the Yanks great respect as a baseball institution but recently he has had a slightly sharp edge to him….Maybe he too expects more from the team…….
Did I hear that Clemens might come back ? Just when it seemed that Andy would rid himself of big buddy Roger the guy who turned him onto drugs.
ok when the crap is arod gonna be on?
If Clemens comes back, it won’t be as a Yankee.
Pat M –
The Indians series really was bad and pretty obvious.
ARod comes on before Andy Rooney
A-Rod is not scheduled until the back half of 60 Minutes.
Arod before Aroo?
Currently, the mating rituals of exotic birds..
When Katie asks arod why he is so bad in the post-season, he should just say he is a choker, not that “I stunk.” Stinking makes him appear to be lovable, which he is not.
He is no Manny, who beside being clutch, because he doesn’t take things seriously like arod, he is lovable because he appears to be innocent, the last thing arod is.
the Mick -
the only thing Manny loves is asking to be traded from Boston and cheating on his wife (both facts)
Manny loves to hit.
ARod + Katie are on ! Wonder if Cynthia will join in.
alright, he’s on
He’s on now!
She is, saw video of her.
Is it me or did Katie just look crazy.
sure he is a great hitter… but he is not a “lovable” guy outside of Boston. In reality, he is a complete dirtbag. A dirtbag who can hit… but a dirtbag nonetheless.
arod blinks his eyes 3 times then nods his head up and down before he lies.
If Clemens comes back, it won’t be as a Yankee.
hopefully he does..
start buying them syringes folks! time to start throwing em
arod and bonds are best buddies
Yeah Katie, I saw so and so shooting so and so in the butt with roids. PLEASE!
Clemens –
If you can’t find any more syringes, ask Ortiz (or his personal trainer in D.R.)…
you just cant believe a word he says
Why was Alex watching the WS?
The Mick -
throw Ortiz into that group… he is a major Bonds supporter. I dont get it, but alot of the players think Bonds is legit (Ortiz and Manny included)
katie is ripping him a new one
it’s obvious couris knows absolutely nothing about baseball
the Mick…. no, YOU cant believe a word he says because YOU hate ARod. I choose to believe people unless they give me a reason not to. But whatever works in your personal life is your prerogative. just speak for yourself.
Why was Alex watching the WS?
Ummm, he`s a baseball fan
Boston Dave
They love him because he is their role model
I am a baseball fan, and I didn’t watch it.
Cynthia looks like she had work done. SHe looks very different.
Uhh I think Cynthia has a hickie. Good job A-Rod.
Arod will be the next bonds .
I just saw the midgets.
he is such a phony
Good article by Stark
The way I remember it, Harrison’s drug test failure and suspension was only a little note/article at the time, definitely not a headline. Interesting that we never really get all uppity about ethics when it comes to the NFL…granted, American football is pretty much all about legalized assault xP
showing off his awards, jeter must be laughing his ass off
You`ve got a lot to back that up right Mick?
I love how ARod gets slack for possibly cheating on his wife. Do people realize that probably 2 out of every 3 players (I know this for a fact about the Red Sox players so I’m guessing on the other teams) cheat repeatedly???
“i do that pretty well”
You have a lot to back that up right Mick?
re: his post-season performance: “I stunk.”
Well that was a nothing interview. I learned nothing new. Except that I saw he has a pool with an amazing view.
mike nyy
huh?
ARod looked a weasel, or a pygmy possum at least.
Andy Rooney is on !
OH JOY!! Someone needs to get Andy a pair of sissors to cut those bushes above his eyes.
Why is posting taking so long?
What a funny segment. I guess they wanted to talk to a ball player about steroids and then threw in a couple of things about his career.
He looked like a zombie and lol at his remarks about Boras. I’m sure he’s crying, rolling all over his 15 million dollars.
I still like A-Rod, though
.
One can send it to him as xmas gift courtesy of this blog.
Hi ARod !!!
Wooo Hooo !!!
Lookin’ Good, Papi!!
Picture this: it’s 5 years from now, aroid is nearing the HR record, Yanks haven’t won a WS since 2000, what do you do as a Yankee fan?
1. Cheer arod on
2. Boo him out of town
3. Jump on the redsox bandwagon after they win their 5th
straight WS?
George Mitchell is not just a “paid advisor” or “director” for the Boston Red Sox.
George Mitchell is a MINORITY OWNER of the Boston Red Sox. [link]
He has a financial interest in going easy on the Red Sox. This, my friends, is vintage George Mitchell.
what you would expect from AROD, keeping everything emotionally at arms length. Let’s just hope he has some fun this year, he seems like he does better when he chills out and isn’t thinking so much. He should buy 55,000 tickets this year and pass them out to fans for free
3. Jump on the redsox bandwagon after they win their 5th
straight WS?
Seriously. Lay off the smack.
Thats not the only thing she knows absolutely nothing about!
Alex, darling, if ya need some help relaxing, with Cynthia being preggers and all, call me !!
I can’t believe I temporarily turned off The Incredibles to watch that blaaah interview.
A-Rod said he’d trade his MVPs for a World Series Championship to put on that shelf.
When asked about Boras, he said he doesn’t communicate with him and hasn’t since the contract debacle.
He said the issue with the stripper was something that brought him and Cynthia together…so he didn’t deny it.
Nothing new was said in the interview, but Katie’s questioning was very direct…more direct than a beat reporter. For example, she confronted him about the papers calling him “Pay Rod” and “Phony” and a “Disingenuous person.”
Pretty boring stuff. I guess Jeter is finally rubbing off on him.
Phil
All 3 things you mentioned are lies by arod.
Why didn’t MURRAY CHASS bring this up again? Or any other sports writer for that matter.
A Rod will NEVER please everyone but as long as he hits like last year who cares?
Nothing new was said in the interview, but Katie’s questioning was very direct…more direct than a beat reporter. For example, she confronted him about the papers calling him “Pay Rod†and “Phony†and a “Disingenuous person.â€
Yea OK. I guarantee there’s 10 big mouths at ESPN that would lay into him, starting with Peter Gammons.
Crap I missed it. It does get replayed right? Hope someone posts a video link later. Paging Dr. A…
Pats 14-0? No one cares. Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea . That is the only result of today that’s of any worth.
ARSENAL!
Oh c’mon – guys are no different.
How many times have I seen a guy drooool at the screen over some boring hoochie mama on MTV.
Geez, you guys don’t read maximum for their personalities, do ya!
Really I hope I am wrong but I hope , for the sake of all true Yankee fans and myself, that he doesn’t become the 2nd coming of barry bonds, only a “nicer” version.
Here’s a funny thought. Cynthia Rodriguez is playing Yoko Ono, while A-Rod and Scott play John and Paul. (For the younger folks, that’s a Beatles reference).
Hey blondie there are other websites around for what you are looking to do, i’m sure I don’t need to point you in the right direction.
INtersting now the snippet they had up on their web site which contained the rest of the steroid quote about his teamates as well as him talking about being tested 8 times this year as well how he thinks baseball has done with the issue were not inthe final broadcast. Happens all the time but makes you think what else was cut out.
Anyone know who he was working out with in the cage?? I dont know why but I thik this coming of age in terms of seperating himself from Boras will in the end give him even more confidence in the coming years.
Murphy, I pegged Scott Boras as the Yoko, ARod as John, Jeter as Paul (the boring one), Moose as George (the handsome one), and Joba as Ringo (our mascot).
“A Rod will NEVER please everyone but as long as he hits like last year who cares?”
Yep- that about sums it up for me, too. Spring training can’t get here soon enough!!
The ESPN crew would NEVER ask him those questions because, to a player’s face, they NEVER get direct or offend the player because Disney would never let them. Why? Because they use those players for ratings and would never risk angering them.
They always softball their interview subjects to their face…especially Gammons.
gayle,
do you really think he has cut borass out?
Jennifer – Save Phil Hughes!… I don’t think you fully realize just how unattractive hate really is!!!
Jennifer- what sites does Alex frequent ??
thanks for the info, in adavance.
Jennifer – Save Phil Hughes!
Hey blondie there are other websites around for what you are looking to do, i’m sure I don’t need to point you in the right direction.
MEOW!
Mick yes I do. He still will pay him his commission and he is still his agent as he doesnt really need one anymore after this contract as it is his last contract. Please remember this is someone who has represented him since he was 16 years old (half his life) and he has not talked to him since the opt out sounds to me like someone he has cut out.
Jeter might be boring but he knows better than to constantly talk about himself like arod the egomaniac.
Maybe that’s why he “stinks” in the clutch as he said to katie who was awestruck when he told her those bp pitches were clocking in at 90 mph. Maybe if he stopped thinking of himself so much he would hit in the post-season.
Wonder what he got for that interview?
60 Minutes does not pay the interview subjects.
gayle Thanks for pointing that out.
yeah, (Jennifer – Save Phil Hughes!)
Word up to what “The Bronx is Burnt” and “Big Bank Yank” said.
Girls have to sick together. I’m sure there’s plenty of ARod to go around. I’d be more than happy to share.
Gayle,
How do you know he hasn’t spoken to borass? Not because he said so I hope.
oh no did i miss it?
Mick, we get it. You think everything Alex says is a lie.
lc you can see most of it on cbs.com
Are you kidding me? I think Gammons almost exploded when he had to talk about Alex the night the Sox won the World Series. He even said something like his actions were the reason he’ll never win a championship! I’m sure that wouldn’t offend a player…
Get real phony Mick. The Red Sux haven’t repeated since 1916. The last team to repeat was the Yankees in 2000 and that was a three-peat.
The Yankees have repeated 12 times in their storied history.
Chris: Read the post. I said to the players’ face.
Big difference saying something to someone’s face as opposed to not.
Read the post.
Phil
As I said before, I hope I’m wrong but I just want the Yanks to win, ok? I’m not the only one using arod as a scapegoat. Just because he had a great year last year (exluding the playoffs, of course) doesnt take him off the hook. But maybe yankee fans have changed. It used to be all about the winning.
They like to say 2 in the last 4, it sounds much better than 2 in the last 90.
hey Mick….click my link…this is what will happen when someone outside the Sox front office conducts a PED “investigation”….
26-7
The Boras agency is more than Scott Boras. If his relationship with Scott has changed for now, there are ly many other people who are employed by the agency that he has dealt with in the past and can deal with in the future.
“That was me” – awesome…2 in the last 90….LOL
Mick: whose taking him off the hook?
I just don’t think every word out of his mouth is a lie.
edit: who’s taking…
Mick do I believe him yes. I am not as cynical as you to believe that EVERYTHING someone says is not true.
Blondie:
Sir Paul didn’t really get boring until after the band broke up. You know, Silly Love Songs and all that.
Phil,
Not every word, you are right, he did say he stunk in the playoffs.
All I’m saying is that we want to win it all again and all the mvp trophies in the world might not be enough.
gayle,
not everything he says just the important stuff
murphydog-
You know, Silly Love Songs and all that.
the divorce has been entertaining.
Mick: would you rather had A-Rod say that the MVP trophies were more important than a World Series Championship?
Alex can’t win with you no matter what he says.
He went on 60 Minutes to share his side of the Boras debacle and probably to repair his image.
Imposter Mick
All the things you hope for have already happened. The 2007 WS, Mitchell’s list. What else do you need? How about seating for another 20,000 in half stadium?
Phil, you said that 60 Minutes does not pay the subjects of its interviews. I suppose you heard this from them.
Be skeptical, man; this is CBS News we’re talking about. They are not to be per se trusted.
it seems the perception of arod has changed 180 from 06 to 07…let’s face it people, he has become the poster child for choking and all the rbis and mvps in the regular season won’t change it for me.
ignore the troll
Mick
I’m guessing you were one of the people who wanted A-Rod gone and wanted to sign a Brosius type player instead.
Anything he hits over .280, 20 HR’s and 60 RBI’s in the regular season should be a plus then. The Post season is 9.5 months away so save a little venom for then.
Blondie:
“the divorce has been entertaining.”
Forgive me, but…. she hasn’t got a leg to stand on. (OK, sorry, sorry. I know, tasteless, unfair, cruel).
Mark: Actually it was reported by two independent sources during the “Rather-gate” investigations into Dan Rather’s GW Bush military service reporting.
So, yes, I believe that 60 Minutes does not pay the interview subjects.
pat – Mick is a Sox troll
In case anybody cares, Bill Simmons is back with a new page 2 segment in which, while responding to reader mail, he insinuates that Pettitte uses steroids and makes the highly misleading assertion that “The Yankees had nine members of their 2000 WS team on the Mitchell Report” (which is a “curse” in the making since they haven’t won since).
Now I know Simmons is a homer and makes no apologies for it, and he’s by no means a “real” journalist. I’d consider him like a poor man’s Keith Olbermann, less insightful, with more of a comedic slant.
But still, he’s a member of the media, and it’s this type of blatant laziness that is infuriating. I don’t even care whether or not he was joking. I have always appreciated him for some of his more humorous observations, and at the end of the day the average sports fan probably takes his assertions with about a pound of salt. I think I’m sufficiently turned off to the extent that I’ll no longer read his columns.
I don’t care if I ever hear another word from arod. that’s his problem, he loves to hear himself talk and I know prominent Yankees who would verify this. More winning, less talking or would that be too boring?
Phil: I didn’t ignore your point about a reporter saying it to his face, but I was trying to breakdown your reasoning for saying that no one from ESPN would do it because of Disney. That’s weak. You are right, I’m sure that few reporters would say that to his face, but to say NO ONE at ESPN would?
What it really boils down to is that you gave Katie Couric too much props for asking ‘tough’ questions. She could give two flying expletives about A-Rod. 60 Minutes just thought that he’d slip up and say something negative about baseball and steroids.
pat,
just looking into the future and hoping i’m wrong, funny when a die-hard fan like myself who has seen the good and the bad for many more years than most of you have been alive gets accused of being a troll
Alvaro – I agree (if what you are saying is correct). Comedy is one thing, but if he crossed that line in his column, it’s irresponsible and in poor taste. Does he think the Sox 2004 and 2007 teams were 100% clean? Please.
…..and with half a chance Boston would’ve tried to sign him after he ‘opted out’ !
…but they hate everything he thinks; does; & says.
Idiots.
Chris: I didn’t give any “props.” Just said she was allowed to ask tougher questions.
Disney/ESPN distributed a memo to their staffers about how to conduct interviews with people whose sports they broadcast. It outlined that they were to be treated with “kid gloves.” This was reported by numerous former ESPN reporters to include Dan Patrick and Harold Reynolds.
As for your “that’s weak” comment. Perhaps you should research a bit while “breaking down” my comments?
Bill Simmons should just be concerned on what he should do with the extra unsold 5 million copies of “Now I Can Die I Peace” which has been sitting on the top of the New York Times NON-SELLER List since 2004.
So, Yoko (Cynthia) whispering in John’s ear (Arod) how he didn’t need Paul (Scott)? Interesting idea, murphydog.
‘Ceptin’ I’m a Paul fan, and I can’t stand Yoko! And Paul did pretty well without John. Silly Love Songs notwithstanding!
Alvaro – I didnt think Simmons’ comment was that bad. I mean, I think the guy is a complete tool but I didnt think he crossed the line with the Clemens’ curse comment. At least he doesn’t pretend to be impartial and unbiased like some of the other, and I use this term loosely, ESPN “reporters”.
Simmons is, if nothing else, honest about his convictions. He’s always been a Red Sox / Boston fan and does call ESPN out, when necessary, despite working for them.
Murphydog- LOL!!!
does anyone have Bill Simmons’ email address? I figured it would be listed on his page considering he responds to readers emails.
I love new york finale tomorrow right?
Is Alex Dominican or Puerto Rican ??
Inquiring minds wannna know!~!
Yeah, Boston Dave, you might be right…could have just been a kneejerk reaction on my part. I have a feeling Pettitte will be haunted for the rest of his playing days by having his name on the report, and that is frustrating to me. Could really care less what happens to Clemens, but I believe Pettitte just made an isolated mistake and, right or wrong, I don’t think he deserves that. Oh well.
Paul9-
“I love New York” is okay, but it doesn’t “stack” up against “Salt N’ Pepa” or “Kimora Simons” show.

It’s funny how clean the redsox came out of this. They can even write clemens off, the original sock he is. I guess when an owner who gets appointed commissioner, appoints a board of director of the redsox the chief investigator something like this is bound to happen.
Alvaro – Pettite will definitely hear it when he pitches outside of NY for the rest of his career and will never get rid of this. It probably didnt do a damn thing for him either. The only hope is that the players who used PEDs from non-NY teams are outed. If/when the world finds out about David Ortiz using ’stuff’, for example, Sox fans won’t have much ground to stand on.
I think “The Mick” has a man-crush on Alex. That’s okay, no shame in that, he is a hottie. But dude, jealous carping is sooo Bostonian.
thanks Phil
everyone should feel free to rip Simmons a new one…. ask him if he honestly thinks the Sox are all clean. If he doesn’t, is he a hypocrite? Ask him about Rodney Harrison and if that means the Patriots should have an asterisk.
I have to admit, when ARod was in his home batting cage tonight on 60 Minutes and said “2 outs..bottom of the 9th…” and hit that ball with a solid crrrrackkk then grinned and said “that one was a home run” my wife & I were grinning ear to ear.
It felt so good to hear that ball hit that bat. It was like being taken to a place where the game was what was important and not Bud Selig or Senator Mitchell McCarthy or cheating ballplayers.
I can’t wait till spring training comes and my baseball clock starts ticking again. I don’t know about any of you, but I’ve had enough talk of peds and steroids to last a lifetime.
Let the games begin in 8 weeks…get the hell out of our way Senator McCarthy Mitchell. Baseball is bigger than any blowhard politican, corrupt commissioner or cheating ballplayer!
Mick–
Also, people are seriously glossing over the fact that Theo Epstein acquired two players that had been highly suspected of steroid use despite concerns voiced by his own staff. One of his scouts even explicity said “Steroids IS the issue (with Gagne)”. Theo, and other GMs, come off looking pretty bad in this report, but nobody is talking about it.
Drive 4-5
Wasn’t that great!!!!
Blondie:
A-Rod is Dominicano, born in Washington Heights, NYC.
Doreen:
Yeah, I’m a fan of Sir Paul (not Boras as Sir Paul). I still remember how everything used to stand still when their new albums came out.
Hmmm…ESPN memo huh? That sounds pretty interesting and sad if it’s true. Care to point me in the right direction?
Doreen
How ’bout it! Did that feel good or what? I looked around the room and my wife, my brother and my sister in law were grinning ear to ear.
THAT is what this great game is all about. We cannot lose sight of that.
This whole steroid issue is a soap opera that non-fans need to talk about. Every player in this era will always be guilty of using and it will stop only when mlb tests randomly and sincerely and really wants to put an end to this mess. After they find a test for hgh some other designer drug will come along anyway so this curse could last forever.
thanks, Murphydog
Aye, Chico!
Alvaro,
The Yanks will get the brunt of it. Why does everyone hate us so much?
Why does everyone hate the yankees? Is it the years of winning? A jealousy?
Er, actually the Yanks probably have the largest fan base in the world. But the hatred they do receive likely comes from the years of winning; the large payroll is an added justification people use for the “unfairness” of it all.
alvaro
sounds like jealousy to me.
Plus our uniforms are the best in the game, they hate that too.
Eh, it’s human nature too. People hated the Cowboys during their run in the early 1990s, they hate the Pats now, and they probably hated the Lakers, Celtics and Bulls back in the day too. Plus, the Yankees absolutely dominated baseball for the better part of a century. Stirs up a lot of bad feelings among those who root for another team.
it’s a jealousy of a tradition with winning players who had character and to some extent, were characters. It is up to our fan base to preserve this tradition.
This is why no one should address the “Mitchell Report.” Everyone except the Yankees knew the results would be lied about by the media and people would believe them. eg taking the total number of names on the whole list and assigning them all to the 2000 World Series team, like Mike Stanton whose alleged “activity” wasn’t til 2003 when he was on the Mets (and is among the flimsiest of accusations and has been denied). Andy’s wasn’t til 2002. Our entire culture has been made worse by the internet. No one challenges the false statements. The Yankees should be filing suits against every one but they can’t even seem to control their own website.

They hate us the most because we’ve done it the longest. Also people hate New York. They think we are arrogant. One thing, it ain;t bragging if you can back it up. But lately we’ve had our share of failure and they can’t get enough of that.
Peter deleted the other post? lol
I agree that the hatred is more or less irrational. With similar irrationality, I really want the Yanks to destroy the league next year and steamroll their way to victory, if only to shut up Red Sox fans who are playing the “dynasty” card and predict a dominance that will rival the great Yankee teams of yore. Hardly!
It disappeared into thin air!
How stupid are redsox fans? They want the same thing we’ve had through the years. Isn’t that the definition of jealousy?
Pete, c’mon man, have some blogger integrity. Put an update in there saying “my bad” or something but don’t delete the post entirely.
And Boston absolutely has an inferiority complex. I believe this 100% even after they’ve had recent success. I’ve heard anecdotes of the Red Sox clinching the series and their fans starting a chant of “Yankees Suck!” around town and at the game. Could you ever imagine Yankee fans doing that? Seems like the height of absurdity.
dont anyone be fooled by the Sox troll “The Mick”
his post a little earlier (7:58pm):
“Picture this: it’s 5 years from now, aroid is nearing the HR record, Yanks haven’t won a WS since 2000, what do you do as a Yankee fan?
1. Cheer arod on
2. Boo him out of town
3. Jump on the redsox bandwagon after they win their 5th
straight WS?”
and I still haven;t gotten an intelligent answer bosox dave
Off topic, but just heard that Dan Fogelberg passed away at the age of 56 of prostate cancer. I love his music. His song “Longer” was my husband and my wedding song. Also at this time of year, his “Another Auld Lang Syne” is a personal favorite. His lyrics are poetry and wonderful vignettes.
Ouch, dood. Thanks for alerting me, Dave. Really don’t get the Sox trolls around here. If you’re a Sox fan and want to have a civil conversation, then let’s have at it, but why all the baiting? Some people must lead seriously boring/pathetic lives.
Who needs Mitchel? Can’t we go back to REAL journalism? Investigative journalism? Who cares if Britney is wearing panties? What happened to the days of Woodward and Bernstein?
A few good journalist who care about their work can blow the rest of the league wide open. It’s needed after this incomplete report.
alvaro
those yankee sucks chants are prob started by their college age nitwits. you don’t even hear that at the stadium anymore, people have grown tired of it.
Based on an e-mail, it appears I may have been punked by somebody with that URL. I took the post down just to make sure the Yankees don’t go looking to fire somebody. My bad. Too many Rolling Rocks today.
Doreen,
Sorry to hear that news. His sound was a little soft for my taste, but I respected him. He was a talented man and one of the best in that genre.
alvaro
Don’t listen to that voice behind the curtain, I am not a troll and have probably been a yankee fan twice as long as BOSTON dave’s been alive.
Here’s to ya Pete!
anyone with time to waste is free to read the Mick’s pro-Sox / anti-Yanks posts earlier tonight… why the charade?
i just didn’t know the rules set down in here by BOSTON dave were that you couldn’t criticize arod anymre since his latest mvp. things have certainly changed since the pre-mvp years. sorry i’m just about the winning and that I like the “boring” Jeter, who’s name is hardly mentioned in here anymore, over arod. How fickle can you be? Talk about the flavor of the month.
still no answer dave? and what were my pro sox posts?
yep just what i thought…
alvaro,
you shouldn’t be that gullible, listenin to that guy dave and all…and we had a decent conversation going and that troll broke it up.
BOSTON dave is a double agent!
The Yankees are both the most hated and most LOVED team in all of America (maybe all the world, but I know next to nothing about soccer.)It just goes with the territory. When you’re top gun people come gunning for you. The Red Sox have won two of the last few ’shoot outs,’ but their fan’s inferiority complex is such that they’re STILL gunning for the Yanks. After all, they know how far they have to go to reach 26 championships.
Only a few years back there was a poll commissioned by somebody (I believe it may have been Baseball Digest)which showed the Yankees as by far and away the most popular team in the U.S. I live in Europe and when you see folks wearing baseball caps, it’s almost always a Yankee hat. I had a few joking words with a guy in France sporting a Yankee cap the other day, and he not only knew who they were but said if he ever gets to the States, it’s his dream to see a Yankee baseball game – just because the Yankees’ name is magical and a well known icon of success. Perhaps only Manchester United can come close to that iconic status.
The other side of the coin is the hatred manifested by a lot of losers. I think most of us admire success even if we want to beat the team or person that’s successful. I admit I admire Beckett’s performance in 2007, but I want the Yanks to beat his butt good in 2008. Losers tend to simply be jealous of winners. Thus the hatred.
Sorry, it’s perhaps a simplistic view, but I don’t think this stuff is rocket science!
