If Joba gets caught? I’m pretty sure if he were using something he’d have been caught already… at least one would hope…

  5. vrsce December 21st, 2007 at 11:52 am

The comments above, illustrate the depth of mistrust that the steroid/hgh issue has provoked.

Fans now suspect everyone, even Joba. That is the sad legacy that the cheating players have left to the game and fans which have treated them so well.

All you have to do is look at Joba’s dad to know he’s not on anything. Genetics, people. He’s the spitting image of his father!

From the Journal News story, Joba commenting that he’s glad ARod and the other vest re-signed:

“I wouldn’t want to strike out Alex,” Chamberlain said with a wink, “and make him look bad.”

You have to love this kid. Perfect combination of humble and supremely confident.

  20. raymagnetic December 21st, 2007 at 12:17 pm

Best TV show is The Wire hands down.

  21. Chuck December 21st, 2007 at 12:20 pm

On a serious note, given the fact that their source lied to them, shouldn’t the LA Times reveal their source of erroneous information about the Grimsley Affidavit? Confidential sources should not expect confidentiality when their information is proven 100% inaccurate. Time for the Times to name names.

  22. Buddy Biancalana December 21st, 2007 at 12:31 pm

    Clare-

Dexter is awesome, did you like the season finale?

  23. Buddy Biancalana December 21st, 2007 at 12:34 pm

    TurnTwo-

Excellent point on the last thread about Johan being in the bullpen for his first few seasons, if the Yanks have 6 starters, why not start Joba in the pen at least for the beginning of the season.

  24. Anthony December 21st, 2007 at 12:37 pm

Has anybody seen SI.com today? They are running the Grimsley story and have him in a Yankee uniform as the picture. This is just unbelievable, the Yankees were a blip on the radar screen in this guy’s career, in which he played more years for each of Cleveland, the Royals, and Baltimore, yet he gets portrayed as a Yankee. Would it kill the national sports media to be a little less biased?

  25. Hooog December 21st, 2007 at 12:40 pm

Anthony: It’s all about the money. Yankees sell and the Indians do not. Do you think a cover story with Paul Byrd would sell?

    The Simpsons

Other than those, I don’t watch much television ;^)

  27. S.o.S.27 December 21st, 2007 at 12:57 pm

For those who like The Simpsons. Where does Family Guy rate vs. Simpsons?Just as funny?

  28. Matt December 21st, 2007 at 1:01 pm

Jeremy Affeldt or Trever Miller are the only remaining free agent lefthanders worth any consideration. Otherwise it’s Cashman with stonger than ever pursuit of Damaso Marte.
Any thought of Sean Henn or Chase Wright amounts to …OUCH !!

  29. swo December 21st, 2007 at 1:06 pm

Family Guy is funny, but the writing in the later episodes has gotten absolutely horrible. Most of the time they’re resorting to cliches and cheap shots at whatever is making news at the time.

Simpsons is an epic series. The writing is solid, and the jokes from even 15 years ago still make me laugh. The newer episodes aren’t as good as the old, but it’s tough to argue with 17-18 seasons, or however many there are.

  30. Yanksrule57 December 21st, 2007 at 1:10 pm

    S.O.S. 27

While I have long admired the Simpsons for the originality and wittiness of the writing, Family guy to me seems to try too often to be outrageous for outrageousness sake. It is crude, and often portrays the lowest common denominator type of comedy.

  31. youngtimer December 21st, 2007 at 1:11 pm

I like this kid. I love how he’s jumped right into the role of Yankee goodwill ambassador. Man I can’t wait until the season starts!

My only complaint about this would that this would be two years in a row that they’ve bounced him from starting to relieving. Then in mid season they bounce him back to a starter. That’s the worse thing they could do to a young pitcher, especially a power pitcher.

I completely agree. I’m so sorry though that this is the last season, and that they killed off Stringer Bell.

  39. Clare December 21st, 2007 at 1:26 pm

And as I’m apparently talking to myself, let me keep going because I left off one of my favorite shows – Battlestar Glactica. Not as consistently good as the Wire, but still a favorite.

Of the six pitchers, Joba’s the logical one to move to the bullpen with his proven effectiveness there. He’ll have to wait half a season, one season at the most. Of course if someone’s injured or ineffective it might not even be that long. Joba’s young and willing to do anything the team asks of him, so it’ll be fine. We need to trust Nardi Contreras and the Yankees. Joe G. must be giddy to work with the three young pitchers.

Joba needs to be in the rotation. You dont put a possible future ace of your team in the pen. If its an innings problem than I would start him off as a starter and give him some rest in the end of the season. This would be a waste of his talent. We need to go after a Natan or Street and keep him a starter. Mussina needs to be a long reliever/starter on occasions to spell the big 3. Im affraid if they do this for a second year he might lose his endurance to pitch more than an inning or two per game.

Olney again doesn’t know a damn thing about what the Yankees will do w/ Joba, to add insult he pencils in Wussina

Is anyone else still at work?

  59. S.o.S.27 December 21st, 2007 at 2:03 pm

Heres a thought. If the Yankees only delay in landing Santana is clearing some money(trading Matsui). Why not just trade Moose to Balt,Philly or Washington and keep Matsui on the team? I have a feeling that we will need Hedeki more this year than Mike. Giambi cant stay healthy for a whole year neither can Damon.

As far as Mussina having a n.t.c. He will waive it to start on another team and possibly get an extension.

Delcos still thinks the Yanks will get Santana: “Chamberlain should become a starter even if the Yankees acquire Johan Santana, because the right-hander has Clemens-like stuff.”

He also has Joba throwing 180 innings next year.

You wonder if these writers have heard something we haven’t. (Chances are: prolly.)

I understand all the innings limits after what’s happened to the likes of Prior, Wood, Liriano (sp?) etc. But how did all this get started?!

Why was it OK in 50′s and 60′s for power pitchers like Robin Roberts, Billy Pierce, Steve Carlton, Tom Seaver, Bob Gibson, etc. to come and start piling on the innings nearly straight away? Is there a problem with the way pitchers are trained today, are they over-conditioned physically, over muscled? Or was it the case that in those days there were a lot of injured pitchers who fell by the wayside and of whom we never heard?

    Thoughts anybody?

  77. rb15 December 21st, 2007 at 2:26 pm

jennifer – i’m still at work, and I actually have a ton of stuff to get done today. I would love to get out of here and get home (11-day weekend, and today’s my birthday!). 83. S.o.S.27 December 21st, 2007 at 2:31 pm

    Yanks61,
Some pitchers that pitched in the past and experts say that the more innings they pitch the more arm strength they build. I think the problem now is the pitchers are paid so much money and depended on to finish a year that orginizations take caution. Therefore looking at them as a big investment for now and the future, rather than a win now and worry about the future when it comes.

Did all of you that are Yankee season ticket holders get their invoices today?

It looks like the Yanks have played a trick on thse of us with Tier Reserved seats in Sections 1 through 18. My Section 2 Tier Reserved seats are now called “Tier Reserved MVP” seats. The only “Tier Reserved”sections are now 19 -36.

The bottom line is that my seats that cost $19 per game last year are now $27 this year. That’s a 30% increase!

    Hey Brian Cashman,

Don’t feed us anymore bull about not signing Johan Santana because you want to keep the costs down. We’re paying for him already!!!!

Your work actually CAN do itself! It’s amazing. All you need to do is put it in someone else’s in-box. Most of the time it’ll find its way back to you and it will be finished. Sometimes it doesn’t come back, but that doesn’t matter, it’s probably off working on itself.

    Robert DeNiro hands down.

  94. Brandon (Proud supporter of "ALEX BEING ALEX") & dammit SAVE HUGHES !!! December 21st, 2007 at 2:47 pm

    NO dammit he’s a catcher w/ upside!

Even after clubbing 30 doubles and 13 home runs in his first 127 professional games, the Yankees couldn’t find room for Gerardo Rodriguez and he headlines a list of 33 minor league players released by New York this week.

  95. GreenBeret7 December 21st, 2007 at 2:48 pm

Buddy, it’s not putting him in the bullpen that I’m talking about. It’s getting him ready to start in spring training, then shuttling him to the bullpen and putting him back in the rotation later. If they want to put him in the pen for a year or two, fine….but, leave him there all year. If they get ready to put him back in the rotation, then get him stretched out with some winter ball, instead of trying to do it during the spring with 3 innings here and there.

    Six Feet Under
    Lost
The Office (I’m gonna go both US and UK here)
    Arrested Development
4 way tie between Dexter, The Sopranos, Sports Night and Deadwood for my last spot.

Favorite thing to watch on TV are the NY Yankees though. I’ll tivo a TV show and watch the Yankees live 100 out of 100 times.

  98. Phil December 21st, 2007 at 2:52 pm

    DeNiro or Pacino?

    I’ll take Robert Duvall.

  99. Guy Incognito December 21st, 2007 at 2:54 pm

SOS, it’s been a long week. Also, I just saw some stills from that new movie with John C. Reilly, and Pam from “The Office” was wearing naught but a naughty nightie, and I guess I lost track of the day. Yama-hama.

  100. GreenBeret7 December 21st, 2007 at 2:56 pm

Yanks 61, Gil Hodges started the 5 man rotation in the early ’70s because of the injuries to Koosman, Gentry, Ryan and McAndrews. The pitch counts came in about the mid 70s, because of pitchers like Fydrich and a few others like Frank Tanana who were going down with arm problems. The cost of pitching was getting high, and that’s about the time that the big time relief pitchers were hitting the scene.

  101. mel December 21st, 2007 at 2:56 pm

I know they’re not all time greats, but who here didn’t enjoy Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, and Get Smart (they’re doing a movie soon)?

    Guy,
Go to lunch!! Will you go to lunch!!!Go to lunch!!lol
Quiz: what movie is that from?
It is a good excuse though.

  103. GreenBeret7 December 21st, 2007 at 3:00 pm

Mel, try picking up a copy of Pinkard And Bowdan doing their impression of Jimi Hendrix singing “Green Acres” to the tune of “Purple Haze”.

  104. Guy Incognito December 21st, 2007 at 3:04 pm

    Mel:

Get Smart was an all-time 60′s camp comedy hit. My favorite episode was “The Groovy Guru” with Larry Storch from “F Troop” as the guest star.

    Other excellent campy shows:
    -CHiPs
-Dragnet (late 60s version with Harry Morgan)
    -Captain Kangaroo
    -Remington Steele
    -”Laugh-In”

  105. yanks61 December 21st, 2007 at 3:04 pm

Mel, S.o.S 27 – thanks to you both. I see that both of you agree that it’s not that pitchers are any less pitchers, but rather the money involved, vis-a-vis their team’s investment.

Johnny Sain, a very good ex-pitcher and one time pitching guru/coach used to emphazine throwing and more throwng, as you mentioned S.o.S 27. I wonder, in fact, if the guys back in those days just threw a whole heck of lot more growing up, thus better preparing themselves, endurance-wise, just as Sain used to preach? Thus, too, the ones that did make it to the ML were the ones who hadn’t and wouldn’t break down – their arms tried and true!

Well, it’s good evening to you all. I’ll look forward to looking in on you tomorrow morning when you’re all most likely still sleeping – well, not all of you, I guess!

  106. Guy Incognito December 21st, 2007 at 3:06 pm

SOS, that’s John Williamson (Spacey) and George Aaronow (Arkin) from Glengarry Glen Ross. Great film.

Gossage doesnt seem happy about Clemens.

“If Roger cheated, what do the numbers mean? They mean nothing,” Gossage said by telephone on Thursday. “Roger has always been a production, everything he’s done has been a production. He’s always wanted the attention. He’s probably getting a lot more attention now than he ever wanted.”

  109. On D Ball December 21st, 2007 at 3:08 pm

It is not surprising that Schilling did not want to “rat out” his teammates when he knew they were using..

Even those who are unalterably opposed to illegal medicines and who know they are in widespread use, are in a catch 22 situation when it comes to tattling on a friend.

I don’t believe there are many people who would do it.

Accordingly I propose a special award to be given to anyone who claims they would “rat out” a friend in that situation. I propose we call it the SCHILLING SHILL award.

Of course, if Schilling was an honest man, he would have kept his mouth shut on Clemens. As some guy said, he doth protest too much.

  110. mel December 21st, 2007 at 3:10 pm

    GB7,

    WOW. Psychadelic, dude.

O/T, but since we were talking movies all week, I took my annual trip to Walmart yesterday. They had a lot of vids for $5. Picked up 61* and “The Doors” by Oliver Stone amongst others. Also, does anyone remember “Willow”?

Somebody better have the Doors on their all time bands list next week.

  111. raymagnetic December 21st, 2007 at 3:10 pm

Clare, I’ve been watching season 4 of the Wire on HBO Demand religiously this past week. I have to get seasons 1-3 on DVD at some point.

I’m also disappointed that they’re ending it this year, however if they don’t end it they’ll have to keep bringing in new actors. Nobody sells drugs forever.

  112. mel December 21st, 2007 at 3:16 pm

Found it. Get Smart to be released June 2008. Steve Carrell and Anne Hathaway. He’s perfect for the role.

  113. S.o.S.27 December 21st, 2007 at 3:17 pm

Which movie is better? Glen Gary Glen Ross or Boiler Room?

  114. GreenBeret7 December 21st, 2007 at 3:19 pm

Mel, those are two incredible buys. I picked up a complete set of “The Bronx Is Burning”. I hadn’t seen it, yet, except for a couple of shows. Got my popcorn for tonight. also picked up Season 1 and Season 2 of “McHale’s Navy”. classic stuff.

  115. Guy Incognito December 21st, 2007 at 3:21 pm

SOS, Glengarry wins hands down. “Boiler Room” was a cheap knockoff with terrible actors (yeah, I’m looking at you, Vin Diesel).

The real proof is that Boiler Room was a bloated two hours long while Glengarry Glen Ross was a tight, note-perfect 100 minutes.

  116. BONDS is a Cheater and so is CLEMENS December 21st, 2007 at 3:22 pm

I propose we call it the SCHILLING SHILL award.

So the first SHILLING SCHIL award goes to Andy Pettite for ratting out Roger Clemens.Right!

  117. S.o.S.27 December 21st, 2007 at 3:23 pm

Steve Carrell makes me laugh just looking at him. The Office is by far the funniest show out there. He sort of resembles the old get smart actor.

For you Lord of the Rings fans. They are making 2 prequals by 2011.THE HOBBIT. Cant wait for it.

  118. mel December 21st, 2007 at 3:30 pm

    sos,

Did you see last night’s episode? Michael’s playboy buddy had nipple chafing, so by the end of the 5K run, his jersey was bleeding. It was so gross, yet hilarious.

  119. S.o.S.27 December 21st, 2007 at 3:35 pm

Didnt get a chance to. Out with family looking at christmas lights.Thought i saw something like that about a month ago.

Happy Hollidays for the Fans that wont be here Monday.

  120. mel December 21st, 2007 at 3:36 pm

The government is so messed up. They can’t tell their right hand from their left. Personally, I would like Clemens to march his cowboy boots up to Capitol Hill and swear that he didn’t do steroids.

    Michelle Wie? Ick.

She says “like” every other word and fakes injuries, as well.

When will this phenom actually win a tournament?
