Big day in Foxboro

After watching on television all season, I finally got to see the mighty Patriots in person today and I was not disappointed as they laid a 28-7 thumping on the hapless Dolphins.

My brother-in-law Brian (that’s him in the Rodney Harrison jersey) cooked up some steak tips before the game. … Our end zone seats are pretty good. … There’s the scoreboard with the good news.

In terms of the football, I’m glad to see Lawrence Maroney putting two good games together. He could prove very important in the playoffs. It’s still crazy to me to see Randy Moss being such a good citizen. After his second TD catch today, I watched him on the sidelines and he shook hands with every lineman. He has taken a big drink of the Kraft Kool-Aid.

This may sound corny (and if so, so be it) but every newspaper beat writer should go to a game as a fan from time to time. You lose some perspective in the press box. It was good to sit in traffic, drink beer, watch a game and high-five total strangers.

Plus going to a game represents an opportunity to wear my John Hannah throwback jersey from Mitchell & Ness and not look like a fool.

Pats-Giants next week. I don’t think 16-0 is a lock but their defense should get after Eli Manning pretty well.

  4. BX 12 Fordham Rd.

Pete…were you hooked up to a Red Bull IV drip ? You look wired.

Giants with nothing to play for next week other than to become an answer to a trivia question will roll over and the Pats win by 20 or so…..

  5. SAndMan

Rodney Harrison used HGH Pete…Oh wait New England is a Boston team and you and every other Media person won’t care about that or report it so….Lets go Giants!!!!

  6. whatever

    Peter.. you traitor!

New England = Boston… why don’t you go follow the Red Sox or something… you should be ashamed.

  9. SAndMan

Did anyone see Ahmad Bradshaw (Ryan Grant who) ;)

but we need a new QB

  12. Peter Abraham

Please save all your “How can you root for the Patriots?” comments and other nonsense.

My father had Pats season tickets starting back in the early 60s. I started going to home games when I was 8 and didn’t miss a game until I went to college. I’m a Patriots fan, deal with it. It has nothing whatsoever to do with how I cover the Yankees.

SandSman there has been nothing to report but HGH lately. It’s the offseason, Mr. Wizard.

  13. sharp shooter

Pete on a Yankees blog do you think we care ANYTHING about any boston team, really!!! Stop it please.

  14. RangerRob

but they didn’t cover the spread pete!

  15. whatever

Peter.. the problem is on a Yankees blog your gloating about your new england patriots… this was wrong of you… what did you expect Yankees fans to say?

  16. cupaJOBA

    GO PATS BABY!!

Pete – Moss is such a team player, he’s always congratulating everyone. The chemistry they have now is amazing.

    Everybody, RUUUUUUUUN!!!!

  18. Peter Abraham

    Whatever:

I’m sorry, I don’t get the connection. Is there an official football team of the Yankees? I didn’t get that memo.

I post about personal stuff on my blog all the time. If that’s so upsetting to you, read something else I guess. Sorry.

  19. GRRRRRRRRR

Sorry, but I can’t stand the Patriots. What turned me totally off them is the arrogance they are showing. I usually like to see excellence in sports, and even if they aren’t my team, I can appreciate the winners for what they can do. Boston Red Sox and the Patriots along with many of their fans need to be taken down a few pegs.

  20. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers!

Pete, come on now, some of us are lowly Jets fans…

way tah rub it in :-P

  21. Angel

I guess “whatever” forgot whose blog it is, lol.

  22. YankeeJosh

Rebecca, tell me about it. Pats-Giants next week is like Red Sox-Mets to me. Can’t they both lose?

Let’s just hope for a good Jets draft this year.

  23. asburyboss

Pete…if your dad brought you to Schaeffer Stadium he should be reported to DSS.

Those that know, know…Pete is a PATS fan…and truth be told, he’s never rooted for the Yankees in his life- but so what?

in case anyone is wondering Lupica went to HS in Nashua, NH. uh oh…

  24. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers!

Eh, I’m not that bitter towards the Giants…just not a fan

  25. Faiaz

    Next Monday’s headline… “G-MEN SPOIL PERFECT PITTY-PAT PARTY”

  26. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

YankeeJosh Are you rooting for the Jets to lose next week? I’m torn, I want us to stomp the you know what out of Herm and his team, But I want us to get a higher draft pick.

  27. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

YankeeJosh Are you rooting for the Jets to lose next week? I’m torn, I want us to stomp the you know what out of Herm and his team, But I want us to get a higher draft pick.

  28. Faiaz

LOL on all honesty, many football fans that hate the Patriots made me finally understand why most non-Yankee fans hate the Yanks. JEALOUSY!

  29. Tom

I don’t understand the obsession with 16-0. That game next week means nothing, unless the Pats lose it. They have to win the superbowl to have an undefeated season, a la the 72 Fins.

BTW, the Giants will play that game like it’s preseason, expect the scrubs after the 1st quarter. Of course the Pats will win, lets just hope no one gets hurt… :-)

  30. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

    Geez look at this crap.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn.....mack/index

I wonder if they had one for the red soxs in 2003?

  31. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

Can’t figure out what to get a loved one for Christmas? Go here http://nycgarbage.com/  I just saw this on channel 2 news. I can’t believe anyone would actually buy this crap!! Ah honey thanks for the box of garbage, you shouldn’t have. I don’t know who is stupider (is that a word?) The people who buy it, or the one who sells it?

  32. YankeeJosh

Jennifer, I can’t root against the Jets. I’m bitter towards Herm too. However, if the Jets lose I’ll take comfort in the fact that it’ll lead to a better draft pick.

  33. Jacob Marley

    Rocket vs Mike Wallace!

I CAN”T wait for the chin music!!

  34. hughesian bias

i love the patriots! and why can’t pete cheer for the pats and the yankees? it’s not like you’ll see any pats vs. yanks games ever….

it’s horrible for someone to be a fan of 2 teams in the same sport, i.e. a yankees and mets fan (you know you’re out there!)

  35. li

Why it wrong to want Yankees-centered posts on a Yankees blog? Even in the off season. As baseball media,it is understandable you want a break, but for fans, baseball is our break.

As for Roger, I hope his 60 minutes stint turns me into a believer, but I doubt it.

  36. JT

Stay a fan Pete, it’s what you do best.

  37. JT

yeah and no one cares bout your love for the pats

  38. TEE JAY

pete, stay a fan…its what you do best

and no one cares bout your love for the pats

  39. Keith

    Pete,

If you didn’t do the best job blogging the Yanks, I would read something else because the Patriots stuff is REALLY annoying.

  40. SAndMan

Mr.Wizard…classic did a Boston fan tell you that. And there’s only HGH to report then why not report that Harrioson a HGH user is on a World Championship team and how wrong that is because no one said or like you reported or cared since there more evidence on Harrioson the Clemens on HGH yet you bash clemens.

How about the camera Clemens used for his statement is like the one the Patriots used to cheat on other teams and again there more evidence that the Patriots rather then Clemens on cheating in sports.

How about sportswriters like you never report how football players are suspened more then baseball players on steroids yet baseball players in sports.

Guess in ten years like it will be like the late 90’s in baseball, sportswriters will be forced to admit that football had a problem in the early 2000’s and they never really cared about it or reported anything at the time. Pete is bashing Clemens who there is no evidence of wrong doing or paper trail but roots for a team who were guilty of cheating more then the Clemens yet doesn’t say anything.

    Go Giants Hit Brady.

  41. Peter Abraham

    SandS man:

Your first post said I shouldn’t write about PEDs. Now, two hours later, I should be. Make up your mind.

Why would I have reported on Harrison? I cover the Yankees. He plays football. Can you grasp that?

As for your clumsy camera point, Jimmy Johnson and many other coaches have said that every NFL team uses cameras. The Patriots got caught and they paid the price. Move along.

I’m also not sure how I have “bashed” Clemens. Mentioning that his web site sells a t-=shirt that says “Tough All Day” is pointing out the irony.

I’m sorry I can’t spell out everything in short words. Try and keep up with the rest of the group.

  42. Mehdi thinks Bostondirtdogs are scum

    Arsenal 2 – 1 Tiny Totts

  43. Mr. GoodKat

    Ewwww….the Patriots.

They have a tough road in the playoffs. They’ll have to beat Jacksonville and presumably the Colts. Let them get their regular season glory though.

  44. SAndMan

    Pete-

Well now you say you cover the Yankees but two hours before you said you are a Pats Fan and so for everybody to deal with it even though this is a Yankees board…what does that have to do with the Yankees. And as you can see people tend to talk about other stuff like you about your Foxboro trip and that makes the Yankees site turned into a now Patroits site so lets talk how Harrison is HGH user and Clemens hasn’t been gulity of anything just I never heard of it since football gets away with everything.

And with the camera point should we move on with Bonds and say everybody cheats and move on.How can over 50 years of professional football and only one team gets caught and punished and we are to think every team does it as facts.Maybe most but hey to you Mariano,Jeter,O’Neil must be taking HGH because like Clemens everybody takes it.

  45. Astorian

“I’m sorry, I don’t get the connection. Is there an official football team of the Yankees? I didn’t get that memo.”

Pete – Try googling “Yankees suck chant” and “Patriots”, maybe then you’ll understand why a lot of Yankee fans aren’t so keen on the Pats.

  46. Bronxbyte

I agree with what Buck Foston said. It’s reached the depths of envy when goofy Patriots fans feel the need to holler “Yankees Suck” at a football game.
Clearly 2-digit I.Q.’s in their shining moments. New England’s legacy is the not knowing how to accept victorious moments.

  47. #9

“It was good to sit in traffic, drink beer…”

Pete – please don’t drink and drive!!

(Do what I do: guzzle at red lights)

  48. Born in da Bronx

I wonder why only athletes are singled out for testing. I think reporters and owners and politicians should be tested too. Think about it, the fate of our country in the hands of politicians and we have no idea what drugs or alcohol they are taking. Heck of a lot more dangerous than an athlete.

  49. Skippy

Not that anyone cares, but I lost my fantasy league championship because I was dumb enough to sit Laurence Maroney in favor of Adrian Peterson.

  50. wordshark

All things considered, it’s probably OK to be a Patriots and a Yankees fan. I’m a Yankees fan and a Giants fan, and my roommate is a Red Sox fan and a Giants fan… this gets kind of weird in October but is otherwise mostly OK. (Although I do have to punch him in the face sometimes.) Anyway, the “border” across different NY sports and Boston sports, I’ve noticed, is very blurry.

What should be more concerning to us is the Massachusetts Red Sox license plate in the background of the picture with Pete’s brother-in-law wearing the Harrison jersey. Pete might need to explain that.

  51. Yanksrule57

    Re The Pats Story,

All you frustrated Giants and Jets fans need to get over yourselves.
If you have read this blog for any length of time you would know Pete is a lifelong Pats fan. So what?

I’ve rooted for the Yanks my whole life, but moved to Fl as a teenager and became a Buccaneers fan in 1976 when they were established.

I very much am looking forward to the Giants coming in to Raymond James in two weeks. In fact my theme song for the next two weeks is from the 70’s group Three dog Night, “Eli’s coming”. The Tampa defense can’t wait to get at him.

  52. Kurt

    GO GIANTS

  53. Travis G.

has pete ever said which baseball team he is a fan of?

  54. hitman

it’s always been alarming to me that a yankees reporter is such a new england (boston) patriots fan.

  55. Laura

You are a PATS FAN, Pete? Jesus…

I thought you were a Yankee fan, and you can’t be a Yankee fan and love anything from BOSTON. As another poster here said, the “NEW ENGLAND” PATRIOTS = a BOSTON team, and anyone who loves the NY Yankees also hates anything related to Boston. Perhaps those of us who thought you loved the Yankees or at least were a fan were sadly mistaken.

And, nice jersey there, Brian. That guy (R. Harrison) used PEDs, but I guess, “who cares about that,” right? Why is it so different for the NFL than it is for the MLB?

  56. RVA Yanks

I don’t think it’s unreasonable for Pete to be a fan of another team outside of baseball that’s not based out of New York. It’s like how LeBron James went to this year’s ALDS with a Yankee hat on and Cleveland fans got up in arms. Really, who cares?

Unless this blog starts to resemble the unapologetic Boston bias that ESPN’s resident clown Bill Simmons puts in his blog, I’m all right.

*** However Pete, from football fan to football fan, I really hope my Giants put a hurting on your Pats. I realize we’re 12 point underdogs and Eli’s not exactly Mr. Clutch, but I seem to remember a Giants team fielding Kent Graham at QB and beating the then-juggernaut Denver Broncos, coming in at 13-0 (18-0 over two seasons) before the game, in Giants Stadium. Just food for thought.

  57. Onkel Bob

*The Edge Effect* is a geographic phenomenon that occurs when two or more populations meet. If there is a discrete enough difference, the interaction effects can be useful to answer many sociological and geographic questions. Connecticut has a strange mix of sports affiliations Yanks, Mets, Red Sox, Jets, Giants, Patriots, Knicks, Nets, and Celtics. All depends when you came to become a fan of the game. (Yanks, because I grew up in Bridgeport; Pats and Celtics from school in Storrs.)
Anecdotal evidence has the I-95 border between Red Sox and Yankee fans is somewhere near West Haven, CT. By East Haven it starts changing logarithmically to the power of 3 for Red Sox. Patriots are bit more problematic, they are more dispersed across the population then a concentrated into cohesive geographically restricted social groups.
The value of blogs is to hear/read/see a different viewpoint – especially from the moderator. Posters are good and all that, but when the blogger is a writing/research/journalism professional there are distinct advantages to reading that person’s posts.

  58. asburyboss

Pete…I see the “Red Sox” license plate on that Honda Ridgeline…are you a spy?

  59. Astorian

    “Arsenal 2 – 1 Tiny Totts”

    One club in London….

There’s only one club in London…

    One club in London….

    and they are…THE CFC!

  60. Spike Owen

I grew up in New Hampshire as a Yankee, Pats, Celtics and Bruins fan.

I used to shave “GO NY” in my head at Fenway when I was a kid. My walls had pinstripes and a big NY on it. Also, I have had Pats season tickets since 1993 and will be going to the AFC Championship this season in Foxboro. Don’t get on old Peter just because he doesn’t root for Eli or Mangina.

  61. Spike Owen

Although I must note, that I would be disappointed if Pete was indeed a Red Sox fan.

  62. YID ARMY! (RVA Yanks in disguise)

Astorian – I just got a shiny new Keane shirt for Christmas so I have to waiver some support for my THFC boys! Yes we lost the NL derby yet again, but Jamie O’Hara had a solid first match with us. If only Keane didn’t hit the damn crossbar.. or had his penalty saved..

    Come on you Spurs!

  63. YID ARMY! (RVA Yanks in disguise)

Spike Owen – I’ve never been to Fenway before but I am curious how rowdy Red Sox fans are with Yankee fans. Is it bad like if a Sox fan tried to sit in the right field bleachers at Yankee Stadium? Or are they just playful?

The last time I wore my Eli Manning jersey at FedEx Field when they played the Skins I had about 5 people threaten to kick my behind. That’s about the worst I’ve had it at a sporting event, rooting for the other team. (Nothing happened, those Skins fans were all talk. They called a guy with a L.T. jersey the n-word though, which was classless. Maybe it was just my section.)

  64. Spike Owen

    Yid Army-

Fenway can get bad. I remember getting heckled as a 10-year-old.

When I was in high school, I went with a friend to a Saturday afternoon Clemens-Pedro duel. All game, I had some non-friendly banter with some college kids behind us. Now I’m not stupid, I don’t go there looking for trouble (especially back then when the Yankees fans didn’t have to because they were so dominant), but they talk trash all game to Yanks fans. I think the score was 1-1, but it was the top of 9 and Soriano hit a solo homer. I stood up, didn’t say a word, and just started clapping. They all said they were gonna kick my ass after the game. Luckily there was a guy with a bald head, pinstriped cutoff jersey, and a tattoo of the facade around his monsterous arms. He told the kids to shut up, but that was the only time I felt like I was going to truly get my ass kicked at a game.

They talk a lot of trash, but usually wind up fighting each other. Also, my cousin was at the Pedro-Zimmer game, and said that after the game it was like a riot, fights everywhere. So it does get rough.

I’d compare it to a KC Chiefs fan in Oakland. Be prepared.

  65. small schools

pete, this is a new york blog and westchester (i.e. Tri-State) newspaper, if you and devaney wanna ask tom brady out for a date like the rest of america then get a job with the globe or the herald.

While writing about the Yankees (or the Mets, Knicks, Nets, Devils, Islanders or Rangers), you must always always always put the Jets and Giants at the top of your list of favorite teams, at least in public. I don’t care if Robert Kraft is your great-uncle, when you write about the Yankees, the New England Patriots should be the reincarnation of Jordan’s Bulls. Please come to your senses, and don’t ever wax poetic about Beantown and Boston sports again (unless it’s Boston College, where I go to school; but then again there’s as many kids there from greater NY as greater Boston, so it’s a different scenario).

  66. hughesian bias

    small schools,

i go to BC, too. but no matter who goes to bc, it still falls under the “boston sports team” umbrella. BC has been THE college team to follow in the boston area since forever.

    sorry, but you’re guilty, too.

  67. Spyder

Who really cares about the Patriots here in NY? Lets support the Giants and hopefully they can go further in the playoffs than the last two years.

  68. Chuck

The fun part will be when the Colts beat the Pats in the AFC Championship making any “undefeated regular season” just another sports asterisk…

  69. RVA Yanks

Spike Owen – Man I wish I had lived closer to New York when we were dominant (at the time of our late 90s dynasty I lived in San Francisco) but I went to a lot of A’s-Yanks games. Now A’s fans aren’t too bad, they’ll heckle you a bit and talk a little smack. No problem. Now if you were to stand up and say, rip on Giambi at the time he played with the A’s, they’d get in your face and get you to shut up. Mind you, I was also about 16 at the time.

I asked because one day I’d like to go up to Fenway and watch the Yankees play. I’ve never seen the Yanks play anyone else but the Orioles and A’s (I now live in Virginia) since they were the closest AL teams that played us to me.

  70. Weekly Journalist

“Who really cares about the Patriots here in NY?”

    Well, Jets fans for one.

  71. Spike Owen

    RVA Yanks-

Fenway’s not a bad place to be, really, because there are so many Yanks fans anyways. Try to get tix in the right field corner, that’s where all the Yankees fans are.
