When is Scott Proctor up for arbitration? Is there a "mercy" clause built in?

Mel -

I remember that story when it happened. The survival instinct is very strong. And you can't be judgmental unless you're ever in that situation. Like the man said, it's easy to say you wouldn't do it, but he was there and he knows not only did he do it, but so would most anyone.

I love Robbie Cano as a player and I agree that he has shown improvement and a willingness to work on his weaknesses each season. I also don't care if he ever hits more than 15-20 homeruns in a season. As long as he keeps going line-to-line, keeps those doubles coming, and takes a few more walks. I also agree about his improvement with men on base.

That makes no sense, Sammy. Are you proposing a six-man rotation? Teams don't use six-man rotations. And even if they did, there wouldn't be enough starts for all six starters to win 15 games realistically. Even in a five-man rotation the fifth man almost never wins 15 games because his starts get bumped when there are off days.

For those who worry about wins & losses or refs & umps, watch this Outside the Lines video. It really puts things in perspective and makes you grateful that everything you have. You'll think twice before complaining about what's on the dinner table. There's a line in there that'll have you thinking "Jorge" as soon as you hear it. Hint: it has to do with "toughening" the hands.

Out of the four, I truly believe that Cano and Wang will get hefty raises (they truly deserve it), and I would also make them commit to multi-year contract (4-5 yrs to start with). The other two will get raises also but not as much as they would expect. With Cano putting up the numbers he put up in 2006 and 2007 where he led all major league 2nd basemen in stats, I see no problem here. With Wang, the same thing... two and half years in majors with 10 wins in 2005 (half season), and 19 wins in both 2006 and 2007... these are staggering numbers of wins for a young pitcher in his first 2.5 yrs in the majors... his win to loss ratio is astounding. On another note, imagine him in 2008 with 20 wins and at least 15 each for Ian, Joba, Phil, Pettite and Mussina, you have 95 wins alone... I say the Yankees win 100+ games in 2008 enroute to a tight race with Boston for 1st place in AL East....

Spot on, mel. He showed flashes of increased patience at the plate this year. He just needs to make it a consistent habit.

Cano is just one player I think the retention of Kevin Long is going to pay dividends with.

Cano would have ocasional mental lapses on the basepaths under Torre. Joe Girardi will keep him mentally sharp.

I agree, Wolf. Once upon a time Cano never met a ball outside the strike zone he didn't like. And do you remember the old Cano with men on base? That's another area he really improved in.

Cano has improved every year. I see no reason why he won't continue that trend this year - especially with them pulling him out of winter ball so that he doesn't get worn out or aggravate that calf.

Yanks should sign Cano and Wang to long-term deals now. Offer them each 4 years/$40 million.
