Pete Why is this off season so boring? ? i think because a-rod already signed with the yankees
I’ve been busy with family affairs, naturally, but I wanted to wish Pete and the blog a Happy and Healthy New Year.
This offseason has been anything but boring starting with the emergence of Hank Steinbrenner, the Torre exit and Girardi entrance, the free agent re-signings, the Santana rumors and the ‘roids fiasco.
There’s a lull every year at this time with only an occasional move here and there and the arbitration process.
I know I’m about 3 threads late on this, but I really wanted to comment on Peter’s Patriots post. And no, I have no problem with Peter’s crowing about his football team. What bothered me was his statement about Brady and Jeter being classy and team-first.
Now, don’t get me wrong, they are both great players. However, I hate how the media decides certain people are “classy” or good guys, and everything they do is interpreted through that impression. While other players are “selfish” or not team players (i.e. ARod), and everything is interpreted negatively.
Now, I don’t know any of these players personally, but I’m willing to bet my house on the fact that they all have both good and bad characteristics. And, I believe any professional athlete has a level of selfishness and ego that would offend most people. But once the media decides someone is a good guy, they get a pass on any bad behavior. For example, classy Jeter couldn’t be bothered to support ARod in 2006, or Torre in 2007. However, that’s not enough to dent Jeter’s media-created team-first persona. And, as previously discussed, Brady’s baby situation would be reported much differently with another player.
I know Peter and others in the media like to think they’re objective. However, until they can avoid seeing and reporting on athletes through pre-determined labels, their claims to objectivity are pretty hollow.
Clare-
I think Brady gets a bad rap for being an absentee dad. It’s not like he’s Jamie Lynn Spears or K-Fed.
I think what makes it boring to a lot of people is that there are no big splashes with trades or FA signings, which the Yankees have always been in the thick of. Personally, I find it refreshing that the times have changed.
The excitement now comes from having a loaded farm system with players who we can anticipate making contributions, a new manager and coaches, and seeing Cashman’s youth plan hit full stride. I’m stoked about the upcoming year.
Good post, Clare—though overall I do think Peter has done a very good job here as a voice of objectivity.
As a fan, I judge character, class and likeability based on effort and “doing the right thing.” I never boo anyone who measures up on these criteria.
The only time I’ve ever been critical of Jeter was his failure as captain to speak up and take some heat off of A-Rod. I thought Jeter’s shoulders were broad enough to rise above a long-ago Alex mistake, and I was a bit disappointed that he didn’t. Other than that small act of omission, Jeter has been all you could ever want from a team captain, and much more.
In terms of career performance, Brady is higher than Jeter in his sport’s pantheon of greats (think Lou Gehrig in terms of leadership/performance value). But this is a NY blog, so I think Peter’s comparison was especially well chosen.
A-Rod’s first classy moment as a Yankee came when he, arguably the best-fielding shortstop in the AL, agreed to play 3B. He did not get a pay increase to do so.
When I think of class, I think first of Joe DiMaggio. He was before my time, so that’s all storybook stuff. To me, the term “class,” when referring to an athlete, deals also with how he plays the game. I think Jeter is classy in that respect no matter how many actresses he infects.
Class? Tino, Scotty, Chuck, Paulie, Bernie, They epitomize it for me.
its obvious people think a-rod is more of a better player then jeter and has the ability to do things dat jeter can’t
jeter is good in baseball and wuteva but nuthin compared to a-rod.
Every sports figure in every sport in under the microscope anymore. On or off the field, everything is magnifield, glorified, and in many cases taken out of context. The fans absolutely must know every possible thing about their teams of choice from the front office right down to the equipment managers even if it isn’t true.

Some good info on our prospects.
jen—thanks for the link! You catch the Jets game today?
Unfortunatley yes I did.
Hehe, I just caught the end, was out watching Sweeney Todd!
Steve you would think.
Now they pick 6th
I don’t think it was a total loss…. They did beat Herm’s team. Maybe the 4 spots were actually worth it. And you know Herm was into it…. Calling those timeouts before both of Nugent’s attempts.
It was Herm being Herm. Wasting timeouts, clock management.
Don’t I know it. Glad we beat him. Sad we lost the spots
Steve—You do know this is the Jets we’re talking about, right?
I saw somewhere that the Jets pick 4th? Anyone know is it 4th or 6th?
http://www.nfl.com/standings?category=league&season=2007-REG&split=Overall
Looks like 4th?
The SVU episode I am watching was written by Jose Molina. No joke.
It’s a good question.
I think the Jets need to draft a defense first, then worry about the offense…though the defense has been playing a lot better since Vilma got hurt, which is weird.
I think I would get a QB as well. (I’m not too familar with college qb’s) I know we need a left guard, but I’m sure you can get that later in the draft.
Maybe we can get Quinn in a trade since Anderson did very well for them this year?
Rebecca still with the d? Our O line stunk this year!
Jenn: True!
We won’t get Quinn, not with the Browns playing as well as they did.
Rebecca,
I hope that you are going to be one of the guest host bloggers on here next month!
Jenn—True! I didn’t even think of that!
But Derek Anderson did very well for them, they have no need for Quinn.
Yupp Rebecca this is the guy…

Bummer. We really were hoping we would be selected, and put a really great effort in. I guess it was first come first serve?
Now I feel MUCH better about the NFL season.
#6 pick for Gang Green
Lovely work that win did for us
If the jets pick a QB in the 1st round next year it will be a waste we can go next year with either Pennington or Clemens what the jets need is a great defensive player .
I read an article at the advocat it said Patriots go all the way china wins the most medals in the olympics AND The Yankees WIN the World Series that’s what they are predicting for 2008. Do you agree?
Joe—Those predictions sound very possible, especially with the Olympics. Host nations usually perform remarkably well…look for China to succeed in gymnastics and swimming and diving especially.
Steve—I don’t know football well enough to give you an answer on that.
FYI, this is the REAL Steve Lombardi – and, all the posts above this one were not made by me. Someone is using my name and URL and making posts.
Please ignore any of these false posts in between the time they are posted and the time it takes to remove them. You should not waste any time from your day being concerned with this individual’s attempt at pleasing themselves at my expense.
this site would be 1000 X’s improved with registration.
that is just my opinion.
Well, we didn’t make Pete’s cut this time, but here is what we wrote to him… Maybe someone else will want to check out the blog?
Peter,
It is very generous of you to allow guest bloggers on a site that has become the industry standard for beat writer blogs. Many bloggers would hoard this kind of attention only for themselves but it seems that you want to give back to the little guys. We would like to post an entry or two to gain some exposure for our humble little site: http://www.nyystadiuminsider.com with its very own forum at http://nyystadiuminsider.yuku.com.
I think NYY Stadium Insider would be a good candidate to participate in your guest blogging for a few reasons.
First, I understand the blog’s style. It doesn’t take itself too seriously but yet provides valuable information at the same time. It offers the facts that can only be attained by hard journalism but also contains the opinion of the writer for readers to agree/disagree with. Most of all, it is meant for entertainment of the reader.
Second, the writers at NYY Stadium Insider possess the necessary wit in their writing to keep readers laughing and entertained. I’ll give you an example of some of the short comedic writing we have done on the Yankees:
Before you made the post predicting the future the other day, one of the contributors to the blog made a post wondering what would happen if he slept for the next three months and woke up in March:
As January rolls along it is time for the serious baseball fan to take a three-month nap. But what would one see upon waking up? My crystal ball knows.
-Johan Santana will be a Yankee. Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera, and a prospect will not be a Yankee.
-Brian Cashman will look more pale, tired, and dejected than normal.
-Hank will ride Cashman to work every morning.
-Jamie Lyne Spears will be three months pregnant. She will already have lost custody of the child still growing in her womb. The real father will be revealed as R. Kelly.
-The two frontrunner’s of both political parties will be spewing pounds of bull out of their mouths like usual. Hillary will be attacked from the right for not serving in Vietnam even though she is a woman. It will be discovered that she is not a woman but in reality an unfeeling robot of doom. Bill will buy old magazines containing pictures of Jamie Lynne Spears.
-Curt Schilling will have made 40 more blog posts. Unbelievably and inconceivably to the human mind each one will be more pompous and self-righteous than the last. In his final post he will declare himself God and will claim to have cured ALS single-handedly.
-The Marlins will say the hell with it and have another fire sale. Of their top AAA players. They will have single-A teams with 70 man rosters all building up for 2035.
-All the midges in Cleveland that faithful night will have completed their short life cycle. Thank God.
-Derek Jeter will have slept with more women in those three months this entire site has in their lifetimes.
-He also will have contracted all 174 varieties of herpes.
-Clay Buchholz will plan the Ocean’s Elevens’s style heist of Dell Computers Inc.

The above entry was just something special post-winter meetings when nothing was going on. During the season it is mostly interesting and strange observations going to the stadium day in and day out as a season ticket holder. Feel free to peruse the blog at your leisure to check out some old posts. Again that’s http://www.nyystadiuminsider.com. Apart from the witty nature of some NYY Stadium Insider posts, all contributors to the site possess the writing skills necessary to hold up to the standards of your blog.
In addition to running the blog, NYY Stadium Insider runs new, but already successful forums at http://nyystadiuminsider.yuku.com. This shows just how serious we are about giving users good content and displays our loyal base of readers/contributors. We would be honored if you would stop by and register to say hello.
If you enjoy Photoshop humor, you can view this thread on the forum of Yankee Photoshop work that the writers of NYYStadiumInsider.com have made (this is all original work) : http://nyystadiuminsider.yuku.com/topic/420?page=1
Finally let me say that it would be an honor for NYY Stadium Insider to be allowed to post on your site. There are many blogs out on the interwebs and we hear at NYY Stadium Insider truly believe that yours has the best access and is the best written. I hope you will consider our writing team for a guest spot.
