"There are no indications that the Yankees will suddenly get back into the mix for Johan Santana."

The Tampa Post-Star: Steinbrenner would still like Yankees to trade for Santana

Fox Sports.com: Steinbrenner 'leaning towards' Santana deal

The Associated Press: Yankees still ready to deal for Santana

USA Today: Steinbrenner 'still leaning' toward making pitch for Santana

And the author of this blog is STILL emailing me about how he was right... Boy, if only there were SOME "indications"... :-/

I'd like to chime back in regarding my comment left about keeping the kids. I respect NFresh and larry's opinions, but have to inturn disagree. Santana is an extremely impressive talent. More than likely the best lefty in the game right now. However, he has logged four straight seasons of 200+ innings, two of which he passed 230 innings. His walks and HR's allowed have gone up each of the last three seasons. KEEP IN MIND, the Yanks are simply trading for the rights to negociate with Mr. Santana. You will give up Melky Cabrera (.280 AVG., 16 OF Assists), Philip Hughes who you must admit, is the closest thing to a sure bet as a legit #2 and possibly an Ace #1. Think of how much money the Yanks save working with these kids. Think of the chemistry that will be maintained as Cano plays with his best friend Melky. Hughes continues to progress through the organization he's dreamed of playing for. Now let's talk about the cost. The Yanks would get hammered with the luxery tax on this one. They will shell out 140 MIL. over 7 years, but pay far more once lux. tax is accounted for. In my opinion, this is exactly why I find there to be ZERO chance the Red Sox land him. They're not going to increase THEIR Lux. Tax and then turn around in a year or so and have to increase it even more when they resign Beckett. Remember how much they shelled out for Dice K as well. I think Franklin is going in the right direction with his blog. I enjoy reading all of your comments. It makes me look at things from different angles, however, I still think we should keep the homegrown talent and reap the rewards in 2-3 years.

http://news.bostonherald.com/sports/baseball/red_sox/view.bg?articleid=1064546

A story today in the Boston Herald about the story that appeared in the NY Daily News...

What is WRONG with these people???

I mean, hey, it's just Hank Steinbrenner saying, among other things, that "The Yankees have the best offer on the table"...

...and it's just a story about how the Yankees still have their eyes on Santana.

Why don't ESPN.com, MLB.com, SI.com, the New York Daily-News, Peter Gammons, and now the Boston Herald realize that those things are "no indication" that the Yankees are involved in the Johan Santana discussion????

Silly 5 major news outlets and Hall of Fame reporter.

Kevin Brown was 39 when the Yankees acquired him...

Randy Johnson was 41 when the Yankees acquired him...

THAT is why there is no comparison between the Yankees acquiring those two and a potential trade for Santana now.

LARRY..... I dont where you get your Facts FROM but Guidry was drafted by New York not Acquired from another team and as for you saying comparing Brown and Johnson to Santana is ridiculous. how is it ridiculous you cant compare Johan to those two unless his career was over so lets compare the 2 to Johan's age right now soon to be a 29 yr old with career stats of 93-44 3.22 era when Brown was 29 he was 80-50 3.42 era,now thats comparable as for Johnson at age 29 he was 110-70 3.60 & from age 30-present he is 174-80 2.80 era 3,000 K'S now if thats not comparable i dont know what is, Johan needs to avg 20 wins for the next 11 years just to be in the same room as the Unit.now its possible it could happen but he needs to be absolute perfect for the next 10-12 years injury free of his career to do it, so if your gonna talk comparison do it the right way or dont make a comment that is nonsense

Peter Gammons appears to believe the Yankees are not only still IN the Santana Sweepstakes, but perhaps that they have never been OUT of it.

Gammons: "I think Hank Steinbrenner would trade for Santana but only at the cost that was offered a month ago."

And note that Gammons said HANK STEINBRENNER (you know, the guy who gave all the quotes for the story) would be the one who makes the trade... Not the Yankees, not Cashman, and not Hal.

In addition, in the hours since the Daily News story hit the streets, no less than MLB.com, ESPN.com, and SI.com have all thought the report was worthy of writing their own stories.

Call me crazy, those would seem to qualify as "indications" - damned strong indications, in fact - that the Yankees ARE involved.

But, perhaps Peter Gammons, ESPN.com, MLB.com, SI.com, Hank Steinbrenner, and the New York Daily-News don't have don't have as many quality sources as the author of this blog. :-/

To compare a soon-to-be 29 Santana to Brown and Johnson is ridiculous... Under normal circumstances, I agree with the keep the kids theory... In fact, wrote something on http://yankeesnmore.blogspot.com/ about Santana being the only guy I would even CONSIDER dealing Hughes for... Dan Haren (now gone to Arizona)??? NOT A CHANCE!

Santana is the best pitcher in the game and still in his prime. This would be more like when the Yankees acquired Ron Guidy than anything else.

And not to be a complete party pooper on the previous post, but the Yankees DID get SOMETHING back when they dealt Alfonso Soriano... I don't think I want a do-over on THAT one.

The thing with the Yankees and Johan is Years & Money,How many True # 1's ever got as many years and money as Johan is looking for in modern era, really no one except for ZITO who in his 1st year in S.F didnt look like a ACE,then there was Kevin Brown a 6 year 100 million dollar bust and then you have arguments about Mussina who in 2001 was considered one of the Best Aces in the game who was 140-57 with a 3.16 era at the time he signed a 6-7 year deal with New York for just under 100 mill and what did he do, he went 95-65 with a 4.25 era, now he averaged 15 wins a year with New York but was his contract (DOLLARS) worth it in the long run.I'll put 4 pitchers right now in the class of Johan, that contracts either new deals (this year) or exsisting contracts with none over 4 years J.Peavy 3 yrs this year,R.Oswalt 4 yrs this year J,Beckett 3 yrs C.Zambrano 4 yrs. So my point is having a guy like Johan Santana would be no doubt a huge uplift in pitching but committing that kind of Money & Years is no guarantee you would get your monies worth,if Johan was looking for a 4 yr deal the yanks would have had him 2 months ago. i think the Yanks dont wanna give 140 mill and possibly have him get hurt and end up like a PAVANO 19 starts 5 wins which he recieved $9 Million for each win (his contract)

Randy Johnson, Kevin Brown, Carl Pavano, Hideki Irabu, Javier Vasquez deals. Or maybe it could be as money as the Jimmy Key, David Cone, Jon Leiber
----------------

Johan Santana is nothing like those players. Johnson and Brown were old; Pavano had one good year; Irabu was a speculative move on a player that never pitched in MLB. Santana is um, Santana. The guy had an off year and he was in the top ten in every major stat category. He's never been injured. He's a lock for 200 innings. Trading Hughes to the Twins for Santana makes sense. Plus, if he is the next coming of the Rocket, the Twins will be looking to trade him in 4 years for the same reason as Johan.
