Letterman returns, now with beard

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jan 02, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

David Letterman is back on television with a white beard. He looks like a skinny Burl Ives. Jay Leno is back as well. But I never watched him when he had writers, so what would be the point now?

Dave, as always, is great.

Robin Williams is his first guest. Called Dave “General Lee.” Hilarious.

Quick Robin Williams story. Back in 2002, I was a backup writer on the Yankees and Mets and covered a game at the Stadium. I get in the elevator to go up to the press box and when it stops at the lobby, Billy Crystal and Robin Williams get on.

I don’t say a word. Billy looks at my credential and says “Ah, Westchester” and says something about Joe Torre living there. Having no idea what to say, I come back by telling him I liked Princess Bride.

There’s a few seconds of silence and Robin says, “So, what, you liked nothing I did?”

We all cracked up.

UPDATE, 12:39 a.m.: Conan had a beard, too. It’s like the Notre Dame mascot has his own show.

Forget both of those guys. Conan is the future king, so you better start watching him.

    Stewart and Colbert.

  5. Jack spring January 3rd, 2008 at 12:31 am

Thanks Pete maybe they should just show films

  6. Whoever January 3rd, 2008 at 12:34 am

Show films ? Nah . Show some more reality shows

  7. Greg January 3rd, 2008 at 12:35 am

I love Conan. Not a Letterman or Leno fan. Indifferent to Kimmel, but Stewart/Colbert are amazing.

Looks like Sox could be expanding deal for Santana? I don’t know, seems like speculation at this point.

    Conan has a beard too.

Letterman is the man like Carson was before him so give the man his due. Conan, John Stewart and so on look to him. It’s a natural progression. Leno is Spam. Leno is Carrot Top to Lettermans Lenny Bruce.

  10. Wolf In Pinstripes January 3rd, 2008 at 12:47 am

I grew up on Carson, got addicted to Letterman (on NBC) in college, and I actually like Conan ok. I just don’t watch late-night talk shows anymore for some reason. Leno – I liked him when he was a young guest of Johnny’s. Once he took over, he turned to pure crap.

Pete, OMG, you’re a Princess Bride fan?!

My name is Inigo Montoya! You killed my father! Prepare to die!

  12. Bob January 3rd, 2008 at 12:53 am

The world feels right again….Letterman is back. lol

I kept thinking he looked like a skinny Jerry Garcia with the beard.

  13. Show it January 3rd, 2008 at 12:56 am

Is there going to be a golden globes this year?

  14. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! January 3rd, 2008 at 12:58 am

Yes, but we don’t know if it’s with or without writers yet

  15. Stewman23 January 3rd, 2008 at 12:58 am

    Rebecca

    Stop saying that!

“It’s like the Notre Dame mascot has his own show.”

    Gold, Jerry!

  17. GuidryBall January 3rd, 2008 at 1:22 am

You forget how accustomed to shows once the writers disappear for a few months.

  18. GuidryBall January 3rd, 2008 at 1:23 am

    *you get

i missed letterman but agree with pete that letterman is a much better option to watch late night than leno. but i did catch conan and his beard looked fake, its real but adds to his funny character. but he is a sox fan, so he cant be king of late night

  20. GuidryBall January 3rd, 2008 at 2:07 am

I agree, Letterman is by far the best. He’s got good timing and lets the guests talk. Jay Leno’s high pitched interrupting is nauseating and just as uncomfortable for the guests. One gripe: Paul Schafer is the weirdest human being alive.

  21. Seth January 3rd, 2008 at 3:46 am

Letterman and Conan for me; they both are absolutely hilarious…

And how good was Robin Williams… You dont want to laugh, because he’s going so fast, you’ll miss a joke!

  22. Tseng January 3rd, 2008 at 5:12 am

I don’t think I’ve liked anything Robin Williams has done other than Dead Poet’s Society and even then I didn’t like his acting.

  23. Tseng January 3rd, 2008 at 5:29 am

    Oh Aladdin was good too.

  24. Doreen January 3rd, 2008 at 8:05 am

The Genie in Aladdin was nothing short of amazing.

Pete, liked your story. If Billy Crystal hadn’t said anything, would you have said anything? I know I would not have. But it’s like the elephant in the room: you know who they are; they know that you know who they are. How nice of Billy C. to break the ice and Robin Williams – priceless!

  25. Phil January 3rd, 2008 at 8:12 am

    Great story, Pete!

When Letterman hit the stage last night, all I could think of was that he’d aged overnight and turned into Colonel Sanders.

Leno was an absolute riot when he’d appear as a guest on Dave’s NBC show. He was one of the best guests and Dave had him in every six weeks on a steady rotation.

  26. Alfred E. Neuman January 3rd, 2008 at 8:26 am

I agree with Buck Foston when he says late night show threads have no place on a baseball blog.

  27. Catya January 3rd, 2008 at 9:05 am

If I’m not mistaken Conan is a Harvard grad not Notre Dame
Pete.I remember reading that when he was a writer for SNL
before he got his now show.

  28. Bill Porter January 3rd, 2008 at 9:10 am

My best friend is a SWG member and writer for a show in LA. Other than Letterman those clowns can go pound sand for all I care strike busting scabs that they are. Anyone who is a member of a union who watches those programs should turn their card in.

  29. whozat January 3rd, 2008 at 10:38 am

“If I’m not mistaken Conan is a Harvard grad not Notre Dame”

he is a Harvard grad, but give him a beard and he looks just like the iconic Fighting Irishman.

  30. Max Fischer January 3rd, 2008 at 10:55 am

Craig Ferguson is the funniest late-night host now. Letterman and Leno are shadows of their former selves these days.

  31. saucy January 3rd, 2008 at 11:29 am

nice story pete. But it’s Billy Crystal and Robin Williams, not Pacino and DeNiro or Jagger and Springsteen…. (kidding of course)

i probably would have mentioned Mork and Mindy if i were in a similar situation…

glad to see it seems like the majority like Letterman, then Conan, then Leno. (did anyone admit to liking Leno best?). Stewart and Colbert can be funny, but to me that’s a totally different type of show/format…

  32. Yanksrule57 January 3rd, 2008 at 11:48 am

I met Robin Williams in Morocco of all places. He visited my ship (USS Tortuga) and went aqround to all the spaces meeting the crew and making everyone LTAO. I had my camera crew follow him around (One of my jobs was to run the ship’s TV Station)and we played the tape several times over the next few months to help get us through our 6 month deployment. He will always be a great guy IMO.

  33. MeYanksfan January 3rd, 2008 at 12:25 pm

    Billy – settle down…

From what I’ve read they contract they agreed to (Letterman’s writers) is the exact deal the writers union has been trying to get through. Also, it appears that the union gave them their blessing to work for Letterman.

  34. Dint January 3rd, 2008 at 12:48 pm

I like Conan, then Leno, then Letterman, then Kimmel, and I hate Daly and Ferguson.

If we’re including Colbert and Stewart then Stewart would be between Conan and Leno and Colbert after Leno.

    There, I said it.

  35. Bill Porter January 3rd, 2008 at 2:20 pm

    MYF

I understand that. That deal has been in the works for a while, that’s why I wrote “Other than Letterman …”

  36. YankeesLuv January 3rd, 2008 at 5:04 pm

I agree with you about Letterman Pete. He’s awesome, Leno is not that funny.

  37. pat m in ct January 3rd, 2008 at 7:44 pm

Love Letterman. Prefer the routines on Conan’s show to Conan himself. Leno was much much funnier before he got the Carson gig and was always worth watching when he showed up on Letterman’s show way back when.

  38. MeYanksFan January 4th, 2008 at 7:08 pm

Sorry Billy, I missed that part….
