I think DJ could hold down SS for another 8 years. At that point, my son will be 18 and ready to step in. If not him, my younger boy is 2 years on his trail. 2016 will be the year DJ give up SS for Shane's Son.

thanks for the link. it was interesting, but it says ,"our raw data is from baseball info systems".

baseball info systems is just john dewan, bill james , and a whole crew of intern like sabermetricians . dewan has a major problem with bias. he uses "official scorers" for every ball in play who are likely unpaid interns . all it takes is judging a few balls here and a few ball there as easier hit and jeter comes out looking like crap.

the unknown "official scorers" probably share dewans preconceived notion than jeter sucks so it's easy to judge the difficulty of play in a way that proves the bias.
you can't deny the "scorer" knows who the player is. that's a major flaw in the system.
another flaw is it doesn't measure the actual starting point of the fielder.

i'm sure the system gives some useful info when dewan and his interns don't dislike the player from the beginning of the process. that however is not the case with jeter.

put a gps chip in the ball and on the fielder taking the subjective"official scorers" out of the process and you might have something. until then , i'll go by impartial managers and coaches who have spent their lives playing the game.

to be continued ,i'm sure.

the sabermetric stats for defense are so unproven; i'm not chapter-and-verse on them all, but the ones i've seen all oversimplify. if i remember correctly, these type of stats would also argue that Robbie Alomar was a poor 2B, which is ludicrous. defense is challenging because there are so many variables. it's good that sabermetrics is trying to work something out, but it's not there yet IMO.

i'll trust my eyes to some degree here, as the defensive metrics are still relatively immature. So: Jeter is poor to his left, is good to his right, excellent on slow rollers, excellent on popup in LF - a big deal in Yankee Stadium, good on DPs. Strong arm, though not a great arm because he's not always accurate. he's got baseball intelligence, which sometimes comes into play on defense, the 2001 flip pass being the most prominent example.

i don't feel qualified to judge his positioning, which obviously is important.

that being said, since he's getting older, it would seem that the Yanks will want to move him to a different position at some point.

randy l.,

No fielding statistic is perfect. That is why I included MGL's UZR, Dewan's +/-, and Inaz's Fielding Translations. They all approach quantifying fielding in a different way and all arrive at the same conclusion.

If you're still not convinced, check out Wharton Professor Shane Jensen's SAFE system. His metric has Jeter as the very worst fielder in all of MLB, any position, over the 2002-2005 seasons.

It is not a matter of opinion. Luckily for Jeter, Hanley Ramirez got the call up and hasn't been moved to CF yet, so he might only be the 2nd worst defensive SS in MLB currently. But there is no denying that he is a terrible fielder.

According to Earl Ward, they weren't there when Hardin's investigators questioned McNamee. Why the guy would talk without the attorney there is beyond me. Apparently, Ward was PO'd at McNamee about it. Not sure if you heard on that tape where McNamee said he was pissed at his attorneys and was thinking about firing them, although, I think that was part of the setup.

Further evidence that George is not lucid:

<blockquote>"He's a terrific commissioner, and he's doing the right thing in trying to clean up the sport," Yankees owner George Steinbrenner said through spokesman Howard Rubenstein. "I am fully supporting him."</blockquote>

My pleasure Blargh. The more that comes out about this guy from all different sources, the more you have to wonder what Mitcvhell was thinking when he didn't bother to cross check things for verification. I've counted at least ten lies by McNamee, or, at least ten times that somebody other than Clemens denies were false.

blargh-
point 27 where mcnamee is describing the interrogation is the part that raises eyebrows. it really sounds like they are guiding mcnamee to say what they want which may be a lie.

this section seems to be from the tape that mcnamee's lawyer wants and clemen's lawyer hardin won't give up until he has to. right now mcnamee's lawyer and the feds don't know what else is on the tape. i would think it kind of muzzles them until they hear what is on it.
