Spring-training roster update

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jan 15, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

In response to several e-mails:

1B Juan Miranda and C Francisco Cervelli are on the 40-man roster and did not have to be invited to spring training.

Interesting that the Yankees will have two 19-year-olds (Austin Romine and Jose Tabata) and an 18-year-old (Jesus Montero) in camp. I’m looking forward to seeing them along with Dan McCutchen and Mark Melancon.

Guess J.B. Cox is still serving his time.

————

He may be a Cubs fan, but Dr. David Yung knows how to fix a sick blogger. The good doctor hooked me up with some codeine cough syrup and some other medicine. So far, so good. I’m still a mess, but less of a mess than I was.

A few teaspoons of delicious codeine somehow made today’s Congressional hearings almost amusing. Between naps, I didn’t hear much I didn’t know before. It was interesting to see Randy Levine of the Yankees sitting behind the Commish.

To me, the whole thing was grandstanding by the committee. Sorry, but I don’t rank the actions of Miggy Tejada among the pressing concerns of our nation and its lawmakers.

Yes, steroids are bad. We all get it.

    Hey Pete

It looks like that codeine cough syrup helped you watch the hearings and write this post. Does that make it a “performance enhancing drug?” You are cheating the other bloggers and columnists out there who cant take drugs to get them over a cold. I think this calls for a Congressional Oversight Committee.

  2. mel January 15th, 2008 at 8:09 pm

Glad you’re feeling better, Pete. Don’t mix the syrup with the Red Bull.

I’m still shaking my head that Mitchell believes that it’s o.k. to use the players in the report as scapegoats. My point is it should be all or nothing. Obviously one is more fair than the other.

  3. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! January 15th, 2008 at 8:13 pm

Glad you’re feeling better! Also glad you’re not an olympic gymnast (see Romania, 2000, Sydney, women)

  4. jay destro January 15th, 2008 at 8:26 pm

Pete… we think a lot alike. Please come by http://www.thebaseballoutsider.com to see me babble on about the government and tejada.

  5. mel January 15th, 2008 at 8:29 pm

    Boston Dave,

Try to keep up with the new threads. :) (If you’re reading it then you’ve caught up).

I was totally geeked by that article because I’m fascinated by media’s influence and it brought up a lot of good points. ESPN has a lot of conflicts of interests, but like the writer pointed out they can only be managed.

Looking towards the future, ESPN ownership in NBA China will be interesting because as far as I know it’s a sports network owning a sports entity. What if the Chinese players use steroids? How will they deal with the reporting of such?

I’m in no way an ESPN basher, but it was an honest evaluation that most Yankee fans would enjoy.

  6. Boston Dave January 15th, 2008 at 8:30 pm

    Pete,

Any chance you or SJ44 will be providing a minor league pitching report before pitchers and catchers report next month? I think that’s when it would be most useful/interesting to read.

If not, is there a guest blogger who could possibly do a write up?

    thanks.

  7. Lori January 15th, 2008 at 8:32 pm

So glad to hear you’re feeling better Pete!

Really bummed I missed the show today (congressional hearings) and most of the great conversation on the blog (quickly read thru the comments on the other threads). Work stinks!

  8. mary ellen January 15th, 2008 at 8:33 pm

I’m with you Pete, this Congressional hearing is a big waste of the taxpayers’ dollars – we have more pressing problems such as the Middle East, the recession, health care reform, and the list goes on. Yes, I agree that steroids are the wrong message to send to our young people, but the government is never going to replace a parent’s guidance in these matters. Society in general better develop a moral compass or we’ll have lots more to worry about in future generations. Let MLB foot the bill for the steroids investigation, they’ve got plenty of money. Oh, and by the way, feel better.

  9. Boston Dave January 15th, 2008 at 8:33 pm

    mel,

I definitely liked that the article came from a different angle… ESPN on the outside looking in at itself.

As for ESPN in China, I never thought about that (wasnt even aware of it)… that will be interestng.

    You work in the media?

  10. Doreen January 15th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

    Mel -

I commented on the article in the last thread.

  11. Doreen January 15th, 2008 at 8:41 pm

    Pete,

    Glad you’re feeling better.

  12. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes! January 15th, 2008 at 8:46 pm

Pete cheated, He was able to stand watching the hearings, while those who watched had to do so without ped’s.

  13. murphydog January 15th, 2008 at 8:46 pm

The Tejada “investigation” has more than one purpose. First, Congress wants to determine whether Miguel lied to them. Second, and more to the point, the timing of the announcement leaves no room for doubt. It’s a very plain threat to Clemens, McNamee, et. al., not to screw around when they testify. Or maybe I’m just getting cynical in my old age.

But assuming that I’m right about the Tejada “investigation” I am still confused about this: if you are called to testify before Congress you better not lie. Yet if you serve in Congress, you lie all the time.

  14. mel January 15th, 2008 at 8:47 pm

    From the last thread:

    Doreen,

Yes. Gammons basically said the same thing in his e-mail. Instead of saying sewer rat, he said rat in sewer.

    Great minds think alike. :)

    Boston Dave,

No, I’m not in the media. I just like to pretend that the media can’t control me like the rest of the masses. I march to a different drum and usually take what they say with a grain of salt.

  15. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! January 15th, 2008 at 8:49 pm

    murphydog: A dose of Twain:

    Suppose you are an Idiot
    Suppose you are a congressman
    But I repeat myself.

  16. Doreen January 15th, 2008 at 8:55 pm

I did not watch the hearing. I read the live blog by Jason Stark and the commentary here. It was mentioned a few times that our esteemed representatives in Congress were not well-versed in names and in some particulars of the game. And I’m assuming they had some advance notice of the topic of the hearing.

What scares me is, this is something we are at least a little (some more than a little) familair with, and so were able to pick up on the mistakes. What about issues we are not so well-schooled in? If we were to watch Congress conduct a hearing on something more important or, rather, more impactful on our daily lives, would they also be making these mistakes? Are they as ill prepared for a hearing on global warming, stem cell research, etc.? It’s a chilling thought.

  17. Boston Dave January 15th, 2008 at 8:57 pm

    mel,

sadly I bought most of what the media was selling incl. many at ESPN. I always knew Phillips was a bonehead but I assumed that most of the analysts were more objective.

I have now learned to also take more of this “news” with a grain of salt and I can honestly say that this can be attributed to the writers in this blog (such as yourself :) )

  18. Lori January 15th, 2008 at 8:58 pm

Doreen – Yes, it is sad. But true. As you predict, there are many hearings where congressmen and women are more preoccupied with their own politics than with understanding the facts underlying the issue. Just watch all of the pharmaceutical bashing that goes on.

  19. Boston Dave January 15th, 2008 at 8:59 pm

    Doreen,

I stayed up to date with the Stark blog also. And yes, that is a chilling thought… and I would actually be surprised if it were not the case.

  20. GMAN January 15th, 2008 at 8:59 pm

I’m wanting the sports pages to get back to reporting sports, the games, the competition, strategy, effort, coaching and teamwork…describe what it’s all about…

I’m sick of seeing the sports pages invaded by stories about the steroids, the HGH, the vacation and dating habits of wannabeesportscelebs…Please get Congress off the sports page and back on the Political, editorial and Business pages where they belong…have them concentrate on the economy and bringing peace to the middle-east.
Why does my congressman care about Miguel Tejada, Chuck Knobloch, Brian McNamee…refer it to local law enforecement or the FBI and Please get back to work!!!

Please…George Mitchell…I’m Beggin’ You Man…Please Stop…I’m sick and tired of it…and simply…Can’t Stands It No More!!

For the sake of humanity man…give me back my sports page!!!!

  21. Boston Dave January 15th, 2008 at 9:02 pm

    Doreen,

One interesting point I took from the Stark blog was the comment on Cortizone being legal (in addition to the Ritalin comments) and how the politics of the drug industry play into this. Who is to say that HGH is more harmful than some of the legal drugs or supplements that are available?

If some of these players being scrutinized really wanted to step up to the plate, they should point the finger right back at Congress and blame them for creating this environment where nobody knows what the heck is good for them and there can be little or no faith in what the government says is safe and what’s not.

Am I the first person here to mention the name MELANCON??? Why are you all talking such drivel: MELANCON IS READY

  24. pat January 15th, 2008 at 9:23 pm

I didn’t see the hearings but read that Mitchell said he found McNamee credible because Pettitte corraborated what he said.

Andy didn’t corraborate McNamee’s story about him until after the report had already gone public, so other than McNamee’s word, what did Mitchell base his credibility on to include the names to start with?

  25. mike eff January 15th, 2008 at 9:26 pm

    THANK YOU!!

    those pics gave me chills!

  26. Boston Dave January 15th, 2008 at 9:27 pm

    bodhistava -

you are not the first, or the second… in fact we were discussing him just 20 min ago.

  27. Bronx Liaison January 15th, 2008 at 9:28 pm

    bodhisattva:

We all know Melancon is ready. He still needs to pitch above the New York Penn League, however.

I think he will rise very fast, but it still has to happen before he can contribute at all to the big club.

  28. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes! January 15th, 2008 at 9:28 pm

pat can Mitchell possibly be that stupid?

Mike- No problem, it is about time yankees.com updated. Usually I see pictures taken from far away. I really wish they’d put up a webcam, we are afterall paying for it in beer, and seats.

  29. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! January 15th, 2008 at 9:38 pm

    Jennifer: He’s a congress man, isn’t he?

    I hold the truth self-evident…

  30. Buddy Biancalana January 15th, 2008 at 9:42 pm

    Jennifer-

You should sneak in & put a webcam up, maybe LoHud will sponsor you?

  31. whozat January 15th, 2008 at 9:44 pm

If we were to watch Congress conduct a hearing on something more important or, rather, more impactful on our daily lives, would they also be making these mistakes?

The former chair of the United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) referred to the internet as a series of tubes, and said that “an Internet was sent by my staff at 10 o’clock in the morning on Friday, I got it yesterday [Tuesday]. Why? Because it got tangled up with all these things going on the Internet commercially.”

This is one of the people in charge of forming America’s science and technology policy. He said someone sent him “an Internet”. He’s less tech savvy than my Grandma.

  32. Buddy Biancalana January 15th, 2008 at 9:45 pm

Feeling better? & what evil eye did you give to GreenBeret7? Lol!

  33. Doreen January 15th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

    Whozat -

    That is just mind-boggling.

But we elect these people. Sigh. I often wish there was a box for “none of the above” when I go to the polls!

  34. Drive 4-5 January 15th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Could you please send me the link to the espn article that you were referring to? I just got home and can’t find it. Thanks!:)

  36. Blargh January 15th, 2008 at 9:52 pm

Say, what kind of occupations do politicians have before they become full-time politicians anyway?

  37. Drive 4-5 January 15th, 2008 at 9:52 pm

    Whozat,

Well at least he didnt refer to the plural “internets” like the Leader of the Free World did! lol

  39. Buddy Biancalana January 15th, 2008 at 9:54 pm

Usually lawyers, the same can be said for agents, coincidence?

  41. Bob January 15th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

One thing was made perfectly clear in the hearings today……

Henry Waxman has to be the ugliest person in the country.

  42. Buddy Biancalana January 15th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

Looks like Romney won the Michigan Primary.

  43. Doreen January 15th, 2008 at 10:00 pm

And by “we” I mean, the ubiquitous “they” (“they” say).

    Evening all,

Did everyone get to see the pics of the new stadium on the last thread? The gold letters in that stone gave the new stadium a truly classy, classic look. Excellent choice whomever deserves credit.
I will definitely make some time to take pictures of the new stadium when I visit this year.
Just curious, Who else from outside the NYC area is planning on going to the stadium this year? If so, from where? No specifics, just city or state.

  46. Buddy Biancalana January 15th, 2008 at 10:06 pm

I plan on it, I’ll be coming from San Francisco. I was considering seeing the All Star game & then Oakland the Friday of All Star week.

  47. Boston Dave January 15th, 2008 at 10:08 pm

I live in Mass and travel 350 miles roundtrip to the Stadium for every Saturday game.

  55. Jaewon January 15th, 2008 at 10:29 pm

For all interested: Just got back from the Knicks game, and among the celebs there where Giants safety James Butler, CB R.W. McQuarters and RB Brandon Jacobs. The Knicks kept using the Giants and game clips from their win over the Cowboys to get fans pumped up. Kinda cool.

Oh, David Wright was there as well. He kept his VT hat pretty low though.

  56. 38HotDogs January 15th, 2008 at 10:29 pm

    bizarre.

No, short for Robert last I checked.

Lighten up there Buddy, just joking around.

  64. Noname January 15th, 2008 at 10:45 pm

Now that everyone’s done complaining that Congress is wasting the taxpayers’ dollars with this steroid investigation…

Keep in mind that there were 8 times the number of media in the room (which has been described as smaller than the Rockies’ clubhouse) as there were Congressmen. There were 20 Congressmen in attendance at this hearing, out of a total of 435 U.S. Representatives and 100 U.S. Senators.

That’s less than 4% of our elected representatives “wasting taxpayers’ dollars” on steroids in baseball.

I have to admit, it would have been nice to have Jim Bunning asking some of the questions — he DID have an opinion of the Mitchell Report, though, the day it came out ( http://bunning.senate.gov/publ.....3a9907bc8f )

Rep. Waxman’s House Oversight and Government Reform committee routinely holds hearings on many subjects, and they just don’t leisurely hear one at a time over weeks at a time (see http://oversight.house.gov/schedule.asp for their upcoming schedule, and be sure to check the link underneath for “Recent Hearings and Meetings”)

  65. Andrew January 15th, 2008 at 10:46 pm

lol. i agree with u pete. the attention put in to this is way too much. our country is slipping into recession, we are at war, poverty, hunger, and other stuff ravage this country but we are focusing on this. come on.

  66. Buddy Biancalana January 15th, 2008 at 10:47 pm

Apparently it is fashionable to bash Members of Congress- but folks, Members and their respective staff’s are overwhelmingly very imnpressive (and smart!). There is an element of theatre, but once you get beyond that, you appreciate that this is serious stuff and not to be trivialized.

  74. mel January 15th, 2008 at 11:14 pm

    Buddy,

Thanks for giving Drive the link.

    Boston Dave,

You know what really thickened my skin re: the media? Bobcat! His mantra of “you hear what they want you to hear” just really galvanized the whole picture and is really true about other sectors, too. Although, Pete and his fellow beat writers work hard to give us the true scoops. :)

  75. Boston Dave January 15th, 2008 at 11:17 pm

    Rebecca,

arent you supposed to wear a beekeeper hat or something when you’re playing with sharp pointy objects like that?

  76. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! January 15th, 2008 at 11:22 pm

Boston Dave: Pfft. They got blunt ends and we didn’t aim for the head.

  77. susan mullen January 15th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

Re the ESPN ombudsman’s report on their coverage of recent events, did you read the last item, titled “Addendum” about “viewer emails” that ran as a crawl on the screen during Clemens’ press conference? I did, didn’t find it interesting, balanced, or the like. It is subhuman vile behavior. As it “defines the daily discourse” of sports in this society it forces me to face a society of animals masquerading as human beings. The current ombudsman has done a very good job, but has backed off considerably in her approach from earlier articles. A couple of which were tremendous. For being in a no-win situation, she’s done very well.

  78. Boston Dave January 15th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

    mel,

I believe that. There are some smart and well-informed peeps in here. Honestly though, it’s a bit scary when you start to realize these things and take a step back to look at them without blind eyes. I guess it’s even scarier that most people don’t.

So since we have all these intellectuals in here, I think we need some Lohud blog representation on Jeopardy. One blogger for each MLB team. When are the Yankee primaries?

  79. Boston Dave January 15th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

    Rebecca,

Ok ok…. I was simply concerned with your safety…. and maybe I like beekeeper hats.

  80. mel January 15th, 2008 at 11:29 pm

  83. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! January 15th, 2008 at 11:30 pm

    Boston Dave: LMAO!

Nah, we were fine. Anyway, I wear glasses, so it would have been fairly tricky for it to have hit my eye.

  84. Buddy Biancalana January 15th, 2008 at 11:31 pm

  86. Boston Dave January 15th, 2008 at 11:36 pm

Dont know if it has been mentioned yet, but Captain Jeter was in NY tday promoting G2 and interviewing on some station. I called “Jete your an F–ng GOD!!!!” He gives me the 1 moment signal and after hes done with his little interview he comes over says, “Thank you but I think god would be able to hit a couple more home runs.” He shook my hand, gave me a semi salute and walked away.

Does anyone know how to upload cell phone pics to the page??

Boston Dave: I paid for it. Otherwise I’m a blogspotter. If you can’t tell by the default layout.

    Buddy,

HaHa. The only stat I care about is win-loss record.

Another one I pay attention to is World Championship total. The day that Boston passes us in the record books is the day the Yankee flame in my soul will die out. And I will reluctantly turn in my Happy & Sappy membership card.

Upload your photos from your phone to your providers website in your account, for instance Verizon has pixplace. You can send the photo from there to your email.

    Dr. Cox,

Are you for realz? If you are I’ve seen people upload their pictures to tinyurl and then they post the link here.

Jeter was on ESPN news shows all day promoting it. They had all these guys in retro unis playing catch and Jeter walking in a suit & overcoat.

In the commercial grass grows under his feet as we walks. Like God. lol.

Maybe one oour resident lawyers can explain this to me.

How is it that the COngressional Committee can ask the DOJ to investigate Tejada BUT this is the same people that said that Rafael Palmiero didnt commit perjury when he testified in front of the Committee. As far as I recall Raffie already KNEW that he had tested positive when he testified in front of the committee and wagged his finger and was going through the process of appeal (which is not made public).

I watched the entire hearing today and agree what I found most interesting was the increase of medical exceptions that have been made in theyear 2007 and the increase from what it was in 2006, 2007 being the first year that greenies were banned. I remember a few years ago a piece on ESPN about an ATlanta player that had ADD but to go from 20 something to the numbers reported today unreal. I know that add is one of the illnesse’ du jour but come one.

But would God dive five rows deep into stadium seating for a foul pop.. that is the question.

[God, if you're listening that was a joke]

Today must have been Jeter G2 day. My daughter says he was on MTV today and I saw him on Best Damn tonight.

YanksRule57, – I live in Mass and travel 350 miles roundtrip to the Stadium for every Saturday game.
    ——————————————————-
DUDE! Excellent dedication. I live in NH (Concord area). The last time I was in NY (LI) was for my father’s (headstone) unveiling. That was in 1988 when my daughter was 4 months old. I took in a game at the stadium, which was the last time I’ve been to the Stadium.

I’m desparate to say goodbye to the stadium sometime this season, although I’m daunted by the idea of dropping like $500 for a short weekend in NY.

I’d like to stay at a decently priced hotel (but one with flush toilets) somewhere outside the city and take public transit to the game and also to downtown. I’m somewhere between cheap and broke so if anyone has any suggestions it would be deeply appreciated.

    pete,
i couldn’t agree more with you about the congressional hearings.
we’re at war with much of the world, the economy is tanking and there’s congress, getting involved in steroids in baseball.
    the reason?
it’s because they know they’ll get instant coverage on the nightly news.
pretty sad, but so it goes.
